I want to tell you a story about a girl.

But I can't tell you her real name.

So let's just call her Hadiza.

그래서 그냥 그녀를 하디자라고 부를게요.

Hadiza is 20.

하디자는 20살이에요.

She's shy,

부끄러움도 많고요.

but she has a beautiful smile that lights up her face.

그러나 그녀는 얼굴을 화사하게 하는 아름다운 미소를 가지고 있어요.

But she's in constant pain.

그러나 그녀는 지속적인 고통에 시달리고 있어요

And she will likely be on medication for the rest of her life.

평생 약에 의지하면서 살아야 할지도 몰라요.

Hadiza is a Chibok girl,

하디자는 치복(Chibok) 소녀예요.

and on April 14, 2014, she was kidnapped

2014년 4월 14일에

그녀는 보코 하람(Boko Haram) 무장세력에게 납치 되었어요.

by Boko Haram terrorists.

She managed to escape, though,

그래도 그녀는 탈출에 성공했어요.

by jumping off the truck that was carrying the girls.

소녀들을 데려가던 트럭에서 뛰어내렸습니다.

But when she landed, she broke both her legs,

그러나 그녀가 뛰어내렸을 때, 양쪽 다리가 모두 부러졌어요.

and she had to crawl on her tummy to hide in the bushes.

그래서 그녀는 몸을 감추기 위해 숲 속까지 기어가야 했죠.

She told me she was terrified that Boko Haram would come back for her.

그녀는 보코하람 세력이 따라올까봐 몹시 두려웠다고 합니다.

She was one of 57 girls who would escape by jumping off trucks that day.

그녀는 트럭에서 뛰어내려 탈출한 57명의 소녀 중 한명입니다.

This story, quite rightly, caused ripples

이 이야기는 당연히 전세계에 파장을 일으켰습니다.

around the world.

People like Michelle Obama, Malala and others

미셸 오바마, 말랄라 같은 사람들이

lent their voices in protest,

항의의 목소리를 높였습니다.

and at about the same time -- I was living in London at the time --

그리고 그 때, 저는 런던에서 살고 있었는데

I was sent from London to Abuja to cover the World Economic Forum

런던에서 아부자(Abuja)로

나이지리아에서 처음으로 개최하는 월드 이코노믹 포럼에 참석하게 되었어요.

that Nigeria was hosting for the first time.

But when we arrived, it was clear that there was only one story in town.

We put the government under pressure.

우리는 정부를 압박했어요.

We asked tough questions about what they were doing

정부가 소녀들을 구하기 위해 뭘 했는지 날카로운 질문들을 했습니다.

to bring these girls back.

Understandably,

당연하게도

they weren't too happy with our line of questioning,

그들은 우리의 질문들을 반가워하지 않았어요.

and let's just say we received our fair share of "alternative facts."

그리고 우리는 그저 "대안적인 사실"을 듣게 되었습니다.

Influential Nigerians were telling us at the time

영향력이 있는 나이지리아인들은 그 당시에 우리에게 말해주었어요.

that we were naïve,

we didn't understand the political situation in Nigeria.

우리가 나이지리아의 정치상황을 이해하지 못했다고요.

But they also told us

또한 그들은 우리에게

that the story of the Chibok girls

치복소녀들의 이야기는

was a hoax.

거짓이라고 말했습니다.

Sadly, this hoax narrative has persisted,

슬프게도, 이 거짓 이야기는 계속 되어왔고

and there are still people in Nigeria today

오늘날에도 나이지리아에는 아주 많은 사람들이

who believe that the Chibok girls were never kidnapped.

치복소녀들이 납치된 적이 전혀 없다고 믿고 있습니다.

Yet I was talking to people like these --

그러나 저는 이런 사람들과 이야기를 나누었어요.

절망에 빠진 그들의 부모님들이죠.

devastated parents,

who told us that on the day Boko Haram kidnapped their daughters,

그들은 어느날 보코하람 세력이 그들의 딸들을 납치해 갔다고 했어요.

they ran into the Sambisa Forest after the trucks carrying their daughters.

그들의 딸들이 트럭으로 운반된 후 그들은 삼비사 숲으로 따라 들어갔어요.

They were armed with machetes, but they were forced to turn back

그들은 마체테로 무장한 상태였지만, 강제로 되돌아 갈 수 밖에 없었어요.

because Boko Haram had guns.

왜냐하면 보코하람은 총을 가지고 있었기 때문이죠.

For two years, inevitably, the news agenda moved on,

2년 동안 필연적으로, 뉴스에서 서서히 잊혀져갔고

and for two years,

그리고 2년 동안

we didn't hear much about the Chibok girls.

우리는 치복소녀들에 대한 이야기를 들을 수 없었습니다.

Everyone presumed they were dead.

But in April last year,

I was able to obtain this video.

저는 이 영상을 구할 수 있었습니다.

