I was here four years ago,

So, this whole event has been an elaborate build-up

Al Gore spoke at the TED conference I spoke at four years ago

and talked about the climate crisis.

And I referenced that at the end of my last talk.

So I want to pick up from there

So, as I was saying --

You see, he's right.

I mean, there is a major climate crisis, obviously,

and I think if people don't believe it, they should get out more.

But I believe there is a second climate crisis,

which is as severe,

which has the same origins,

and that we have to deal with with the same urgency.

وە دەبێت بە هەمان خێرایی ئەوی پێشو مامەڵەی لەگەڵدا بکەین

And you may say, by the way,

لەوانەیە بڵێن، تەماشاکەن، من باشم

"Look, I'm good.

I have one climate crisis, I don't really need the second one."

But this is a crisis of, not natural resources --

بەڵام ئەم قەیرانەیان، قەیرانێکی سروشتکرد نی یە

بڕوام بەوەیە کە

though I believe that's true --

but a crisis of human resources.

ئەم قەیرانەیان قەیرانێکی دەستکردە

I believe fundamentally,

..من بە تەواوی بڕوام وایە

as many speakers have said during the past few days,

هەر وەک چون زۆربەی قسەکەرەکانی ئەم چەند ڕۆژەی ڕابردوو دەیانگوت

کە ئێمە زۆر بە دەگمەن

that we make very poor use of our talents.

بەهرەکانمان بەکار دێنین

Very many people go through their whole lives

زۆربەی خەڵکی بە درێژایی ژیانیان

having no real sense of what their talents may be,

or if they have any to speak of.

نازانن ئەسڵەن هەیانە یان نا، تا باسی بکەن

I meet all kinds of people

who don't think they're really good at anything.

کە نازانن ئەوان لە چ جۆرە کارێکدا باشن

Actually, I kind of divide the world into two groups now.

لە ڕاستیدا، من جیهانم دابەش کردووە بۆ دوو دەستە

Jeremy Bentham, the great utilitarian philosopher,

جێرمی بێنسام) کە فەیلەسوفێکی سود بەخشی گەورە بوو)

once spiked this argument.

جارێک ئەم باسەی وروژاند

He said, "There are two types of people in this world:

ئەو وتی: لە جیهاندا دوو جۆر مرۆڤ هەیە

those who divide the world into two types

بەشێکیان ئەوانەن کە جیهانیان دابەش کردووە بۆ دوو جۆر

and those who do not."

بەشێکێکشیان ئەوانەن کە ئەوەیان نەکردووە

Well, I do.

من لەو جۆرەم کە جیهانم دابەش کردووە

I meet all kinds of people who don't enjoy what they do.

چاوم بە هەموو جۆرە مرٶڤێک کەوتووە

کە چیژ لە کارەکانیان نابینن

They simply go through their lives getting on with it.

ئەوان ژیان دەگوزەرێنن

وە لەگەڵ کارەکانیاندا بەردەوام دەبن

They get no great pleasure from what they do.

چیژیش لە کارەکانیان نابینن

They endure it rather than enjoy it,

ئەوان تەنها ئارام دەگرن، وەک لەوەی چیژ لە ژیانیان ببینن

and wait for the weekend.

وە چاوەڕێی کۆتایی هەفتە دەکەن

But I also meet people

بەڵام بەو کەسانەش گەیشتوم کە

who love what they do and couldn't imagine doing anything else.

کارەکانیان خۆشدەوێت

هێندەیان خۆشدەوێت کە بیر لە کاری تر نەکەنەوە

If you said, "Don't do this anymore,"

ئەگەر پێیان بڵێێت '' واز لەو کارەتان بهێنن'' نازانن باسی چی دەکەیت

they'd wonder what you're talking about.

چونکە ئەوە ئەو کارە نی یە کە دەیکەن، ئەوە حەقیقەتی ئەوانە ئەوان دەڵێن

It isn't what they do, it's who they are.

They say, "But this is me, you know.

ئەمە منم، دەزانن

It would be foolish to abandon this,

گەمژەییە بۆ من کە واز لەم کارە بهێنم، چونکە

because it speaks to my most authentic self."

ئەمە حەقیقەت منە

And it's not true of enough people.

