When I was six years old,

I received my gifts.

دیارییەکانم وەرگرت.

My first grade teacher had this brilliant idea.

مامۆستای پۆلی یەکەمم ئەو بیرۆکە ناوازەیەی هەبوو.

She wanted us to experience receiving gifts

دەیەویست لە وەرگرتنی دیارییەکان شارەزابین

but also learning the virtue of complimenting each other.

So she had all of us come to the front of the classroom,

بۆیە هەموومانی بۆ بەردەم پۆلەکە نارد،

and she bought all of us gifts and stacked them in the corner.

دیاری بۆ هەموومان کڕیبوو لە لایەک کۆمەڵی کردبوو.

And she said,

و گوتی،

"Why don't we just stand here and compliment each other?

"بۆچی لێرە نەوەستین و یەکتر ستایش بکەین؟

If you hear your name called,

ئەگەر گوێت لە ناوەکەت بوو،

go and pick up your gift and sit down."

هەستە دیارییەکەت هەڵبگرە و دابنیشە."

What a wonderful idea, right?

What could go wrong?

Well, there were 40 of us to start with,

and every time I heard someone's name called,

I would give out the heartiest cheer.

And then there were 20 people left,

and 10 people left,

and five left ...

and three left.

And I was one of them.

و من یەکێك بووم لەوان.

And the compliments stopped.

ستایشکردن وەستا.

Well, at that moment, I was crying.

لەوکاتەدا، گریام.

And the teacher was freaking out.

مامۆستاکە هەستی کرد کۆنتڕۆڵ لەدەست دەدات.

She was like, "Hey, would anyone say anything nice about these people?"

وەک ئەوەبوو بڵێ، "کەسێک هەیە شتێکی جوان لەسەر ئەم کەسانە بڵێت؟"

"No one? OK, why don't you go get your gift and sit down.

someone might say something nice about you."

Well, as I'm describing this you,

باشە، من باستان دەکەم،

you probably know I remember this really well.

But I don't know who felt worse that day.

بەڵام نازانم ئەو ڕۆژە کێ هەستی خراپتر بوو.

Was it me or the teacher?

ئایا من بووم یان مامۆستاکە؟

She must have realized that she turned a team-building event

بۆی دەرکەوت کە بۆنەیەکی دروستکردنی تیمی گۆڕی

into a public roast for three six-year-olds.

بۆ بۆنەیەکی گاڵتەجاڕی بۆ سێ منداڵی ٦ ساڵان.

And without the humor.

بەبێ بوونی هیچ هەستێکی گالتەجاڕی.

You know, when you see people get roasted on TV,

دەزانن، کاتێک لە تەلەزیۆن خەڵک دەبینن فریو دەدرێن،

it was funny.

پێکەنیناوی دەردەکەوێت.

There was nothing funny about that day.

ئەو ڕۆژە هیچ شتێکی پێکەنیناوی نەبوو.

So that was one version of me,

ئەوە یەک بەشی من بوو،

and I would die to avoid being in that situation again --

to get rejected in public again.

That's one version.

Then fast-forward eight years.

Bill Gates came to my hometown --

بیل گەیتس هات بۆ شارەکەم --

Beijing, China --

to speak,

بۆ قسەکردن،

and I saw his message.

نامەکەیم بینی.

I fell in love with that guy.

ئەو پیاوەم خۆشویست.

I thought, wow, I know what I want to do now.

بیرم کردەوە، بەڵێ، ئیستا دەزانم دەمەوێ چی بکەم.

That night I wrote a letter to my family

ئەو شەوە نامەیەکم بۆ خێزانەکەم نووسی

telling them: "By age 25,

پێم گوتن: "لەتەمەنی ٢٥ ساڵی،

I will build the biggest company in the world,

گەورەترین کۆمپانیا لە جیهاندا دادەمەزرێنم،

and that company will buy Microsoft."

I totally embraced this idea of conquering the world --

domination, right?

And I didn't make this up, I did write that letter.

that was another version of me:

one who will conquer the world.

Well, then two years later,

باشە، پاش دوو ساڵ،

I was presented with the opportunity to come to the United States.

هەلم بۆ ڕەخسا تا بۆ ویلایەتە یەکگرتووەکان بێم.

I jumped on it,

ئەو هەلەم قۆزتەوە،

because that was where Bill Gates lived, right?

