You know, I didn't set out to be a parenting expert.

There's a certain style of parenting these days

I guess what I'm saying is,

When we raise kids this way,

because Lord knows, in raising my two teenagers,

I've had these tendencies myself,

our kids end up leading a kind of checklisted childhood.

And here's what the checklisted childhood looks like.

We keep them safe and sound

But not just the grades, the scores,

and not just the grades and scores, but the accolades and the awards

and the sports, the activities, the leadership.

လှုပ်ရှားမှုတွေ၊ ခေါင်းဆောင်တွေ ဖြစ်စေချင်တယ်။

We tell our kids, don't just join a club,

ကလေးတွေကို ကလပ်ထဲ ပါဝင်ရန် မဟုတ်ဘဲ

start a club, because colleges want to see that.

ကောလိပ်တွေ လိုချင်သလို ကလပ်စတင်ရန် ပြောကြတယ်။

And check the box for community service.

I mean, show the colleges you care about others.

And all of this is done to some hoped-for degree of perfection.

We expect our kids to perform at a level of perfection

And then with our kids, our precious kids,

we spend so much time nudging,

And here's what it feels like to be a kid in this checklisted childhood.

First of all, there's no time for free play.

There's no room in the afternoons,

because everything has to be enriching, we think.

It's as if every piece of homework, every quiz, every activity

is a make-or-break moment for this future we have in mind for them,

and we absolve them of helping out around the house,

is their homework and their grades.

And they see in our faces

that their very worth,

comes from A's.

And then we walk alongside them

and offer clucking praise like a trainer at the Westminster Dog Show --

coaxing them to just jump a little higher and soar a little farther,

day after day after day.

And when they get to high school,

they don't say, "Well, what might I be interested in studying

or doing as an activity?"

They go to counselors and they say,

"What do I need to do to get into the right college?"

And then, when the grades start to roll in in high school,

and they're getting some B's,

or God forbid some C's,

they frantically text their friends

And our kids,

regardless of where they end up at the end of high school,

they're breathless.

They're brittle.

They're a little old before their time,

wishing the grown-ups in their lives had said, "What you've done is enough,

this effort you've put forth in childhood is enough."

And they're withering now under high rates of anxiety and depression

and some of them are wondering,

Well, we parents,

we parents are pretty sure it's all worth it.

We seem to behave --

it's like we literally think they will have no future

if they don't get into one of these tiny set of colleges or careers

we have in mind for them.

Or maybe, maybe, we're just afraid

they won't have a future we can brag about

But if you look at what we've done,

And so with our overhelp,

then they have to do a whole lot more of the thinking, planning, deciding,

doing, hoping, coping, trial and error,

dreaming and experiencing of life

for themselves.

Now, am I saying

ကလေးတိုင်းဟာ ကြိုးစား လုပ်ကိုင်ကြသူတွေပါ၊

every kid is hard-working and motivated

သူတို့ လုပ်ချင်တာကို သိကြတယ်၊ မိဘတွေဘက်မှ ပါဝင်ရန်

and doesn't need a parent's involvement or interest in their lives,

သူတို့ဘဝကို စိတ်ဝင်စားရန် မလိုဘူး၊ ကျွန်မတို့ နောက်ဆုတ်ပေးလျက်

and we should just back off and let go?

သူတို့ဘာသာ သွားပေစေ လွှတ်ပေးလိုက်ရမလား။

Hell no.

That is not what I'm saying.

ကျွန်မ ပြောနေတာ အဲဒီလို မဟုတ်ပါ။

What I'm saying is, when we treat grades and scores and accolades and awards

ကျွန်မတို့က အဆင့်တွေ၊ အမှတ်တွေ၊ ဂုဏ်ပြုလွှာတွေနဲ့ ဆုတွေကို ကလေးဘဝရဲ့

as the purpose of childhood,

ရည်ရွယ်ချက် အဖြစ် ခံယူကြခြင်းဖြင့်၊

all in furtherance of some hoped-for admission to a tiny number of colleges

or entrance to a small number of careers,

And even though we might help them achieve some short-term wins

by overhelping --

and far more concerned that they have the habits, the mindset, the skill set,

the wellness, to be successful wherever they go.

