These are simple objects:

ये रोजमर्रा की जिंदगी की चीज़ें हैं:

clocks, keys, combs, glasses.

घडियाँ, चाबियाँ, कंघे, चश्मे।

They are the things the victims of genocide in Bosnia

इन चीजों को बोस्निया जाति-संहार के शिकार हुये लोग

carried with them on their final journey.

अपनी आखिरी यात्रा पर निकले थे।

We are all familiar with these mundane,

हम बखूबी वाकिफ़ हैं इन नीरस

everyday objects.

आम चीज़ों से।

The fact that some of the victims carried

मार गये कुछ लोग अपने साथ

personal items such as toothpaste and a toothbrush

निज़ी चीज़ें जैसे मंज़न और टूथब्रश ले कर चले थे

is a clear sign they had no idea

क्योंकि उन्हें अंदाज़ा ही नहीं था

what was about to happen to them.

कि उनके साथ क्या होने वाला था।

Usually, they were told that they were going to be

अक्सर उन्हें बताया जाता था कि वो

exchanged for prisoners of war.

These items have been recovered

ये चीजें निकाली गयी हैं

from numerous mass graves across my homeland,

and as we speak, forensics are exhuming bodies

और इस वक्त, फ़ोरेंसिक टीमें और मृतको को निकाल रही हैं

from newly discovered mass graves,

20 years after the war.

युद्ध के बीस साल बाद।

And it is quite possibly the largest ever discovered.

और ये शायद अब तक सामने आया सबसे बडा जनसंहार है।

During the four years of conflict

लडाई के चार सालों में,

that devastated the Bosnian nation in the early '90s,

90 के दशक के पहले हिस्से मे, बोस्निया को बर्बाद कर दिया

approximately 30,000 citizens, mainly civilians,

went missing, presumed killed,

and another 100,000 were killed

during combat operations.

Most of them were killed

The international criminal tribunal

delivered a number of sentences

for crimes against humanity and genocide.

मानवता-विरोधी अपराधों और जाति-संहार के लिये।

Genocide is a systematic and deliberate

जाति-संहार होता है विधिवत और जाना-बूझा

destruction of a racial, political, religious

संहार किसी जाति, राजनैतिक, धार्मिक

or ethnic group.

या प्रजातीय समूह का।

As much as genocide is about killing.

जाति-संहार लोगों को तो मारता ही है,

It is also about destroying their property,

वो विनाश चाहता है उनकी ज़रूरी संपत्ति का

their cultural heritage,

उनकी सांस्कृतिक संपदा का,

and ultimately the very notion that they ever existed.

और उनके होने के किसी भी सबूत का।

Genocide is not only about the killing;

जाति-संहार सिर्फ़ कत्ल नहीं होता है;

it is about the denied identity.

ये किसी की पहचान छीन लेने की कोशिश होती है।

There are always traces —

लेकिन कुछ न कुछ बच ही जाता है ---

no such thing as a perfect crime.

कोई अपराध अचूक नहीं होता।

There are always remnants of the perished ones

शिकार हुए लोगों का कुछ हिस्सा बचता ही है

that are more durable than their fragile bodies

जो उनके शरीर के खपने के बाद भी रहता है

and our selective and fading memory of them.

और हमारी याद-दाश्त में उनकी जगह खोने के बाद भी रहता है

These items are recovered

ये चीजें मिलती हैं

from numerous mass graves,

तमाम सामूहिक कब्रों से,

and the main goal of this collection of the items

और इन वस्तुओं को इकट्ठा करने का मूल उद्देश्य है

is a unique process

एक ख़ास प्रक्रिया जिससे

of identifying those who disappeared in the killings,

कत्लेआम के शिकार लोगों को पहचाना जाता है,

the first act of genocide on European soil

पहला जाति-संहार जो यूरोप की धरती पर हुआ

since the Holocaust.

Not a single body should remain undiscovered

एक भी मृतक नहीं होना चाहिये जिसे

or unidentified.