چونکە بیل گەیتس لەوێ دەژیا، وایە؟

I thought that was the start of my entrepreneur journey.

Then, fast-forward another 14 years.

I was 30.

Nope, I didn't build that company.

I was actually a marketing manager for a Fortune 500 company.

And I felt I was stuck;

I was stagnant.

Why is that?

Where is that 14-year-old who wrote that letter?

ئەو منداڵە ١٤ ساڵەی ئەو نامەیەی نووسی لەکوێیە؟

It's not because he didn't try.

لەبەر ئەوە نییە کە هەوڵی نەدا.

It's because every time I had a new idea,

چونکە هەموو کات بیرۆکەی نوێم هەبوو،

every time I wanted to try something new,

هەموو کات دەمەویست هەوڵی شتی نوێ بدەم،

even at work --

تەنانەت لەکاردا --

I wanted to make a proposal,

دەمەویست پێشنیار بکەم،

I wanted to speak up in front of people in a group --

دەمەویست لەبەردەم کۆمەڵێك خەڵک قسە بکەم --

I felt there was this constant battle

هەستم دەکرد جەنگێکی نەگۆڕ هەیە

between the 14-year-old and the six-year-old.

لەنێوان ١٤ ساڵان و شەش ساڵان.

One wanted to conquer the world --

یەکیان دەیەویست بەسەر جیهاندا سەربکەوێت --

make a difference --

جیاوازی دروستکات --

another was afraid of rejection.

ئەوەی تر ترسابوو لە ڕەتکردنەوە.

And every time that six-year-old won.

هەمووکات ئەو شەش ساڵە براوە بوو.

And this fear even persisted after I started my own company.

تەنانەت پاش دەستپێکردنی کۆمپانیاکەی خۆم ئەو ترسە بەردەوام بوو.

I mean, I started my own company when I was 30 --

مەبەستم، کاتێک ٣٠ ساڵ بووم دەستم بە کۆمپانیاکەم کرد --

if you want to be Bill Gates,

ئەگەر دەتەوێت بیل گەیتس بیت،

you've got to start sooner or later, right?

پێویستە زوو یان درەنگ دەستپێبکەیت، ڕاستە؟

When I was an entrepreneur,

کاتێک ڕابەری کارەکان بووم،

I was presented with an investment opportunity,

دەرفەتێکی وەبەرهێنانم بۆ هات،

and then I was turned down.

And that rejection hurt me.

ئەو ڕەتکردنەوەیە ئازاریدام.

It hurt me so bad that I wanted to quit right there.

زۆر بەخراپی ئازاریدام ویستم یەکسەر وازبهێنم.

But then I thought,

بەڵام بیرم کردەوە،

hey, would Bill Gates quit after a simple investment rejection?

ئایا، بیل گەیتس پاش رەتکردنەوەیەکی بچووکی وەبەرهێنان وازیهێنا؟

Would any successful entrepreneur quit like that?

ئایا هیچ خاوەن کارێکی سەرکەوتوو بەم شێوەیە وازیهێناوە؟

No way.

مەحاڵە.

And this is where it clicked for me.

لێرەوە بیرۆکە دەستی پێکرد.

OK, I can build a better company.

بەڵێ، دەتوانم کۆمپانیایەکی باشتر دروستبکەم.

I can build a better team or better product,

دەتوانم تیمێک یان بەرهەمێکی باشتر دروست بکەم،

but one thing for sure:

بەڵام لە یەک شت دڵنیابووم:

I've got to be a better leader.

پێویستە ببم بەباشترین ڕابەر.

I've got to be a better person.

I cannot let that six-year-old keep dictating my life anymore.

I have to put him back in his place.

پێویستە لە ڕابردوو لە شوێنی خۆی داینێم.

So this is where I went online and looked for help.

بۆیە دەستم کرد بە گەڕان بۆ یارمەتی لە سەر هێڵ.

Google was my friend.

گوگڵ هاوڕێم بوو.

(Laughter)

I searched, "How do I overcome the fear of rejection?"

گەڕام، "چۆن بەسەر ترسی ڕەتکردنەوەدا زاڵ دەبیت؟"

I came up with a bunch of psychology articles

هەندێک بابەتی دەروونزانیم دۆزییەوە

about where the fear and pain are coming from.

دەربارەی ترس و ئازار لەکوێوە دێن.

Then I came up with a bunch of "rah-rah" inspirational articles

پاشان هەندێک بابەتی هاندانم دۆزیەوە.

about "Don't take it personally, just overcome it."