What I'm saying is,

our kids need us to be a little less obsessed with grades and scores

and a whole lot more interested

in childhood providing a foundation for their success

But really, here's why.

The longest longitudinal study of humans ever conducted

ပြုလုပ်ခဲ့ဘူးသမျှ လူသားတွေဆိုင်ရာ အရှည်ကြာဆုံး သုတေသနက

is called the Harvard Grant Study.

Harvard Grant Study ဆိုတဲ့ဟာပါ။

It found that professional success in life,

ဘဝထဲက အောင်မြင်မှုဟာ၊ ကျွန်မတို့ ကလေးတွေအတွက်

which is what we want for our kids,

ကျွန်မတို့ လိုချင်ကြတဲ့ အချက်ဟာ၊

that professional success in life comes from having done chores as a kid,

ကျွမ်းကျင်သူ အဖြစ် ဘဝထဲ အောင်မြင်ဖို့ ဆိုတာက အိမ်မှုကိစ္စတွေမှ လာတယ်၊

and the earlier you started, the better,

အဲဒါကို စောပြီး စနိုင်ရင် ပိုကောင်းတယ်၊

that a roll-up-your-sleeves- and-pitch-in mindset,

အင်္ကျီလက်ကို မတင်ရန် အသင့်ရှိတဲ့ စိတ်ထားဟာ၊

a mindset that says, there's some unpleasant work,

someone's got to do it, it might as well be me,

a mindset that says,

I will contribute my effort to the betterment of the whole,

that that's what gets you ahead in the workplace.

Now, we all know this. You know this.

We all know this, and yet, in the checklisted childhood,

we absolve our kids of doing the work of chores around the house,

and then they end up as young adults in the workplace

still waiting for a checklist,

but it doesn't exist,

and more importantly, lacking the impulse, the instinct

to roll up their sleeves and pitch in

and look around and wonder, how can I be useful to my colleagues?

How can I anticipate a few steps ahead to what my boss might need?

A second very important finding from the Harvard Grant Study

said that happiness in life

comes from love,

ချစ်ချင်းမေတ္တာမှ လာတယ်တဲ့၊

not love of work,

အလုပ်ကို မြတ်နိုးမှ မဟုတ်ပါ၊

love of humans:

လူသားအချင်းချင်းရဲ့ မေတ္တာမှပါ-

our spouse, our partner, our friends, our family.

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ ခင်ပွန်း၊ ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ လုပ်ဖေါ်၊ မိတ်ဆွေနဲ့ မိသားစုမှပါ။

So childhood needs to teach our kids how to love,

ဒီတော့ ကလေးဘဝဟာ ကျွန်မတို့ ကလေးတွေကို ချစ်ချင်းမေတ္တာအကြောင်း သင်ပေးရမယ်၊

and they can't love others if they don't first love themselves,

သူတို့ဟာ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို မချစ်ဘဲနဲ့ အခြားသူတွေ မချစ်နိုင်ကြပါ၊

and they won't love themselves if we can't offer them unconditional love.

instead of being obsessed with grades and scores

when our precious offspring come home from school,

or we come home from work,

ကျွန်မတို့ အလုပ်မှအိမ်ပြန်လာရင်

we need to close our technology, put away our phones,

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ စက်ပစ္စည်းတွေကို ပိတ်လိုက်ကာ

and look them in the eye

သူတို့နဲ့ မျက်နှာချင်းဆိုင်

and let them see the joy that fills our faces

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ စိတ်ချမ်းမြေ့မှုကို ပြပါ သတို့လည်း မြင်ပါစေ၊

when we see our child for the first time in a few hours.

ကိုယ့်ရင်သွေးကို နာရီအတော်ကြာပြီး ပြန်မြင်တွေ့လိုက်ရတာကိုး။

And then we have to say,

အဲဒီနောက်မှာ ကျွန်မတို့ ပြောရမှာက၊

"How was your day?

“ဒီနေ့ မင်းဘယ်လိုလဲ။”

What did you like about today?"

