I want to tell you a story about a girl.

मैं आपको एक लड़की की कहानी सुनाना चाहती हूँ |

But I can't tell you her real name.

पर मैं आपको उसका असली नाम नही बता सकती |

So let's just call her Hadiza.

तो चलो हम उसे हदीज़ा बुलाते है |

Hadiza is 20.

हदीज़ा 20 साल की है |

She's shy,

वह शर्मीली है,

but she has a beautiful smile that lights up her face.

पर उसकी मुस्कुराहट बहुत खूबसूरत है, जो उसके चेहरे पर नूर लाती है |

But she's in constant pain.

पर वह हर दम दर्द में है |

And she will likely be on medication for the rest of her life.

और संभावना है कि उसे अपनी बाकी ज़िंदगी दवाइयों के सहारे बितानी पड़ेगी |

Do you want to know why?

जानते हैं क्यों ?

Hadiza is a Chibok girl,

हदीज़ा चिबॉक की लड़की है,

and on April 14, 2014, she was kidnapped

और 14 अप्रैल, 2014 को, बोको हराम आतंकवादियों ने

by Boko Haram terrorists.

उसका अपहरण किया था |

She managed to escape, though,

हालांकि वह वहाँ से बचकर निकल पाई,

by jumping off the truck that was carrying the girls.

लड़कियों से भरी उस ट्रक में से कूदकर |

But when she landed, she broke both her legs,

पर जब वह ज़मीन पर उतरी, तब उसके दोनो पैर टूट गए

and she had to crawl on her tummy to hide in the bushes.

और उसे अपने पेट के बल रेंगना पड़ा झाड़ियों में छुपने के लिए |

She told me she was terrified that Boko Haram would come back for her.

उसने मुझे बताया कि उसे बहुत डर था कि बोको हराम उसे फिर से लेकर जाएँगे |

She was one of 57 girls who would escape by jumping off trucks that day.

वह उन 57 लड़कियों में से एक थी, जो उस दिन ट्रक से कूदकर बच निकली थी |

This story, quite rightly, caused ripples

ज़ाहिर सी बात है कि यह कहानी दुनिया भर में

around the world.

हलचल मचा देती है |

People like Michelle Obama, Malala and others

मिशेल ओबामा, मलाला, आदि जैसे लोगों ने इसके विरोध में

lent their voices in protest,

अपनी आवाज़ उठाई हैं

and at about the same time -- I was living in London at the time --

और उस ही वक्त – मैं तब लंडन में रह रही थी –

I was sent from London to Abuja to cover the World Economic Forum

मुझे लंडन से अबूजा भेज दिया गया था, विश्‍व र्थिक मंच के बारे में लिखने के लिये

that Nigeria was hosting for the first time.

जो पहली बार नाइजीरिया में आयोजित था |

But when we arrived, it was clear that there was only one story in town.

पर जब हम वहाँ आए तब यह बात साफ थी कि शहर में सिर्फ़ एक ही कहानी थी

We put the government under pressure.

हमने सरकार पर दबाव डाला |

We asked tough questions about what they were doing

हमने उनसे बहुत कठिन सवाल पूछे, कि वे इन लड़कियों को

to bring these girls back.

वापस लाने के लए क्या कर रहे थे

Understandably,

ज़ाहिर है,

they weren't too happy with our line of questioning,

कि वे हमारे सवालों से खुश नही थे

and let's just say we received our fair share of "alternative facts."

और बस इतना जान लीजिए कि हमे हमारे हिस्से के "अन्य तथ्य" मिले |

Influential Nigerians were telling us at the time

उस वक्त नाइजीरिया के प्रभावशाली वासी हमे बता रहे थे

that we were naïve,

कि हम भोले हैं,

we didn't understand the political situation in Nigeria.

हम नाइजीरिया की राजनीतिक स्थिती को नही समझते थे,

But they also told us

पर उन्होंने हमे यह भी बताया,

that the story of the Chibok girls

कि चिबॉक के लड़कियों की कहानी

was a hoax.

एक फ़रेब था |

Sadly, this hoax narrative has persisted,

अफसोस की बात है, कि यह फ़रेब की कहानी ज़िंदा रही है ,

and there are still people in Nigeria today

और आज भी नाइजीरिया में लोग हैं

who believe that the Chibok girls were never kidnapped.