دەربارەی " بە شەخسی مەزانە، تەنها زاڵبە بەسەریدا."

Who doesn't know that?

کێ ئەمە نازانێ؟

But why was I still so scared?

بەڵام بۆچی هێشتا دەترسام؟

Then I found this website by luck.

پاشان ئەو ماڵپەڕەم بە ڕێکەوت دۆزییەوە.

It's called rejectiontherapy.com.

بەناوی rejection therapy.com.

(Laughter)

"Rejection Therapy" was this game invented by this Canadian entrepreneur.

"چارەسەری ڕەتکردنەوە" یارییەک بوو پیاوێکی بازرگانی کەنەدی دایهێنا.

His name is Jason Comely.

ناوی جەیسن کەمڵییە.

And basically the idea is for 30 days you go out and look for rejection,

بیرۆکەکە بەشێوەیەکی سەرەکی بۆ ٣٠ ڕۆژ چوونە دەرەوەو گەڕان بوو بۆ ڕەتکردنەوە،

and every day get rejected at something,

هەموو ڕۆژێک لە شتێکدا ڕەتدەکرێیتەوە.

and then by the end, you desensitize yourself from the pain.

دواتر لە کۆتاییدا، خۆت لەسەر ئازار ڕادێنی.

And I loved that idea.

ئەو بیرۆکەیەم بە دڵ بوو.

(Laughter)

I said, "You know what? I'm going to do this.

گوتم، " دەزانی چی؟ ئەو کارە دەکەم.

And I'll feel myself getting rejected 100 days."

وا هەست دەکەم ١٠٠ ڕۆژ ڕەتکراومەتەوە،

And I came up with my own rejection ideas,

بیرۆکەی ڕەتکردنەوەی خۆم دۆزییەوە،

and I made a video blog out of it.

سایتی ئەلکتڕۆنی ڤیدیۆم دروست کرد.

And so here's what I did.

ئەوەبوو کە ئەنجامم دا.

This is what the blog looked like.

ئەوە سایتەکەیە بەم شێوەیە بوو.

Day One ...

ڕۆژی یەکەم ...

(Laughter)

Borrow 100 dollars from a stranger.

قەرزکردنی پارە بوو لە کەسێکی نامۆ.

So this is where I went to where I was working.

بۆیە چووم بۆ ئەو شوێنەی کارم لێێ دەکرد.

I came downstairs

بۆ قاتی خوارەوە چووم

and I saw this big guy sitting behind a desk.

پیاوێکی زلەم بینی لەپشت مێزێک دانیشتبوو.

He looked like a security guard.

لە پاسەوانێکی ترسناک بوو.

So I just approached him.

بۆیە بەرەو لای چووم.

And I was just walking

تەنها هەنگاوم دەنا

and that was the longest walk of my life --

ئەوە درێژترین هەنگاو بوو لە ژیانمدا --

hair on the back of my neck standing up,

مووی پشت ملم بەرزبووبوەوە،

I was sweating and my heart was pounding.

عارەقم کردبوو دڵم بەخێرایی لێی دەدا.

And I got there and said,

بەوێ گەیشتم و گوتم،

"Hey, sir, can I borrow 100 dollars from you?"

"سڵاو گەورەم، دەتوانم ۱۰۰ دۆلارت لێ قەرز بکەم؟"

(Laughter)

And he looked up, he's like, "No."

سەری بەرزکرد ، گوتی، "نا."

"Why?"

"بۆ؟"

And I just said, "No? I'm sorry."

گوتم، "نا؟ بمبوورە."

Then I turned around, and I just ran.

پاشان ڕووموەرگێڕاو بەپەلە ڕۆیشتم.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

I felt so embarrassed.

زۆر شەرمەزار بووم.

But because I filmed myself --

بەڵام چونکە خۆم فلمەکەم کرد --

so that night I was watching myself getting rejected,

ئەو شەوە سەیری خۆم دەکرد ڕەتکراومەتەوە،

I just saw how scared I was.

بینیم کە چەندە ترسابووم.

I looked like this kid in "The Sixth Sense."

بووم "the six sense" وەک ئەو منداڵەی فلمی

I saw dead people.

خەڵکی مردووم بینی.

(Laughter)

But then I saw this guy.

بەڵام دواتر ئەو پیاوەم بینی.

