I want to tell you a story about a girl.

دەمەوێت چیرۆکێکتان لەبارەى .کچێکەوە بۆ بگێڕمەوە

But I can't tell you her real name.

.بەڵام ناتوانم ناوى ڕاستەقینەیتان پێ بڵێم

So let's just call her Hadiza.

.بۆیە با هەر پێى بڵێین هادیزە

Hadiza is 20.

.هادیزە تەمەنى 20 ساڵە

She's shy,

،کچێکى شەرمنە

but she has a beautiful smile that lights up her face.

بەڵام پێکەنینێکى زۆر جوانى هەیە .کە ڕوخسارى دەدرەوشێنێتەوە

But she's in constant pain.

بەڵام ئەو لە ئازارێکى بەردەوامدایە

And she will likely be on medication for the rest of her life.

ئەگەر هەیە تا کۆتایى ژیانى .دەبێت چارەسەر وەربگرێت

Do you want to know why?

دەتانەوێت هۆکارەکەى بزانن ؟

Hadiza is a Chibok girl,

،هادیزە خەڵکى (چیبۆک) ى نەیجیریایە

and on April 14, 2014, she was kidnapped

لە 14ى نیسانى 2014دا فڕێندرا،

by Boko Haram terrorists.

لەلایەن تیرۆرستانى بۆکۆ حەرامەوە.

She managed to escape, though,

بەڵام توانى هەڵبێت

by jumping off the truck that was carrying the girls.

بە بازدان لەو لۆرییەى .کە کچەکانى دەگواستەوە

But when she landed, she broke both her legs,

کە بازى دا هەردوو قاچى شکا،

and she had to crawl on her tummy to hide in the bushes.

وە دەبوایە بە سنگە خشکێ بڕوات .تا لەناو گژو گیاکاندا خۆى حەشار بدات

She told me she was terrified that Boko Haram would come back for her.

پێى وتم کە زۆر تۆقیوە لەترسی پێى . بزانن و بۆى بگەڕێنەوەو دەستگیریبکەنەوە

She was one of 57 girls who would escape by jumping off trucks that day.

ئەو یەکێک بوو لەو 57 کچەى ئەو ڕۆژە بە بازدان لە لۆرییەکەوە ڕزگاریان بووە.

This story, quite rightly, caused ripples

ئەم چیرۆکە ڕاستەوخۆ مشتومڕێکى زۆرى نایەوە

around the world.

لە سەرانسەری جیهاندا

People like Michelle Obama, Malala and others

کەسانى وەک میشێل ئۆباما، مەلالە و چەندانى تر

lent their voices in protest,

دەنگیان بۆ ناڕەزایى ،یەکخست لەدژى ئەوەى رویدا

and at about the same time -- I was living in London at the time --

لەو کاتەدا من لە لەندەن دەژیام

I was sent from London to Abuja to cover the World Economic Forum

دواتر نێردرام بۆ ئەبوجا بۆ ڕووماڵکردنى کۆربەندی ئابوورى جیهانى

that Nigeria was hosting for the first time.

.کە بۆ یەکەمجار لە نێجیریا ساز کرابوو

But when we arrived, it was clear that there was only one story in town.

بەڵام کاتێک گەیشتین، دیاربوو کە تەنها یەک .چیرۆک لە ناوچەکەدا دەگێردرایەوەو باسدەکرا

We put the government under pressure.

.حکومەتمان خستە ژێر فشار

We asked tough questions about what they were doing

پرسیارمان ئاڕاستە دەکردن لەبارەى هەوڵەکانیان

to bring these girls back.

بۆ گەڕاندنەوەى کچە رفێندراوەکان

Understandably,

،بێگومان

they weren't too happy with our line of questioning,

،دڵخۆش نەبوون بە لێشاوى پرسیارەکانمان

and let's just say we received our fair share of "alternative facts."

بەشى خۆمان لە چەند ڕاستییەکى جێگرەوە وەرگرت.

(Laughter)

Influential Nigerians were telling us at the time

نێجیرییەکان لەو کاتەدا بە ئێمەیان وت

that we were naïve,

،کە ئێمە گێلبووین

we didn't understand the political situation in Nigeria.

.ئێمە لە دۆخى سیاسى نێجیریا تێنەدەگەیشتین

But they also told us

وە پێشیان وتین

that the story of the Chibok girls

کە چیرۆکى کچەکانى چیبۆک

was a hoax.

.تەنها پرۆپاگەندە بووە

Sadly, this hoax narrative has persisted,

،بەداخەوە بەو شێوەیە چیرۆکەکە بڵاوبوویەوە

and there are still people in Nigeria today

هێشتا خەڵکانێک هەن لە نێجیریادا

who believe that the Chibok girls were never kidnapped.

