I am a gay talking head on Fox News.

I am going to tell you how I do it,

and the most important thing I've learned.

So I go on television.

I debate people who literally want to obliterate everything I believe in --

in some cases, who don't want me and people like me to even exist.

It's sort of like Thanksgiving with your conservative uncle

on steroids,

with a live television audience of millions.

It's totally almost just like that.

And that's just on air.

The hate mail I get is unbelievable.

Last week alone, I got 238 pieces of nasty email

and more hate tweets than I can even count.

I was called an idiot, a traitor, a scourge,

and that was just in one email.

So what have I realized,

being on the receiving end of all this ugliness?

Well, my biggest takeaway

is that for decades, we've been focused on political correctness,

با نموونەکی بچوکتان بدەمێ.

ئەگەر پێم بڵێن هاوڕەگەزباز گوێی پێ نادەم. بەڕاستی لام گرنگ نییە.

but what matters more is emotional correctness.

دوو شتم لا گرینگە.

Let me give you a small example.

I don't care if you call me a dyke. I really don't.

I care about two things.

بە خێرایی، کە د -ی -ک -ییە.

One, I care that you spell it right.

(Laughter) (Applause)

Just quick refresher, it's D-Y-K-E.

You'd totally be surprised.

And second, I don't care about the word, I care about how you use it.

باشکردنی هەستی یەکتر ئاوازێکە، هەستێکە،

Are you being friendly? Are you just being naive?

Or do you really want to hurt me personally?

چۆن ئەوە دەردەبڕین کە دەیڵێین،

ڕێزو میهره‌بانی پیشانی یەکتر بدەین.

Emotional correctness is the tone, the feeling,

ئەوەی هەستم پێکردووە خواستی سیاسی

لە بیرۆکە و ڕاستی و داتای دروست دەست پێ ناکات.

how we say what we say,

the respect and compassion we show one another.

خواستی سیاسی لە باشکردنی هەستی یەکترەوە دەست پێ دەکات.

And what I've realized is that political persuasion

doesn't begin with ideas or facts or data.

کاتێک بۆ یەکەمجار چووم لە كه‌ناڵی فۆكس ئیش بکەم،

بەڕاستی دانی پێ دابنێم،

Political persuasion begins with being emotionally correct.

پێشبینیم کرد كە لە هەموو سوچێكی مافوورەكە

ئاماژەی ڕاكێشانی هەبێت.

So when I first went to go work at Fox News,

بەهەر حاڵ، ئەو حاڵەتەی ئێوە ئاگاداری بوون، باشکردنی هەستی یەکتر نەبوو.

true confession,

I expected there to be marks in the carpet

بەڵام لەگەڵ لیبڕاڵەکان

from all the knuckle-dragging.

دەتوانین خۆ بەڕاست دابنێن، بە فیزەوە مامەڵە بکەین،

That, by the way, in case you're paying attention, is not emotionally correct.

و هەموو خەڵک ڕەتکەینەوە کە ئێمە قبووڵ ناکەن.

But liberals on my side,

بە مانایەکیتر: دەکرێت ئێمە ڕاستڕەو بین

we can be self-righteous, we can be condescending,

بەڵام لە ڕوی هه‌سته‌وە هەڵە بین.

we can be dismissive of anyone who doesn't agree with us.

خەڵک ئێمه‌ی خۆشناوێ. ڕاسته‌؟

In other words, we can be politically right

but emotionally wrong.

ئەوە کاردانەوەکەیە.

پارێزگارەکان بەڕاستی باشن.

And incidentally, that means that people don't like us. Right?

مەبەستم، هەموویان نییە،

ئەوانەش نا كه‌ ئیمەیڵی ناحەزم بۆدەنێرن،

دەبێ سەرتان سوڕمابێ.

Now here's the kicker.

شوان هانیتی یەکێکە لە شیرنترین گەنجەکان تا ئێستا بینیبێتم.

Conservatives are really nice.

I mean, not all of them,

کاتە بەتاڵەکانی بۆ ئامادەکردنی ژوانەکانی تەرخان دەکات

and not the ones who send me hate mail,

but you would be surprised.

Sean Hannity is one of the sweetest guys I've ever met.

و دەزانم هەرکاتێک کێشەیەکم هەبووبێت،

هەموو شتێکی بۆ یارماتیدان کردوە.

He spends his free time trying to fix up his staff on blind dates,

پێم وایە شیان هەنیتی سەدا ٩٩ سیاسیانە هەڵەیە،

and I know that if I ever had a problem,

بەڵام هەستی ڕاستی سەرسوڕهێنەرێکی مەزنە.

he would do anything he could to help.