بەڵام ئەمە بە نسبەتی هەموو کەسێکەوە ڕاست نی یە

In fact, on the contrary, I think it's still true of a minority of people.

لەڕاستیدا خۆی بە پێچەوانەوەیە، وا هەستدەکەم

ئەم قسەیە بۆ بەشێکی کەمی خەڵکی راستە

And I think there are many possible explanations for it.

وابزانم کە ڕوونکردنەوەی زۆر هەیە

کە لەگەڵ ئەم بابەتەدا بگونجێت

And high among them is education,

بەڵام دیرترینیان

پەروەردەیە

because education, in a way,

چونکە لە لایەکەوە پەروەردە

هۆکارێکە کە لە زۆربەی خەڵکی دا

dislocates very many people from their natural talents.

بەهرەهرەکان ناهێڵن

سەرچاوە مرۆییەکانیش هەر وەک سەرچاوە سروشتییەکان وان

And human resources are like natural resources;

زۆر لە قوڵایی دان

they're often buried deep.

You have to go looking for them,

دەبێت بڕۆن و بەدوایاندا بگەڕێن

they're not just lying around on the surface.

ئەوان لەملاو ئەولا نەکەوتوون

You have to create the circumstances where they show themselves.

دەبێت ئێوە بار و دۆخێک بخوڵقێنن کە بەهرەکان تیایدا خۆیان نیشان بدەن

And you might imagine education would be the way that happens,

لەوانەیە وابزانن

پەروەردە رێگەیەک بێت بۆ دروستکردنی ئەو بار و دۆخە

but too often, it's not.

بەڵام زۆر جار وا نی یە

Every education system in the world is being reformed at the moment

هەموو سیستمە پەروەردەییەکان لە جیهاندا

هەموو سیستمە پەروەردەییەکان لە جیهاندا

and it's not enough.

بەڵام ئەمە بەس نی یە

Reform is no use anymore,

ئیتر چاکسازی سودی نەماوە

چونکە لەڕاستیدا ئەمە گەشە بە شتێک دەدات کە خۆی تێکشکاوە

because that's simply improving a broken model.

..ئەوەی ئێمە پێویستمانە

What we need --

and the word's been used many times in the past few days --

وشەیەکە کە زۆر زۆر لە کۆرسەکانی ئەم چەند ڕۆژەی ڕابردوو دا دوبارە بووەتەوە

ئەو وشەیە، گەشەپێدان نی یە

is not evolution,

بەڵکو شوڕشە لە پەروەردەدا

but a revolution in education.

پەروەردە دەبێت بگۆڕدرێت

This has to be transformed into something else.

پەروەردە دەبێت بگۆڕدرێت

One of the real challenges is to innovate fundamentally in education.

یەکێک لە ململانێ سەختەکان

گەشەپێدانی بنەڕەتی یە

لە پەروەردەدا

Innovation is hard,

گۆڕانکاری سەختە

because it means doing something that people don't find very easy,

چونکە گەشەپێدان واتە: کردنی شتێک

کە خەڵکی بە ئاسانی نازانن

for the most part.

گەشەپێدان واتە، ململانێ کردن لەگەڵ ئەو شتانەی کە لەگەڵی ڕاهاتوین

It means challenging what we take for granted,

things that we think are obvious.

The great problem for reform or transformation

یاخود لە گۆڕانکاریدا

is the tyranny of common sense.

بە گژدا چونەوەی شتە باوەکانە

ئەو شتانەی کە خەڵکی وا هەست دەکەن

Things that people think,

"It can't be done differently, that's how it's done."

کە بەهیچ ڕێگایەکی تر ناکرێن، چونکە ئەمە تاکە ڕێگەیە کە ئەم شتەی پێ کراوە

بەم دواییانە وتەیەکی مەزنی (ئەبراهام لینکۆڵن)م خوێندەوە

I came across a great quote recently from Abraham Lincoln,

who I thought you'd be pleased to have quoted at this point.

بەم دواییانە وتەیەکی مەزنی (ئەبراهام لینکۆڵن)م خوێندەوە

(Laughter)

He said this in December 1862 to the second annual meeting of Congress.

لە کانونی یەکەمی ١٨٦٢ دا

لە دوهەمین کۆبونەوەی سالانەی ئەنجومەنی پیراندا، ئەمەی وت

I ought to explain that I have no idea what was happening at the time.

