This is a man-made forest.

આ માનવ-સર્જિત જંગલ છે.

It can spread over acres and acres of area,

I have a forest in the backyard of my own house.

It attracts a lot of biodiversity.

જે ઘણા પ્રકારની જૈવવિવિધતાને આકર્ષે છે.

who facilitates the making of these forests professionally.

જે આ જંગલ ધંધાકીય રીતે બનાવવા માટેની સગવડ પૂરી પડું છું.

We have helped factories,

અમે ફેકટરીઓને મદદ કરી છે,

farms,

ખેતરો,

schools,

શાળાઓ,

homes,

ઘરો,

resorts,

રિસોર્ટ,

apartment buildings,

બહુમળી ઇમારતો,

public parks

જાહેર બાગો,

and even a zoo

અને પ્રાણીસંગ્રહાલયોને પણ

to have one of such forests.

આવા વૃક્ષાવન ઉછેરી આપ્યા છે.

A forest is not an isolated piece of land where animals live together.

જંગલ એક જમીનનો અલાયદો ભાગ નથી જ્યાં પ્રાણીઓ સાથે રહે છે.

A forest can be an integral part of our urban existence.

જંગલ શહેરી વિસ્તારનો આંતરિક ભાગ પણ બની શકે છે

A forest, for me,

મારા માટે જંગલ,

is a place so dense with trees that you just can't walk into it.

એક એવી ઘટ્ટ જગ્યા છે જેની વચ્ચેથી ચાલી પણ ન શકીયે.

It doesn't matter how big or small they are.

એ કેટલા મોટા છે કે નાના એનું કશું મહત્વ નથી

Most of the world we live in today was forest.

દુનિયાનો મોટોભાગ જ્યાં આપણે રહીએ છીએ એ પહેલા જંગલ જ હતા

This was before human intervention.

માણસે હસ્તક્ષેપ કર્યો એ પહેલા.

Then we built up our cities on those forests,

પછી આપણે એ જંગલની ઉપર શહેરો સ્થાપ્યા.

like São Paulo,

જેમકે સાઓ પાઉલો,

forgetting that we belong to nature as well,

એ ભૂલીને કે આપણે પણ પ્રકૃતિ સાથે સંબંધિત છીએ,

as much as 8.4 million other species on the planet.

જે રીતે પૃથ્વી પરની બીજી ૮૪ લાખ પ્રજાતિ છે

Our habitat stopped being our natural habitat.

આપણી પ્રજાતિએ પ્રાકૃતિક પ્રજાતિ બનવાનું છોડી દીધું.

But not anymore for some of us.

પરંતુ આપણામાંથી બધા માટે નહિ .

A few others and I today make these forests professionally --

બીજા ઘણા અને હું આજે આ જંગલ ધંધાકીય રીતે આ જંગલો બનાવીએ છીએ--

anywhere and everywhere.

ગમે ત્યાં અને બધે.

I'm an industrial engineer.

હું એક ઔદ્યોગિક ઇજનેર છું.

I specialize in making cars.

મારી મહારત ગાડી બનાવવામાં છે.

In my previous job at Toyota,

મારી જૂની નોકરી ટોયોટા માં,

I learned how to convert natural resources into products.

હું શીખ્યો કે કઈરીતે પ્રકૃતિક સ્ત્રોતને ઉત્પાદનો માં બદલવું.

To give you an example,

એક ઉદાહરણ આપી શકું છું,

we would drip the sap out of a rubber tree,

આપણે રબરનાં વૃક્ષ માંથી સત્વનાં ટીપા બહાર કાઢીએ છીએ

convert it into raw rubber

and make a tire out of it -- the product.

But these products can never become a natural resource again.

We separate the elements from nature

and convert them into an irreversible state.

That's industrial production.

આ ઔદ્યોગિક ઉત્પાદન છે.

Nature, on the other hand, works in a totally opposite way.

બીજી તરફ, પ્રકૃતિ ઉલ્ટી દિશામાં કામ કરે છે.

The natural system produces by bringing elements together,

પ્રાકૃતિક પ્રણાલી તત્વોસાથે લાવીને ઉત્પાદન કરે છે.

atom by atom.

અણુ સાથે અણુ.

All the natural products become a natural resource again.

દરેક પ્રાકૃતિક ઉત્પાદન ફરીથી પ્રાકૃતિક સ્ત્રોતમાં રૂપાંતરિત થઇ શકે છે.