पहचाना ना जा सके।

Once recovered,

इन चीजों के मिलने पर,

these items that the victims carried with them

जिन्हें शिकार हुये लोग साथ रखते थे

on their way to execution

मौत के मुँह में जाते समय,

are carefully cleaned, analyzed,

इन्हें साफ़ कर के बारीकी से जाँचा जाता है

catalogued and stored.

रिकार्ड दर्ज़ कर के सुरक्षित रखा जाता है।

Thousands of artifacts are packed in white plastic bags

हज़ारों ऐसी वस्तुओं को सफ़ेद प्लास्टिक की थैलियों में पैक करते हैं

just like the ones you see on CSI.

जैसा के आप सी.एस.आई में देखते हैं।

These objects are used as a forensic tool

इन वस्तुओं का इस्तेमाल पडताल में

in visual identification of the victims,

मृतकों की पहचान के लिये होता है,

but they are also used as very valuable forensic evidence

और इनका ज़रूरी इस्तेमाल सबूत के तौर पर

in the ongoing war crimes trials.

आगे होने वाले युद्ध-अपराधों के मुकदमों में होता है

Survivors are occasionally called

हमलों में बच गये लोगो को कभी-कभी बुला कर

to try to identify these items physically,

इन चीजों की पहचान करवाई जाती है

but physical browsing is extremely difficult,

मगर पूरी की पूरी चीज़ को दिखा पाना कठिन होता है,

an ineffective and painful process.

बहुत धीमी रफ़्तार पर और बहुत दुःखद यादों भरा भी।

Once the forensics and doctors and lawyers

जाँचकर्ता, वकील और डॉक्टरों के

are done with these objects,

इस्तेमाल के बाद

they become orphans of the narrative.

ये वस्तुएँ दुख-भरी दास्तान की अनाथ औलादों सरीकी हो जाती हैं

Many of them get destroyed, believe it or not,

आपको विश्वास नहीं होगा कि ये नष्ट हो जाती हैं

or they get simply shelved,

या बस रखी रह जाती है,

out of sight and out of mind.

I decided a few years ago

कुछ बरस पहले, मैने फ़ैसला किया कि

to photograph every single exhumed item

मै हर एक ऐसी वस्तु की तस्वीर लूँगा

in order to create a visual archive

जिस से एक अभिलेख, एक रिकार्ड तैयार हो

that survivors could easily browse.

जिसे हमलों में बचे लोग देख सकें।

As a storyteller, I like to give back to the community.

एक कहानीकार होने के नाते, मै समाज को कुछ देना चाहता था

I like to move beyond raising awareness.

और सिर्फ़ जागरुकता फ़ैलाने के आगे जाना चाहता था

And in this case, someone may

हो सकता है कि कोई

recognize these items

इन्हें पहचान ले या

or at least their photographs will remain

कम से कम इन की तस्वीर

as a permanent, unbiased and accurate reminder

स्थाई, निष्पक्ष और सटीक याद दिलायेगी

of what happened.

Photography is about empathy,

फ़ोटोग्राफ़ी हमदर्दी का माध्यम है,

and the familiarity of these items guarantee empathy.

और इन चीजों से हमारा परिचय निश्चित रूप से हमदर्दी को जन्म देगा।

In this case, I am merely a tool,

इस सब में, मै एक माध्यम की तरह हूँ,

a forensic, if you like,

आप मुझे एक पडताल-कर्ता कह सकते हैं,

and the result is a photography that is as close

और परिणाम स्वरूप ये फ़ोटोग्राफ़ी

as possible of being a document.

Once all the missing persons are identified,

जब सारे गुमशुदाओं का पता लग जायेगा,

only decaying bodies in their graves

तब या तो कब्र में गलते उनके शरीर बचेंगे

and these everyday items will remain.

या फ़िर ये रोजमर्रा की चीज़ें।

In all their simplicity,

साधारणतम होते हुए भी,

these items are the last testament

ये चीजें साक्षी हैं

to the identity of the victims,

मारे गये लोगों की पहचानों की,

the last permanent reminder

आखिरी स्थाई याद-दाश्त कि

that these people ever existed.

ये लोग कभी सच में थे।