You know, he wasn't that menacing.

دەزانن، ترسێنەر نەبوو.

He was a chubby, loveable guy,

قەڵەو و خۆشەویست بوو،

and he even asked me, "Why?"

تەنانەت لێی پرسیم ، "بۆچی؟"

In fact, he invited me to explain myself.

لە ڕاستیدا بانگهێشتی کردبووم تا باسی خۆمی بۆ بکەم.

And I could've said many things.

دەمتوانی زۆر شت بڵێم.

I could've explained, I could've negotiated.

دەمتوانی ڕوونکردنەوە بکەم، گفتوگۆ بکەم.

I didn't do any of that.

هیچیانم نەکرد.

All I did was run.

هەموو ئەوەی کردم ڕاکردن بوو.

I felt, wow, this is like a microcosm of my life.

هەستم کرد، ئەوە شتێکی بچووکە لە ژیانمدا.

Every time I felt the slightest rejection,

هەموو کات هەستم بە ڕەتکردنەوەیەکی کەم دەکرد،

I would just run as fast as I could.

دەمەویست ئەوەندەی دەتوانم خێرا ڕابکەم.

And you know what?

دەزانن چی؟

The next day, no matter what happens,

گرنگ نەبوو ڕۆژی دواتر، چی ڕوودەدات،

I'm not going to run.

ڕاناکەم.

I'll stay engaged.

بەناچاری دەمێنمەوە.

ڕۆژی دووەم: داواکردنی هامبرگرێک بێ بەرامبەر.

Day Two: Request a "burger refill."

(Laughter)

It's when I went to a burger joint,

کاتێک بۆ ڕێستۆرانتێکی هامبرگر چووم،

I finished lunch, and I went to the cashier and said,

نانی نیوەڕۆم خوارد، چووم بۆ لای ژمێریارەکە و گوتم،

"سڵاو، دەتوانم هامبرگرێکی پڕکراو وەربگرم؟"

"Hi, can I get a burger refill?"

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

He was all confused, like, "What's a burger refill?"

تەواو شڵەژا بوو، گوتی" هامبرگری بێ بەرامبەر چییە؟"،

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

I said, "Well, it's just like a drink refill but with a burger."

گوتم، "وەکو خواردنەوەی بێ بەرامبەر بەڵام بە هامبرگرەوە."

And he said, "Sorry, we don't do burger refill, man."

گوتی "ببوورە، ئەی پیاو، هامبرگری وامان نییە."

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

So this is where rejection happened and I could have run, but I stayed.

لەوێ ڕەتکردنەوە ڕوویدا و دەمتوانی ڕابکەم، بەڵام مامەوە.

I said, "Well, I love your burgers,

گوتم، "باشە، هامبرگرەکەتم بە دڵە،

I love your joint,

ڕێستۆرانتەکەتم بە دڵە،

and if you guys do a burger refill,

ئەگەر هامبرگرەکەم بدەنێ،

I will love you guys more."

زیاتر خۆشم دەوێن."

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

And he said, "Well, OK, I'll tell my manager about it,

گوتی، "باشە، بە بەڕێوبەرەکەم دەڵێم،

and maybe we'll do it, but sorry, we can't do this today."

لەوانەیە ئەوە بکەین، بەڵام ببوورە، ئەمڕۆ ئەوە ناکەین."

Then I left.

پاشان ڕۆیشتم.

And by the way,

بەم بۆنەیەوە،

I don't think they've ever done burger refill.

پێم وانەبوو هیچ هامبرگرێکی بێ بەرامبەر هەبێت.

(Laughter)

I think they're still there.

پێم وایە هێشتا لەوێ ماون.

But the life and death feeling I was feeling the first time

بەڵام هەستی ژیان و مردن بوو یەکەم جار هەستم پێکرد لەوێ

was no longer there,

چیتر نەبوو،

just because I stayed engaged --

تەنها لەبەرئەوەی بە ناچاری مامەوە--

because I didn't run.

لەبەر ئەوەی ڕامنەکرد.

I said, "Wow, great, I'm already learning things.

گوتم، "نایابە، من ئیستا شت فێربووم.

Great."

نایابە."

And then Day Three: Getting Olympic Doughnuts.

دواتر ڕۆژی سێیەم: وەرگرتنی دۆگناتی ئۆڵۆمپی.

This is where my life was turned upside down.

لەوێوە ژیانم سەراو ژێر بوو.

