When I was six years old,

I received my gifts.

What a wonderful idea, right?

What could go wrong?

Well, there were 40 of us to start with,

일단 학생이 40명이었습니다.

and every time I heard someone's name called,

매번 누군가가 칭찬을 받을 때마다

I would give out the heartiest cheer.

저는 진심으로 축하해줬습니다.

And then there were 20 people left,

그리고 20명이 남아있었고

and 10 people left,

10명

and five left ...

다섯 명

and three left.

마지막에는 세 명이 남았습니다.

And I was one of them.

제가 거기 있었습니다.

And the compliments stopped.

Well, at that moment, I was crying.

And the teacher was freaking out.

Well, as I'm describing this you,

you probably know I remember this really well.

제가 아주 생생하게 그 때를 기억하고 있음을 아시겠죠.

But I don't know who felt worse that day.

하지만 그날 누가 더 기분이 나빴는지는 모르겠네요.

Was it me or the teacher?

저였을까요 아니면 선생님이었을까요?

She must have realized that she turned a team-building event

그날 선생님은 아마 6살 짜리 아이들의 협력활동을

into a public roast for three six-year-olds.

공개 비판의 자리로 만들었음을 깨달았을 겁니다.

And without the humor.

유머없는 공개 비판이었고요.

You know, when you see people get roasted on TV,

TV에서 누군가가 혹평이나 비판을 받는 것을 보면

it was funny.

재미있습니다.

There was nothing funny about that day.

하지만 그날은 절대 재미있지 않았습니다.

So that was one version of me,

and I would die to avoid being in that situation again --

그런 상황에는 다시 있고 싶지 않습니다.

to get rejected in public again.

공개적으로 거절당하는 거 말이죠.

That's one version.

그 당시 저였고요.

Then fast-forward eight years.

시간을 당겨 8년 후입니다.

Bill Gates came to my hometown --

제 고향에 빌 게이츠가 왔었습니다.

Beijing, China --

중국 베이징에요.

to speak,

연설을 하러 왔었는데

and I saw his message.

그가 하는 말을 듣고

I fell in love with that guy.

한 눈에 반해버렸습니다.

I thought, wow, I know what I want to do now.

'내가 이제 뭘 할지 알았어'라고 생각했죠.

That night I wrote a letter to my family

그날 밤, 저의 가족에게 편지를 썼습니다.

편지에는 "저는 25살이 되었을 때

telling them: "By age 25,

I will build the biggest company in the world,

세계에서 가장 큰 회사를 만들 거예요.

그리고 그 회사로 마이크로소프트사를 살 거예요."

and that company will buy Microsoft."

I totally embraced this idea of conquering the world --

세계 정복의 개념을 그대로 받아들인 거죠.

domination, right?

지배, 맞죠?

And I didn't make this up, I did write that letter.

Well, then two years later,

2년 후에

I was presented with the opportunity to come to the United States.

미국에 갈 기회가 생겼습니다.

I jumped on it,

because that was where Bill Gates lived, right?

왜냐면 빌 게이츠가 사는 나라니까요.

I thought that was the start of my entrepreneur journey.

저는 그것이 제 사업 여정의 시작이라고 생각했습니다.

Then, fast-forward another 14 years.

I was 30.

Nope, I didn't build that company.

I didn't even start.

I was actually a marketing manager for a Fortune 500 company.

And I felt I was stuck;

I was stagnant.

침체 상태에 빠져있었죠.

Why is that?

어째서 그럴까요?

Where is that 14-year-old who wrote that letter?

저 편지를 쓴 14살 짜리 소년은 어디로 가버린 걸까요?

It's not because he didn't try.

노력하지 않아서는 아니었습니다.

It's because every time I had a new idea,

새로운 아이디어가 있을 때마다

every time I wanted to try something new,

뭔가 새로운 것을 시도해보고 싶을 때마다

even at work --

직장에서도 마찬가지로

I wanted to make a proposal,

제안을 하나 하고 싶어도

I wanted to speak up in front of people in a group --

사람들 앞에서 말을 하려고 할 때마다

I felt there was this constant battle

제 안에는 끊임없는 내면의 갈등이 있었던 겁니다.

between the 14-year-old and the six-year-old.

14살과 6살 짜리의 갈등 말입니다.

One wanted to conquer the world --

한쪽은 세계를 정복하고 변화를 만들어내고 싶어했고

make a difference --

another was afraid of rejection.

다른 한면은 거절에 대한 두려움이 있었습니다.