This is something which I learned

આ વસ્તુ હું શીખ્યો

when I made a forest in the backyard of my own house.

જ્યારથી મેં મારાં ઘરના પાછળનાં ભાગમાં જંગલ ઉગાડ્યા.

And this was the first time I worked with nature,

અને આ પ્રથમ વખત હતું કે મેં પ્રકૃતિ સાથે કામ કર્યું હોય

rather than against it.

એના વિરુદ્ધ નહિ

Since then,

ત્યારબાદ,

we have made 75 such forests in 25 cities across the world.

અમે ૭૫ આવા જંગલ દુનિયાભરનાં ૨૫ શહેરોમાં ઉછેર્યા

Every time we work at a new place,

દરેક વખતે અમે નવી જગ્યા પર કામ કરતા હતા,

we find that every single element needed to make a forest

અમને મળ્યું કે, જે વસ્તુ વૃક્ષાવન નાં ઉછેર માટે જરૂરી

is available right around us.

એ અમારી આસપાસ જ હતી.

All we have to do is to bring these elements together

અમારે માત્ર તેને સાથે લાવવાનું હતું

and let nature take over.

અને પ્રકૃતિ તેની જાળવણી જાતે કરી લે છે.

To make a forest we start with soil.

આ જંગલ બનાવવા માટે અમે માટીથી ચાલુ કરીએ છીએ.

We touch, feel and even taste it

અમે તેને સ્પર્શ કરીએ છીએ મહેસૂસ કરીએ છીએ અને ચાખીએ પણ છીએ

to identify what properties it lacks.

જાણવા માટે કે શું ઘટે છે.

If the soil is made up of small particles it becomes compact --

જો માટી નાના કણોની બનેલી હોય તો એ સખત બની જાય છે --

so compact, that water cannot seep in.

કે જેમાંથી પાણી ઉતરી શકતું નથી

We mix some local biomass available around,

અને તેમાં આસપાસ મળી આવતો જૈવિક કચરો ભેળવી દઈએ છીએ,

which can help soil become more porous.

જે તેને વધું છિદ્રાળુ બનાવે છે.

Water can now seep in.

હવે તેમાં પાણી ઉતરી શકે છે.

If the soil doesn't have the capacity to hold water,

જો માટીમાં પાણી રોકવાની ક્ષમતા ન હોય,

we will mix some more biomass --

તો એમાં થોડોક જૈવિક કચરો --

some water-absorbent material like peat or bagasse,

થોડુક પાણી - શોષક સામગ્રી જેમકે પીટ અથવા બગાસી મિશ્ર કરવામાં આવે છે,

so soil can hold this water and it stays moist.

જેથી માટી પાણી પકડી રાખે અને ભેજ જળવાય રહે

To grow, plants need water, sunlight and nutrition.

વધવા માટે, છોડને પાણી, સૂર્યપ્રકાશ અને પોષક તત્વો જોઈએ

What if the soil doesn't have any nutrition in it?

શું થાય જો માટી માં પોષક તત્વો જ ન હોય?

We don't just add nutrition directly to the soil.

અમે માત્ર તેમાં સીધા પોષકતત્વો ઉમેરતા નથી.

That would be the industrial way.

એ ઔદ્યોગિક માર્ગ થઇ જશે.

It goes against nature.

એ પ્રકૃતિ ની વિરુદ્ધ જશે.

We instead add microorganisms to the soil.

અમે તેમાં સુક્ષ્મજીવો ઉમેરીએ છીએ.

They produce the nutrients in the soil naturally.

તેઓ પોષકતત્વો પ્રાકૃતિક રીતે ઉત્પન્ન કરે છે

They feed on the biomass we have mixed in the soil,

તેઓ જેવિક કચરો ખાય છે જે માટીમાં મિશ્ર છે

so all they have to do is eat and multiply.

એમને માત્ર એ ખાઈને વધારવાનું છે

And as their number grows,

અને જેમ સંખ્યા વધે,

the soil starts breathing again.

તેમ જમીનનું શ્વસન ચાલુ થઇ જાય.

It becomes alive.

એ પુનર્જીવિત થઇ જાય છે.

We survey the native tree species of the place.

અમે ત્યાંના સ્થાનિક વૃક્ષોની પ્રજાતિનો સર્વે કર્યો.

How do we decide what's native or not?

અમે કઈરીતે નક્કી કરીએ કે એ સ્થનીક પ્રજાતિ છે કે નહિ?