دەبێت ئەوە بڵێم کە نازانم لەو کاتەدا چی ڕوی دەدا

We don't teach American history in Britain.

دەی، خۆ ئێمە وانەی مێژوی ئەمریکا لە بەریتانیا ناڵێینەوە

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

We suppress it. You know, this is our policy.

ئەسڵەن ئەو باسە کپ دەکەین، ئەمە سیاسەتی ئێمەیە

No doubt, something fascinating was happening then,

کەواتە گومان لەوەدا نی یە کە دەبێت شتێکی گرنگ لە کانونی یەکەمی ١٨٦٢ دا ڕوی دابێت

which the Americans among us will be aware of.

کە دەبێت ئەمریکیەکانی ئێرە

ئاگاداری ئەوە بن

But he said this:

بە هەر حاڵ، ئەو گوتی

"The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present.

بیر و باوەڕەکانی

ڕابردووی بێ دەنگمان

بەس نی یە بۆزریانەکانی ئێستا

هەل-ەکان

The occasion is piled high with difficulty,

تەواو تێکەڵ بوون بە ناڕەحەتی یەوە

and we must rise with the occasion."

ئێمەش دەبێت لەگەڵ هەلەکاندا هەستین

زۆر جوانە

I love that.

Not rise to it, rise with it.

ناڵێت هەڵدەستین تاکو هەل-ەکان بەدەستبهێنین بەڵکو دەڵێت لەگەڵیان هەڵدەستین

"As our case is new,

لەبەر ئەوەی حاڵەتەکەمان حاڵەتێکی نوێ یە

so we must think anew and act anew.

بۆیە دەبێت بە شێوەیەکی نوێ بیر بکەینەوە

هەروەها کردەوەی نوێش بکەین

We must disenthrall ourselves,

دەبێت خۆمان لە شتەکانی ڕابرودوو ڕزگار بکەین

and then we shall save our country."

تا بتوانین، وڵاتەکەمان ڕزگار بکەین

I love that word, "disenthrall."

ئەم وشەیەم بە دڵە : ڕزگار بوون

You know what it means?

دەزانن مانای ئەم وشەیە چی یە ؟

That there are ideas that all of us are enthralled to,

چەندین بیرۆکە هەیە کە هەمومان ئالودەی بووین

which we simply take for granted as the natural order of things,

کە زۆر بە سادەیی پێیان ڕازی بووین

هەر وەک شیوەی سروشتی شتەکان، واتە شتەکان خۆیان چۆنن

the way things are.

And many of our ideas have been formed,

زۆربەی زۆری بیرۆکەکانمان

بۆ ڕوو بەوڕوو بوونەوەی ئەم سەدەیە درووست نەبون

not to meet the circumstances of this century,

but to cope with the circumstances of previous centuries.

بەڵکو دروست بون بۆچارەسەر کردنی بارودۆخی سەدەکانی پیشوو

But our minds are still hypnotized by them,

بەڵام هێشتا مێشکمان لەژێر کاریگەری ئەواندایە

and we have to disenthrall ourselves of some of them.

بۆیە دەبێت خۆمان لە بەشێکی ئەو بیرۆکانە ڕزگار بکەین

Now, doing this is easier said than done.

ئەمە بە دەم ئاسانە، بەڵام بە کردەوە نا

It's very hard to know, by the way, what it is you take for granted.

زۆر قورسە کە بزانین کە بە خومان بە چ شتێکەوە گرتووە

And the reason is that you take it for granted.

چونکە لەگەڵ شتەکاندا ڕاهاتووین

(Laughter)

دەی با شتێکتان لێ بپرسم ، کە لەوانەیە لەگەڵی ڕاهاتبن

Let me ask you something you may take for granted.

How many of you here are over the age of 25?

چەند کەس لە ئێوە تەمەنی لە سەروو ٢٥ ساڵەوەیە؟

That's not what you take for granted, I'm sure you're familiar with that.

ئەم پرسیارە ئەوە نی یە کە خوتان پێوە گرتووە

بەڵام دڵنیام کە ئاشنان لەگەڵ پرسیاری وا دا

Are there any people here under the age of 25?

