These are simple objects:

ئەمانە کەلوپەلی سادەن.

clocks, keys, combs, glasses.

کاتژمێر، کلیل، شانە، چاویلکە.

They are the things the victims of genocide in Bosnia

ئەو شتانەن کە قوربانی قڕکردنن لە بۆسنیا

carried with them on their final journey.

بۆ کۆتا گەشتیان لەگەڵ خۆیان بردبوویان.

We are all familiar with these mundane,

هەموومان بەو شتە دنیاییانە ئاشناین،

everyday objects.

کەلوپەلەکانی ڕۆژانە.

The fact that some of the victims carried

ڕاستییەک قوربانییەکان هەڵیان گرت

personal items such as toothpaste and a toothbrush

ماددە تایبەتییەکان وەکو هەویری ددان و فڵچەی ددان

is a clear sign they had no idea

ئەوە ڕوونە کە بیرۆکەیان نەبووە

what was about to happen to them.

کە خەریکە چیان بەسەردا دێت.

Usually, they were told that they were going to be

ئاساییانە، ئەوان دەیانگوت کە ئاڵوگۆڕیان پێکراوە

exchanged for prisoners of war.

بۆ بەندکراوەکانی جەنگەکە.

These items have been recovered

ئەو کەلوپەلانەی دۆزراونەتەوە

from numerous mass graves across my homeland,

لە ژمارەیەکی زۆر گۆڕی بەکۆمەل لە سەرانسەری نیشتیمانەکەم،

and as we speak, forensics are exhuming bodies

و هەروەک قسەمان کرد، دادگاییەکان لاشەکان هەڵدەدەنەوە

from newly discovered mass graves,

20 years after the war.

And it is quite possibly the largest ever discovered.

During the four years of conflict

that devastated the Bosnian nation in the early '90s,

The international criminal tribunal

delivered a number of sentences

for crimes against humanity and genocide.

Genocide is a systematic and deliberate

destruction of a racial, political, religious

or ethnic group.

As much as genocide is about killing.

سەرەڕای ئەوەی قڕکردن دەربارەی کوشتنە.

It is also about destroying their property,

هەروەها دەربارەی وێرانکردنی سامانیان،

their cultural heritage,

میراتی کلتورییان،

and ultimately the very notion that they ever existed.

و لە کۆتاییدا ئەو بیرەوەرییە زۆرەش کە هەیانبوو.

Genocide is not only about the killing;

قڕ کردن تەنها دەربارەی کوشتن نییە،

it is about the denied identity.

بەڵکو دەربارەی ناسنامەی دانپێدانەنراویشە

There are always traces —

هەمیشە شوێنەوارەکان هەن-

no such thing as a perfect crime.

شتێکی وەکو تاوانێکی تەواو نا.

There are always remnants of the perished ones

هەمیشە پاشماوەی مردووەکان هەیە

that are more durable than their fragile bodies

and our selective and fading memory of them.

These items are recovered

ئەم کەلوپەلانە دۆزراونەتەوە

from numerous mass graves,

لە زۆر گۆڕی بەکۆمەڵدا،

and the main goal of this collection of the items

و ئامانجی سەرەکی لە کۆکردنەوەی کەلوپەلەکان

is a unique process

of identifying those who disappeared in the killings,

ناساندنی ئەو کەسانەیە لە کوشتارەکەدا دیار نەمان،

the first act of genocide on European soil

since the Holocaust.

Not a single body should remain undiscovered

or unidentified.

Once recovered,

these items that the victims carried with them

on their way to execution

are carefully cleaned, analyzed,

Thousands of artifacts are packed in white plastic bags

just like the ones you see on CSI.

These objects are used as a forensic tool

ئەم کەلوپەلانە وەکو ئامێرێکی دادگایی بەکار هێنرا

in visual identification of the victims,

لە ناسینەوەی بینراوی قوربانییەکان

but they are also used as very valuable forensic evidence

بەڵام وەکو بەڵگەیەکی بەنرخی دادگاییش بەکار هاتن

in the ongoing war crimes trials.

Survivors are occasionally called

جاروبار پێیان دەوترێت ماوەکان

to try to identify these items physically,

هەوڵ بدەیت فیزیاییانە پێناسەی ئەم کەلوپەلانە بکەیت،

but physical browsing is extremely difficult,

بەڵام گەڕانی فیزیایی بەتەواوی قورسە،

an ineffective and painful process.

Once the forensics and doctors and lawyers

هەرجارێک دادگاییەکان و پزیشکەکان و یاساناسەکان

are done with these objects,

they become orphans of the narrative.

Many of them get destroyed, believe it or not,

or they get simply shelved,

out of sight and out of mind.

I decided a few years ago

چەند ساڵێک لەمەو پێش بڕیارمدا

to photograph every single exhumed item

کە وێنەی هەر کەرەستەیەکی لە گۆڕ هەڵدراوە بگرم

in order to create a visual archive

بۆ ئەوەی ئەرشیفێکی بینراو دروست بکەم

that survivors could easily browse.

تا ئەوانەی ماون بتوانن بگەڕێن.

As a storyteller, I like to give back to the community.

وەکو چیرۆکخوانێک، پێم خۆشە بیدەمەوە بە کۆمەڵگاکەم.

I like to move beyond raising awareness.

حەز دەکەم لە پشت بەرزکردنەوەی ئاگادارییەکانەوە بجوڵێم.

And in this case, someone may

و لەم بارودۆخەدا، هەندێک کەس لەوانەیە

recognize these items

ئەم کەلوپەلانە بناسێتەوە

or at least their photographs will remain

as a permanent, unbiased and accurate reminder

of what happened.

Photography is about empathy,

and the familiarity of these items guarantee empathy.

In this case, I am merely a tool,

لەم بارودۆخەدا، من تەنها ئامێرێکم،

a forensic, if you like,

and the result is a photography that is as close

as possible of being a document.

Once all the missing persons are identified,

In all their simplicity,

these items are the last testament

to the identity of the victims,

بۆ ناسنامەی قوربانییەکان،

the last permanent reminder

کۆتا بیرهێنەرەوەی هەمیشەیی

that these people ever existed.

کە ئەم خەڵکە هەیانبووە.
