I was afraid of womanhood.

من لە ژن بوون دەترسام.

Not that I'm not afraid now,

ئەمە مانای ئەوە نییـە کە ئێستا نەترسم،

but I've learned to pretend.

بەڵام فێربووم کە وا خۆم دەرخەم.

I've learned to be flexible.

فێربووم گونجاو بم.

In fact, I've developed some interesting tools

لەڕاستیدا، گەشەم بە چەند ئامرازێکی جێژبەخش دا

to help me deal with this fear.

بۆ ئەوەی یارمەتیم بدات لەگەڵ ترسەکەم هەڵ بکەم.

Let me explain.

با ڕوونی بکەمەوە.

لە ٦٠ و ٥٠ کانی سەدەی ڕابردوو، کە تازە پێ دەگەیشتم،

Back in the '50s and '60s, when I was growing up,

little girls were supposed to be kind and thoughtful

کچە بچووکەکان دەبوو میهرەبان و ژیر

and pretty and gentle and soft,

جوان و ڕووخۆش و نیان بن،

and we were supposed to fit into roles

و دەبوو ئێمە خۆمان بگونجێنین

that were sort of shadowy --

کە ئەمەش جۆرێک بوو لە نادیاری --

really not quite clear what we were supposed to be.

بەتەواوی ڕوون نەبوو لامان کە دەبووین بەچی.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

There were plenty of role models all around us.

چەندین جۆری کەسایەتی لە چواردەورماندا هەبوون.

We had our mothers, our aunts, our cousins, our sisters,

دایکمان هەبوو، پورمان، ئامۆزاکانمان، پورزاکانمان، خوشکەکانمان،

and of course, the ever-present media

و بە دڵنیایەوە، میدیا کە هەمیشە هەیە

bombarding us with images and words,

ئێمەیان وێنە و وشە باران کرد،

telling us how to be.

پێیان دەگوتین کە چۆن بین.

Now my mother was different.

ئینجا دایکم جیاواز بوو.

She was a homemaker,

ئەو ژنی ماڵەوە بوو،

but she and I didn't go out and do girlie things together,

من و ئەو نە دەچووینە دەرەوە، بەیەکەوە کارەکانمان دەکرد،

and she didn't buy me pink outfits.

و جلی پەمەیشی بۆ نە دەکڕیم.

Instead, she knew what I needed, and she bought me a book of cartoons.

بەڵام دەیزانی چیم پێوویست بوو، پەرتوکە کارتۆنییەکانی بۆ دەکڕیم.

And I just ate it up.

منیش چێژم لێی دەبینی.

I drew, and I drew,

وێنەم دەکێشا و دەکێشا،

and since I knew that humor was acceptable in my family,

و لەو کاتەوەی دەزانم خۆشی لە خێزانەکەمدا پەسەند کراوە،

I could draw, do what I wanted to do,

وێنەم دەکێشا، چیم ویستبا دەمکێشا،

and not have to perform, not have to speak --

نمایشم نە دەکردن، قسەشم نە دەکرد --

I was very shy --

من زۆر شەرمن بووم --

and I could still get approval.

بەڵام هەر دەمتوانی پەسندی وەربگرم.

I was launched as a cartoonist.

وەکو کاریکاتێر دەست بە کار بووم.

Now when we're young,

ئێستا کاتێک کە گەنجین،

we don't always know. We know there are rules out there,

هەموو کات نازانین. ئێمە دەزانین یاسا و ڕێسا هەن،

but we don't always know --

بەڵام هەموو جارێکیش نازانین --

we don't perform them right,

دروست پەیڕەویان ناکەین،

even though we are imprinted at birth

سەرەڕای ئەوەی کە لە کاتی دایکبوونمانەوە

with these things,

ئەم شتانەمان لەگەڵن،

and we're told

و پێمان گوتراوە

what the most important color in the world is.

چ ڕەنگێک گرینگترین ڕەنگە لە جیهاندا.

We're told what shape we're supposed to be in.

پێمان گوتراوە دەبێت ببینە چ شێوەیەک.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

We're told what to wear --

پێمان گوتراوە چ شتێکیش بپۆشین --

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

-- and how to do our hair --

هەروەها چۆنیش قژمان چاک بکەین --

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

-- and how to behave.

و چۆن هەڵسووکەوت بکەین-

Now the rules that I'm talking about

ئێستا ئەو یاسایانەی من باسیان دەکەم،

are constantly being monitored by the culture.

کلتور بە بەردەوامی چاودێریان دەکات.

We're being corrected,

ئێمە ڕاست دەکرێینەوە،

and the primary policemen are women,

و چاودێری سەرەکی ژنانن،

because we are the carriers of the tradition.

لەبەرئەوەی ئێمە گرنگی بە داب و نەریت دەدەین.

We pass it down from generation to generation.

ئێمە لە نەوەیەکەوە بۆ نەوەیەکی تر دەیگوازینەوە.

Not only that --

بە تەنها ئەوەندە نییە --

we always have this vague notion

هەمیشە ئێمە ئەم بیرۆکە ناڕونەمان هەیە کە

that something's expected of us.