ئەی هیچ کەسی لێیە کە تەمەنی خوار ٢٥ ساڵ بێت؟

زۆر باشە، ئێستا ئەوانەتان کە سەروو ٢٥ ساڵن

Great. Now, those over 25,

could you put your hands up if you're wearing your wristwatch?

ئەگەر سەعاتتان لە دەستدایە، دەستتان بەرز بکەنەوە

ئێتسا ئەمە بەشێکی زۆرە لە ئێمە

Now that's a great deal of us, isn't it?

Ask a room full of teenagers the same thing.

هەمەن پرسیار لە ژورێکدا بکە کە پڕ بێت لە گەنج

Teenagers do not wear wristwatches.

گەنجەکان سەعات لە دەست ناکەن

I don't mean they can't,

مەبەستم ئەوە نی یە کە ناتوانن یاخود ڕێگەیان پێ نادرێت

they just often choose not to.

بەڵکو خۆیان بڕیار دەدەن کە لە دەستی نەکەن

And the reason is we were brought up in a pre-digital culture,

those of us over 25.

And so for us, if you want to know the time,

you have to wear something to tell it.

Kids now live in a world which is digitized,

منداڵانی ئێستا لە جیهانێکی بە دیجیتاڵ کراودا دەژین

and the time, for them, is everywhere.

کات بۆ ئەوان لە هەموو شوێنێک دیارە

They see no reason to do this.

هیچ هۆکارێک نابینن تا سەعات لەدەست بکەن

And by the way, you don't need either;

با لە بیرمان نەچێت، پێویست ناکات ئێمەش لەدەستی بکەین

it's just that you've always done it and you carry on doing it.

تەنها ئەوەندەیە کە ئێمە دایم لە دەستمان کردووە و خومان پیوە گرتووە

My daughter never wears a watch, my daughter Kate, who's 20.

كچەکەم (کەیت) تەمەنی ٢٠ ساڵە و هەرگیز سەعات لە دەست ناکات

She doesn't see the point.

هۆکارێک نابینێت تا لەدەستی بکات

As she says,

وەک خۆی دەڵێت، ئەمە ئامێرێکە کە یەک کار دەکات

"It's a single-function device."

(Laughter)

"Like, how lame is that?"

دەڵێت بۆچی باشە!

And I say, "No, no, it tells the date as well."

منیش دەڵێم : نا، نا، ئەمە ڕۆژ ژمێریشی تیادایە

(Laughter)

"It has multiple functions."

ئەم ئامێرە دوو کار دەکات

(Laughter)

But, you see, there are things we're enthralled to in education.

بەڵام تەماشا کەن ، لە پەروەردە شدا چەند شتێک هەن کە ئێمە خومان پێوە گرتووە

با چەند نمونەیەکتان بۆ باس بکەم

A couple of examples.

One of them is the idea of linearity:

یەکەمیان بیرۆکەی تاک ڕەهەندی-یە

that it starts here and you go through a track

واتە کە شتێک لێرە دەست پێ بکات،بە ڕێڕەوێکدا تێ دەپەڕێت

and if you do everything right,

وە ئەگەر تۆش هەموو شتەکان بە باشی ئەنجام بدەیت

you will end up set for the rest of your life.

ئەوا، ئامادە دەبیت بۆ ئەو بەشەی کە لە ژیانتدا ماوتە

Everybody who's spoken at TED has told us implicitly,

بەڵام هەموو ئەو کەسانەی کە لە بەرنامەکانی (تێد) دا قسەیان کردووە

or sometimes explicitly, a different story:

شتێکی تر دەڵێن

that life is not linear; it's organic.

ئەوان دەڵێن: جیهان ڕیڕەوێکی یەک هێڵی نی یە، بەڵکو جیهان زیندووە

We create our lives symbiotically

ئێمە ژیانمان بە هاو ئاهەنگی دروست دەکەین

as we explore our talents

واتە ئێمە لە بارودۆخێکدا بەهرەکانمان دەدۆزینەوە

in relation to the circumstances they help to create for us.

کە بەهرەکانمان خۆیان بونەتە هۆی دروست کردنی

But, you know, we have become obsessed with this linear narrative.

بەڵام دەزانن چی؟ مێشکی ئێمە ئالودە بووە

بەم چیرۆکی تاک ڕەهەندی-ەوە

And probably the pinnacle for education is getting you to college.

