I want to tell you a story about a girl.

မိန်းကလေးတစ်ဦးရဲ့ ဇာတ်လမ်းကို ပြောပြချင်ပါတယ်။

But I can't tell you her real name.

သူမရဲ့ အမည်ရင်းကိုတော့ မပြောနိုင်ပါဘူး။

So let's just call her Hadiza.

Hadiza is 20.

She's shy,

Do you want to know why?

ဘာကြောင့် ရှင်တို့ သိချင်ကြလား။

Hadiza is a Chibok girl,

Hadiza ဟာ Chibok က မ်န်းကလေးဖြစ်ပြီး

and on April 14, 2014, she was kidnapped

၂၀၁၄ ဧပြီလ ၁၄ ရက်မှာ Boko Haram အကြမ်းဖက်သမားတွေရဲ့

by Boko Haram terrorists.

ပြန်ပေးဆွဲတာ ခံခဲ့ရတယ်။

She managed to escape, though,

ဒါပေမဲ့လည်း မိန်းကလေးတွေကို တင်လာတဲ့ ကုန်တင်ကားကနေ

by jumping off the truck that was carrying the girls.

ခုန်ချပြီးသူမလွတ်မြောက်အောင် လုပ်နိုင်ခဲ့တယ်။

But when she landed, she broke both her legs,

ဒါပေမဲ့ သူမ မြေပေါ်ကျတော့ ခြေထောက်နှစ်ဖက်လုံး ကျိုးသွားပြီး

and she had to crawl on her tummy to hide in the bushes.

She told me she was terrified that Boko Haram would come back for her.

She was one of 57 girls who would escape by jumping off trucks that day.

သူမဟာ အဲဒီနေ့က လွတ်မြောက်နိုင်ခဲ့တဲ့ မိန်းကလေး ၅၇ ဦးထဲက တစ်ဦးပါ။

This story, quite rightly, caused ripples

around the world.

People like Michelle Obama, Malala and others

lent their voices in protest,

သူတို့ရဲ့ သဘောထားတွေ အားဖြည့်ကြတယ်။

and at about the same time -- I was living in London at the time --

အဲဒီတစ်ချိန်တည်းမှာ ကျွန်မက London မှာ နေနေတုန်းမှာ

I was sent from London to Abuja to cover the World Economic Forum

ကျွန်မကို London ကနေ Abuja ကို Nigeria ကနေ ပထမဆုံး ကျင်းပနေတဲ့

that Nigeria was hosting for the first time.

World Economic Forum ကို သတင်းယူဖို့ စေလွှတ်ခံရတယ်။

But when we arrived, it was clear that there was only one story in town.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကျွန်မတို့ရောက်တော့ မြို့ထဲမှာ အဖြစ်ကတစ်ခုတည်းဆိုတာ ရှင်းနေတယ်။

We put the government under pressure.

အစိုးရကို ကျွန်မတို့ ဖိအားပေးတယ်။

We asked tough questions about what they were doing

ဒီမိန်းကလေးတွေကို ပြန်ခေါ်ဖို့ ဘာတွေလုပ်နေလဲလို့

to bring these girls back.

ခက်ခဲတဲ့ မေးခွန်းတွေ မေးခဲ့တယ်။

Understandably,

ကံဆိုးချင်တော့

they weren't too happy with our line of questioning,

ကျွန်မတို့ မေးခွန်းတန်းကြီးကို သူတို့ ဘဝင်မကျကြဘူး။

and let's just say we received our fair share of "alternative facts."

"ရှေ့နောက်မညီတဲ့အချက်တွေ" ရဲ့ အတော်ကြီး ရခဲ့တယ်ပဲ ဆိုပါတော့။

Influential Nigerians were telling us at the time

အဲဒီတုန်းက သြဇာရှိတဲ့ နိုက်ဂျီးရီးယန်းတွေက

that we were naïve,

ကျွန်မတို့ကို နုံတယ်၊

we didn't understand the political situation in Nigeria.

နိုက်ဂျီးရီးယားက နိင်ငံရေးကို နားမလည်ကြဘူးလို့ ပြောနေကြတယ်။

But they also told us

ဒါပေမဲ့ Chibok မိန်းကလေးတွေရဲ့ ဇာတ်လမ်းဟာ

that the story of the Chibok girls

လှည့်ကွက်လို့လည်း

was a hoax.

ပြောကြတယ်။

Sadly, this hoax narrative has persisted,

စိတ်မကောင်းစရာက ဒီလှည့်ကွက် ဇာတ်လမ်းက ဆက်လက်ရှိနေပြီး

and there are still people in Nigeria today

Chibok မိန်းကလေးတွေ တစ်ခါမှ ပြန်ပေးဆွဲမခံရဘူးလို့

who believe that the Chibok girls were never kidnapped.

