I want to tell you a story about a girl.

ഞാന്‍ ഒരു കഥ പറയാം, ഒരു പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയുടെ കഥ.

But I can't tell you her real name.

പക്ഷേ എനിക്കവളുടെ യഥാര്‍ത്ഥ പേര് പറയാനാകില്ല.

So let's just call her Hadiza.

അതുകൊണ്ട് നമുക്കവളെ 'ഹദീസ' എന്ന് വിളിക്കാം

Hadiza is 20.

ഹദീസയ്ക്ക് വയസ്സ് ഇരുപത്

She's shy,

നാണം കുണുങ്ങിയാണവള്‍

but she has a beautiful smile that lights up her face.

പക്ഷേ, അവളുടെ മുഖത്ത് എപ്പോഴും മനോഹരമായ ഒരു പുഞ്ചിരിയുണ്ടാകും

But she's in constant pain.

പക്ഷേ, അവളിന്ന് തീരാവേദനയിലാണ്

And she will likely be on medication for the rest of her life.

ഇനിയുള്ള ജീവിതം ചികിത്സകളും മരുന്നുമായി തള്ളിനീക്കേണ്ടി വന്നേക്കാം

Do you want to know why?

എന്തുകൊണ്ടാണെന്നറിയണ്ടേ?

Hadiza is a Chibok girl,

ഹദീസ ചിബോക്കിലെ (നൈജീരിയ) പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയാണ്,

and on April 14, 2014, she was kidnapped

2014 ഏപ്രില്‍ 14ന്

അവളെ ബോക്കോ ഹറാം തീവ്രവാദികള്‍ തട്ടിക്കൊണ്ട് പോയി

by Boko Haram terrorists.

She managed to escape, though,

പെണ്‍കുട്ടികളെയും വഹിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുള്ള ട്രക്കില്‍ നിന്നും

by jumping off the truck that was carrying the girls.

ചാടി രക്ഷപെടാന്‍ അവള്‍ക്ക് സാധിച്ചു

But when she landed, she broke both her legs,

പക്ഷേ, താഴെ വീണ് അവളുടെ രണ്ട് കാലുകളും ഒടിഞ്ഞു

and she had to crawl on her tummy to hide in the bushes.

ഒരു കുറ്റിക്കാട്ടില്‍ ഒളിക്കാന്‍ അവള്‍ക്ക് ഇഴഞ്ഞ് നീങ്ങേണ്ടി വന്നു

She told me she was terrified that Boko Haram would come back for her.

തീവ്രവാദികള്‍ തനിക്കു വേണ്ടി തിരിച്ചു വരുമെന്ന് അവള്‍ ഭയന്നു

She was one of 57 girls who would escape by jumping off trucks that day.

അന്ന് അത്തരത്തില്‍ രക്ഷപെട്ട 57 പെണ്‍കുട്ടികളില്‍ ഒരുവളായിരുന്നു ഹദീസ

This story, quite rightly, caused ripples

ഈ സംഭവം, അക്ഷരാര്‍ത്ഥത്തിൽ

around the world.

ലോകമൊട്ടാകെ അലയടിച്ചു

People like Michelle Obama, Malala and others

മിഷേല്‍ ഒബാമയേയും മലാലയേയും പോലുള്ളവര്‍

lent their voices in protest,

പ്രതിഷേധ സ്വരമുയര്‍ത്തി.

and at about the same time -- I was living in London at the time --

ആ സമയം ഞാന്‍ ലണ്ടനിലായിരുന്നു. ലണ്ടനില്‍ നിന്നും 'അബുജ'യിലേക്ക് (നൈജീരിയ)

I was sent from London to Abuja to cover the World Economic Forum

വേള്‍ഡ് ഇക്കണോമിക് ഫോറം റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് ചെയ്യാനായി എന്നെ അയച്ചു.

that Nigeria was hosting for the first time.

നൈജീരിയ ആദ്യമായാണ് ഇതിന് ആതിഥ്യം വഹിക്കുന്നത്

But when we arrived, it was clear that there was only one story in town.

പക്ഷേ ഞങ്ങള്‍ എത്തിയപ്പോള്‍

ഒരൊറ്റ വാര്‍ത്ത മാത്രമേ അവിടെ റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട്‌ ചെയ്യാന്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളൂ

We put the government under pressure.