I went to a Krispy Kreme.

بۆ کریپسی کریم چووم.

It's a doughnut shop

دووکانی دۆناتە

in mainly the Southeastern part of the United States.

بەزۆری لە بەشی باشووری ویلایەتە یەکگرتووەکان هەیە.

I'm sure they have some here, too.

لێرەش، دڵنیام هەندێک هەیە.

And I went in,

چوومە ژوورەوە،

I said, "Can you make me doughnuts that look like Olympic symbols?

گوتم،"دەتوانی دۆناتم بۆ دروست بکەیت وەکو هێمای ئۆڵۆمپی بێت؟

Basically, you interlink five doughnuts together ... "

بەزۆری، پێنج دۆنات بەیەکەوە دەلکێنیت ..."

I mean there's no way they could say yes, right?

مەبەستم نەدەکرا بڵێن بەڵێ، وایە؟

The doughnut maker took me so seriously.

دۆنات دروستکەرەکە بەڕاستی لێی وەرگرتم.

(Laughter)

So she put out paper,

بۆیە کاغەزێکی دەرهێنا،

started jotting down the colors and the rings,

بەپەلە دەستی کرد بە نووسینی ڕەنگ و بازنەکان،

and is like, "How can I make this?"

گوتی، "چۆن دروستی بکەم؟"

And then 15 minutes later,

،پاش ١٥ خولەک

she came out with a box that looked like Olympic rings.

هاتە دەرەوە بە سندوقێکەوە شێوەی وەکو بازنەکانی ئۆڵۆمپی وابوو.

And I was so touched.

زۆر کاری تێکردم.

I just couldn't believe it.

And that video got over five million views on Youtube.

The world couldn't believe that either.

You know, because of that I was in newspapers,

in talk shows, in everything.

And I became famous.

بەناوبانگ بووم.

A lot of people started writing emails to me

خەڵکێکی زۆر دەستیان بە ناردنی ئیمەیڵ کرد بۆم

and saying, "What you're doing is awesome."

دەیانگوت. "ئەوەی کە تۆ دەیکەیت سەرسوڕهێنەرە."

But you know, fame and notoriety did not do anything to me.

What I really wanted to do was learn,

and to change myself.

So I turned the rest of my 100 days of rejection

ڕۆژە ماوەکانی ١٠٠ ڕۆژی ڕەتکردنەوەم گۆڕی

into this playground --

بۆ ئەم یاریگایە --

into this research project.

بۆ ئەم پرۆژەی توێژینەوەیە.

I wanted to see what I could learn.

دەموەست بزانم توانیم چی فێرببم.

And then I learned a lot of things.

دواتر زۆر شت فێربووم.

I discovered so many secrets.

نهێنی زۆرم دۆزییەوە.

For example, I found if I just don't run,

بۆ نموونە، فێربووم گەر ڕانەکەم،

if I got rejected,

ئەگەر ڕەتکرامەوە،

I could actually turn a "no" into a "yes,"

لەڕاستیدا توانیم "نا" بگۆڕم بۆ "بەڵێ،"

and the magic word is, "why."

وشەی ئەفسوناوی، "بۆچی یە."

So one day I went to a stranger's house, I had this flower in my hand,

ڕۆژێک بۆ ماڵی بێگانەیەک چووم، گوڵێکم لەناودەستدا بوو،

knocked on the door and said,

لە دەرگەم دا و گوتم،

"Hey, can I plant this flower in your backyard?"

"سڵاو، دەتوانم ئەم گوڵە لەباخی ماڵەکەت بچێنم؟"

(Laughter)

And he said, "No."

"تۆ، دەتوانم بزانم بۆچی؟"

And he said, "Well, I have this dog

گوتی، "باشە، ئەم سەگەم هەیە

that would dig up anything I put in the backyard.

هەرشتێک بچێنم لەباخەکە هەڵیدەکەنێت.

I don't want to waste your flower.

نامەوێت گوڵەکەت بەفیڕۆ بچێت.

If you want to do this, go across the street and talk to Connie.

ئەگەر دەتەوێت ئەمە بکەیت، بڕۆ ئەوبەر شەقامەکە و لەگەل کۆنی قسە بکە.

She loves flowers."

So that's what I did.

بۆیە ئەوەم کرد.

I went across and knocked on Connie's door.

بۆ ئەوبەر چووم و لەدەرگەی ماڵی کۆنیم دا.

