I wake up to this every morning,

like a Disney princess.

I am an entrepreneur

who facilitates the making of these forests professionally.

We have helped factories,

farms,

schools,

homes,

apartment buildings,

A forest is not an isolated piece of land where animals live together.

بۆ من، دارستان،

A forest can be an integral part of our urban existence.

گرنگ نییە چەنێک گەورە یاخود بچووک بن.

A forest, for me,

زۆرینەی ئەم جیهانەی ئێستا تیایدا دەژین دارستان بووە پێشتر.

is a place so dense with trees that you just can't walk into it.

ئەمە پێش دەستێوەردانی مرۆڤ بووە.

It doesn't matter how big or small they are.

دواتر خانووەکانمان لەسەر ئەو دارستانانە دروست کرد،

وەکو ساوپاولۆ،

Most of the world we live in today was forest.

بیرمانچوو کە ئێمەش بەشێکین لە سروشت،

This was before human intervention.

هاوشێوەی ٨،٤ ملیۆن جۆری تر لەسەر ئەم هەسارەیە.

Then we built up our cities on those forests,

like São Paulo,

ناوچەکەمان چیتر ناوچەیەکی سروشتی نەما.

forgetting that we belong to nature as well,

as much as 8.4 million other species on the planet.

بەڵام ئەمە بۆ هەرهەموومان بەم شێوەیە نەبوو.

من و هەندێک کەسی تر هەوڵدەدەین کارامەییانە ئەم دارستانانە دروست بکەینەوە

Our habitat stopped being our natural habitat.

لەهەموو جێ و ڕێیەک بێت.

But not anymore for some of us.

من ئەندازیارێکی پیشەسازیم.

A few others and I today make these forests professionally --

شارەزام لە دروستکردنی ئۆتۆمبیلدا.

لە پیشەی ڕابردوومدا لە تۆیۆتا،

anywhere and everywhere.

فێربووم چۆن سەرچاوەی سروشتی بگۆڕم بۆ بەرهەم.

I'm an industrial engineer.

I specialize in making cars.

هەر بۆ نمونە،

In my previous job at Toyota,

I learned how to convert natural resources into products.

we would drip the sap out of a rubber tree,

But these products can never become a natural resource again.

We separate the elements from nature

That's industrial production.

Nature, on the other hand, works in a totally opposite way.

The natural system produces by bringing elements together,

atom by atom.

All the natural products become a natural resource again.

This is something which I learned

نەوەک لە دژی.

when I made a forest in the backyard of my own house.

لەو کاتەوە،

تاوەکو ئێستا ٧٥ دارستانی هاوشێوەمان دروستکردووە لە ٢٥ شاری جیهاندا.

And this was the first time I worked with nature,

rather than against it.

Since then,

هەرجارێک لە شوێنێکی نوێدا کاربکەین،

we have made 75 such forests in 25 cities across the world.

بۆمان دەردەکەوێت کە هەموو توخمە پێویستەکان بۆ دروستکردنی دارستانێک

بەردەستە ڕێک لە دەوروبەری خۆمان.

Every time we work at a new place,

هەموو ئەوەی پێویستە بیکەین کە توخمەکان کۆبکەینەوە لەیەکتر

we find that every single element needed to make a forest

و ڕێگە بە سروشت بدەین کاری خۆی بکات.

is available right around us.

بۆ دروستکردنی دارستانێک، بە گڵ دەست پێدەکەین.

All we have to do is to bring these elements together

دەستی لێدەدەین، هەستی پێدەکەین، تەنانەت تامیشی دەکەین.

and let nature take over.

تاوەکو بزانین چی خەسڵەتێکی کەمە.

To make a forest we start with soil.

ئەگەر گڵەکە لە تەنۆچکەی بچوک پێکهاتبوو، ئەوا گڵەکە دەتەپێت

We touch, feel and even taste it

وەها دەتەپێت، کە ئاو بەناویدا ناتوانێت تێپەڕێت.

to identify what properties it lacks.

هەندێک بارستایی بەردەستی ناوخۆیی تێکەڵ دەکەین،

If the soil is made up of small particles it becomes compact --

so compact, that water cannot seep in.

کە یارمەتی گڵەکە دەدات زیاتر پیاڕەو بێت.

We mix some local biomass available around,

ئێستا ئاو دەتوانێت تێپەڕێت.