ആ പെണ്‍കുട്ടികളെ തിരികെ കൊണ്ടുവരാന്‍ നിങ്ങള്‍ എന്തു ചെയ്തുവെന്ന് ചോദിച്ച്

We asked tough questions about what they were doing

ഞങ്ങള്‍ ഗവണ്‍മെന്‍റിനെ സമ്മര്‍ദ്ദത്തിലാക്കി.

to bring these girls back.

Understandably,

വിചാരിച്ചത് പോലെ, ഞങ്ങളുടെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യലില്‍

they weren't too happy with our line of questioning,

അവര്‍ ഒട്ടും സംതൃപ്തരല്ലായിരുന്നു.

and let's just say we received our fair share of "alternative facts."

മാത്രമല്ല, "വളച്ചൊടിച്ച സത്യ"ത്തിന്‍റെ ഒരു ഭാഗം ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്കും കിട്ടി

(Laughter)

(ചിരിക്കുന്നു)

Influential Nigerians were telling us at the time

തെറ്റിദ്ധരിക്കപ്പെട്ട നൈജീരിയക്കാര്‍ തങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ഒന്നുമറിയില്ലെന്നും

that we were naïve,

അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ അവിടുത്തെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ

we didn't understand the political situation in Nigeria.

സാഹചര്യങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് അജ്ഞരാണെന്നും പറഞ്ഞു.

But they also told us

അതിനൊപ്പം അവര്‍ പറഞ്ഞു

that the story of the Chibok girls

ചിബോക്ക് പെണ്‍കുട്ടികളുടെ വാര്‍ത്ത‍ വെറും

was a hoax.

കെട്ടുകഥയാണെന്ന്.

Sadly, this hoax narrative has persisted,

വിഷമകരമായ വസ്തുത എന്തെന്നാല്‍

and there are still people in Nigeria today

ചിബോക്കില്‍ നിന്നും തട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടു പോകപ്പെട്ട പെണ്‍കുട്ടികളുടെ കഥ

who believe that the Chibok girls were never kidnapped.

വെറും കെട്ടുകഥയാണെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്ന നൈജീരിയക്കാര്‍ ഇന്നുമുണ്ട്.

Yet I was talking to people like these --

അതെ, നിരവധി ആള്‍ക്കാരോട് ഞങ്ങള്‍ സംസാരിച്ചു...,

devastated parents,

സര്‍വതും നശിച്ച അച്ഛനമ്മമാര്‍,

who told us that on the day Boko Haram kidnapped their daughters,

അവരുടെ പെണ്മക്കളെ ബോക്കോ ഹറാം തീവ്രവാദികള്‍ തട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടു പോയ ദിവസം,

they ran into the Sambisa Forest after the trucks carrying their daughters.

ആ ട്രക്കിനെ പിന്തുടര്‍ന്ന്, സാമ്പിസാ കാടിനുള്ളിലൂടെ അവര്‍ ഓടി,

They were armed with machetes, but they were forced to turn back

അവർ സായുധരായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും പിന്‍വാങ്ങാന്‍ നിര്‍ബന്ധിതരായി

because Boko Haram had guns.

കാരണം, തീവ്രവാദികളുടെ കയ്യില്‍ തോക്കുകളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

For two years, inevitably, the news agenda moved on,

രണ്ട് വര്‍ഷത്തോളം, ആ കള്ളവാര്‍ത്തകള്‍ നിലനിന്നു

and for two years,

രണ്ട് വര്‍ഷത്തോളം,

we didn't hear much about the Chibok girls.

നാം ചിബോക്കിലെ പെണ്‍കുട്ടികളെക്കുറിച്ച് കേട്ടില്ല!

Everyone presumed they were dead.

അവര്‍ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ടാകമെന്ന് ഏവരും കരുതി.

But in April last year,

പക്ഷേ, കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷം ഏപ്രിലില്‍,

I was able to obtain this video.

എനിക്ക് ഈ വീഡിയോ കിട്ടി

This is a still from the video

ഇത് ആ വീഡിയോയില്‍ നിന്നെടുത്ത ഒരു ചിത്രമാണ്

that Boko Haram filmed as a proof of life,

ബോക്കോ ഹറാം തീവ്രവാദികള്‍ ചിത്രീകരിച്ചത്,

and through a source, I obtained this video.

ഒരു വാര്‍ത്താ ഉറവിടത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് ഈ വീഡിയോ എനിക്ക് കിട്ടി

But before I could publish it,

പക്ഷേ, ഇത് പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കും മുന്‍പ്,

I had to travel to the northeast of Nigeria

വടക്കു-കിഴക്കന്‍ നൈജീരിയയിലേക്ക് എനിക്ക് സഞ്ചരിക്കണമായിരുന്നു,

to talk to the parents, to verify it.