And she was so happy to see me.

زۆر دڵخۆش بوو کە منی بینی.

And then half an hour later,

دواتر پاش نیوکاتژمێر،

there was this flower in Connie's backyard.

ئەم گوڵە لە باخچەی پشت ماڵەکەی کۆنی بوو.

I'm sure it looks better now.

دڵنیام ئیستا جوانترە.

But had I left after the initial rejection,

بەڵام ئەگەر بمویستایە لەسەرەتاوە دوای ڕەتکردنەوە دەڕۆیشتم،

I would've thought,

بیرم کردەوە،

well, it's because the guy didn't trust me,

باشە، لەبەرئەوەی کوڕەکە متمانەی پێ نەکردم،

it's because I was crazy,

لەبەر ئەوەی شێت بووم،

because I didn't dress up well, I didn't look good.

لەبەر ئەوەی جلی جوانم نەپۆشیبوو، جوان دەرنەکەوتم.

It was none of those.

هیچکام لەمانە نەبوو.

It was because what I offered did not fit what he wanted.

لەبەرئەوەبوو داواکەی من نەدەگونجا لەگەل ویستی ئەو.

And he trusted me enough to offer me a referral,

بەڕادەیەک باوەڕی پێکردم کە ڕەوانەی کردم،

using a sales term.

بەبەکارهێنانی زاراوەیەکی فرۆشتن.

I converted a referral.

ئەوم ڕازیکرد کە منی بۆ نارد.

Then one day --

دواتر ڕۆژێک --

and I also learned that I can actually say certain things

فێربووم دەتوانم شتی باوەڕپێکراو بڵێم

and maximize my chance to get a yes.

دەرفەتم گەیاندە ئەوپەڕی تا بەڵی بەدەستبێنم..

So for example, one day I went to a Starbucks,

بۆ نموونە، ڕۆژێک بۆ ستاربەکس چووم،

and asked the manager, "Hey, can I be a Starbucks greeter?"

لە بەڕیوبەرەکەم پرسی، "سڵاو، دەتوانم ببمە پێشوازیکەری ستاربەکس؟"

He was like, "What's a Starbucks greeter?"

گوتی، "پێشوازیکەری ستاربەکس چییە؟"

I said, "Do you know those Walmart greeters?

گوتم، "ئەو پێشوازیکەرانەی واڵمارت دەناسی؟

You know, those people who say 'hi' to you before you walk in the store,

ئەوکەسانەن دەڵێن سڵاو پێش هاتنت بۆ ناو کۆگاکە،

and make sure you don't steal stuff, basically?

تا کەس دزی نەکات؟

I want to give a Walmart experience to Starbucks customers."

دەمەوێت تاقیکردنەوەی واڵمارت بە کڕیارەکان بدەم ."

Well, I'm not sure that's a good thing, actually --

باشە، لەڕاسیدا دڵنیا نیم شتێکی باشە --

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's a bad thing.

لەڕاستیدا، تا ڕادەیەک دڵنیام شتێكی خراپە.

And he was like, "Oh" --

وا دیاربوو، "کەیف خۆش" بێ --

yeah, this is how he looked, his name is Eric --

بەڵێ، بەم شێوەیە دەرکەوت، ناوی ئێیریکە --

and he was like, "I'm not sure."

وەک ئەوەبوو بڵی، "دڵنیانیم."

This is how he was hearing me. "Not sure."

ئەوەبوو چۆن منی فێرکرد، "دڵنیانیم."

Then I ask him, "Is that weird?"

دواتر لێم پرسی، "ئایا نامۆیە؟"

He's like, "Yeah, it's really weird, man."

گوتی، "بەڵێ، بەڕاستی نامۆیە، پیاو."

But as soon as he said that, his whole demeanor changed.

بەڵام تەنها بە گوتنی ئەمە هەڵسوکەوتی تەواو گۆڕا.

It's as if he's putting all the doubt on the floor.

وەک ئەوەی هەموو گومانەکانی لەئەرزەکە دانابێ.

And he said, "Yeah, you can do this,

گوتی، "بەڵێ، دەتوانی ئەوە بکەیت،

just don't get too weird."

تەنها زۆر نامۆ مەبە."

So for the next hour I was the Starbucks greeter.

بۆیە کاتژمێری دواتر سڵاوکەری ستاربەکس بووم.