کە پێیانوایە کە کچانى چیبۆک .هەرگیز نەفڕێندراون

Yet I was talking to people like these --

هێشتا من قسەم بۆ ئەو کەسانە دەکرد

devastated parents,

،دایک و باوکە بێچارانە

who told us that on the day Boko Haram kidnapped their daughters,

پێیان وتین ئەو ڕۆژەى بوکۆ حەرام کچەکانیانى فڕاند

they ran into the Sambisa Forest after the trucks carrying their daughters.

ئەمان بەدواى ئەو لۆرییەى کچەکانى بردووە ڕایانکردووە بۆ دارستانى سامبیسا

They were armed with machetes, but they were forced to turn back

ئەمان تەوریان پێبووە بەڵام ناچارکراون بگەڕێنەوە .

because Boko Haram had guns.

.چوونکە بۆکۆ حەرام چەکى پێبووە

For two years, inevitably, the news agenda moved on,

بۆ ماوەى دوو ساڵ، ئاژانسەکانى هەواڵ ،بابەتى کچەکانى چیبۆکیان تێپەڕاند

and for two years,

،و بۆ ماوەى دوو ساڵ

we didn't hear much about the Chibok girls.

.شتێکى وامان لەبارەى کچەکانەوە نەبیست

Everyone presumed they were dead.

.هەمووان پێیان وابوو کە ئەوان مردوون

But in April last year,

،بەڵام لە مانگى نیسانى ساڵى ڕابردوو

I was able to obtain this video.

.من توانیم ئەم ڤیدیۆیەم دەستبکەوێت

This is a still from the video

ئەمە هەر بەشێکە لە ڤیدیۆکە

that Boko Haram filmed as a proof of life,

ئەم ڤیدیۆیە لەلایەن بۆکۆ حەرامەوە گیرابوو ، بۆ بەڵگەی مانی کچەکان

and through a source, I obtained this video.

.وە لە سەرچاوەیەکەوە ڤیدیۆکەم دەستکەوت

But before I could publish it,

،بەڵام پێش ئەوەى بڵاوى بکەمەوە

I had to travel to the northeast of Nigeria

دەبوایە بچوومایە بۆ باشورى ڕۆژهەڵاتى نێجیریا

to talk to the parents, to verify it.

بۆئەوەى قسە لەگەڵ باوانیان بکەم دڵنیابمەوە لە ڕاستیکە.

I didn't have to wait too long for confirmation.

بۆ دڵنیابوونەوە پێویستم .بە کاتێکى زۆر نەبوو

One of the mothers, when she watched the video, told me

یەکێک لە دایکەکان کاتێک سەیرى ڤیدیۆکەى کرد پێى وتم

that if she could have reached into the laptop

کە گەر بیتوانیایە بچێتە ناو لاپتۆپەکە

and pulled our her child from the laptop,

،و کچەکەى بهێنایەتە دەرەوە لە لاپتۆپەکە

she would have done so.

.دەیچوو و دەیهێنا

For those of you who are parents, like myself, in the audience,

بۆ ئەوانەى کە لە ئامادەبووان ،باوک و دایکن وەک من

you can only imagine the anguish

دەتوانی تەنها خەیاڵى ئەو ئازارە بکەی

that that mother felt.

.کە ئەو دایکە چ هەستێکى هەبووە

This video would go on to kick-start negotiation talks with Boko Haram.

ئەم ڤیدیۆیە دەبێتە هۆى دەستپێکردنى گفتووگۆکان لەگەڵ بۆکۆ حەرامدا.

And a Nigerian senator told me that because of this video

وە سینەیتۆرێکى نێجیرى بە منى وت کە بە هۆى ئەو ڤیدیۆیەوە

they entered into those talks,

،کەوتوونەتە گفتووگۆ

because they had long presumed that the Chibok girls were dead.

چونکە ئەوان زۆر پێشتر وایانزانیبوو .کە کچەکانى چیبۆک مردوون

Twenty-one girls were freed in October last year.

٢١لە کچەکان لە ئۆکتۆبەرى .ساڵى ڕابردوودا ڕزگاریان بوو

Sadly, nearly 200 of them still remain missing.

.بەداخەوە هێشتا نزیکى 200یان دیار نین

I must confess that I have not been a dispassionate observer

من دەبێت دان بەوەدا بنێم کە چاودێرێکى بێلایەن نەبووم

covering this story.