Well, whatever existed before human intervention is native.

જે માનવનાં હસ્તક્ષેપ કર્યા પહેલા હતું એ સ્થાનિક છે .

That's the simple rule.

આ સામાન્ય નીયમ છે.

We survey a national park

અમે નેશનલ પાર્કનો સર્વે કર્યો

to find the last remains of a natural forest.

પ્રાકૃતિક જંગલનું મૂળ જાણવા માટે.

We survey the sacred groves,

અમે શુદ્ધ વનરાજીનો સર્વે કર્યો,

or sacred forests around old temples.

અથવા શુદ્ધ જંગલ જે જૂના મંદિર પાસે હતા.

And if we don't find anything at all,

અને જો અમને કશું મળતું નત્તું,

we go to museums

to see the seeds or wood of trees existing there a long time ago.

We research old paintings, poems and literature from the place,

to identify the tree species belonging there.

વૃક્ષોની જાત જે ત્યાં વર્ષોથી છે તે ઓળખવા.

Once we know our trees,

એકવાર અમારા વૃક્ષો મળી જાય,

we divide them in four different layers:

અમે તેને ૪ ભાગ માં અલગ તારવી દઈએ.

shrub layer, sub-tree layer, tree layer and canopy layer.

નાના સ્તર, પેટા વૃક્ષ સ્તર, વૃક્ષ સ્તર અને છત્ર સ્તર.

We fix the ratios of each layer,

અમે દરેકનાં પ્રમાણ નક્કી કરીએ છીએ.

and then we decide the percentage of each tree species in the mix.

અને એ નક્કી કરેલી ટકાવારી દરેક જાતિના વૃક્ષને આપીએ છીએ

If we are making a fruit forest,

જો અમે ફાળોનાં વન બનાવતા હોઈએ,

we increase the percentage of fruit-bearing trees.

તો અમે ફળ આપી શકે એવા વૃક્ષની ટકાવારી વધારીએ છીએ.

It could be a flowering forest,

એ ફળોનું વન પણ હોઈ શકે,

a forest that attracts a lot of birds or bees,

એક વન જે ઘણા પક્ષીઓ અને મધમાખીઓને આકર્ષે છે,

or it could simply be a native, wild evergreen forest.

અથવા એ સામાન્ય સ્થાનિક, સદાબહાર જંગલ બની શકે છે.

We collect the seeds and germinate saplings out of them.

અમે બીજ એકઠા કરીએ છીએ અને અંકુર ફોડીએ છીએ.

We make sure that trees belonging to the same layer

અમે એ વૃક્ષો ઉછેરી શકીએ છીએ જે એ સ્તરના છે

are not planted next to each other,

જે પાસે-પાસે ઉછેરવામાં આવતા નથી,

or they will fight for the same vertical space when they grow tall.

We plant the saplings close to each other.

On the surface, we spread a thick layer of mulch,

so when it's hot outside the soil stays moist.

When it's cold,

so soil can still breathe while it's freezing outside.

The soil is very soft --

જમીન બહુ નરમ છે --

so soft, that roots can penetrate into it easily,

અતિ નરમ, જેથી મૂળ આરામથી પ્રવેશી શકે.

rapidly.

જલ્દી.

Initially, the forest doesn't seem like it's growing,

શરૂઆતમાં, વનની વૃદ્ધિ થાય એવું દેખાશે જ નહિ.

but it's growing under the surface.

પરંતુ એ જમીનની અંદર વધે છે.

In the first three months,

પહેલા ત્રણ મહિના માં,

roots reach a depth of one meter.

મૂઓલ ૧ મીટર ઉંડા પહોચે છે.

These roots form a mesh,

આ મૂળ જાળીદાર રચના બનાવે છે,

tightly holding the soil.

માટીને ચુસ્તરીતે પકડી રાખે છે.

Microbes and fungi live throughout this network of roots.

સૂક્ષ્મજીવો અને ફૂગ આ આખા મૂળના જાળમાં રહે છે

So if some nutrition is not available in the vicinity of a tree,

જો કોઈ પોષકતત્વો તેની નજીકમાં હાજર ન હોય

these microbes are going to get the nutrition to the tree.

આ સુક્ષ્મજીવો તે પોશાક્તાત્વો શોધી લાવે છે

Whenever it rains,

જ્યારેપણ વરસાદ પડે છે,

magically,

જાદૂઈરીતે,

mushrooms appear overnight.