ئەگەر گڵەکە توانای گرتنەخۆی ئاوی نەبێت،

which can help soil become more porous.

هەندێک بارستایی تر زیاد دەکەین--

Water can now seep in.

مادەیەک کە توانای هەڵمژینی ئاوی هەبێت وەکو پەینی سروشتی یان کا.

If the soil doesn't have the capacity to hold water,

تاوەکو خاکەکە ئاوەکە لەخۆ بگرێت و بە شێداری بمێنێتەوە.

we will mix some more biomass --

some water-absorbent material like peat or bagasse,

ڕووەک پێویستی بە ئاو، و تیشکی خۆر، و ماددەی خۆراکی هەیە بۆ گەشەکردن.

so soil can hold this water and it stays moist.

چی ئەبێت ئەگەر خاکەکە هیچ ماددەیەکی خۆراکی تێدانەبێت؟

To grow, plants need water, sunlight and nutrition.

ناکرێت ڕاستەوخۆ ماددەی خۆراکی زیاد بکەینە ناو خاکەکە.

ئەمەیان شێوازی پیشەسازییە.

دژی سروشتە.

What if the soil doesn't have any nutrition in it?

لەجیاتیدا، زیندەوەری مایکرۆسکۆپی دەکەینە خاکەکەوە.

We don't just add nutrition directly to the soil.

ئەوانیش بەشێوەیەکی سروشتی ماددە خۆراکییەکان بەرهەم دەهێنن.

That would be the industrial way.

پشت بەو بارستە زیندەییە دەبەستن کە لەگەڵ خاکەکە تێکەڵمان کردووە،

It goes against nature.

We instead add microorganisms to the soil.

هەموو ئەوەی پێویستە بیکەن، بخۆن و ژمارەیان زیاد بکات.

They produce the nutrients in the soil naturally.

لەگەڵ زیادبوونی ژمارەیاندا،

خاکەکە دووبارە هەناسە دەدات.

They feed on the biomass we have mixed in the soil,

زیندوو دەبێتەوە.

so all they have to do is eat and multiply.

بەم کارە، درەختە ڕەسەنەکانی ناوچەکە دەپارێزین.

And as their number grows,

چۆن بڕیار دەدەین چی ڕەسەنە و چی ڕەسەن نییە؟

the soil starts breathing again.

زۆرباشە، هەر شتێک پێش دەستتێوەردانی مرۆڤ بوونی هەبووبێت، ڕەسەنە.

It becomes alive.

We survey the native tree species of the place.

ئەمە یاسا ئاسانەکەیە.

How do we decide what's native or not?

ئێمە ڕووپێوانی باخێکی نیشتیمانی دەکەین

Well, whatever existed before human intervention is native.

تاوەکو کۆتا پاشماوەکانی دارستانێکی سروشتی بدۆزینەوە.

That's the simple rule.

We survey a national park

ئێمە ڕووپێوانی بێستانە پیرۆزەکان دەکەین،

یاخود دارستانە پیرۆزەکانی دەوروبەری پەرستگا دێرینەکان.

to find the last remains of a natural forest.

ئەگەر هیچ شتێکیش نەدۆزینەوە،

We survey the sacred groves,

دەچینە مۆزەخانەکان

بەدوای تۆو یاخود دارەکانی درەختەکان دەگەڕێین کە لە دێر زەمانەوە هەبوونە.

or sacred forests around old temples.

And if we don't find anything at all,

لە تابلۆ کۆنەکان، و شیعرەکان، و ئەدەبی ناوچەکە دەکۆڵینەوە،

we go to museums

to see the seeds or wood of trees existing there a long time ago.

تاوەکو جۆری درەختەکان بناسینەوە کە سەر بە ناوچەکەن.

We research old paintings, poems and literature from the place,

هەر کە درەختەکانمان دەست نیشان کرد،

دابەشیان دەکەین بەسەر چوار چیندا:

چینی دەوەن، چینی نیمچە-درەخت، چینی درەخت، و چینی درەختی لقدار.

to identify the tree species belonging there.

ڕێژەی هەر چینێک دیاری دەکەین،

Once we know our trees,

we divide them in four different layers:

دواتر ڕێژەی سەدی هەر جۆری دارێک هەڵدەبژێرین لەناو تێکەڵەکەدا.

shrub layer, sub-tree layer, tree layer and canopy layer.