And every time that six-year-old won.

그리고 매번 6살 짜리가 이겼죠.

And this fear even persisted after I started my own company.

이 두려움은 제가 회사를 만든 후에도 계속 존재했습니다.

I mean, I started my own company when I was 30 --

서른 살때 회사를 설립했거든요.

if you want to be Bill Gates,

빌 게이츠처럼 되고 싶다면 곧 시작해야하는 거잖아요?

you've got to start sooner or later, right?

사업가가 된 후에

When I was an entrepreneur,

I was presented with an investment opportunity,

투자를 받을 수 있는 기회가 있었는데

and then I was turned down.

거절당하고 말았습니다.

And that rejection hurt me.

너무 고통스러웠습니다.

It hurt me so bad that I wanted to quit right there.

너무 힘들어 그 자리에서 다 포기하고 싶었습니다.

But then I thought,

하지만 생각했죠.

hey, would Bill Gates quit after a simple investment rejection?

빌 게이츠라면 투자를 거절당했다고 포기할까?

Would any successful entrepreneur quit like that?

성공한 기업가 중에 이런 식으로 포기하는 사람이 있을까?

No way.

절대 아니지.

And this is where it clicked for me.

그 때 깨달았습니다.

OK, I can build a better company.

더 좋은 회사를 만들 수 있고

I can build a better team or better product,

더 좋은 팀 혹은 더 나은 제품을 만들 수 있어.

but one thing for sure:

하지만 한 가지 분명한 것은

I've got to be a better leader.

내가 더 좋은 리더가 되어야 한다는 거야.

I've got to be a better person.

내가 더 나은 사람이 되어야 해.

I cannot let that six-year-old keep dictating my life anymore.

더 이상 그 여섯살 짜리에게 내 인생을 맡길 수는 없어.

I have to put him back in his place.

그 꼬마는 자신의 자리로 돌려보내야 해.

So this is where I went online and looked for help.

그리고 인터넷을 뒤지기 시작했습니다.

Google was my friend.

I searched, "How do I overcome the fear of rejection?"

I came up with a bunch of psychology articles

심리학으로 설명하려는 글도 있었습니다.

about where the fear and pain are coming from.

두려움과 고통이 어디서 오는지 설명하고

Then I came up with a bunch of "rah-rah" inspirational articles

"이러쿵 저러쿵" 영감을 주는 글들도 있었죠.

about "Don't take it personally, just overcome it."

"개인적으로 받아들이지 말고 극복하세요"라고 하더군요.

Who doesn't know that?

누가 그걸 모르나요?

But why was I still so scared?

알고 있으면서 왜 저는 계속 두려워하는 걸까요?

Then I found this website by luck.

그 때, 운좋게 이 웹사이트를 발견했습니다.

It's called rejectiontherapy.com.

거부치료닷컴 (rejectiontheraphy.com)입니다.

(Laughter)

"Rejection Therapy" was this game invented by this Canadian entrepreneur.

"거부치료"란 캐나다 기업가가 발명한 게임인데요.

His name is Jason Comely.

기업가는 제이슨 콤리입니다.

And basically the idea is for 30 days you go out and look for rejection,

기본적으로 30일 동안 밖에 나가 거부를 당해보는 겁니다.

and every day get rejected at something,

매일 무언가에 대해 거절을 당해보라는 거죠.

and then by the end, you desensitize yourself from the pain.

그리고 끝날 때 쯤이면, 고통에 대해 둔감해진다는 겁니다.

And I loved that idea.

너무 마음에 들었습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I said, "You know what? I'm going to do this.

"좋아, 나도 해봐야겠어" 라고 생각했습니다.

And I'll feel myself getting rejected 100 days."

" 100일 동안 거절 당하는 내 자신을 느껴보겠어."

And I came up with my own rejection ideas,

그리고 저만의 거절당할 항목을 생각해 냈죠.

and I made a video blog out of it.

그리고 비디오 블로그도 만들었습니다.

And so here's what I did.

Day One ...

첫째 날은

Borrow 100 dollars from a stranger.

낯선 사람으로부터 100달러 빌리기.

So this is where I went to where I was working.

제가 일하는 있는 곳에서

I came downstairs

아래층으로 내려갔습니다.

and I saw this big guy sitting behind a desk.

거기에는 큰 책상 뒤에 앉아있는 덩치 큰 남자가 있었습니다.

He looked like a security guard.

보안 경비원 같아 보였어요.