.بۆ ئەم چیرۆکە

I am furious when I think about the wasted opportunities

هەست بە توڕەیى دەکەم کاتێ بیر لەوهەلە لەدەستچوانە دەکەمەوە

to rescue these girls.

.بۆ ڕزگارکردنى ئەو کچانە

I am furious when I think about what the parents have told me,

هەست بە توڕەیى دەکەم کاتێک بیر لەو ،دایک و باوکانە دەکەمەوە کە پێیان وتم

that if these were daughters of the rich and the powerful,

گەر ئەوان کچى کەسانى ، دەوڵەمەند و بەهێز بوونایە

they would have been found much earlier.

.زۆر زووتر دۆزرابوونەوە

And I am furious

هەست بە توڕەیى دەکەم

that the hoax narrative,

،کە چیرۆکەکە بە ساختە ناوبرا

I firmly believe,

،بڕوام وایە

caused a delay;

،کە بووە هۆى دواکەوتن

it was part of the reason for the delay in their return.

ئەوە بەشێک بو لە .هۆکاری دواکەوتنی گەڕانەوەیان

This illustrates to me the deadly danger of fake news.

ئەمە ئەوەم بۆ ئاشکرا دەکات کە .هەواڵى هەڵە و ساختە چەند مەترسیدارە

So what can we do about it?

دەتوانین چى لەبارەى ئەمەوە بکەین؟

There are some very smart people,

،چەندین کەسی زیرەک هەن

smart engineers at Google and Facebook,

ئەندازیارى سەرکەوتو هەن لە کۆمپانیاى گۆگڵ و فەیسبووک

who are trying to use technology to stop the spread of fake news.

کە هەوڵدەدەن تەکنەلۆجیا بەکاربهێنن بۆ .وەستاندنى بڵابوونەوەى هەواڵى هەڵە

But beyond that, I think everybody here -- you and I --

بەڵام لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا، پێم وایە کە هەموو کەسێک لێرە من تۆ

we have a role to play in that.

دەبێت ڕۆڵمان لەوەدا هەبێت،

We are the ones who share the content.

.ئێمە ئەوانەین کە ناوەڕۆکەکان باس دەکەین

We are the ones who share the stories online.

ئێمە ئەوانەین کە چیرۆکەکان . ئۆنلاین دەگێڕینەوە

In this day and age, we're all publishers,

لەم کاتەدا ئێمە بڵاوکراوەین.

and we have responsibility.

.و بەرپرسیاریەتیمان هەیە

In my job as a journalist,

،لە کارەکەمدا وەک ڕۆژنامەنووسێک

I check, I verify.

پێداچوونەوە دەکەم و دڵنیا دەبمەوە

I trust my gut, but I ask tough questions.

متمانەم بە هەستەکانمە بەڵام .پرسیارى قورس دەکەم

Why is this person telling me this story?

بۆچى ئەم کەسە ئەم چیرۆکەم پێدەڵێت؟

What do they have to gain by sharing this information?

ئەوان پێویستە چى بەدەست بهێنن بە وتنى ئەو زانیارییانە؟

Do they have a hidden agenda?

ئایا ئەجێندایەکى شاراوەیان هەیە؟

I really believe that we must all start to ask tougher questions

بڕوام وایە کە دەبێت دەست بکەین بە پرسیارى قورستر.

of information that we discover online.

.لەو زانیارییانەى کە ئۆنلاین دەیدۆزینەوە

Research shows that some of us don't even read beyond headlines

توێژینەوەیەک دەریخستووە کە هەندێک لە ئێمە تەنانەت ناونیشانى هەواڵەکان ناخوێنینەوە

before we share stories.

.پێش بڵاوکردنەوە

Who here has done that?

کێ لێرە وایکردووە؟

I know I have.

.خۆشم ئەوەم کردووە

But what if

بەڵام چى دەبێت

we stopped taking information that we discover at face value?

کە واز بێنین لە وەرگرتنى ئەو زانیارییانەى کە بۆ یەکەمجار دێتە بەرچاومان؟

What if we stop to think about the consequence

چى دەبێت کە بوەستین و بیربکەینەوە لە دەرەنجامى

of the information that we pass on

ئەو زانیارییانەى بڵاوى دەکەینەوە

and its potential to incite violence or hatred?

کە چەند رۆڵى هەیە لە درووستکردنى توندوتیژى و رقلێبوونەوە؟

What if we stop to think about the real-life consequences

چى دەبێت گەر بوەستین لە بیرکرنەوە لە چارەنووسى ڕاستەقینەى ژیان

of the information that we share?

بەهۆى ئەو زانیارییانەى بڵاوى دەکەینەوە؟
