This is a man-made forest.

A forest is not an isolated piece of land where animals live together.

वनराई म्हणजे जिथे प्राणी एकत्र राहतात अशी वेगळी जागा नव्हे.

A forest can be an integral part of our urban existence.

वनराई आपल्या शहरी आयुष्याचाच एक भाग असू शकते.

A forest, for me,

माझ्या मते वनराई म्हणजे,

is a place so dense with trees that you just can't walk into it.

घनदाट झाडी जिच्यामधून तुम्ही चालूही शकणार नाही.

It doesn't matter how big or small they are.

ती झाडं किती मोठी किंवा छोटी आहेत हि गोष्ट अलहिदा.

Most of the world we live in today was forest.

आज आपण ज्या जगात राहतो त्याच्या बहुतांशी भागात वनराई होती

This was before human intervention.

असं मानवी हस्तक्षेपाच्या आधी होतं.

Then we built up our cities on those forests,

त्या वनराईच्या जागी मग आपण आपली शहरं वसवली,

like São Paulo,

साओ पावलो सारखी,

forgetting that we belong to nature as well,

हे विसरून कि आपण निसर्गाचा तेवढाच भाग आहोत,

as much as 8.4 million other species on the planet.

जेवढया या ग्रहावरच्या इतर ८४ लाख प्रजातीसुद्धा त्याचा भाग आहेत.

Our habitat stopped being our natural habitat.

आपला आवास आपला नैसर्गिक आवास राहिला नाही.

But not anymore for some of us.

पण आपल्यातल्या काही जणांसाठी आता तसं नाही.

A few others and I today make these forests professionally --

मी आणि आणखी काही जण अशी वनराई व्यावसायिक तत्वावर निर्माण करतो -

anywhere and everywhere.

कुठेही आणि सगळीकडे.

I'm an industrial engineer.

मी एक औद्योगिक अभियंता आहे

I specialize in making cars.

गाडयांच्या उत्पादनात मी निष्णात आहे.

In my previous job at Toyota,

मी टोयोटा कंपनीत कामाला असताना,

I learned how to convert natural resources into products.

To give you an example,

we would drip the sap out of a rubber tree,

convert it into raw rubber

and make a tire out of it -- the product.

But these products can never become a natural resource again.

We separate the elements from nature

and convert them into an irreversible state.

That's industrial production.

Nature, on the other hand, works in a totally opposite way.

The natural system produces by bringing elements together,

नैसर्गिक उत्पादन हे मूलकणांच्या एकत्रीकरणाने होते,

atom by atom.

अगदी प्रत्येक कणाच्या.

All the natural products become a natural resource again.

सगळी नैसर्गिक उत्पादनं पुन्हा नैसर्गिक स्रोत बनतात.

This is something which I learned

हे मी तेव्हा शिकलो जेव्हा मी

when I made a forest in the backyard of my own house.

माझ्या घराच्या परसात वनराई फुलवली

And this was the first time I worked with nature,

निसर्गाच्या सोबतीने काम करायची हि माझी पहिलीच वेळ होती,

rather than against it.

त्याच्या विरुद्ध नव्हे.

Since then,

तेव्हापासून,

we have made 75 such forests in 25 cities across the world.

जगभरातल्या २५ शहरांमधे आम्ही अशा ७५ वनराई फुलवल्या.

Every time we work at a new place,

दरवेळी जेव्हा आम्ही नवीन जागी काम करतो,

we find that every single element needed to make a forest

आम्हांला असं आढळतं कि वनराई तयार करण्यासाठी लागणारा प्रत्येक घटक

is available right around us.

आमच्या आसपासच असतो.

All we have to do is to bring these elements together

आम्हांला फक्त हे सगळे घटक एकत्र आणायचे असतात

and let nature take over.

आणि निसर्गाला त्याचं काम करू द्यायचं असतं.

To make a forest we start with soil.

वनराई फुलवण्यासाठी आम्ही जमिनीपासून सुरुवात करतो.

We touch, feel and even taste it

आम्ही तिचा पोत बघतो

to identify what properties it lacks.

आणि तिच्यात कोणते गुणधर्म नाहीत हे ठरवतो.

If the soil is made up of small particles it becomes compact --

मातीचे कण जर छोटे असतील तर ती घट्ट होते -

so compact, that water cannot seep in.

इतकी घट्ट की तिच्यात पाणी जिरू शकत नाही.

We mix some local biomass available around,

आम्ही तिथे उपलब्ध असलेलं बायोमास मिसळतो,

which can help soil become more porous.

त्यामुळे माती अधिक सच्छिद्र होते.

Water can now seep in.

आता पाणी जिरू शकतं.

If the soil doesn't have the capacity to hold water,

जर मातीत पाणी जिरू शकत नसेल,

we will mix some more biomass --

आम्ही अजून थोडं बायोमास मिसळतो --

some water-absorbent material like peat or bagasse,

कुजलेल्या वनस्पती किंवा ऊसाची चिपाडं यासारखं पाणी शोषणारं साहित्य,

so soil can hold this water and it stays moist.

To grow, plants need water, sunlight and nutrition.

वाढीसाठी झाडांना पाणी, सूर्यप्रकाश आणि पोषण लागतं.

What if the soil doesn't have any nutrition in it?

जमीन जर सकस नसेल तर काय?

We don't just add nutrition directly to the soil.

आम्ही जमिनीत पोषक पदार्थ थेट मिसळत नाही.

That would be the industrial way.

ती औद्योगिक पद्धत झाली.

It goes against nature.

ती निसर्गानियमाविरुद्ध आहे.

We instead add microorganisms to the soil.