هەروەها لەوانەیە کۆتایی سیتمی پەروەردەیی ئێمە

تەنها بۆ چونە ناو کۆلێژەکان بێت

I think we are obsessed with getting people to college.

وا بزانم خومان بە خەڵک خستنە کۆلیژەکانەوە گرتووە

Certain sorts of college.

جۆرێکی تایبەتی کۆلێژ

I don't mean you shouldn't go, but not everybody needs to go,

مەبەستم ئەوە نی یە کە نابێت بچنە کۆلێژ بەڵام پێویستیش ناکات هەموو کەس بچێت

or go now.

پیویست ناکات هەموکەس ئێستا بچێت بۆ کۆلێژ

Maybe they go later, not right away.

لەوانەیە دواتر بچن، نەک هەر ئێستا

And I was up in San Francisco a while ago doing a book signing.

ماوەیەک لەمەو بەر من لە ( سان فرانسیسکۆ) بووم

کتێبم واژۆ ئەکرد

There was this guy buying a book, he was in his 30s.

کوڕێکی لێ بوو کتێبی دەکڕی، تەمەنی لە ٣٠-یەکاندا بوو

I said, "What do you do?"

پێم وت: ئیشت چی یە؟

And he said, "I'm a fireman."

وتی: من ئاگرکوژێنەوەم

I asked, "How long have you been a fireman?"

منیش پێم وت: چەند دەبێت کە وەک ئاگر کوژێنەوە کار دەکایت؟

"Always. I've always been a fireman."

وتی: هەمیشە، من هەمیشە ئاگرکوژێنەوە بووم

منیش وتم: باشە چەند دەبێت کە بڕیارت داوە ببیتە ئاگرکوژێنەوە؟

"Well, when did you decide?" He said, "As a kid.

وتی: لە ڕاستیدا کاتێک کە منداڵ بووم ئەمە کێشەی من بوو لە قوتابخانە

Actually, it was a problem for me at school,

because at school, everybody wanted to be a fireman."

چونکە لە قوتابخانە هەمو کەسێک دەیەوێت ببێتە ئاگر کوژێنەوە

(Laughter)

ئەو دەیگوت، بەڵام من بە ڕاستی دەمویست ببمە ئاگر کوژێنەوە

He said, "But I wanted to be a fireman."

And he said, "When I got to the senior year of school,

my teachers didn't take it seriously.

مامۆستاکانم بە جددی وەریان نەدەگرت

This one teacher didn't take it seriously.

یەکێک لە مامۆستاکان ئەسڵەن بە جدی وەری نەدەگرت

He said I was throwing my life away

ئەو مامۆستایە وتی: تۆ ژیانی خۆت تێک دەدەیت

if that's all I chose to do with it;

ئەگەر ئەم ئیشە هەڵبژێریت

that I should go to college, I should become a professional person,

دەیگوت تۆ دەبێت بچیتە زانکۆ و ببیتە کەسێکی پڕۆفیشناڵ

that I had great potential

مامۆستاکە دەیگوت تۆ کەسیكی کە توانی شاراوەت هەیە

and I was wasting my talent to do that."

بەڵام بەم کارەت سەرجەم بەهرەکانت لەدەست دەدەیت

He said, "It was humiliating.

کوڕەکە وتی: ئەوە زۆر ناخۆش بوو

It was in front of the whole class and I felt dreadful.

ئەو لەبەرچاوی هەموو خوێندکارەکاندا ئامەنەی پێ وتم، ئەمە منی زۆر بێزار کرد

But it's what I wanted, and as soon as I left school,

I applied to the fire service and I was accepted.

فۆڕمی خزمەتگوزاری ئاگر کوژاندنەوەم پڕ کردەوە و وەرگیرام

You know, I was thinking about that guy recently,

وتی: دەزانی کە بەم دواییانە بیرم لەو مامۆستایە دەکردەوە

just a few minutes ago when you were speaking, about this teacher,

تەنها چەند خولەکێک لەمەوبەر، کە باسی ئەوم دەکرد

because six months ago, I saved his life."

You know, to me,

human communities depend upon a diversity of talent,

is to reconstitute our sense of ability and of intelligence.

This linearity thing is a problem.

which said, "College begins in kindergarten."

