This is the exact moment

ये ठीक वो क्षण है

that I started creating something called Tinkering School.

जब मैनें टिंकरंग स्कूल का निर्माण करना शुरु किया था।

Tinkering School is a place where kids can pick up sticks

टिंकरिंग स्कूल ऐसी जगह है जहाँ बच्चों को लकडियाँ

and hammers and other dangerous objects,

हथौडी, और ऐसे ही खतरनाक से सामान से खेलने दिया जाता है,

and be trusted.

इस विश्वास के साथ कि

Trusted not to hurt themselves,

वो खुद को चोट नहीं पहुँचायेंगे,

and trusted not to hurt others.

दूसरों को भी आहत नहीं करेंगे।

Tinkering School doesn't follow a set curriculum,

टिंकरिंग स्कूल में कोई सधा हुआ पाठ्यक्रम नहीं है।

and there are no tests.

और परीक्षायें भी नहीं होती हैं।

We're not trying to teach anybody any specific thing.

हम किसी को भी कुछ खास चीज़ नहीं सिखाना चाहते हैं।

When the kids arrive

जब बच्चे आते हैं,

they're confronted with lots of stuff:

तमाम सारा सामान उन्हें चुनौती देता है,

wood and nails and rope and wheels,

लकडियाँ और कीलें और रस्सियाँ और पहिये,

and lots of tools, real tools.

और तमाम औज़ार, असली, सचमुच के औज़ार।

It's a six-day immersive experience for the kids.

ये बच्चों के लिये छः दिन का मग्न कर देने वाल अनुभव होता है।

And within that context, we can offer the kids time --

और इस संदर्भ में, हम उन्हें पूरा समय देते हैं।

something that seems in short supply

in their over-scheduled lives.

Our goal is to ensure that they leave

with a better sense of how to make things

And the kids soon learn

that all projects go awry --

in a project is a step closer

We start from doodles and sketches.

And sometimes we make real plans.

And sometimes we just start building.

और कभी हम बस चीज़ बनाना शुरु कर देते हैं।

Building is at the heart of the experience:

hands on, deeply immersed

and fully committed to the problem at hand.

Robin and I, acting as collaborators,

keep the landscape of the projects

tilted towards completion.

Success is in the doing,

Problems become puzzles

and obstacles disappear.

When faced with particularly difficult

setbacks or complexities,

a really interesting behavior emerges: decoration.

is a kind of conceptual incubation.

From these interludes come deep insights

and amazing new approaches to solving the problems

that had them frustrated just moments before.

All materials are available for use.

And the things that they build