Now, I think Sean Hannity is 99 percent politically wrong,

بۆیە خەڵک گوێی بۆ دەگرن.

چونكه‌ كه‌س ڕازی نابێت له‌گه‌ڵت

ئەگەر یەکەمجار گوێیان لێ نەگرتی.

but his emotional correctness is strikingly impressive.

کاتی زۆرمان بەسەر برد بە باسکردنی ڕابروی یەکتر

And that's why people listen to him.

Because you can't get anyone to agree with you

و کاتی پێویست نییە بۆ باسکردنی ناقایلەکان.

if they don't even listen to you first.

ئەگەر بتوانین دەست بکەین بە میهرەبانی بۆ یەکتری،

We spend so much time talking past each other

و دواتر له‌ خاكێكی هاوبه‌ش یەکتر بگرینەوە.

and not enough time talking through our disagreements.

And if we can start to find compassion for one another,

به‌ڕاستی له‌ هۆكی ده‌چێ تا بڵێین لێره‌وه‌ ده‌ست پێ ده‌كات،

بەڵام کاتێک ده‌یخه‌یه‌ ڕاههێنانه‌وه‌،

then we have a shot at building common ground.

بەڕاستی زۆر بەهێزە.

ئەوەی دەڵێ ڕقم لە کۆچبەرانە،

It actually sounds really hokey to say it standing up here,

هەوڵ دەدەم خەیاڵ بکەم کە چەند ترسناکن

but when you try to put it in practice,

کە کۆماڵگەکەیان لەوەی هەمیشە دەیزانن دەگۆرێت.

it's really powerful.

So someone who says they hate immigrants,

یا ئەوەی دەڵێ یەکیەتی مامۆستایانم خۆشناوێت،

I try to imagine how scared they must be

دڵنیام بێتاقەتن بە بینینی تەڕبوونی قوتابخانەی منداڵەکانیان،

that their community is changing from what they've always known.

بەدوای کەسێکدا دەگەڕێن تا تاوانباری بکەن.

Or someone who says they don't like teachers' unions,

بەرەنگاریه‌كانمان بۆ دۆزینەوەی میهرەبانیانه‌

I bet they're really devastated to see their kid's school going into the gutter,

کە دەمانەوێ بۆ ئێمە هەیانبێت.

and they're just looking for someone to blame.

ئەوە هەستی ڕاستەقینەیە.

Our challenge is to find the compassion for others

ناڵێم ئاسانه‌.

به‌ڕێژه‌یی،5.6 جار هەموو ڕۆژێک

that we want them to have for us.

دەمەوێ لە وەڵامدانەوەی هەموو ئەو نامە ناحازانە بوه‌ستم

That is emotional correctness.

لەگەڵ ئەو گێژاوە وشە خراپە.

I'm not saying it's easy.

An average of, like, 5.6 times per day

دۆزینەوەی میهرەبانی و خاڵی هاوبه‌ش له‌گه‌ڵ دوژمنەکانت

I have to stop myself from responding to all of my hate mail

with a flurry of vile profanities.

وه‌ك ڕاهێنانی ڕوحی سیاسین بۆ من،

This whole finding compassion and common ground with your enemies thing

من دالای لاما نیم.

تەواو نیم، بەس گەشبینم.

is kind of like a political-spiritual practice for me,

and I ain't the Dalai Lama.

چونکە تەنها ئیمەیڵی ناحەزم بۆ نایەت.

I'm not perfect, but what I am is optimistic.

بەڕاستی نامەی زۆر جوانیشم بۆ دێت.

Because I don't just get hate mail.

I get a lot of really nice letters, lots of them.

And one of my all-time favorites begins:

"I am not a big fan of your political leanings

or your sometimes tortured logic,

ئەو گەنجە تا ئێستاش لەگەڵم هاوڕا نییە.

but I'm a big fan of you as a person."

بەڵام گوێ دەگرێت--

Now this guy doesn't agree with me -- yet.

نەک لەبەروەی چ دەڵێم، بەڵکە لەبەر ئەوەی چۆن دەیڵێم.

(Laughter)

هەر چەندە یەکترمان نەدیتییە بەڵام توانیمان په‌یوه‌ندی دروست بكه‌ین.

But he's listening --

ئەوە هەستی ڕاستەقینەیە،

not because of what I said, but because of how I said it.

و بەم شێوەیە گفتوگۆمان دەست پێکرد

And somehow, even though we've never met, we've managed to form a connection.

کە ڕێگەی بۆ گۆڕانکاری خۆش کرد.

That's emotional correctness,

and that's how we start the conversations

that really lead to change.
