This is a man-made forest.

It attracts a lot of biodiversity.

like a Disney princess.

We have helped factories,

우리는 공장들

farms,

농장들

schools,

학교들

homes,

가정들

resorts,

리조트들

apartment buildings,

아파트 빌딩들

public parks

공립 공원들

and even a zoo

그리고 동물원까지

to have one of such forests.

이런 숲들을 하나씩 소유하도록 도왔습니다.

A forest is not an isolated piece of land where animals live together.

숲은 동물들이 함께 사는 분리된 땅 덩어리가 아닙니다.

A forest can be an integral part of our urban existence.

숲은 도시 생명체인 우리의 중요한 부분이 될 수 있습니다.

A forest, for me,

숲은 저에게는

is a place so dense with trees that you just can't walk into it.

나무들이 빽빽하게 심어져 걸어 들어가기 힘든 곳입니다.

It doesn't matter how big or small they are.

큰 사람이건 작은 사람이건 상관없이요.

Most of the world we live in today was forest.

지금 우리가 사는 세상의 대부분은 과거에 숲이었습니다.

This was before human intervention.

이것이 인간이 개입하기 전의 모습입니다.

Then we built up our cities on those forests,

그리고 우리는 이 숲들 위에 우리의 도시들을 세웠습니다.

like São Paulo,

상파울루처럼요.

forgetting that we belong to nature as well,

우리 역시 지구상의 다른 8천4백만 종들처럼

as much as 8.4 million other species on the planet.

자연의 일부라는 것을 잊고 말이죠.

Our habitat stopped being our natural habitat.

우리의 서식지는 더이상 자연서식지가 아니죠.

But not anymore for some of us.

하지만 우리 중 일부에게는 더이상 그렇지 않습니다.

A few others and I today make these forests professionally --

저는 몇몇 분들과 함께 이러한 숲들을 전문적으로 만들고 있습니다.

anywhere and everywhere.

어느 곳이든지 모든 곳에요.

I'm an industrial engineer.

저는 산업 기사입니다.

I specialize in making cars.

자동차 생산이 전문분야이죠.

In my previous job at Toyota,

전직장인 토요타에서 일할 때는

I learned how to convert natural resources into products.

천연자원을 상품으로 전환하는 법을 배웠습니다.

To give you an example,

예를 들어

we would drip the sap out of a rubber tree,

고무나무에서 수액을 받아

convert it into raw rubber

생고무로 바꾸고

and make a tire out of it -- the product.

그것으로 타이어 즉 상품을 만들었습니다.

But these products can never become a natural resource again.

하지만 이러한 상품들은 다시는 천연자원이 될 수 없죠.

We separate the elements from nature

우리는 자연에서 성분들을 분리해내서

and convert them into an irreversible state.

되돌이킬 수 없는 상태로 만들어 버립니다.

That's industrial production.

이것이 산업 생산이죠.

Nature, on the other hand, works in a totally opposite way.

반면 자연은 전혀 반대로 움직입니다.

The natural system produces by bringing elements together,

자연체계는 성분들을 합쳐서 무언가를 만들어냅니다.

atom by atom.

핵과 핵을 합성하죠.

All the natural products become a natural resource again.

모든 자연 자원들은 다시 천연자원이 될 수 있습니다.

This is something which I learned

이것이 뒷마당에 숲을 만들면서

when I made a forest in the backyard of my own house.

제가 배운 것입니다.

And this was the first time I worked with nature,

제가 자연을 거스르지 않고

rather than against it.

자연과 함께 일한 것은 이번이 처음이었습니다.

Since then,

그 이후로

we have made 75 such forests in 25 cities across the world.

우리는 전세계 25개 도시에 이런 숲을 75곳에 만들었습니다.

Every time we work at a new place,

우리가 새로운 곳에서 일할 때마다

we find that every single element needed to make a forest

우리는 숲을 만들기 위한 모든 개별 성분들이

is available right around us.

우리 주위에 있음을 발견하게 됩니다.

All we have to do is to bring these elements together

우리가 하는 일은 이러한 성분들을 함께 모으고

and let nature take over.

자연이 작용하도록 하는 것 뿐입니다.

To make a forest we start with soil.

숲을 만들기 위해서는 흙에서 시작해야 합니다.

We touch, feel and even taste it

우리는 그걸 만지고, 느끼고 맛보기까지 하면서

to identify what properties it lacks.

어떤 특성이 모자란지 알아냅니다.

If the soil is made up of small particles it becomes compact --

만약 흙이 작은 분자들로 이루어져 있으면

so compact, that water cannot seep in.

너무 조밀해서 물이 흡수되지 못합니다.

We mix some local biomass available around,

우리는 주변에서 구할 수 있는 현지 바이오매스를 섞어서

which can help soil become more porous.