So I just approached him.

그에게 다가갔습니다.

And I was just walking

그저 걷고만 있었지만

and that was the longest walk of my life --

제 인생에서 가장 긴 시간이었습니다.

hair on the back of my neck standing up,

뒷머리가 일어섰고

식은땀이 나고 심장이 쿵쾅거리고 있었습니다

I was sweating and my heart was pounding.

And I got there and said,

그 앞에 도착했습니다

"Hey, sir, can I borrow 100 dollars from you?"

"실례지만 100달러만 빌릴 수 있을까요?"

(Laughter)

And he looked up, he's like, "No."

저를 쳐다보더니 "안돼요.

"Why?"

무슨 일이신데요?" 라고 묻더군요

And I just said, "No? I'm sorry."

전 " 네. 죄송합니다"라고 하고

Then I turned around, and I just ran.

뒤돌아서서 달렸습니다.

(Laughter)

I felt so embarrassed.

너무 창피했습니다

But because I filmed myself --

하지만 영상을 찍고 있었기 때문에

so that night I was watching myself getting rejected,

그날 밤 저는 거절당하는 제 모습을 볼 수 있었습니다.

I just saw how scared I was.

제가 얼마나 두려워하고 있는지 봤습니다.

I looked like this kid in "The Sixth Sense."

식스센스에 나오는 주인공 소년 같아보였습니다.

I saw dead people.

귀신을 본 것 같았어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But then I saw this guy.

그때 그 남자를 봤습니다

You know, he wasn't that menacing.

그는 그렇게 위협적이진 않았어요.

He was a chubby, loveable guy,

통통하고 귀여운 사람이었죠.

and he even asked me, "Why?"

저에게 무슨 일이냐고까지 물어봤죠.

In fact, he invited me to explain myself.

제 사정을 듣고 싶어했어요.

And I could've said many things.

저는 많은 이야기할 수 있었어요.

I could've explained, I could've negotiated.

상황을 설명을 할수도 있었고, 협상을 할 수도 있었지만

I didn't do any of that.

전 아무것도 하지 않았죠

All I did was run.

그저 도망만 쳤습니다

I felt, wow, this is like a microcosm of my life.

너무 신기한게 제 인생 축소판을 보는 것 같았어요.

Every time I felt the slightest rejection,

매번 거절의 가능성이 조금이라도 보이면

I would just run as fast as I could.

저는 도망치기에 바빴습니다.

And you know what?

그리고 아세요?

The next day, no matter what happens,

다음 날에는 무슨 일이 있어도

I'm not going to run.

도망치지 않기로 했습니다.

I'll stay engaged.

계속 남아 버티기로 했습니다.

Day Two: Request a "burger refill."

둘째날: "햄버거 리필하기"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

It's when I went to a burger joint,

햄버거 체인점에 들어갔습니다.

I finished lunch, and I went to the cashier and said,

다 먹고나서 주문대에 가서 물어봤습니다.

"여기, 햄버거 리필 될까요?"

"Hi, can I get a burger refill?"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

He was all confused, like, "What's a burger refill?"

점원은 좀 혼란스러운듯이 햄버거 리필이 뭐냐고 물었습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I said, "Well, it's just like a drink refill but with a burger."

"음료 리필 같은 건데 햄버거로 해주는 거죠"라고 하니까

And he said, "Sorry, we don't do burger refill, man."

"죄송한데 햄버거 리필은 안됩니다"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So this is where rejection happened and I could have run, but I stayed.

이 쯤에서 저는 전처럼 도망칠 수 있었으나 도망치지 않았습니다.

I said, "Well, I love your burgers,

대신 저는 "난 여기 햄버거도 좋아하고

I love your joint,

이 체인도 좋아하는데

and if you guys do a burger refill,

리필을 해준다면

I will love you guys more."

완전 팬이 될수 있는데" 라고 했습니다.

(Laughter)

And he said, "Well, OK, I'll tell my manager about it,

"그럼 매니저에게 말해 볼게요.

and maybe we'll do it, but sorry, we can't do this today."

어쩌면 할 수도 있지만 오늘은 안돼요"

Then I left.

그리고 나왔습니다.

And by the way,

I don't think they've ever done burger refill.

그 사람들 버거리필 한 적이 없을 겁니다.

I think they're still there.

그 체인점은 아직 거기에 있지만요.

But the life and death feeling I was feeling the first time

하지만 제가 첫날 느꼈던 죽을 것 같은 느낌은

was no longer there,

just because I stayed engaged --

because I didn't run.