And this means the soil below has a healthy fungal network.

Once these roots are established,

એકવાર મૂળ સ્થપાય જાય,

forest starts growing on the surface.

ત્યારબાદ જંગલ ઉપર વધવાનું શરૂ થઇ જાય છે.

As the forest grows we keep watering it --

જંગલ વધવાનું શરૂ થાય જાય એટલે અમે તેને પાણી આપવાનું ચાલુ કરીએ છીએ--

for the next two to three years, we water the forest.

બે થી ત્રણ વર્ષ માટે, અમે પાણી આપીએ છીએ.

We want to keep all the water and soil nutrition only for our trees,

અમે દરેક પ્રકારના જરૂરી પાણી અને પોષક્તત્વો રાખવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરીએ છીએ,

so we remove the weeds growing on the ground.

એટલે ઉગી નીકળેલું નકામું ઘાસ કાઢી નાખીએ છીએ.

As this forest grows, it blocks the sunlight.

જેમ જંગલ વધે છે એ સૂર્યપ્રકાશને રોકે છે.

Eventually, the forest becomes so dense

આખરે, જંગલ એટલા ઘટ્ટ બની જાય છે

that sunlight can't reach the ground anymore.

કે સૂર્યપ્રકાશ જમીન સુધી પહોચી શકતો નથી.

Weeds cannot grow now, because they need sunlight as well.

નકામું ઘાસ હવે ઉગશે નહિ કેમકે એને સૂર્યપ્રકાશ જોઈએ.

At this stage,

આ સ્તર પર,

every single drop of water that falls into the forest

દરેક ટીપું જે જંગલમાં પડે છે,

doesn't evaporate back into the atmosphere.

એ વરાળ બનીને ક્યારેપણ વાતાવરણમાં ભળતું નથી

This dense forest condenses the moist air

ઘટ્ટ જંગલ ભેજવાળી હવાનું સંઘનન કરી

and retains its moisture.

અને ભેજ પાછો મેળવે છે.

We gradually reduce and eventually stop watering the forest.

અમે ધીરે ધીરે પાણી આપવાનું ઓછુ કરીએ છીએ અને છેલ્લે બંધ કરી દઈએ છીએ.

And even without watering,

અને પાણી વગર પણ.

the forest floor stays moist and sometimes even dark.

જંગલનું તળિયું ભેજવાળું રહે છે અને ક્યારેકતો અતિ ચીકણું.

Now, when a single leaf falls on this forest floor,

હવે, જયારે એક પાંદડું પણ વનની જમીન પર પડે,

it immediately starts decaying.

એ તરત સળવા માંડે છે.

This decayed biomass forms humus,

આ સડેલો જૈવિક કચરો ખાતર બનવા માંડે છે.

which is food for the forest.

જે વન માટે ખોરાક છે.

As the forest grows,

જેમ જંગલ વધે છે,

more leaves fall on the surface --

વધું પાંદડાઓ જમીન પર પડે છે --

it means more humus is produced,

જેનો મતલબ વધું ખાતર

it means more food so the forest can grow still bigger.

મતલબ વધું ભોજન જે જંગલને વધું મોટા બનાવે છે

And this forest keeps growing exponentially.

અને જંગલ ખુબ ઝડપી વધવા લાગે છે.

Once established,

એકવાર સ્થપાય ગયા બાદ,

these forests are going to regenerate themselves again and again --

આ જંગલ પોતાની જાતને વારંવાર ઉગાડતા જ રહે છે --

probably forever.

હમેશા માટે.

In a natural forest like this,

આના જેવા પ્રાકૃતિક જંગલ માં,

no management is the best management.

કોઈ મેનેજમેન્ટ શ્રેષ્ઠ મેનેજમેન્ટ નથી.

It's a tiny jungle party.

આ માત્ર એક નાની જંગલ મિજબાની છે.

This forest grows as a collective.

આ જંગલ સામૂહિક રીતે વધે છે.

If the same trees --

જો સરખા વૃક્ષો --

same species --

સરખી પ્રજાતિઓ --

would have been planted independently,

સ્વતંત્રરીતે વાવવામાં આવે,

it wouldn't grow so fast.

એ આટલી જલ્દી વધતા નથી.

And this is how we create a 100-year-old forest

અને આરીતે અમે ૧૦૦ વર્ષ જૂના જંગલ ઉગાડીએ છીએ

in just 10 years.

માત્ર ૧૦ વર્ષમાં.