ئەگەر بمانەوێت دارستانێکی بەبەر دروست بکەین،

We fix the ratios of each layer,

ڕێژەی سەدی دارە بەبەرهەمەکان زیاد دەکەین.

and then we decide the percentage of each tree species in the mix.

ئەگەر دارستانێکی گوڵدار دروست بکەین،

دارستانێک بێت سەرنجی زۆرترین باڵدار و هەنگ ڕابکیشێت،

If we are making a fruit forest,

we increase the percentage of fruit-bearing trees.

یاخود دەکریت بەسادەیی دارستانێکی ڕەسەنی هەمیشە سەوز دروست بکەین.

It could be a flowering forest,

a forest that attracts a lot of birds or bees,

تۆوەکان کۆدەکەینەوە و نەونەمامیان پێ چەکەرە دەکەین.

or it could simply be a native, wild evergreen forest.

دڵنیادەبینەوە لەوەی کە درەختەکانی سەر بە هەمان چین

لە تەنیشتی یەکەوە نەچێنراون،

We collect the seeds and germinate saplings out of them.

ئەگینا لەسەر هەمان شوێنی ستوونی بەربەرەکانی دەکەن کە باڵا دەکەن.

نەونەمامەکان لە نزیکی یەکترەوە دەچێنین.

We make sure that trees belonging to the same layer

are not planted next to each other,

لە ڕووتەختی دەرەوەدا، چینێکی ئەستووری تێکەڵەی گەڵا و کا بڵاوە پێدەکەین،

or they will fight for the same vertical space when they grow tall.

بۆ ئەوەی کە دەرەوە گەرمبوو، خاکەکە بەشێداری بمێنێتەوە.

We plant the saplings close to each other.

هەرکاتێک ساردبوو،

زوقم تەنها لەسەر چینی تێکەڵەکە دروست دەبێت،

On the surface, we spread a thick layer of mulch,

so when it's hot outside the soil stays moist.

کە وادەکات خاکەکە بەردەوام بێت لە هەناسەدان، ئەگەرچی دەرەوەش بەستبێتی.

When it's cold,

خاکەکە زۆر نەرمە--

frost formation happens only on the mulch,

ئەوەندە نەرم، کە رەگەکان بەئاسانی، و بەخێرایی،

so soil can still breathe while it's freezing outside.

پەل بهاوێژن.

The soil is very soft --

لەسەرەتادە، دارستانەکە لەوە ناچێت کە گەشە بکات.

so soft, that roots can penetrate into it easily,

بەڵام لەڕاستیدا لەژێرەوە گەشەدەکات.

لە سێ مانگی سەرەتادا،

ڕەگەکان بەقوڵی یەک مەتر پەل دەهاون.

rapidly.

Initially, the forest doesn't seem like it's growing,

ڕەگەکان تۆڕێک دروست دەکەن،

but it's growing under the surface.

کە بەتوندی خاکەکەیان لەخۆ گرتووە.

میکرۆب و جۆرەکانی کەڕوو لەناو تۆڕی رەگەکاندا دەژین.

In the first three months,

roots reach a depth of one meter.

These roots form a mesh,

هەربۆیە ئەگەر درەختەکە هەندێک ماددەی خۆراکی لەدەوروبەریدا نەبن،

tightly holding the soil.

ئەوا میکرۆبەکان ماددە خۆراکییەکە پەیدا دەکەن بۆ درەختەکە.

Microbes and fungi live throughout this network of roots.

هەرکاتێکیش باران ببارێت،

So if some nutrition is not available in the vicinity of a tree,

بەشێوەیەکی سیحراوی،

لە شەووڕۆژێکدا قارچکەکان دەردەکەون.

these microbes are going to get the nutrition to the tree.

ئەمەش ئەوە دەگەیەنێت کە خاکەکە لەژێرەوە تۆڕێکی کەڕوویی تەندروستی هەیە.

Whenever it rains,

دوابەدوای ڕەگ داکووتان،

magically,

mushrooms appear overnight.

دارستانەکە دەست بەدەرکەوتن دەکات لەڕووی دەرەوەیدا.

And this means the soil below has a healthy fungal network.