त्याऐवजी मग आम्ही जमिनीत सूक्ष्मजीव मिसळतो.

They produce the nutrients in the soil naturally.

ते मातीत नैसर्गिकरित्या पोषक घटकांची निर्मिती करतात.

They feed on the biomass we have mixed in the soil,

आम्ही मिसळलेल्या बायोमासवर ते जगतात,

so all they have to do is eat and multiply.

त्यांना फक्त खायचं आणि वृद्धिंगत व्हायचं असतं.

And as their number grows,

आणि जशी त्यांची संख्या वाढते,

the soil starts breathing again.

तशी मातीत जान येते.

It becomes alive.

We survey the native tree species of the place.

How do we decide what's native or not?

त्या मूळ प्रजाती आहेत कि नाहीत हे आम्ही कसं ठरवतो

Well, whatever existed before human intervention is native.

मानवी हस्तक्षेपाआधी जे काही होतं ते तद्देशीयच होतं.

That's the simple rule.

हा अगदी साधा निकष आहे.

We survey a national park

आम्ही एका राष्ट्रीय उद्यानाचं सर्वेक्षण करतो

to find the last remains of a natural forest.

We survey the sacred groves,

आम्ही तपोवनांचं सर्वेक्षण करतो,

or sacred forests around old temples.

And if we don't find anything at all,

we go to museums

to see the seeds or wood of trees existing there a long time ago.

We research old paintings, poems and literature from the place,

to identify the tree species belonging there.

Once we know our trees,

एकदा कुठली झाडं आहेत हे कळलं

we divide them in four different layers:

shrub layer, sub-tree layer, tree layer and canopy layer.

We fix the ratios of each layer,

and then we decide the percentage of each tree species in the mix.

If we are making a fruit forest,

we increase the percentage of fruit-bearing trees.

It could be a flowering forest,

a forest that attracts a lot of birds or bees,

or it could simply be a native, wild evergreen forest.

We collect the seeds and germinate saplings out of them.

We make sure that trees belonging to the same layer

are not planted next to each other,

We plant the saplings close to each other.

On the surface, we spread a thick layer of mulch,

so when it's hot outside the soil stays moist.

When it's cold,

frost formation happens only on the mulch,

so soil can still breathe while it's freezing outside.

The soil is very soft --

so soft, that roots can penetrate into it easily,

Initially, the forest doesn't seem like it's growing,

सुरुवातीला वनराई वाढत नाहीये असं वाटतं,

but it's growing under the surface.

पण तिची वाढ जमिनीखाली चालू असते.

In the first three months,

पहिल्या तीन महिन्यांत,

roots reach a depth of one meter.

मूळ एक मीटर खोलीपर्यंत जातात.

These roots form a mesh,

tightly holding the soil.

Microbes and fungi live throughout this network of roots.

So if some nutrition is not available in the vicinity of a tree,

these microbes are going to get the nutrition to the tree.

Whenever it rains,

mushrooms appear overnight.

And this means the soil below has a healthy fungal network.

Once these roots are established,

forest starts growing on the surface.

As the forest grows we keep watering it --

for the next two to three years, we water the forest.

पुढच्या दोन ते तीन वर्षांपर्यंत आम्ही पाणी देतो.

We want to keep all the water and soil nutrition only for our trees,

आम्हांला पाणी आणि जमिनीचं पोषण फक्त आमच्या झाडांसाठी ठेवायचं आहे,

so we remove the weeds growing on the ground.

म्हणून जमिनीवरील तण आम्ही काढून टाकतो.

As this forest grows, it blocks the sunlight.

Eventually, the forest becomes so dense

that sunlight can't reach the ground anymore.

Weeds cannot grow now, because they need sunlight as well.

At this stage,

every single drop of water that falls into the forest

वनराईत पडणारा पाण्याचा

doesn't evaporate back into the atmosphere.

This dense forest condenses the moist air

हि घनदाट वनराई आर्द्र हवेला द्रवीभूत करते

and retains its moisture.

आणि तिची ओल कायम ठेवते.

We gradually reduce and eventually stop watering the forest.

आम्ही वनराईला पाणी देणं हळुहळू कमी करतो आणि अखेरीस ते देणं बंद करतो.

And even without watering,

आणि पाणी न देताही,

the forest floor stays moist and sometimes even dark.

वनराईची जमीन ओलसर राहते आणि कधीकधी गडददेखील.

Now, when a single leaf falls on this forest floor,

it immediately starts decaying.

This decayed biomass forms humus,

which is food for the forest.

As the forest grows,

more leaves fall on the surface --

it means more humus is produced,

it means more food so the forest can grow still bigger.

And this forest keeps growing exponentially.

Once established,

एकदा रुजल्या कि,

these forests are going to regenerate themselves again and again --

ह्या वनराई स्वतःचेच पुनर्निर्माण वारंवार करणार आहेत --

probably forever.

कदाचित कायमचेच.

In a natural forest like this,

यासारख्या नैसर्गिक वनराईत,

no management is the best management.

कुठलेही व्यवस्थापन न करणे हेच उत्तम.

It's a tiny jungle party.

हे एक छोटंसं वनसंमेलन आहे.

This forest grows as a collective.

या वनराईची वाढ सामूहिक असते.

If the same trees --

जर हीच झाडं --

same species --

याच प्रजाती --

would have been planted independently,

स्वतंत्रपणे लावल्या असत्या,

it wouldn't grow so fast.

त्यांची वाढ एवढ्या जोमाने झाली नसती.

And this is how we create a 100-year-old forest

आणि अशाप्रकारे आम्ही १०० वर्षांची वाटणारी वनराई निर्माण करतो

in just 10 years.