ယုံကြည်သူတွေ နိုက်ဂျီးရီးယား မှာ ယနေ့ထိ ရှိဆဲပါ။

Yet I was talking to people like these --

ဒါပေမဲ့ဒီလိုလူတွေကို ကျွန်မ ပြောနေခဲ့တယ်၊

devastated parents,

ယူကျုံးမရဖြစ်နေတဲ့မိဘတွေကိုပါ၊

who told us that on the day Boko Haram kidnapped their daughters,

အဲဒီနေ့က Boko Haram တွေကသူတို့ သမီးတွေကို ပြန်ပေးဆွဲသွားတယ်၊

they ran into the Sambisa Forest after the trucks carrying their daughters.

​သမီးတွေကို ကုန်တင်ကားနဲ့တင်ပြီး​ Sambis သစ်တောထဲ ပြေးဝင်သွားတယ်လို့​္ပေပြာသူတွေပါ။

They were armed with machetes, but they were forced to turn back

သူတို့ဟာ တောခုတ်ဓားတွေနဲ့ တိုက်ဖို့ပြင်ခဲ့ပေမဲ့ Boko Haram တွေမှာ

because Boko Haram had guns.

သေနတ်တွေရှိတော့ အတင်းပြန်ဆုတ်ခဲ့ရတယ်။

For two years, inevitably, the news agenda moved on,

မလွှဲဧကန်ပဲ နှစ်နှစ်လုံးလုံး သတင်းအစီအစဉ် ဆက်ရှိနေပြီး

and for two years,

နှစ်နှစ်လုံးလုံး

we didn't hear much about the Chibok girls.

Everyone presumed they were dead.

သူတို့တွေ သေပြီလို့ လူတိုင်းက ထင်ခဲ့တာ၊

But in April last year,

ဒါပေမဲ့ မနှစ်က ဧပြီမှာတော့

I was able to obtain this video.

ဒီဗီဒီယိုကို ရယူနိုင်ခဲ့တယ်။

that Boko Haram filmed as a proof of life,

and through a source, I obtained this video.

But before I could publish it,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒါကို မထုတ်ပြန်ခင်

I had to travel to the northeast of Nigeria

ဒါကို မိဘတွေကို ပြောဖို့၊ အတည်ပြုဖို့ နိုက်ဂျီးရီးယား

to talk to the parents, to verify it.

မြောက်ပိုင်းကို ခရီးထွက်ခဲ့ရတယ်။

I didn't have to wait too long for confirmation.

အတည်ပြုချက်ရဖို့ အကြာကြီး မစောင့်ခဲ့ရပါဘူး။

One of the mothers, when she watched the video, told me

ဒီဗီဒီယိုကိုကြည်တော့ မိခင်တစ်ယောက် ကျွန်မကို ပြောတာက

that if she could have reached into the laptop

လက်တော့ပ်ထဲကိုသာ သူမ ဝင်လို့ရပြီး

and pulled our her child from the laptop,

သူမရဲ့ ကလေးကို ဆွဲထုတ်လို့ရရင်

she would have done so.

ဆွဲထုတ်လိုက်မိမှာပဲတဲ့။

For those of you who are parents, like myself, in the audience,

ကျွန်မလိုပဲ ပရိတ်သတ်ထဲက မိဘဖြစ်သူတွေအတွက်တော့

you can only imagine the anguish

့ဒီအမေ ခံစားရတဲ့ မချိတင်ကဲ ဝေဒနာကို စိတ်ကူးကြည့်လို့ပဲ

that that mother felt.

ရနိုင်တာပါ။

This video would go on to kick-start negotiation talks with Boko Haram.

ဒီဗီဒီယိုက Boko Haram နဲ့ ညှိနှိုင်းဆွေး နွေးပွဲတွေ နှိုးဆွဖို့ ဆက်ဖြစ်စေလိမ့်မယ်။

And a Nigerian senator told me that because of this video

နိုက်ဂျီးရီးယန်း လွှတ်တော်အမတ်က ကျွန်မကိုပြောတာက ဒီဗီဒီယိုကြောင့်

they entered into those talks,

သူတို့ ဆွေးနွေးပွဲတွေ ဝင်ခဲ့တယ်၊

because they had long presumed that the Chibok girls were dead.

အကြောင်းက Chibok မိန်းကလေးတွေ သေပြီလို့ ယူဆခဲ့ကြလို့တဲ့လေ။

Twenty-one girls were freed in October last year.

ပြီးခဲ့တဲ့ အောက်တိုဘာမှ မိန်းကလေး နှစ်ဆယ့်တစ်ဦး လွတ်ခဲ့တယ်။

Sadly, nearly 200 of them still remain missing.

ဝမ်းနည်းစရာက သူတို့ထဲက ၂၀၀ နီးပါးက ပျောက်နေတုန်းပါ။

I must confess that I have not been a dispassionate observer

covering this story.

မဖြစ်ခဲ့ဘူးဆိုတာပါ။

I am furious when I think about the wasted opportunities

ဒီမိန်းကလေးတွေကို ကယ်တင်ဖို့ ဖြုန်းတီးလိုက်တဲ့ အခွင့်အလမ်းတွေကို

to rescue these girls.