This is a still from the video

that Boko Haram filmed as a proof of life,

and through a source, I obtained this video.

But before I could publish it,

I had to travel to the northeast of Nigeria

나이지리아의 북동부로 먼저 가서

to talk to the parents, to verify it.

I didn't have to wait too long for confirmation.

확인을 받기까지 오래 기다릴 필요도 없었어요.

One of the mothers, when she watched the video, told me

그 중 한명의 엄마는 영상을 보며

that if she could have reached into the laptop

노트북 안으로 들어갈 수 있다면

and pulled our her child from the laptop,

들어가서 그녀의 자식을 노트북에서 끌어낼 수 있다면

she would have done so.

그렇게 할 것이라고 말했어요.

For those of you who are parents, like myself, in the audience,

여기에 계신 부모님들, 제 자신을 포함해서요.

you can only imagine the anguish

우리는 이 엄마의 마음이 어떨지 그 고통을 상상도 못할 것입니다.

that that mother felt.

This video would go on to kick-start negotiation talks with Boko Haram.

이 비디오는 보코 하람과 협상을 시작하게 해주었습니다.

And a Nigerian senator told me that because of this video

그리고 나이지리아의 상원의원이 저에게 말하길

이 영상 덕분에 그들이 대화를 시작할 수 있었다고 했습니다.

they entered into those talks,

because they had long presumed that the Chibok girls were dead.

왜냐하면 오랜 시간 동안 치복소녀들이 죽었을 것이라고 추정해왔기 때문이지요.

Twenty-one girls were freed in October last year.

21명의 소녀들이 지난 10월에 풀려났습니다.

Sadly, nearly 200 of them still remain missing.

슬프게도, 200명 가까이 되는 소녀들이 아직도 행방불명입니다.

I must confess that I have not been a dispassionate observer

저는 객관적인 관찰자로서, 이 이야기를 다루지 않았음을 고백합니다.

covering this story.

I am furious when I think about the wasted opportunities

그 소녀들을 구출할 수 있었던 기회를 놓친 것을 생각하면 정말 화가 납니다.

to rescue these girls.

I am furious when I think about what the parents have told me,

이 소녀들의 부모님들이 한말을 생각하면 정말 화가 납니다.

that if these were daughters of the rich and the powerful,

they would have been found much earlier.

훨씬 금방 찾았을 것이라는 말입니다.

And I am furious

그리고 저는 정말 화가납니다.

that the hoax narrative,

제가 확고히 믿었던 그 거짓의 이야기가

I firmly believe,

caused a delay;

지연을 야기했죠.

it was part of the reason for the delay in their return.

이것이 그들의 구출을 지체하게 한 이유 중의 한 부분이 되었어요.

This illustrates to me the deadly danger of fake news.

이것이 가짜 뉴스의 위험성을 실제로 입증해 주었어요.

So what can we do about it?

우리는 그럼 이것에 대해 무엇을 할 수 있을까요?

There are some very smart people,

아주 영리한 사람들이 있어요.

smart engineers at Google and Facebook,

구글과 페이스북에 영리한 엔지니어들이 있죠.

who are trying to use technology to stop the spread of fake news.

기술을 이용하여 가짜 뉴스를 막으려고 노력하지요.

But beyond that, I think everybody here -- you and I --

그러나 그외에, 저와 여러분, 우리 모두는

we have a role to play in that.

해야 할 역할이 있어요.

We are the ones who share the content.

우리는 그 내용들을 실어나르는 역할을 하죠.

We are the ones who share the stories online.

우리는 그런 이야기들을 온라인상에서 공유해요.

In this day and age, we're all publishers,

지금 이 시대에서는, 우리 모두가 출판자예요.

and we have responsibility.

그래서 우리에게 책임도 있죠.

In my job as a journalist,

저는 저널리스트로서

I check, I verify.

사실을 확인해요.

I trust my gut, but I ask tough questions.

제 직감을 믿지만, 저는 냉정한 질문들을 해요.

Why is this person telling me this story?

왜 이 사람이 나에게 이런 이야기를 하는 것일까?

What do they have to gain by sharing this information?

이런 정보를 공유함으로써, 이 사람들이 얻는 것은 무엇일까?

Do they have a hidden agenda?

숨은 의도는 무엇인가?

I really believe that we must all start to ask tougher questions

저는 모두가 인터넷의 정보들에 대해 더욱 냉정한 질문을 해야 한다고 생각합니다.

of information that we discover online.

Research shows that some of us don't even read beyond headlines

많은 사람들이 헤드라인만 읽고 정보를 공유한다는 연구결과가 있습니다.

before we share stories.

Who here has done that?

But what if

we stopped taking information that we discover at face value?

What if we stop to think about the consequence

of the information that we pass on

and its potential to incite violence or hatred?

What if we stop to think about the real-life consequences

of the information that we share?