And then Day Three: Getting Olympic Doughnuts.

This is where my life was turned upside down.

이날 제 인생이 바뀐 날입니다.

I went to a Krispy Kreme.

크리스피 크림 도넛 가게에 갔죠.

It's a doughnut shop

도넛 가게인데

미국 남동부에 많이 있어요.

in mainly the Southeastern part of the United States.

I'm sure they have some here, too.

여기에서 아마 있을 거예요.

And I went in,

가게 안으로 들어갔습니다.

I said, "Can you make me doughnuts that look like Olympic symbols?

"올림픽 오륜마크처럼 생긴 도너츠를 만들어 주실 수 있나요?

Basically, you interlink five doughnuts together ... "

도넛 다섯 개를 서로 연결시키면 되는 건데요.."

I mean there's no way they could say yes, right?

해줄 리가 없을 것 같죠?

The doughnut maker took me so seriously.

하지만 그 사람은 제 말을 굉장히 진지하게 생각했습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So she put out paper,

종이를 꺼내서

started jotting down the colors and the rings,

색깔과 원을 그리기 시작하더라고요.

and is like, "How can I make this?"

"이걸 어떻게 만들지?" 하면서 고민하더니

And then 15 minutes later,

15분 후에

she came out with a box that looked like Olympic rings.

올림픽 마크가 들어있는 커다란 상자를 들고 나왔습니다.

And I was so touched.

감동적이었습니다.

I just couldn't believe it.

믿을 수가 없었죠.

And that video got over five million views on Youtube.

그 영상은 유튜브 조회수가 500만입니다.

The world couldn't believe that either.

세계인들도 믿기 힘들었나 봅니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

You know, because of that I was in newspapers,

이 사건으로 신문에도 나오고

in talk shows, in everything.

토크쇼 등 여러 매체에도 나왔습니다.

And I became famous.

유명인이 되었습니다.

A lot of people started writing emails to me

많은 사람들이 제게 이메일을 쓰기 시작했습니다.

and saying, "What you're doing is awesome."

"당신이 하고 있는 일은 너무 멋져요"라면서요.

But you know, fame and notoriety did not do anything to me.

하지만 유명세는 제게 아무런 의미가 없었습니다.

What I really wanted to do was learn,

제가 정말로 원한 것은 배움과

and to change myself.

So I turned the rest of my 100 days of rejection

그래서 남은 100일의 거절을

into this playground --

거대한 연구 프로젝트 공간으로 만들었습니다.

into this research project.

I wanted to see what I could learn.

내가 무엇을 배울 수 있는지 알고 싶었습니다.

And then I learned a lot of things.

많은 것을 배웠습니다.

I discovered so many secrets.

수 많은 비밀도 발견했고요.

For example, I found if I just don't run,

예를 들어, 제가 물러서지 않는다면

if I got rejected,

거절 당해도

I could actually turn a "no" into a "yes,"

and the magic word is, "why."

So one day I went to a stranger's house, I had this flower in my hand,

knocked on the door and said,

"Hey, can I plant this flower in your backyard?"

And he said, "No."

But before he could leave I said,

"Hey, can I know why?"

And he said, "Well, I have this dog

that would dig up anything I put in the backyard.

I don't want to waste your flower.

So that's what I did.

I went across and knocked on Connie's door.

And she was so happy to see me.

And then half an hour later,

there was this flower in Connie's backyard.

I'm sure it looks better now.

But had I left after the initial rejection,

I would've thought,

well, it's because the guy didn't trust me,

it's because I was crazy,

내가 미쳤던 거지.

because I didn't dress up well, I didn't look good.

옷을 제대로 입지 않거나 너무 못 생겨서 그런 거야.

이런 이유들 때문에 거절한게 아니였습니다.

It was none of those.

It was because what I offered did not fit what he wanted.

제가 제공하는 것이 그 사람에게 맞지 않았기 때문이었죠.

And he trusted me enough to offer me a referral,

실은 그분은 저에게 앞집을 추천해 줄 만큼 절 믿었습니다.

using a sales term.

판매용어를 사용하자면 그런 거죠.

I converted a referral.

거절을 추천으로 바꾼 겁니다.

Then one day --

그리고 어느 날은

and I also learned that I can actually say certain things

제가 어떻게 말하느냐에 따라

and maximize my chance to get a yes.

긍정적 답변을 받을 가능성을 높일 수 있다는 것도 배웠습니다.