တွေးမိတော့ ဒေါသဖြစ်မိတယ်။

I am furious when I think about what the parents have told me,

ဒါတွေဟာ ချမ်းသာပြီး သြဇာရှိတဲ့သူတွေရဲ့ သမီးတွေသာဆိုရင်ဒီထက်ကို

that if these were daughters of the rich and the powerful,

အများကြီးစောပြီး တွေ့လိမ့်မယ်လို့ မိဘတွေ ကျွန်မကို ပြောတာ

they would have been found much earlier.

တွေးမိတော့ ကျွန်မ ဒေါသဖြစ်မိတယ်။

And I am furious

အဲဒီလှည့်ကွက် ဇာတ်လမ်းဆိုတာကို

that the hoax narrative,

ကျွန်မ ဒေါသဖြစ်မိတယ်။

I firmly believe,

ကျွန်မ ခိုင်မာစွာ ယုံကြည်တာက

caused a delay;

နှောင့်နှေးမှုဖြစ်စေတယ်၊

it was part of the reason for the delay in their return.

သူတို့တုံ့ပြန်မှုမှာ နှောင့်နှေးတဲ့ အကြောင်းရဲ့ အပိုင်းဆိုတာပါ

This illustrates to me the deadly danger of fake news.

ဒါက ကျွန်မကို သတင်းတုတွေရဲ့ သေလောက်တဲ့ အန္တရာယ်ကို မီးထိုးပြလိုက်တယ်။

So what can we do about it?

ဒီတော့ ဒါနဲ့ ဘာလုပ်နိုင်လဲ။

There are some very smart people,

အရမ်းကို တော်တဲ့ လူတွေရှိတယ်၊

smart engineers at Google and Facebook,

Google နဲ့ Facebook က နည်းပညာသုံးပြီး သတင်းတုတွ​ေ

who are trying to use technology to stop the spread of fake news.

ပျံ့ပွားတာ တးဆီးဖို့ ကြိုးပမ်းနေသူတဲ့ တော်တဲ့ အင်ဂျင်နီယာတွေပါ။

But beyond that, I think everybody here -- you and I --

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒါရဲ့အလွန်မှာ ကျွန်မ ထင်တာက ဒီကလူတိုင်း ရှင်တို့ရော ကျွန်မပါ

we have a role to play in that.

ဒီမှာ ပါဝင်ဖို့ ကဏ္ဍတစ်ရပ်ရှိတယ်။

We are the ones who share the content.

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ အကြောင်းအရာကို မျှဝေသူတွေပါ။

We are the ones who share the stories online.

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ အွန်လိုင်းမှာ ဇာတ်လမ်းတွေ မျှဝေသူတွေပါ။

In this day and age, we're all publishers,

ဒီနေ့နဲ့ ဒီခေတ်မှာ အားလုံးဟာ ထုတ်ပြန်သူတွေပါ၊

and we have responsibility.

In my job as a journalist,

သတင်းစာသမားအဖြစ် ကျွန်မလုပ်မှာ

I check, I verify.

ကျွန်မ စစ်ဆေးတယ်၊ အတည်ပြုတယ်၊

I trust my gut, but I ask tough questions.

ကိုယ့်စိတ် ကိုယ်ယုံပေမဲ့ ခက်ခဲတဲ့ မေးခွန်းတွေတေ့ မေးပါတယ်။

Why is this person telling me this story?

ဘာကြောင့် ဒီပုဂ္ဂိုလ်က ဒီဇာတ်လမ်းကို ကျွန်မကို ပြောနေတာလဲ။

What do they have to gain by sharing this information?

ဒီသတင်းအချက်အလက်ကို မျှဝေခြင်းက သူတို့ ဘာတွေရဖို့ လိုတာလဲ။

Do they have a hidden agenda?

သူတို့မှာ ဝှက်ထားတဲ့ အစီအစဉ်ရှိလား။

I really believe that we must all start to ask tougher questions

ကျွန်မတို့အားလုံး အွန်လိုင်းမှာ တွေ့ရှိတဲ့ သတင်းအချက်အလက်တွေ အကြောင်း

of information that we discover online.

မေးခွန်းတွေ အတူတူ စတင် မေးခွန်းထုတ်ကြရပါမယ်။

Research shows that some of us don't even read beyond headlines

သုတေသနကပြတာတာ ကျွန်မတို့တစ်ချို့ဟာ ဇာတ်လမ်းတွေကို မမျှဝေခင်

before we share stories.

ခေါင်းစဉ်တွေကိုတောင် မဖတ်ကြဘူးတဲ့။

Who here has done that?

I know I have.

ကျွန်မလုပ်တာ ကျွန်မသိတယ်။

But what if

ဒါပေမဲ့ အပေါ်ယံ တန်ဖိုးမှာ

we stopped taking information that we discover at face value?

ကျွန်မတို့ တွေ့ရှိထဲ့ သတင်းအချက်အလက်ကို ယူတာ ရပ်လိုက်ရင်ရော။

What if we stop to think about the consequence

of the information that we pass on

and its potential to incite violence or hatred?

of the information that we share?