If we had time, I could go into this, but we don't.

Kindergarten begins in kindergarten.

A friend of mine once said,

"A three year-old is not half a six year-old."

But as we just heard in this last session,

there's such competition now to get into kindergarten --

ئێستا هێندە داواکاری بۆ ناونوسین لە باخچەی ساوایانەکاندا زۆر بووە

to get to the right kindergarten --

بۆ ناو نوسین لە باخچەیەکی ساوایانی باشدا

that people are being interviewed for it at three.

منداڵانی 3 ساڵ دەبێت چاوپێکەوتنیان لەگەڵ بکرێت تاکو وەرگیرێیت

ئەبێ منداڵەکان لەبەردەم لیژنەیەکی بێ زەوقدا دابنیشن

Kids sitting in front of unimpressed panels,

دەبێت زانیاری و شتەکانیشیان پێ بێت

you know, with their resumes --

Flicking through and saying, "What, this is it?"

زنیاری و شتەکانیان لێ وەردەگرن و پێیان دەڵێن هەر ئەوەندەیە؟

"You've been around for 36 months, and this is it?"

See, it's outrageous as a conception.

The other big issue is conformity.

We have built our education systems on the model of fast food.

ئێمە سیستەمی خوێندنمان لەسەر شیوەی

خواردنی خێرا دروست کردووە

This is something Jamie Oliver talked about the other day.

ئەمە ئەو بابەتەیە کە (جایمی ئۆلیڤەر) دوێنێ قسەی لەبارەوە کرد

There are two models of quality assurance in catering.

دەزانن کە دوو جۆرچێشتخانە هەیە

یەکەمیان خواردنی خیرایە

One is fast food, where everything is standardized.

کە هەموو شتەکان دەبێت بە پێی ستانداردەکان بن

The other is like Zagat and Michelin restaurants,

ئەوی تریشیان وەک ڕیستۆرانتی (زاگات) یان (میشیڵین) ە

where everything is not standardized,

کە هیچ شتێکیان بە پێی ستانداردەکان نی یە

they're customized to local circumstances.

بەڵکو شتەکانیان بە پێی داواکاری کڕیارەکانیانە

And we have sold ourselves into a fast-food model of education,

ئێمەش خۆمان بە جۆری (خواردنی خێرا) لە پەروەردا دا فرۆشتووە

and it's impoverishing our spirit and our energies

ئەمەش توانا و ڕۆحی ئێمە لاوازتر دەکات

as much as fast food is depleting our physical bodies.

هەر وەک چۆن خواردنە خێراکان زیان بە جەستەمان دەگەیەنن

وابزانم دەبێت لێرە دوو شت بناسینەوە

We have to recognize a couple of things here.

یەکەمیان ئەوەیە، توانای مرۆڤ جۆراو جۆرە

One is that human talent is tremendously diverse.

People have very different aptitudes.

مرۆڤەکان خاوەن بەهرەی جیاواز جیاوازن

I worked out recently that I was given a guitar as a kid

من تازە ئەوەم بۆ دەرکەوتووە

کاتێ کە منداڵ بووم گیتارێکیان دەدامێ

at about the same time that Eric Clapton got his first guitar.

وابزانم هەر ئەو کاتە بوو کا (ئیریک کلاپتۆن) تازە یەکەمین گیتاری وەرگرتبوو

It worked out for Eric, that's all I'm saying.

بەڵام دەزانن کە بۆ (ئیریک) سودی هەبوو، من هەر ئەوەندە دەڵێم

In a way --

بەڵام، بۆ من سودی نەبوو

it did not for me.

I could not get this thing to work

من نەمدەتوانی ئەو شتە بخەمە ئیش

no matter how often or how hard I blew into it.

گرنگ نیە کە چەند جار هەوڵم داوە یاخود چەند بە جددی هەوڵم داوا

It just wouldn't work.

بەڵام هەر سودی نەبوو

باسەکە تەنها لەبارەی ئەوەوە نی یە

But it's not only about that.

It's about passion.

بەڵکو لەبارەی خۆشەویستی-یەوەیە

Often, people are good at things they don't really care for.

زۆربەی کات، خەڵکی لەو کارانەدا باشن کە ئەصڵەن هەر گوێی پێ نادەن

مەسەلەکە خۆشەویستی-یە

It's about passion,

and what excites our spirit and our energy.