I said "hi" to every customer that walked in,

لە هەرکەسێک دەهاتە ژوورەوە "سڵاو"م دەکرد.

and gave them holiday cheers.

خۆشی ڕۆژی پشووم پێیان دەدا.

By the way, I don't know what your career trajectory is,

بەم بۆنەیەوە، نازانم ڕێبازی کارەکەتان چییە،

don't be a greeter.

مەبن بە سڵاوکەر.

It was really boring.

بەڕاستی بێزارکەربوو.

But then I found I could do this because I mentioned, "Is that weird?"

بەڵام دواتر بۆمدەرکەوت توانیم ئەوە بکەم چونکە باسم کرد، "ئایا نامۆیە؟"

I mentioned the doubt that he was having.

باسی ئەو گومانانەم کرد کە هەیبوو.

And because I mentioned, "Is that weird?", that means I wasn't weird.

چونکە باسم کرد، "ئایا نامۆیە؟"، ئەوە واتا من نامۆ نەبووم.

That means I was actually thinking just like him,

لەڕاستیدا واتا وەکو ئەو بیرم دەکردەوە،

seeing this as a weird thing.

وەکو شتێکی نامۆ دەبینرا.

And again, and again,

دووبارە و دووبارە،

I learned that if I mention some doubt people might have

فێربووم ئەو گومانانەی کە لەوانەیە خەڵک هەیانبێ باسبکەم

before I ask the question,

پێش ئەوەی پرسیار بکەم،

I gained their trust.

متمانەیان بەدەست بهێنم.

People were more likely to say yes to me.

ئەگەری زیاترە خەڵک پێم بڵێن بەڵێ.

And then I learned I could fulfill my life dream ...

دواتر فێربووم دەتوانم خەونی ژیانی خۆم بەدیبهێنم...

by asking.

بە پرسیارکردن.

You know, I came from four generations of teachers,

لەچوار نەوەی مامۆستا هاتم،

and my grandma has always told me,

داپیرەم هەمیشە پێی دەگوتم،

"Hey Jia, you can do anything you want,

"تۆ جای، دەتوانیت هەرشتێک کە دەتەوێت بیکەیت،

but it'd be great if you became a teacher."

بەڵام شتێکی نایابە ئەگەر ببیت بە مامۆستا."

But I wanted to be an entrepreneur, so I didn't.

دەمەویست ببم بە بەڕێوەبەر ،بۆیە نەبووم بە مامۆستا.

But it has always been my dream to actually teach something.

بەڵام لەڕاستیدا هەمیشە خەونی من بووە وانە لە شتێکدا بڵێمەوە.

بۆیە گوتم، "چی ئەبێ ئەگەر تەنها پرسیار بکەم

So I said, "What if I just ask

and teach a college class?"

لە پۆلێکی زانکۆ وانە بڵێمەوە؟"

I lived in Austin at the time,

ئەوکات لە ئۆستن دەژیام،

so I went to University of Texas at Austin

بۆیە لە ئۆستن بۆ کۆلێژی تێکساس چووم

and knocked on professors' doors and said, "Can I teach your class?"

لەدەرگەی مامۆستاکەم دا و گوتم، "دەتوانم لە پۆلەکەت وانە بڵێمەوە؟"

I didn't get anywhere the first couple of times.

دووجاری یەکەم هیچ شوێنێکم دەست نەکەوت.

But because I didn't run -- I kept doing it --

بەڵام ڕامنەکرد -- بەردەوام بووم --

and on the third try the professor was very impressed.

لە هەوڵی سێیەمدا، پڕۆفیسۆرەکە زۆر سەرسام بوو.

He was like, "No one has done this before."

گوتی، "پێشتر کەس ئەمەی نەکردووە."

And I came in prepared with powerpoints and my lesson.

بۆ ژوورەوە چووم وانەکەم ئامادەکردبوو.

He said, "Wow, I can use this.

گوتی، بەڵێ، دەتوانم ئەوە بەکاربێنم.

Why don't you come back in two months? I'll fit you in my curriculum."

بۆچی دوومانگی تر نایەیتەوە؟ بەرنامەی وانەگوتنەوەت ڕێکدەخەم."

And two months later I was teaching a class.

پاش دوومانگ لە پۆلێک وانەم وتەوە.

This is me -- you probably can't see, this is a bad picture.

ئەوە منم -- لەوانەیە نەتوانن بمبینن، ئەوە وێنەیەکی خراپە.

