When I first began working on the bridge,

I met Jason on July 22 of last year

This kind, intelligent young man from New Jersey

I spoke with Jason's parents that evening,

The collateral damage of suicide

I pose these questions to you:

What would you do if your family member,

friend or loved one was suicidal?

What would you say?

Would you know what to say?

ئەزانن ئەبێ ئەوکاتە چی بڵێن؟

In my experience, it's not just the talking that you do,

but the listening.

Listen to understand.

Don't argue, blame,

or tell the person you know how they feel,

because you probably don't.

By just being there,

you may just be the turning point that they need.

If you think someone is suicidal,

don't be afraid to confront them and ask the question.

One way of asking them the question is like this:

"Others in similar circumstances

have thought about ending their life;

بیریان لەوە کردۆتەوە کۆتایی بە ژیانیان بهێنن؛

have you had these thoughts?"

تۆ قەت ئەم بیرکردنەوانەت هەبووە؟"

Confronting the person head-on

ڕاستەوخۆ ڕوبەڕووبوونەوەی کەسەکە

may just save their life and be the turning point for them.

لەوانەیە ژیانیان ڕزگار بکات و ببێت بە خاڵی وەچەرخان بۆیان.

Some other signs to look for:

هەندێک لە نیشانەکانی تری پێویستە بۆی بگەڕێیت؛

hopelessness, believing that things are terrible

بێ هیوایی، بڕوابوون بەوەی شتەکان خراپن و

and never going to get better;

قەت بەرەو باشتربوون ناچن؛

helplessness, believing that there is nothing

بێدەسەڵاتی، باوەڕبوون بەوەی هیچ شتێک نییە

that you can do about it;

بتوانیت بیکەیت لەبارەیەوە؛

recent social withdrawal;

کشانەوە لە ژیانی کۆمەڵایەتی؛ و

and a loss of interest in life.

I came up with this talk just a couple of days ago,

and I received an email from a lady

that I'd like to read you her letter.

She lost her son on January 19 of this year,

and she wrote this me this email

just a couple of days ago,

and it's with her permission and blessing

that I read this to you.

"Hi, Kevin. I imagine you're at the TED Conference.

That must be quite the experience to be there.

I'm thinking I should go walk the bridge this weekend.

I can't imagine the courage it takes for her

to go down to that bridge and walk the path

that her son took that day,

and also the courage just to carry on.

I'd like to introduce you to a man

I refer to as hope and courage.

On March 11 of 2005,

I responded to a radio call of a possible

suicidal subject on the bridge sidewalk

near the north tower.

I rode my motorcycle down the sidewalk

and observed this man, Kevin Berthia,

standing on the sidewalk.

Shortly after this incident,

I received a letter from Kevin's mother,

and I'd like to read it to you.

Nothing will erase the events of March 11,

Suicide is not just something I've encountered on the job.

It's personal.

My grandfather committed suicide by poisoning.

ئەو کارە، هەرچەنە کۆتایی بە ئازارەکەی خۆی هێنا،

robbed me from ever getting to know him.

بەڵام ڕێگریش بوو لەوەی من بتوانم بیناسم

This is what suicide does.

خۆکوشتن دەبێتە هۆی ئەمە.

For most suicidal folks,

بۆ زۆربەی ئەو کەسانە،

or those contemplating suicide,

یان بۆ ئەوانەی بیر لە خۆکوشتن دەکەنەوە

they wouldn't think of hurting another person.

بیر لە ئازاردانی کەسانی تر ناکەنەوە

They just want their own pain to end.

بەس ئەیانەوێت ئازارەکەی خۆیان کۆتایی پێبێت.

Typically, this is accomplished in just three ways:

بە شێوەیەکی نموونەیی، ئەمە تەنیا بە سێ ڕێگە بەدیدێت:

sleep, drugs or alcohol, or death.

خەوتن، دەرمان یان کحول، یان مردن

In my career, I've responded to

لە ماوەی کارکردنمدا، بەشداریم کردووە

and been involved in hundreds

of mental illness and suicide calls

نەخۆشی دەروونی و هەوڵی خۆکووشتندا

around the bridge.

لە دەوروبەری پردەکە

Of those incidents I've been directly involved with,

لەو ڕووداوانە کە ڕاستەوخۆ بەشداربووم تیایاندا

I've only lost two,

تەنیا دوو کەسم لەدەست یاوە،

but that's two too many.

بەڵام ئەو دووە زۆر زۆرە

One was Jason.

یەکێکیان جەیسن بوو.

The other was a man I spoke to

ئەوەی تریان پیاوێک بوو

for about an hour.

بۆ نزیکەی کاتژمێرێک قسەم لەگەڵکرد

During that time, he shook my hand

لەو ماوەیەدا، سێ جار

on three occasions.

تەوقەی لەگەڵ کردم،

On that final handshake,

he looked at me, and he said,

سەیری کردم، و وتی

"Kevin, I'm sorry, but I have to go."

"کێڤن، داوای لێبوردن ئەکەم، بەڵام ئەبێ بڕۆم."

And he leapt.

خۆی فڕێ یایە خوارەوە

Horrible, absolutely horrible.

ترسناک بوو، زۆر ترسناک بوو

I do want to tell you, though,

بەڵام ئەمەوێ پێتان بڵێم،

the vast majority of folks

زۆرینەی خەڵک

that we do get to contact on that bridge

کە لەسەر ئەو پردە تووشیان ئەبین

do not commit suicide.

خۆیان ناکووژن.

Additionally, that very few

هەروەها، لەو خەڵکە کەمە

who have jumped off the bridge and lived

کە لە پردەکەوە خۆیان فڕێ یاوەتە خوارەوە و ژیاون و

and can talk about it,

ئەتوانن باسی بکەن،

that one to two percent,

ئەو لە سەدا یەک بۆ دووە،

most of those folks have said

زۆربەی ئەو کەسانە وتویانە

that the second that they let go of that rail,

هەر کە دەستیان لە ستارەکە بەریاوە

they knew that they had made a mistake

درکیان بەوەکردووە کە هەڵەیان کردووە و

and they wanted to live.

دەیانەوێت لە ژیانا بمێننەوە.

I tell people, the bridge not only connects

بە خەڵک ئەڵێم، پردەکە بەتەنیا

Marin to San Francisco,

مارین بە سان فرانسیسکۆوە نابەستێتەوە،

but people together also.

بەڵکو خەڵکیش پێکەوە دەبەستێتەوە.

That connection, or bridge that we make,

ئەو بەستنەوەیە، یان ئەو پردەی درووستی دەکەین،

is something that each and every one of us

شتێک کە هەموومان و هەر یەکێک لە ئێمە

should strive to do.

پێویستە هەوڵی بۆ بەین.

Suicide is preventable.

خۆشکوستن ڕێگەی لێدەگیرێت

There is help. There is hope.

یارمەتی هەیە. هیوا هەیە.