لەگەڵ گەشەسەندنی دارستانەکەدا، بەبەردەوامی ئاوی دەدەین--

Once these roots are established,

هەتاکو دوو سێ ساڵی داهاتوو، دارستانەکە ئاو دەدەین.

forest starts growing on the surface.

As the forest grows we keep watering it --

ئامانجمان ئەوەیە هەموو ئاو و ماددە خۆراکییەکان تەنها بۆ درەختەکان بن،

for the next two to three years, we water the forest.

هەربۆیە گژوگیاکان لەسەر زەوییەکە لادەبەین.

We want to keep all the water and soil nutrition only for our trees,

لەگەڵ گەشەکردنی دارستانەکە، ڕێگە دەگرێت لە تیشکی خۆر.

سەرەنجام، دارستانەکە وەها چڕ دەبێت

so we remove the weeds growing on the ground.

کە چیتر تیشکی خۆر ناگات بە زەوییەکە.

As this forest grows, it blocks the sunlight.

گژوگیاکان لە گەشە دەوەستن چونکە ئەوانیش پێویستیان بە تیشکی خۆرە.

Eventually, the forest becomes so dense

لەم قۆناغەدا،

هەر دڵۆپێک ئاو کە دەکەوێتە سەر زەوی دارستانەکە

that sunlight can't reach the ground anymore.

Weeds cannot grow now, because they need sunlight as well.

نابێتەوە بە هەڵم و ناگەڕێتەوە بەرگەهەوا.

ئەم دارستانە چڕە هەوا شێدارەکە چڕ دەکاتەوە

At this stage,

every single drop of water that falls into the forest

و شێدارییەکەی ڕادەگرێت.

doesn't evaporate back into the atmosphere.

وردە وردە ئاودانی دارستانەکە کەم دەکەینەوە تاوەکو بەتەواوی ڕایدەگرین.

This dense forest condenses the moist air

تەنانەت بەبێ ئاودانیش،

and retains its moisture.

زەوی دارستانەکە بەشێداری دەمێنێتەوە و هەندێ جاریش بە تاریکی.

We gradually reduce and eventually stop watering the forest.

ئێستا، هەر تاقە گەڵایەک بکەوێتە سەر زەوی دارستانەکە،

And even without watering,

the forest floor stays moist and sometimes even dark.

یەکاویەک دەست دەکات بە شیبوونەوە.

ئەم بارستە شیبوویەوە دەبێت بە پەیین،

Now, when a single leaf falls on this forest floor,

کە خۆراکە بۆ دارستانەکە.

it immediately starts decaying.

لەگەڵ گەشەکردنی دارستانەکەدا،

گەڵای زیاتر دەکەونە سەر ڕووتەختەکە

This decayed biomass forms humus,

ئەمەش واتە پەیینی زیاتر بەرهەم دەهێنرێت.

خۆراکی زیاتریش واتە دارستانەکە زیاتر گەشە دەکات.

which is food for the forest.

As the forest grows,

ئەم دارستانەش هەتا بێت بەخێرایی گەشە دەکات.

more leaves fall on the surface --

it means more humus is produced,

لەگەڵ پشت بەخۆبەستن،

it means more food so the forest can grow still bigger.

ئەم دارستانانە لە سوڕێکی گەشەسەندندا دەبن بە بەردەوامی

And this forest keeps growing exponentially.

کە ڕەنگە هەتاهەتایی بێت.

لە دارستانێکی وەها خۆڕسکدا،

Once established,

these forests are going to regenerate themselves again and again --

سەرپەرشتی کردن پێویست نییە.

probably forever.

بۆ خۆی ئاهەنگێکی بچوکی جەنگەڵە.

In a natural forest like this,

no management is the best management.

ئەم دارستانە بە کۆمەڵ گەشە دەکات.

ئەگەر هەمان درەخت

It's a tiny jungle party.

هەمان جۆر

بە جیا جیا بچێنرانایە،

This forest grows as a collective.

هەرگیز بەم خێراییە گەشەیان نەدەکرد.

بەم شێوەیەش دارستانی تەمەن ١٠٠ ساڵ دروست دەکەین

If the same trees --

same species --

would have been planted independently,

تەنها لە ماوەی ١٠ ساڵدا.

زۆر سوپاس.

it wouldn't grow so fast.

And this is how we create a 100-year-old forest

in just 10 years.