जिनका मानना है कि चिबॉक की लड़कियाँ कभी अगवा ही नही हुई

Yet I was talking to people like these --

फिर भी मैं इन जैसे लोगों से बात कर रही थी –

devastated parents,

माँ-बाप जिनकी ज़िंदगी तबाह हो गई,

who told us that on the day Boko Haram kidnapped their daughters,

जिन्होंने हमे बताया कि जिस दिन बोको हराम ने उनकी बेटियों का अपहरण किया था,

they ran into the Sambisa Forest after the trucks carrying their daughters.

वे अपनी लड़कियों से भारी उस ट्रक के पीछे भागते-भागते संबोसिया वन में जा पहुँचे

They were armed with machetes, but they were forced to turn back

वे अपने साथ तलवार-चाकू लाए थे, पर उन्हें वापस मुड़ना पड़ा

because Boko Haram had guns.

क्योंकि बोको हराम के पास बंदूकें थी

For two years, inevitably, the news agenda moved on,

अनिवार्य रूप से, अगले 2 सालों के लिए समाचारों की कार्यसूची आगे बढ़ती गई

and for two years,

और दो सालों में,

we didn't hear much about the Chibok girls.

हमने चिबॉक की लड़कियों के बारे में ज़्यादा नही सुना |

Everyone presumed they were dead.

सबने यही समझ लिया कि वे सब मर चुकी हैं

But in April last year,

पर पिछले साल, अप्रैल में,

I was able to obtain this video.

मैं एक वीडियो को पाने में कामयाब हुई |

This is a still from the video

यह तस्वीर उस वीडियो में से है

that Boko Haram filmed as a proof of life,

जिसे बोको हराम ने उनके जीवित रहने के सबूत के लिए बनाया

and through a source, I obtained this video.

और मुझे यह वीडियो एक सूत्र से प्राप्त हुआ |

But before I could publish it,

पर उसे प्रकाशित करने से पूर्व,

I had to travel to the northeast of Nigeria

मुझे नाइजीरिया के पूर्वोत्तर भाग तक सफ़र करना पड़ा

to talk to the parents, to verify it.

उन माँ-बापों से बात करने के लिए, उसकी पुष्टि के लिए

I didn't have to wait too long for confirmation.

मुझे उनका पुष्टिकरण पाने के लिए ज़्यादा इंतज़ार नही करना पड़ा |

One of the mothers, when she watched the video, told me

उन में से एक माँ ने वीडियो देखकर मुझसे कहा

that if she could have reached into the laptop

क़ि अगर वह उस लॅपटॉप के अंदर घुस सकती

and pulled our her child from the laptop,

और अपनी बच्ची को उससे निकाल सकती,

she would have done so.

तो उसने ऐसा किया होता |

For those of you who are parents, like myself, in the audience,

यहाँ मौजूद दर्शकों में से जो भी माता या पिता हैं,

you can only imagine the anguish

आप सिर्फ़ उस तकलीफ़ की कल्पना कर सकते हैं,

that that mother felt.

जो उस माँ ने महसूस की |

This video would go on to kick-start negotiation talks with Boko Haram.

इस वीडियो में आगे बोको हराम के साथ की गई समझौते की बातें दिखाई देती हैं

And a Nigerian senator told me that because of this video

और नाइजीरिया के राज्यसभा के एक मंत्री ने मुझे बताया कि इस वीडियो के कारण

they entered into those talks,

वे इन बातों में पड़े,

because they had long presumed that the Chibok girls were dead.

क्योंकि उन्होनें कब का मान लिया था कि वह चिबॉक की लड़कियाँ मर चुकी हैं

Twenty-one girls were freed in October last year.

पिछले साल अक्टूबर में 21 लड़कियों को आज़ाद किया गया |

Sadly, nearly 200 of them still remain missing.

अफ़सोस की बात यह है, कि उन में से लगभग 200 आज भी लापता हैं

I must confess that I have not been a dispassionate observer

मुझे यह मानना पड़ेगा कि मैं इस कहानी को लेकर सिर्फ़ एक भावनाहीन दर्शक

covering this story.