“ဒီနေ့ မင်း သဘောကျတာက ဘာများလဲ။“

And when your teenage daughter says, "Lunch," like mine did,

ရှင်တို့ရဲ့ ဆယ်ကျော်သက် သမီးက၊ ကျွန်မ သမီးပြောတတ်သလို၊ “နေ့လယ်စာ” ဆိုပြီး

and I want to hear about the math test,

ဖြေကြားရင်၊ ကိုယ်သိချင်တာက နေ့လယ်စာ မဟုတ်ဘဲ

not lunch,

သင်္ချာ စစ်ဆေးမှု ဖြစ်ပေမဲ့၊

you have to still take an interest in lunch.

ကျွန်မဟာ နေ့လယ်စာ အကြောင်းကို စိတ်ဝင်စားမေးမြန်းရမယ်။

You gotta say, "What was great about lunch today?"

“နေ့လယ်စာထဲ ကောင်းခဲ့တာ ဘာများလဲ။“ ဆိုပြီး မေးသင့်တယ်။

They need to know they matter to us as humans,

သူတို့ကို ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ GPA ကြောင့်မဟုတ်ဘဲလူသားတွေအဖြစ်

not because of their GPA.

စိတ်ဝင်စားတာ သိချင်တာ သူတို့ သိရမယ်။

All right, so you're thinking, chores and love,

ရှင်တို့က အိမ်မှုကိစ္စနဲ့ ချစ်ခြင်းကို

that sounds all well and good, but give me a break.

နားလည်ပါပြီ၊ ခဏနေပါဦး။

The colleges want to see top scores and grades

ကောလိပ်တွေက အဆင့်တွေ၊ အမှတ်တွေ၊ ဂုဏ်ပြုလွှာတွေနဲ့

and accolades and awards, and I'm going to tell you, sort of.

ဆုတွေကို ကြည့်ချင်ကြတယ်ဆိုတော့၊ ကျွန်မ ဘယ်လို ဖြေပေးမလဲ။

The very biggest brand-name schools are asking that of our young adults,

နာမည်ကြီး ကျောင်းတွေက လူငယ်များထံမှ အဲဒါတွေကို တောင်းကြမှာ အမှန်ပါပဲ။

but here's the good news.

ကောင်းတဲ့ သတင်းတွေ ရှိပါတယ်။

Contrary to what the college rankings racket would have us believe --

ကောလိပ်တွေရဲ့ အဆင့်တွေကို ကြည့်ပြီး ကျွန်မတို့ ယုံကြည်သင့်တာ ဘယ်လိုပဲရှိရှိ-

you don't have to go to one of the biggest brand name schools

ဘဝထဲတွင် စိတ်ချမ်းသာရန်၊ အောင်မြင်ရန်၊ ရှင်တို့ဟာ နာမည်ကြီး

to be happy and successful in life.

ကျောင်းတွေကိုမှ တက်ရန် မလိုအပ်ပါဘူး၊

Happy and successful people went to state school,

စိတ်ချမ်းသာကာ အောင်မြင်ကြသူတို့ဟာ အစိုးရကျောင်းကို တက်ကြတယ်၊

went to a small college no one has heard of,

ဘယ်သူမှာမှ မကြားဖူးတဲ့ ကောလိပ် ကျောင်း တက်တယ်၊

went to community college,

ရပ်ကွက်ထဲက ကောလိပ်ကို သွားကြတယ်၊

went to a college over here and flunked out.

တစ်နေရာရာရှိ ကောလိပ်ကို တက်ပြီး စာမေးပွဲကျတယ်။

The evidence is in this room, is in our communities,

ဒီခန်းမ သက်သေထူပြလိုက်တဲ့ အတိုင်း ကျွန်မတို့ ရပ်ကွက်ထဲမှာပါ

that this is the truth.

အမှန်တရား ရှိနိုင်ပါတယ်။

And if we could widen our blinders

and be willing to look at a few more colleges,

တိုးချဲ့လိုက်လျက် ရှိကြသေးတဲ့ ကောလိပ်တွေကို

maybe remove our own egos from the equation,

ကြည့်ကြမယ်ဆိုရင်၊ ညီမျှခြင်းထဲမှ ကိုယ့်အတ္တစိတ်ကို ဖယ်ရှားနိုင်မယ်ဆိုရင်၊

we could accept and embrace this truth and then realize,

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ အဲဒီအမှန်တရားကို လက်ခံလျက် နားလည်လာကြမှာက၊

it is hardly the end of the world

ကျွန်မတို့ ကလေးတွေဟာ အဲဒီနာမည်ကြီး

if our kids don't go to one of those big brand-name schools.