So for example, one day I went to a Starbucks,

예를 들어, 하루는 스타벅스에 가서

and asked the manager, "Hey, can I be a Starbucks greeter?"

매니저에게 물었습니다. "스타벅스 접대원을 해도 될까요?"

He was like, "What's a Starbucks greeter?"

매니저는 "스타벅스 접대원이 대체 뭔가요?" 되물었죠.

I said, "Do you know those Walmart greeters?

"월마트 같은 곳에 손님에게 인사하는 접대원 아시죠?

You know, those people who say 'hi' to you before you walk in the store,

점포에 들어가기 전에 '어서오세요'라고 인사하는 사람들 있잖아요.

and make sure you don't steal stuff, basically?

그리고 물건을 훔지는지 보기도 하는 사람들 말이에요.

I want to give a Walmart experience to Starbucks customers."

Well, I'm not sure that's a good thing, actually --

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's a bad thing.

사실 안 좋은 거라고 생각해요.

And he was like, "Oh" --

매니저는 머뭇거렸습니다.

yeah, this is how he looked, his name is Eric --

이렇게 생긴 분인데 이름이 에릭이에요.

and he was like, "I'm not sure."

"잘 모르겠네요," 라고 말했죠.

"잘 모르겠다."는 반응을 보인 거죠.

This is how he was hearing me. "Not sure."

Then I ask him, "Is that weird?"

그래서 제가 물었죠. "좀 이상한가요?"

He's like, "Yeah, it's really weird, man."

그는 "네, 정말 이상하네요." 라고 말했어요.

But as soon as he said that, his whole demeanor changed.

하지만 그가 그 말을 하는 순간

It's as if he's putting all the doubt on the floor.

And he said, "Yeah, you can do this,

just don't get too weird."

So for the next hour I was the Starbucks greeter.

I said "hi" to every customer that walked in,

and gave them holiday cheers.

휴일 인사도 했습니다.

By the way, I don't know what your career trajectory is,

여러분의 직업 계획이 어떻게 되는지 모르지만

don't be a greeter.

접대원은 하지 마세요.

너무 지루했거든요.

It was really boring.

But then I found I could do this because I mentioned, "Is that weird?"

하지만 "그게 좀 이상한가요?"라고 제가 물었기 때문에 할 수 있었던 겁니다.

I mentioned the doubt that he was having.

그가 불확실해 하는 걸 제가 얘기했죠.

And because I mentioned, "Is that weird?", that means I wasn't weird.

"그게 이상한가요?"라는 했기 때문에 제가 이상한 사람은 아닌 겁니다.

That means I was actually thinking just like him,

이것은 결국 저도 그와 마찬가지로 같은 생각을 하고

seeing this as a weird thing.

이 일을 이상하게 본 거죠.

And again, and again,

그리고 계속해서

I learned that if I mention some doubt people might have

상대방이 가진 의문점을 제가 언급을 한 후에

before I ask the question,

질문이나 요청을 하면

I gained their trust.

그 상대방의 신뢰를 얻게 됨을 알게되었습니다.

People were more likely to say yes to me.

저에게 긍정적으로 대답할 가능성이 높아지는 겁니다.

And then I learned I could fulfill my life dream ...

그리고 꿈을 이룰 수 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

by asking.

묻기만 하면 되는 거였습니다.

You know, I came from four generations of teachers,

저희 집은 4대가 교육자 집안입니다.

and my grandma has always told me,

제 할머니는 항상 저에게

"Hey Jia, you can do anything you want,

"지아. 넌 네가 원하는 것은 뭐든 될 수 있단다.

but it'd be great if you became a teacher."

그런데 네가 선생님이 되면 너무 좋을 것 같구나."

(Laughter)

But I wanted to be an entrepreneur, so I didn't.

하지만 전 사업가가 되고 싶어 교사는 하지 않았죠.

But it has always been my dream to actually teach something.

하지만 무언가를 가르치고 싶은 꿈은 항상 가지고 있었습니다.

So I said, "What if I just ask

"대학 강의를 하도록 물어 보면 어떨까?" 라고 생각했습니다.

and teach a college class?"

I lived in Austin at the time,

그 당시 텍사스 오스틴에 살고 있었습니다.

so I went to University of Texas at Austin

그래서 오스틴에 있는 텍사스대를 찾아 가서

and knocked on professors' doors and said, "Can I teach your class?"