नही रही हूँ

I am furious when I think about the wasted opportunities

मुझे बहुत गुस्सा आता है जब मैं उन लड़कियों को बचाने के गवाए हुए मौकों का

to rescue these girls.

विचार करती हूँ

I am furious when I think about what the parents have told me,

बहुत गुस्सा आता है मुझे उन बातों को सोचकर जो उन माँ-बापों ने मुझे बताई,

that if these were daughters of the rich and the powerful,

कि अगर यह अमीरों या ताकतवर लोगों की बेटियाँ होती,

they would have been found much earlier.

तो वह बहुत पहले मिल जाती

And I am furious

और मैं बहुत गुस्सा हूँ

that the hoax narrative,

कि उस फ़रेब की कहानी ने,

I firmly believe,

मुझे पूरा यकीन है,

caused a delay;

यह देरी लाई ;

it was part of the reason for the delay in their return.

यह उस वजह का हिस्सा थी जिससे उन लड़कियों की वापसी में देर हुई

This illustrates to me the deadly danger of fake news.

यह बात मुझे दर्शाती है कि नकली खबरें कितनी ख़तरनाक हो सकती हैं

So what can we do about it?

इसपर में हम क्या कर सकते हैं?

There are some very smart people,

कुछ बहुत होशियार लोग हैं,

smart engineers at Google and Facebook,

गूगल और फ़ेसबुक के चतुर इंजीनियर,

who are trying to use technology to stop the spread of fake news.

जो टेक्नोलॉजी के उपयोग से कोशिश कर रहे हैं नकली खबरों को फैलने से रोकने की

But beyond that, I think everybody here -- you and I --

पर इसके अलावा, मुझे लगता यहाँ मौजूद हर कोई – आप और मैं –

we have a role to play in that.

हम सब इसमें शामिल हो सकते हैं

We are the ones who share the content.

हम ही है जो बातों को बाँटते हैं

We are the ones who share the stories online.

हम ही हैं जो कहानियों को ऑनलाइन बाँटते हैं

In this day and age, we're all publishers,

आज के ज़माने में, हम सब प्रकाशक हैं,

and we have responsibility.

और हम पर ज़िम्मेदारी है

In my job as a journalist,

मेरी पत्रकार की नौकरी में,

I check, I verify.

मैं जाँचती हूँ, बातों की पुष्टि करती हूँ |

I trust my gut, but I ask tough questions.

मैं अपने दिल की आवाज़ सुनती हूँ, पर मैं मुश्किल सवाल पूछती हूँ |

Why is this person telling me this story?

यह इंसान मुझे यह कहानी क्यों बता रहा है ?

What do they have to gain by sharing this information?

यह जानकारी बाँटने से उनका क्या फायदा होगा ?

Do they have a hidden agenda?

क्या उनकी कोई छुपी हुई योजना है ?

I really believe that we must all start to ask tougher questions

मुझे सच में ऐसा लगता है कि हम सब को और भी मुश्किल सवाल पूछना शुरू करना चाहिए

of information that we discover online.

उस जानकारी के बारे में जो हमें ऑनलाइन पता चलती है

Research shows that some of us don't even read beyond headlines

एक शोध के अनुसार, हम में से कुछ लोग कहानियाँ बाँटने से पहले

before we share stories.

हेडलाइन्स के आगे भी नही पढ़ते

Who here has done that?

यहाँ किसने ऐसा किया है ?

I know I have.

मुझे पता है कि मैने किया है

But what if

लेकिन अगर हम

we stopped taking information that we discover at face value?

पाई हुई जानकारी को उसके प्रदर्शित रूप से न देखें, तो?

What if we stop to think about the consequence

अगर हमने ज़रा रुककर हमारे द्वारा बाँटी गई जानकारी के परिणाम,

of the information that we pass on

व उसके हिंसा और घृणा पैदा करने की

and its potential to incite violence or hatred?

क्षमता के बारे में सोचा, तो ?

What if we stop to think about the real-life consequences

अगर हम ज़रा रुककर हमारे द्वारा बाँटी जा रही जानकारी के असली ज़िन्दगीयों पर होने वाले

of the information that we share?

परिणामों के बारे में सोचने लगे, तो ?