هەندێک شت لە ئێمە چاوەڕێ دەکرێت.

And on top of all off these rules,

و لە سەرووی هەموو ئەم یاسانەوەیە،

they keep changing.

بە بەردەوامی دەگۆڕێن.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

We don't know what's going on half the time,

لە زۆربەی کاتەکاندا، ئێمە نازانین چی دەگوزەرێت،

so it puts us in a very tenuous position.

ئەمەش دەمانخاتە دۆخی گومان و لاوازییەوە.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

Now if you don't like these rules,

ئێستا ئەگەر ئەم یاسا و ڕێسانەت بەدڵ نییە،

and many of us don't --

و زۆرێکمان بەدڵمان نییە --

I know I didn't, and I still don't,

من دەزانم بەدڵم نەبووە، و هێشتاش بە دڵم نییە،

even though I follow them half the time,

تەنانەت ئێستاش زۆر جار پەیڕەویان دەکەم،

not quite aware that I'm following them --

بێ ئەوەی ئاگام لێبێت شوێنیان کەووتووم --

what better way than to change them [than] with humor?

چ ڕێگەیەکی باشتر هەیە لە وەی ئەو داب و نەریتانە بگۆڕین بەخۆشی؟

Humor relies on the traditions of a society.

گیانی گاڵتە و گەپ پشت بە داب و نەریتی کۆمەڵگە دەبەستێت.

It takes what we know, and it twists it.

پشت دەبەستێت بەوەی چی دەزانین، و چی بەدەوری ئەمانە دەسوڕێتەوە.

It takes the codes of behavior and the codes of dress,

پشت دەبەستێت بە یاساکانی ڕەفتار و شێوازی جلوبەرگ،

and it makes it unexpected,

ئەمەش وا دەکات چاوەڕوان نەکراو دەبێت،

and that's what elicits a laugh.

ئەمەش ئەوەیە کە پێکەنینەکە سەرچاوەی لێگرتووە

Now what if you put together women and humor?

ئێستا چی دەبێت ئەگەر بێتوو ژن و گاڵتە پێکەوە دابنێن؟

I think you can get change.

من پێموایە دەتوانی گۆڕانکاری بکەیت.

Because women are on the ground floor,

لەبەر ئەوەی ژنان لە چینی یەکەمن،

and we know the traditions so well,

و ئێمە ئەم داب و نەریتانە باش دەزانین،

we can bring a different voice to the table.

ئێمە دەتوانین دەنگی جیاواز بێنینە ناو مەیدانەکەوە.

Now I started drawing

ئێستا من دەستم بە وێنە کێشان کرد

in the middle of a lot of chaos.

لە ناوەڕاستی ئەم هەموو ئاژاوانەدا.

I grew up not far from here in Washington D.C.

لە نزیک ئێرەوە، واشنتۆن، گەورە بووم.

during the Civil Rights movement, the assassinations,

کە بزوتنەوەی مافەکانی هاوڵاتیان، کوشتن و کوشتار،

the Watergate hearings and then the feminist movement,

قسە و قسەڵۆک لەسەر وەتەگەیت و بزوتنەوەی فێمنستی لە ئارادا بوون،

and I think I was drawing,

من پێموایە وێنەم دەکێشا،

trying to figure out what was going on.

هەوڵم دەدا کە تێ بگەم چی ڕوودەدات.

And then also my family was in chaos,

و هەروەها دواتر خێزانەکەشم لە ئاژاوەدا بوون،

and I drew to try to bring my family together --

و وێنەم دەکێشا هەوڵم دەدا وێنەی خێزانەکەشم لەگەڵی بکێشم--

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

-- try to bring my family together with laughter.

هەوڵم دەدا خێزانەکەشم بهێنمە پێکەنین لەگەڵی.

It didn't work.

سەری نەگرت.

My parents got divorced, and my sister was arrested.

دایکم جیابوویەوە، هەروەها خوشکەکەشم گیرا.

But I found my place.

بەڵام من شوێنی خۆم دۆزیەوە.

I found that I didn't have to wear high heels,

تێگەیشتم کە پێویست ناکات من پێڵاوی بەر لە پێ بکەم،

I didn't have to wear pink,

پێوویست نەبوو جلی پەمەیی لەبەر بکەم،

and I could feel like I fit in.

هەستم دەکرد کە من حەزم لەمەیە.

Now when I was a little older, in my 20s,

ئێستا کە کەمێک گەورەتر بوومە، لە تەمەنی ٢٠ ساڵیدا،

I realized there are not many women in cartooning.

درکم بەوە کرد ژنی زۆر لە بواری کاریکاتێریدا کار ناکەن.

And I thought, "Well, maybe I can break

بیرم کردەوە، "لەوانەیە من بتوانم بنمیچی

the little glass ceiling of cartooning,"

شوشە بچوکەکانی کاریکاتێری بشکێنم،"

and so I did. I became a cartoonist.

کردم و بووم بە کاریکاتێر.

And then I thought -- in my 40s I started thinking,

و دواتر بیرم کردەوە -- لە ٤٠کانی تەمەنم دەستم بە تێڕامان کرد،

"Well, why don't I do something?