교수님들을 찾아가 "제가 수업을 가르쳐봐도 될까요?" 물었습니다.

I didn't get anywhere the first couple of times.

처음에 아무런 반응이 없었습니다.

But because I didn't run -- I kept doing it --

하지만 제가 도망치지 않고 계속 시도했기에

and on the third try the professor was very impressed.

세 번째쯤 되었을때 교수님이 저를 인상깊게 보기 시작했습니다.

He was like, "No one has done this before."

"이런 걸 시도해 본 사람이 아무도 없었습니다."

And I came in prepared with powerpoints and my lesson.

파워포인트와 수업내용을 다 준비해서 갔습니다.

He said, "Wow, I can use this.

교수님은 "대단해요. 내 수업에 써도 되겠어요.

Why don't you come back in two months? I'll fit you in my curriculum."

두 달 후에 다시 오세요. 커리큘럼에 시간을 넣어 드릴게요.

And two months later I was teaching a class.

그리고 두 달 후 저는 수업을 하고 있었습니다.

This is me -- you probably can't see, this is a bad picture.

이게 접니다. 아마 제가 잘 안보일 거예요. 사진이 잘 안나왔거든요.

You know, sometimes you get rejected by lighting, you know?

아시죠? 살다보면 조명에게 거절당할 수도 있습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But wow --

하지만

when I finished teaching that class, I walked out crying,

수업을 마치고 나올 때, 저는 울면서 나왔습니다.

because I thought

왜냐면 저는

I could fulfill my life dream just by simply asking.

그저 요청하는 것만으로도 제 꿈을 이룰 수 있구나 생각했으니까요.

I used to think I have to accomplish all these things --

성공하기 위해서는 많은 것을 해야한다고 생각하곤 했습니다.

have to be a great entrepreneur, or get a PhD to teach --

성공한 사업가가 되어야하고, 가르치기 위해 박사 학위를 받아야하고

but no, I just asked,

하지만 아니었어요. 그저 부탁했을 뿐인데

and I could teach.

가르칠 수 있었습니다.

And in that picture, which you can't see,

그리고 우리가 볼 수 없는 큰 그림에는

I quoted Martin Luther King, Jr.

마틴 루터의 말을 인용했습니다.

Why? Because in my research I found that people who really change the world,

왜냐고요? 제가 조사한 바에 의하면 세상을 변화시키는 사람들

who change the way we live and the way we think,

우리 삶의 방식을 바꾸고 우리의 생각을 바꾸는 사람들은

are the people who were met with initial and often violent rejections.

초반에 격한 거부를 겪어본 사람들이었기 때문입니다.

People like Martin Luther King, Jr.,

마틴 루터 킹이 그 경우입니다.

like Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela,

마하트마 간디와 넬슨 만델라도 있고

or even Jesus Christ.

예수 그리스도도 포함됩니다.

These people did not let rejection define them.

이 사람들은 거절에 의해 규정되지 않았습니다.

They let their own reaction after rejection define themselves.

거절 이후에 나타낸 반응이 그들을 규정했습니다.

And they embraced rejection.

이들은 거절을 받아들였습니다.

And we don't have to be those people to learn about rejection,

거절을 알자고 이 사람들이 될 필요는 없습니다.

and in my case,

저의 경우에는

rejection was my curse,

거절이 저의 저주이자

was my boogeyman.

두려움의 대상이었고

It has bothered me my whole life because I was running away from it.

이것에서 도망치고 있었기 때문에 제 평생 동안 저를 괴롭혔습니다.

Then I started embracing it.

그 다음부터 저는 거절을 받아들이기 시작했습니다.

I turned that into the biggest gift in my life.

거절을 제 인생 최고의 선물로 변화시켰습니다.

I started teaching people how to turn rejections into opportunities.

사람들에게 거절을 기회로 만드는 법을 알려주기 시작했습니다.

I use my blog, I use my talk,

제 블로그 혹은 강연을 통해

I use the book I just published,

혹은 제가 쓴 책을 통해서

and I'm even building technology to help people overcome their fear of rejection.

거절의 두려움을 극복할 수 있도록 돕는 기술도 만들고 있습니다.

When you get rejected in life,

살면서 거절을 당하거나

when you are facing the next obstacle

인생의 장애물

or next failure,

혹은 실패를 겪었을 때

consider the possibilities.

다양한 가능성들을 고려해보세요.

Don't run.

도망치지 마세요.

If you just embrace them,

그 어려움들을 받아들이면

they might become your gifts as well.