کە ڕۆح و توانای ئێمە چالاک دەکات

And if you're doing the thing that you love to do, that you're good at,

ئەگەر ئێوە ئیشێک بکەن کە حەزتان لێی بێت، ئەوا تیایدا باش دەبن

time takes a different course entirely.

کات وانەیەکی باشمان فێر دەکات

My wife's just finished writing a novel,

هێندە نابێت کە خێزانەکەم ڕۆمانێکی نوسیوە

and I think it's a great book,

وە وابزانم کتێبێکی مەزنە

but she disappears for hours on end.

بەڵام خیزانەکەم چەند کاتژمێرێک تیایدا ون دەبێت

You know this, if you're doing something you love,

دەزانن، کە ئەگەر کارێک بکەن کە حەزتان لێیەتی

an hour feels like five minutes.

کاتژمێرێکت هەر وەک پێنج خولەک لێ دەڕوا

If you're doing something that doesn't resonate with your spirit,

ئەگەر کارێکیش بکەن کە لەگەڵ ڕۆحتاندا نەگونجێت

پێنج خولەکتان بە کاتژمێرێک لێ دەڕوات

five minutes feels like an hour.

And the reason so many people are opting out of education

ژمارەیەکی زۆری خەڵک واز لە خوێندن دەهێنن

is because it doesn't feed their spirit,

چونکە ئەوە ڕۆحیان تێر ناکات

it doesn't feed their energy or their passion.

ئەوە خواردن ناداتە توانا و سۆزیان

بۆیە وابزانم دەبێت خواستەکانمان بگۆڕین

So I think we have to change metaphors.

We have to go from what is essentially an industrial model of education,

..ئێمە دەبێت لەمە، کە پەروەردەیەکی پیشەسازیانەیە

کە پەروەردەیەکی دەستکردە، دوور بکەوینەوە

a manufacturing model,

which is based on linearity and conformity and batching people.

کە پشتی بەستووە بە سیستەمی یەک ڕەهەندی-و

هەروەها دانان و دابەش کردنی مرڤەکانەوە

We have to move to a model

دەبێت بەرەو جۆرێکی پەروەردە بڕۆین

that is based more on principles of agriculture.

کە لەسەر بنەمای کشتوکاڵ دامەزرابێت

We have to recognize

دەبێت بزانین کاتێک مرۆڤەکان دەگەشێنەوە

that human flourishing is not a mechanical process;

پڕۆسەیەکی میکانیکی نی یە

it's an organic process.

بەڵکو پڕۆسەیەکی زیندووە

And you cannot predict the outcome of human development.

ناتوانن پێشبینی گەشەی مرۆڤەکان بکەن

ئەوەی کە دەتوانن ئەوەیە کە وەک جوتیارێک

All you can do, like a farmer, is create the conditions

بارودۆخێک دروست بکەن، کە تیایدا

under which they will begin to flourish.

مرۆڤەکان بگەشێنەوە

So when we look at reforming education and transforming it,

کەواتە کاتێک تەماشای چاکسازی وگۆڕانکارییەکان دەکەین لە بواری پەروەردە دا

it isn't like cloning a system.

ئەمە نمونەی وەک یەک لێکردنی سیستمەکان نی یە

There are great ones, like KIPP's; it's a great system.

سیستمی پەزنیش هەیە وەک (کیپس) کە سیستمێکی مەزنە

There are many great models.

نمونەی مەزنمان زۆرە

It's about customizing to your circumstances

مەسەلەکە قبوڵکردنی پێشنیارەکانی ئێوەیە

and personalizing education to the people you're actually teaching.

وە هەروەها تەرخانکردنی پەروەردەیە بۆ

ئەو کەسانەی کە فێریان دەکەن

And doing that, I think, is the answer to the future

وابزانم بە کردنی ئەم کارە

وەڵامێکمان بۆ داهاتوو پێ دەبێت

because it's not about scaling a new solution;

چونکە ئەمە پێوەرێک نی یە بۆ دۆزینەوەی ڕێگەچارەی نوێ

it's about creating a movement in education

بەڵکو ئەمە دروستکردنی بزووتنەوەیەکە لە بواری پەروەردەدا

in which people develop their own solutions,

کە تیایدا خەڵکی دەتوانن چارەسەرێک بۆخۆیان بدۆزنەوە

but with external support based on a personalized curriculum.