"باشە ، بۆ من شتێک نەکەم؟

I always loved political cartoons,

هەمیشە کاریکاتێرە سیاسییەکانم بەدڵ بووە،

so why don't I do something with the content of my cartoons

باشە بۆچی من شتێک نەکەم لە ناوەڕۆکی کارتۆنەکانم،

to make people think about the stupid rules that we're following

بۆ ئەوەی وا لەخەڵک بکەم بیر بکاتەوە لە گەمژەیی ئەو داب و

as well as laugh?"

نەریتانەی شوێنی کەووتووین هەروەها پێکەنینیش؟"

Now my perspective

ئێستا بیرکردنەوەی من

is a particularly --

بەتایبەتی --

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

-- my perspective is a particularly American perspective.

تێڕوانینی من تەواو تێڕوانینێکی ئەمریکیانەیە.

I can't help it. I live here.

من ناتوانم یارمەتی بدەم. من لێرە دەژیم.

Even though I've traveled a lot,

تەنانەت گەشتی زۆریشم کردووە،

I still think like an American woman.

من هێشتا وەکو ژنێکی ئەمریکی بیردەکەمەوە.

But I believe that the rules that I'm talking about

بەس من وابیر دەکەمەوە ئەو داب و نەریتانەی من لەبارەیان

are universal, of course --

قسە دەکەم جیهانین، بەدڵنیایەوە-

that each culture has its different codes of behavior

هەر کولتورێک کۆدی جیاوازی هەیە لەڕەفتاردا

and dress and traditions,

جلوبەرگ و دابونەریتی خۆی هەیە،

and each woman has to deal with these same things

هەر ژنێکیش دەبێ ڕەفتار لەگەڵ ئەم شتانەدا بکات

that we do here in the U.S.

وەکو ئێمە کە لێرە دەیکەین.

Consequently, we have.

هەروەها ، ئێمەش دەبێت

Women, because we're on the ground, we know the tradition.

وەک ژنان، لەبەرئەوەی ئێمە لەسەر زەوین داب و نەریتەکان دەزانین.

We have amazing antennae.

ئێمە ئالیاری سەرنج ڕاکێشمان هەیە.

Now my work lately

ئێستا ئیشەکەم بەم دوایانە

has been to collaborate with international cartoonists,

بووە بە هەماهەنگی کردنی کاریکاتێڕە نێودەوڵەتییەکان،

which I so enjoy,

کە من زۆر چێژی لێدەبینم،

and it's given me a greater appreciation

کە ئەمەش بەهایەکی زیاترم پێ دەدا

for the power of cartoons

بۆ هێزی کارتۆنەکان

to get at the truth,

بۆ ئەوەی ڕاستی دەست بخات،

to get at the issues quickly and succinctly.

بۆ ئەوەی کارەکان خێرا و پوخت بە دەست بێن.

And not only that, it can get to the viewer

تەنها ئەمەش نا، بۆ ئەوەی بگاتە دیدی بینەرانیش

through not only the intellect, but through the heart.

بە تەنها لە ڕێگەی فکرەوە نا، بەڵکو لە ڕێگەیی دڵەوە.

My work also has allowed me to collaborate

کارەکەشم ڕێی پێدام هەماهەنگی بکەم

with women cartoonists from across the world --

لەگەڵ ژنانی کاریکاتێڕ لە هەموو جیهاندا --

countries such as Saudi Arabia,

لە وڵاتانی وەک سعودیا،

Iran, Turkey,

ئێران و تورکیا،

Argentina, France --

ئەرجەنتین و فەڕەنسا --

and we have sat together and laughed

و ئێمە بەیەکەوە دانشتین و پێکەنین

and talked and shared our difficulties.

قسەمان کرد و باسی لەمپەرەکانمان کرد.

And these women are working so hard to get their voices heard

ئەم ژنانە زۆر بەسەختی کار دەکەن بۆئەوەی دەنگیان ببیسترێ

in some very difficult circumstances.

ئەمە بارودۆخێکی زۆر قورسە.

But I feel blessed to be able to work with them.

من هەست بە گەورەی و پیرۆزی دەکەم ئەگەر بتوانم کاریان لەگەڵ بکەم.

And we talk about

و ئێمە قسە دەکەین دەربارەی

how women have such strong perceptions,

ژن چۆن گرینگ و پێزانینی بەهێزی هەبێت بۆ خۆی،

because of our tenuous position

لەبەر پێگە لاوازەکانمان،

and our role as tradition-keepers,

و ڕۆڵی ئێمە وەک پارێزەری داب و نەریتەکان،

that we can have the great potential

کە ئێمە دەتوانین توانایەکی مەزنمان هەبێت

to be change-agents.

بۆ ئەوەی ببین بە بریکاری گۆڕانکاری.

And I think, I truly believe,

و من پێموایە، بەڕاستی باوڕم وایە،

that we can change this thing

ئێمە دەتوانین ئەم شتە بگۆڕین.

one laugh at a time.

پێکەنینێک لە کاتێکدا.