흙의 투과성이 더욱 좋아지도록 합니다.

Water can now seep in.

이제 물이 흡수될 수 있죠.

If the soil doesn't have the capacity to hold water,

만약 흙이 물을 빨아드릴 능력이 없다면

we will mix some more biomass --

우리는 바이오매스를 혼합합니다.

some water-absorbent material like peat or bagasse,

토탄이나 사탕수수 찌꺼기처럼 물을 흡수하는 재료들을 말이죠.

so soil can hold this water and it stays moist.

그래서 흙이 물을 빨아들이고 촉촉하게 남도록 합니다.

To grow, plants need water, sunlight and nutrition.

식물들은 자라기 위해서 물과 햇빛과 영양소를 가져야 합니다.

What if the soil doesn't have any nutrition in it?

만약 토양에 영양분이 전혀 없다면 어떻게 하죠?

We don't just add nutrition directly to the soil.

우리는 흙에 바로 영양분을 주입하지는 않습니다.

That would be the industrial way.

그건 산업적인 방법일 거예요.

It goes against nature.

자연에 반하는 방법이죠.

We instead add microorganisms to the soil.

대신에 우리는 흙에 미생물을 넣습니다.

They produce the nutrients in the soil naturally.

미생물들은 흙에 영양분들을 자연적으로 생성합니다.

They feed on the biomass we have mixed in the soil,

우리가 흙에 섞었던 바이오매스에 영양을 공급합니다.

so all they have to do is eat and multiply.

미생물은 그저 먹고 번식하기만 하면 됩니다.

And as their number grows,

그 숫자가 늘어날수록

the soil starts breathing again.

흙이 다시 숨쉬기 시작합니다.

It becomes alive.

살아나기 시작하죠.

We survey the native tree species of the place.

우리는 그 곳의 토종 나무의 종을 조사합니다.

How do we decide what's native or not?

무엇이 토착종이고 무엇이 아닌지 어떻게 결정하냐고요?

Well, whatever existed before human intervention is native.

인간이 들어가기 전에 존재했던 모든 것은 토종입니다.

That's the simple rule.

간단한 법칙이죠.

We survey a national park

우리는 국립공원을 조사해서

to find the last remains of a natural forest.

자연삼림의 마지막 남은 것들을 찾습니다.

We survey the sacred groves,

우리는 신성한 숲

or sacred forests around old temples.

오래된 사원 주변의 신성한 삼림을 조사합니다.

And if we don't find anything at all,

우리가 아무것도 찾지 못할 때는

we go to museums

박물관으로 갑니다.

to see the seeds or wood of trees existing there a long time ago.

오래 전에 그곳에 존재했던 씨앗이나 나무들을 보기 위해서 말입니다.

We research old paintings, poems and literature from the place,

우리는 그곳의 오래된 그림, 시와 문학 등을 연구해서

to identify the tree species belonging there.

그곳에 속하는 나무 종들을 파악합니다.

Once we know our trees,

나무들에 대해 알게 되면

we divide them in four different layers:

우리는 이를 네 가지 다른 층으로 나눕니다.

shrub layer, sub-tree layer, tree layer and canopy layer.

관목층, 보조목층, 교목층, 표면층으로요.

We fix the ratios of each layer,

우리는 각 층의 비율을 정하고

and then we decide the percentage of each tree species in the mix.

전체 중에 각 나무종의 퍼센트를 정합니다.

If we are making a fruit forest,

만약 우리가 과일숲을 만든다면

we increase the percentage of fruit-bearing trees.

우리는 과일을 생산하는 나무들의 퍼센트를 높입니다.

It could be a flowering forest,

꽃숲이 되어

a forest that attracts a lot of birds or bees,

많은 새와 벌들을 유인하거나

or it could simply be a native, wild evergreen forest.

자연의 무성한 상록수 숲이 될 수도 있습니다.

We collect the seeds and germinate saplings out of them.

우리는 씨를 모으고 발아하여 묘목이 되게 합니다.

We make sure that trees belonging to the same layer

우리는 같은 층에 속한 나무들이

are not planted next to each other,

나란히 심어지지 않도록 조심하는데

or they will fight for the same vertical space when they grow tall.

그렇지 않으면 높이 자랄 때 같은 수직적 공간 확보를 위해 싸우기 때문입니다.

We plant the saplings close to each other.

우리는 묘목을 서로 가까이 심습니다.

On the surface, we spread a thick layer of mulch,

표면에는 두꺼운 뿌리덮개를 뿌려서

so when it's hot outside the soil stays moist.

바깥이 더울 때 흙의 습도를 유지하도록 합니다.

When it's cold,

추울 때는

frost formation happens only on the mulch,

뿌리 덮개에만 서리가 끼어서

so soil can still breathe while it's freezing outside.