ആ വീഡിയോയുടെ ആധികാരികത ഉറപ്പുവരുത്താന്‍

I didn't have to wait too long for confirmation.

അത് ഉറപ്പിക്കാന്‍ എനിക്ക് അധിക നേരം കാത്തുനില്‍ക്കേണ്ടി വന്നില്ല

One of the mothers, when she watched the video, told me

ആ വീഡിയോ കണ്ട ഒരമ്മ ഒരമ്മ എന്നോട് പറഞ്ഞു,

that if she could have reached into the laptop

അവര്‍ക്ക് ആ ലാപ്ടോപ്പിനുള്ളില്‍ കയറി

and pulled our her child from the laptop,

അവരുടെ മകളെ വലിച്ച് പുറത്തിടാന്‍ സാധിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍

she would have done so.

അവര്‍ അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്തേനെ....

For those of you who are parents, like myself, in the audience,

ഇവിടെ കൂടിയിരിക്കുന്നവരില്‍ എന്നെപ്പോലെ അച്ഛനമ്മമാരായവര്‍ക്ക്

you can only imagine the anguish

മാത്രമേ ആ അമ്മ അനുഭവിച്ച

that that mother felt.

മനോവേദന മനസിലാകുകയുള്ളു...

This video would go on to kick-start negotiation talks with Boko Haram.

ഈ വീഡിയോ തീവ്രവാദികളുമായുള്ള വിലപേശലുകള്‍ക്ക് തുടക്കം കുറിച്ചു

And a Nigerian senator told me that because of this video

ഒരു നൈജീരിയന്‍ സെനറ്റര്‍ പറഞ്ഞത്, ഈ വീഡിയോ കാരണമാണ്

they entered into those talks,

തങ്ങള്‍ ഒരു ചര്‍ച്ചയ്ക്ക് തയാറായത് എന്നാണ്!

because they had long presumed that the Chibok girls were dead.

പെണ്‍കുട്ടികളെല്ലാം മരിച്ചിരുന്നു എന്നാണ് ഇതുവരെയും അവര്‍ കരുതിയിരുന്നത്

Twenty-one girls were freed in October last year.

കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷം ഒക്ടോബറില്‍ 21 പെണ്‍കുട്ടികള്‍ മോചിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടു

Sadly, nearly 200 of them still remain missing.

പക്ഷേ ഇരുനൂറോളം പേരെ ഇപ്പോഴും കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടില്ല എന്നത് ദുഖകരമാണ്

I must confess that I have not been a dispassionate observer

ഈ വാര്‍ത്ത‍ റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട്‌ ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ നിര്‍വികാരയായ വെറുമൊരു നിരീക്ഷകയായല്ല

covering this story.

ഞാന്‍ നില കൊണ്ടത്

I am furious when I think about the wasted opportunities

എനിക്ക് ദേഷ്യമുണ്ട്, ആ പെണ്‍കുട്ടികളെ രക്ഷപെടുത്താന്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന

to rescue these girls.

അവസരങ്ങള്‍ നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടത് ഓര്‍ക്കുമ്പോഴൊക്കെ

I am furious when I think about what the parents have told me,

ആ പെണ്‍കുട്ടികള്‍ പണവും സ്വാധീനവുമുള്ളവരുടെ മക്കളായിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍

that if these were daughters of the rich and the powerful,

ഗവണ്മെന്‍റ് കുറച്ചുകൂടി നേരത്തേ അവരെ കണ്ടെത്തിയേനെ എന്ന് ആ അച്ഛനമ്മമാര്‍

they would have been found much earlier.

വിലപിച്ചത് കേട്ടപ്പോഴും എനിക്ക് ദേഷ്യം തോന്നി

And I am furious

ഞാന്‍ രോഷകുലയാണ് ,

that the hoax narrative,

ആ തെറ്റിദ്ധാരണ പരത്തിയ കെട്ടുകഥ,

I firmly believe,

അവരെ രക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിന്

caused a delay;

വലിയ താമസം ഉണ്ടാകാന്‍ കാരണമായെന്ന്

it was part of the reason for the delay in their return.

ഞാന്‍ ഉറച്ച് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു

This illustrates to me the deadly danger of fake news.

ഈ സംഭവം കാട്ടിത്തരുന്നത് വ്യാജ വാര്‍ത്തകളുടെ മാരകമായ അപകടങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചാണ്

So what can we do about it?