ကောလိပ် မသွားဖြစ်ရင် ကမ္ဘာကြီး ပျက်ပြုန်းသွားမှာ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

And more importantly,

ဒီထက် ပိုပြီး အရေးကြီးတာက၊

if their childhood has not been lived according to a tyrannical checklist

သူတို့ရဲ့ ကလေးဘဝဟာ စာရင်းရှည်ဖြင့် ညှင်းပန်းခံခဲ့ရတာ မဟုတ်ခဲ့ရင်၊

then when they get to college,

သူတို့ဟာ ကောလိပ် ရောက်တဲ့အခါမှာ၊

whichever one it is,

ဘယ်ကောလိပ်ပဲ ဖြစ်ဖြစ်ပါ၊

well, they'll have gone there on their own volition,

သူတို့ဟာ အဲဒီကို သူတို့ရဲ့ ရွေးချယ်မှုအရ တက်လာတဲ့ဆိုရင်၊

fueled by their own desire,

သူတို့ကိုယ်တိုင်ရဲ့ တောင့်တချက်နှင့်အညီ ရောက်လာပါက၊

capable and ready to thrive there.

အဲဒီမှာ ရပ်တည်နိုင်စွမ်း ကြိုးပမ်းနိုင်စွမ်း ရှိကြမှာပါ။

I have to admit something to you.

ကျွန်မ ဝန်ခံ ပြောချင်တာ တစ်ခု ရှိတယ်။

I've got two kids I mentioned, Sawyer and Avery.

ကျွန်မ ပြောခဲ့သလို Sawyer နဲ့ Avery ဆိုတဲ့ ကလေးနှစ်ဦး ရှိပါတယ်။

They're teenagers.

သူတို့ဟာ ဆယ်ကျော်အရွယ်တွေပါ။

And once upon a time,

I think I was treating my Sawyer and Avery

like little bonsai trees --

that I was going to carefully clip and prune

and shape into some perfect form of a human

တကယ့်ကို တော်ကြမယ့် လူသားပုံစံကို ရိုက်သွင်းပေးဖို့အတွက်၊

that might just be perfect enough to warrant them admission

အဆင့်မြင့် နာမည်ကြီး ကောလိပ် တစ်ခုခုမှာ

to one of the most highly selective colleges.

သူတို့ကို လက်ခံဖြစ်လောက်အောင် တော်ဖို့အတွက်ပေါ့လေ။

But I've come to realize, after working with thousands of other people's kids --

ဒါပေမဲ့၊ အခြားသူတွေရဲ့ ကလေး ထောင်ချီနဲ့ လုပ်ကိုင်ခဲ့ရတဲ့ နောက်မှာ သိလိုက်တာက --

and raising two kids of my own,

my kids aren't bonsai trees.

They're wildflowers

သူတို့ဟာ အလေ့ကျပေါက်တဲ့ ပန်းတွေပါ၊

of an unknown genus and species --

ဘယ်သူမှ မသိကြတဲ့ ပါရမီတွေနဲ့ မျိုးစိတ်တွေပါ၊

and it's my job to provide a nourishing environment,

to strengthen them through chores

and to love them so they can love others and receive love

and the college, the major, the career,

ကောလိပ်ကျောင်း၊ ရွေးချယ်မယ့် ဘာသာရပ်၊ ရာထူး ဆိုတာတွေကို

that's up to them.

သူတို့ဘာသာသူတို့ ရွေးကြမှာပါ။

My job is not to make them become what I would have them become,

ကျွန်မအလုပ်က ကျွန်မ ဖြစ်ချင်တာမျိုး သူတို့ကို လုပ်ပစ်ရန် မဟုတ်ဘဲ၊

but to support them in becoming their glorious selves.

သူတို့ ကိုယ်တိုင် ဖြစ်ချင်လိုကြတဲ့ ကြည်နူးဖွယ်ရာကို ရယူရန် အားပေးဖို့ပါ။