밖이 얼도록 추울 때도 흙이 숨을 쉴 수 있게 합니다.

The soil is very soft --

땅은 매우 부드럽습니다.

so soft, that roots can penetrate into it easily,

너무 부드러워서 그 뿌리가 쉽게 관통할 수 있습니다.

rapidly.

빠르게요.

Initially, the forest doesn't seem like it's growing,

처음에는 숲이 자라는 것처럼 보이지 않았습니다.

but it's growing under the surface.

하지만 땅 밑으로는 자라고 있었죠.

In the first three months,

처음 세 달동안

roots reach a depth of one meter.

뿌리는 1m 가량 자랍니다.

These roots form a mesh,

이 뿌리들은 그물망을 형성하여

tightly holding the soil.

흙을 꽉 움켜쥡니다.

Microbes and fungi live throughout this network of roots.

미생물과 곰팡이는 이 뿌리의 그물망 도처에 자랍니다.

So if some nutrition is not available in the vicinity of a tree,

그래서 만약 나무 부근에 영양분이 없으면

these microbes are going to get the nutrition to the tree.

이 미생물들은 나무에 영양분을 공급할 것입니다.

Whenever it rains,

비가 올 때마다

magically,

마법처럼

mushrooms appear overnight.

버섯들이 밤새 나타납니다.

And this means the soil below has a healthy fungal network.

이는 밑에 있는 흙에 건강한 곰팡이 네트워크가 존재한다는 뜻입니다.

Once these roots are established,

이러한 뿌리들이 확고해지면

forest starts growing on the surface.

숲이 지면 위로 자라기 시작합니다.

As the forest grows we keep watering it --

숲이 자람에 따라 우리는 계속 물을 줍니다.

for the next two to three years, we water the forest.

2-3년 동안 숲에 물을 주죠.

We want to keep all the water and soil nutrition only for our trees,

우리는 모든 물과 토양 영양분을 나무에게만 주기 위해서

so we remove the weeds growing on the ground.

땅에 자라는 잡초를 제거합니다.

As this forest grows, it blocks the sunlight.

숲이 자람에 따라 햇빛을 차단합니다.

Eventually, the forest becomes so dense

결국 숲은 매우 빽빽해져서

that sunlight can't reach the ground anymore.

땅에 더이상 햇빛이 닿지 않게 되죠.

Weeds cannot grow now, because they need sunlight as well.

잡초도 햇빛을 필요로 하기 때문에 더이상 자라지 못합니다.

At this stage,

이 시점에서는

every single drop of water that falls into the forest

숲에 떨어지는 모든 물방울 하나가

doesn't evaporate back into the atmosphere.

대기로 다시 증발하지 않습니다.

This dense forest condenses the moist air

이 조밀한 숲이 슾한 공기를 농축하고

and retains its moisture.

그 습기를 유지합니다.

We gradually reduce and eventually stop watering the forest.

우리는 점차 숲에 물주는 것을 줄이고 결국 완전히 멈춥니다.

And even without watering,

물을 주지 않아도

the forest floor stays moist and sometimes even dark.

숲의 바닥은 축축하고 때로는 검기까지 합니다.

Now, when a single leaf falls on this forest floor,

잎 하나가 이 숲 바닥에 떨어지면

it immediately starts decaying.

바로 썩기 시작합니다.

This decayed biomass forms humus,

이 부패한 바이오매스가 부엽토를 형성하여

which is food for the forest.

숲의 식량이 됩니다.

As the forest grows,

숲이 자람에 따라

more leaves fall on the surface --

더 많은 잎들이 표면에 떨어지고

it means more humus is produced,

더 많은 부엽토가 생성되어

it means more food so the forest can grow still bigger.

더 많은 영양분으로 숲이 더 커지게 되죠.

And this forest keeps growing exponentially.

숲은 기하급수적으로 자라게 됩니다.

Once established,

한번 만들어지면

these forests are going to regenerate themselves again and again --

이 숲들은 스스로를 계속 재생산합니다.

probably forever.

아마 영원히요.

In a natural forest like this,

이런 자연림은

no management is the best management.

관리하지 않는 것이 제일 잘 관리하는 것입니다.

It's a tiny jungle party.

작은 정글 파티와 같죠.

This forest grows as a collective.

이 숲은 전체가 같이 자랍니다.

If the same trees --

같은 나무들

same species --

같은 종들이

would have been planted independently,

독립적으로 심어졌다면

it wouldn't grow so fast.

이렇게 빨리 자라지 못했겠죠.

And this is how we create a 100-year-old forest

이렇게 우리가 10년 안에 어떻게 100년 짜리 숲을 만들었는지 보여드렸습니다.

in just 10 years.