നമുക്കിതില്‍ എന്ത് ചെയ്യാന്‍ കഴിയും?

There are some very smart people,

ചിലരുണ്ട്, സമര്‍ത്ഥരായ ആള്‍ക്കാര്‍

smart engineers at Google and Facebook,

ഗൂഗിളിലെയും ഫെയിസ്ബുക്കിലെയും ബുദ്ധിമാന്മാരായ എഞ്ചിനീയര്‍മാര്‍

who are trying to use technology to stop the spread of fake news.

തെറ്റായ വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍ പടരുന്നത് തടയാന്‍ സാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

But beyond that, I think everybody here -- you and I --

അതിനപ്പുറം, നിങ്ങളും ഞാനും അടങ്ങുന്ന സമൂഹത്തിന്

we have a role to play in that.

ഇതില്‍ വ്യക്തമായ കടമകള്‍ നിര്‍വഹിക്കാനുണ്ട്

We are the ones who share the content.

നാമാണ് വിവരങ്ങള്‍ കൈമാറ്റം ചെയ്യുന്നത്

We are the ones who share the stories online.

നാം ഓരോരുത്തരുമാണ് വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍ ഓണ്‍ലൈന്‍ ആയി പങ്കു വയ്ക്കുന്നത്

In this day and age, we're all publishers,

ഇക്കാലത്ത് നാം ഓരോരുത്തരും പ്രസാധകരാണ്

and we have responsibility.

അതുകൊണ്ട്തന്നെ നമുക്കൊരു ഉത്തരവാദിത്തമുണ്ട്

In my job as a journalist,

ഒരു മാധ്യമപ്രവര്‍ത്തകയായ ഞാന്‍

I check, I verify.

വിവരങ്ങള്‍ പരിശോധിക്കും, ശരിയെന്ന് ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തും.

I trust my gut, but I ask tough questions.

എനിക്കെന്നെ വിശ്വാസമാണ്, പക്ഷേ ഞാന്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ ചോദിക്കുന്നു.

Why is this person telling me this story?

എന്തിനാണ് ഇയാള്‍ എന്നോട് ഈ സംഭവം വിവരിക്കുന്നത്?

What do they have to gain by sharing this information?

ഈ വിവരം കൈമാറുന്നത് കൊണ്ട് എന്ത് നേട്ടമാണ് അവര്‍ക്കുണ്ടാവുക?

Do they have a hidden agenda?

അവര്‍ക്കെന്തെങ്കിലും ദുരുദ്ദേശങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടോ?

I really believe that we must all start to ask tougher questions

ഓണ്‍ലൈന്‍ ആയി ലഭിക്കുന്ന വിവരങ്ങളോടും നാമെല്ലാവരും ഉറപ്പായും

ഇത്തരത്തില്‍ ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ ചോദിക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങണം

of information that we discover online.

Research shows that some of us don't even read beyond headlines

ഗവേഷണങ്ങള്‍ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്, വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍ ഷെയര്‍ ചെയ്യുന്നതിന് മുന്‍പ്

പലരും അതിന്‍റെ തലക്കെട്ടിനപ്പുറം വായിക്കാറില്ല എന്നതാണ്

before we share stories.

Who here has done that?

ഇവിടിരിക്കുന്ന ആരൊക്കെ അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്?

I know I have.

എനിക്കറിയാം, ഞാന്‍ ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.

But what if

പക്ഷേ, ഇത്തരത്തില്‍ നാം കണ്ടുപിടിക്കുന്ന

വിവരങ്ങള്‍ മുഖവിലയ്ക്ക് എടുക്കാതിരുന്നാല്‍ എന്താകും...?

we stopped taking information that we discover at face value?

What if we stop to think about the consequence

നാം കൈമാറുന്ന വിവരം മൂലം ഉണ്ടായേക്കാവുന്ന

of the information that we pass on

അക്രമങ്ങളെയും വിദ്വേഷത്തയും കുറിച്ച്

and its potential to incite violence or hatred?

നാം ചിന്തിക്കാതിരുന്നാല്‍ എന്താകും സ്ഥിതി...?

What if we stop to think about the real-life consequences

നാം ഷെയര്‍ ചെയ്യുന്ന വിവരങ്ങള്‍ മൂലം യഥാര്‍ത്ഥ ജീവിതത്തില്‍

of the information that we share?

ഉണ്ടായേക്കാവുന്ന പ്രത്യാഘാതങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് നാം ചിന്തിക്കതിരുന്നാല്‍ എന്താകും...?