You know, sometimes you get rejected by lighting, you know?

دەزانن هەندێک جار ڕەتدەکرێنەوە لەلایەن ڕووناکییەوە؟،

But wow --

بەڵام سەرسوڕهێنەوە--

when I finished teaching that class, I walked out crying,

کاتێک وانەوتنەوەی پۆلەکەم تەواوکرد، بۆ دەرەوە چووم گریام،

because I thought

چونکە پێم وابوو

I could fulfill my life dream just by simply asking.

دەتوانم خەونەکانم بەدیبهێنم تەنها بە پرسیاری سادە.

I used to think I have to accomplish all these things --

ڕاهاتم بیربکەمەوە کە پێویستە هەموو ئەو شتانە بێنمەدی --

have to be a great entrepreneur, or get a PhD to teach --

پێویستە ببم بە خاوەنکاری گەورە، یاخود دکتۆرا بێنم لە فێرکردن--

but no, I just asked,

بەڵام نا، تەنها پرسیارم کرد،

and I could teach.

توانیم وانەبڵێمەوە.

And in that picture, which you can't see,

لەم وێنەیەدا، کە ناتوانیت بیبینیت،

I quoted Martin Luther King, Jr.

وتەی مارتین لوسەر کینگی بچووکم دووبارە کردەوە.

Why? Because in my research I found that people who really change the world,

بۆ؟ چونکە لە گەڕانمدا ئەو کەسانەم دۆزیەوە کە بەڕاستی جیهانیان گۆڕی،

who change the way we live and the way we think,

ئەو کەسانەی شێوازی ژیان و بیرکردنەوەمانیان گۆڕی،

are the people who were met with initial and often violent rejections.

ئەو کەسانەی لەسەرەتادا ڕووبەڕوی ڕەتکردنەوەی توند بوونەوە.

People like Martin Luther King, Jr.,

کەسی وەکو مارتن لوزەر کینگی بچووک.،

like Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela,

وەکو ماهاتما غاندی، نێڵسن ماندێلا،

or even Jesus Christ.

یان تەتانەت مەسیح.

These people did not let rejection define them.

ئەو کەسانە ڕێگەیان نەدا ڕەتکردنەوە پێناسەیان بکات.

They let their own reaction after rejection define themselves.

ڕێیاندا کاردانەوەی خۆیان لەدوای ڕەتکردنەوە خۆیان پێناسە بکات.

And they embraced rejection.

قایل بوون بە ڕەتکردنەوە.

And we don't have to be those people to learn about rejection,

ئێمە پێویست ناکات ئەو کەسانە بین تا فێری ڕەتکردنەوە ببین،

and in my case,

لە بارودۆخی مندا،

rejection was my curse,

ڕەتکردنەوە نەفرەتلێکردنی من بوو،

was my boogeyman.

دێوەزمەی من بوو.

It has bothered me my whole life because I was running away from it.

ژیانمی تەواو بێزار کردبوو، چونکە لێی ڕامدەکرد.

Then I started embracing it.

پاشان پێێ قایل بووم.

I turned that into the biggest gift in my life.

گۆڕیم بۆ گەورەترین دیاری لە ژیانمدا.

I started teaching people how to turn rejections into opportunities.

دەستم کرد بە فێرکردنی خەڵک کە چۆن ڕەتکردنەوە بۆ دەرفەت بگۆڕن.

I use my blog, I use my talk,

بلۆگەکەم بەکارهێنا، قسەکانم بەکارهێنا،

I use the book I just published,

ئەو پەرتووکەم بەکارهێنا کە بڵاومکردەوە،

and I'm even building technology to help people overcome their fear of rejection.

تەنانەت تەکنۆلۆژیام دروستکرد بۆ هاوکاری خەڵکی تا زاڵبن بەسەر ترسی ڕەتکردنەوەدا.

When you get rejected in life,

کاتێک ڕەتکرایتەوە لە ژیانتدا،

when you are facing the next obstacle

کاتێک کۆسپێکی تر ڕووبەڕوت دەبێتەوە

or next failure,

یان شکستێکی تر.

consider the possibilities.

ئەگەرەکان ڕەچاو بکەن.

Don't run.

ڕامەکەن.

If you just embrace them,

ئەگەر تەنها ڕازیبن پێیان،

they might become your gifts as well.

لەوانەیە ببن بە دیاری ئێوەش.