بەڵام بە بوونی هاوکاری دەرەکی لەسەر بنەمای بەرنامەیەکی تایبەت

Now in this room,

ئێستا لەم هۆڵەدا

there are people who represent extraordinary resources in business,

کەسانی وای لێن کە نوێنەرایەتی

سەرچاوەی بازرگانی گەورە گەورە دەکەن

in multimedia, in the Internet.

لە بواری ڕاگەیاندن و لە تۆڕی ئینتەرنێتدا

These technologies,

ئەم تەکنەلۆژیایانە

combined with the extraordinary talents of teachers,

تێکەڵبکرێن لەگەڵ بەهرە لە ڕادەبەدەرەکنی مامۆستایاندا

provide an opportunity to revolutionize education.

هەلێک درووست دەکەن بۆ سەرهەڵدانی شۆڕش لە پەروەردەدا

And I urge you to get involved in it

منیش زۆرتان لێ دەکەم کە لەمەدا بەشدار بن

چونکە ئەمە گرنگە، نەک بەتەنها بۆخۆمان

because it's vital, not just to ourselves, but to the future of our children.

بەڵکو بۆ داهاتووی منداڵەکانیشمان

But we have to change from the industrial model

ئێمە دەبێت ئەم مۆدێلە پیشەسازیانەیە بگۆڕین

بۆ مۆدێلی کشتوکاڵی

to an agricultural model,

where each school can be flourishing tomorrow.

کە تیایدا سەرجەم قوتابخانەکان بگەشێنەوە

That's where children experience life.

و منداڵەکانمان لەوێدا تامی ژیان بکەن

Or at home, if that's what they choose,

یاخود لەماڵەوە، ئەگەر ویستیان لەوێ پەروەردە بکرێن

to be educated with their families or friends.

لەگەڵ خێزانەکانیان، یاخود لەگەڵ هاوڕێکانیان

There's been a lot of talk about dreams over the course of these few days.

قسەی زۆر لەبارەی خەون-ەوە کراوە

لە کۆرسەکانی ئەم ڕۆژانەی دواییدا

And I wanted to just very quickly --

من دەمەوێت زۆر بە کورتی...

I was very struck by Natalie Merchant's songs last night,

من دوێنێ شەو بە گۆرانییەکەی (ناتالی مێرچنت) زۆر سەرسام بووم

recovering old poems.

کە شیعرێکی کۆنی دەگوتەوە

I wanted to read you a quick, very short poem

دەمەوێت بە خێرای شیعرێکی کورتتان بۆ بخوێنمەوە

from W. B. Yeats, who some of you may know.

شیعرێکی (دەبلیو بی یەتس) کە پێدەچێت هەندێکتان بیناسن

He wrote this to his love, Maud Gonne,

ئەم شیعرەی بۆ خۆشەویستەکەی نوسیی

کە ناوی (مۆود گۆون) بوو

and he was bewailing the fact

ئەو شینی ئەو ڕاستی-یەی دەگێڕا

that he couldn't really give her what he thought she wanted from him.

کە ئەو نەیداتوانی ئەو شتانە بداتە خۆشەویستەکەی کە وای دەزانی خۆشەویستەکەی لەمی دەوێت

And he says, "I've got something else, but it may not be for you."

ئەو وتی : من شتێکی ترم هەیە بەڵام پێدەچێت بۆتۆ نەبێت

He says this:

ئەو ئەمەی وت:

"Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,

''ئەگەر ئاسمانەکانم وەک قوماش بچنیایە--

Enwrought with gold and silver light,

بە تیشکی ئاڵتونی--

و نووری خۆڵەمێشی--

The blue and the dim and the dark cloths

بمکردایە بە قوماشێکی شینی تۆخ

یاخود پۆشاکی ڕەش بۆ کاتەکانی

Of night and light and the half-light,

شەو و بەرەبەیان

جلەکانم لەبەر پێتا فڕی دەدەم

I would spread the cloths under your feet:

بەڵام من، چونکە هەژارم

But I, being poor, have only my dreams;

تەنها خەونەکانمم هەیە

I have spread my dreams under your feet;
