So more than just explosions,

کیمیا زۆر زیاتر لە تەقینەوەکان،

chemistry is everywhere.

لە هەموو شوێنێکدا بوونی هەیە.

Have you ever found yourself at a restaurant spacing out

ئایا قەت لە چێشتخانەیەک خۆت بینیووە بە بێ بیر کردنەوە

just doing this over and over?

ئەم کردارە جار لە دوای جار بکەیت؟

Some people nodding yes.

هەندێکتان بۆ وەڵامی بەڵێ سەر دەلەقێن.

Recently, I showed this to my students,

لە ماوەی ڕابردوو، ئەمەم پێشانی خوێندکارەکانم دا،

and I just asked them to try and explain why it happened.

داوام لێکردن هەوڵبدەن بۆم ڕوون بکەنەوە بۆچی ئەمە ڕوودەدات.

The questions and conversations that followed

پرسیار و گفتوگۆکانی بەهۆی ئەمەوە دروست بوو

were fascinating.

Now obviously, as Maddie's chemistry teacher,

I love that she went home and continued to geek out

about this kind of ridiculous demonstration

But what fascinated me more is that Maddie's curiosity

took her to a new level.

If you look inside that beaker,

you might see a candle.

Maddie's using temperature to extend this phenomenon

to a new scenario.

You know, questions and curiosity like Maddie's

ئێوە دەزانن، پرسیارەکان و حەزی فێربوون لە ماددی

are magnets that draw us towards our teachers,

وەک موگناتیسن بۆ مامۆستاکانمان ڕامان دەکێشێت،

and they transcend all technology

ئەوان هەموو تەکنەلۆژیاکان و

or buzzwords in education.

وشە سواوەکانی پەروەردە تێدەپەرێنن.

But if we place these technologies before student inquiry,

ئەگەر تەکنەلۆژیا بخەینە پێش پرسیارەکانی خوێندکارەکان،

we can be robbing ourselves

وەک مامۆستایان خۆمان ڕێگری لە گرنگترین

of our greatest tool as teachers: our students' questions.

For example, flipping a boring lecture from the classroom

بۆ نموونە، چاو پێداخشاندنەوە بە وانەیەکی بێزارکەر لە پۆڵدا

to the screen of a mobile device

بخرێتە سەر شاشەیی مۆبایل،

might save instructional time,

لەوانەیە کاتی وانە گوتنەوە بپارێزێت،

but if it is the focus of our students' experience,

بەڵام ئەگەر ئامانجەکە ئەزموونی خوێندکار بێت،

it's the same dehumanizing chatter

هەمان کات بە فیڕۆدانە بەڵام

just wrapped up in fancy clothing.

لە بەرگێکی جواندا.

But if instead we have the guts

بەڵام، ئەگەر ئازایەتیمان هەبێت

to confuse our students, perplex them,

سەر لە خوێندکارەکانمان بشێوێنین، بیانشڵەژێنین،

and evoke real questions,

و پرسیاری ڕاستەقینە ئامادە بکەن،

through those questions, we as teachers have information

لە ڕێگەی ئەم پرسیارانەوە، ئێمەی مامۆستایان زانیاریمان دەست دەکەوێت

that we can use to tailor robust

دەتوانین بۆ دروست کردنی پڕۆگرامێکی

and informed methods of blended instruction.

So, 21st-century lingo jargon mumbo jumbo aside,

the truth is, I've been teaching for 13 years now,

and it took a life-threatening situation

to snap me out of 10 years of pseudo-teaching

and help me realize that student questions

are the seeds of real learning,

not some scripted curriculum

that gave them tidbits of random information.

کە کۆمەڵێک زانیاری کۆکراوەی سەرلێشێوێنەریان فێر دەکەن.

In May of 2010, at 35 years old,

لە مانگی ٥ ی ٢٠١٠، لە تەمەنی ٣٥ ساڵیدا،

with a two-year-old at home and my second child on the way,

باوکی منداڵێکی دوو ساڵانی بووم و منداڵی دووەمیشم لە ڕێگە بوو،

I was diagnosed with a large aneurysm

پێان ڕاگەیاندم کە تووشی هەڵئاوسانی شادەمارم

at the base of my thoracic aorta.

This led to open-heart surgery. This is the actual real email

from my doctor right there.

Now, when I got this, I was -- press Caps Lock --

کاتێک ئەم ئیمەیڵەیم پێ گەیشت،

absolutely freaked out, okay?

بە ڕاستی زۆر ترسام و تۆقێنەر بوو، باشە؟

But I found surprising moments of comfort

بەڵام متمانەی دکتۆرەکەم

in the confidence that my surgeon embodied.

ئارامی پێدەبەخشم.

Where did this guy get this confidence, the audacity of it?

ئەم پیاوە ئەم هەموو متمانە و ئازایەتییەی لە کوێ هێناوە؟

So when I asked him, he told me three things.

کاتێک لێم پرسی. سێ شتی پێ گوتم.

He said first, his curiosity drove him

گوتی یەکەم،حەزی فێربوونی هانی دەدات

to ask hard questions about the procedure,

پرسیار لەم جۆرە شتانە بکەم،

about what worked and what didn't work.

سەبارەت بە چی باشە و چی خراپە.

Second, he embraced, and didn't fear,

دووەم، لە ترس نەدەترسا،

the messy process of trial and error,

لە تاقیکردنەوە و سەرنەکەوتن نەدەترسا،

the inevitable process of trial and error.

تاقیکردنەوە و سەرنەکەوتن لای شتێکی حەتمی بوو.

And third, through intense reflection,

سێهەم، گەر بە قوڵی بیری لێبکەمەوە،

he gathered the information that he needed

ئەو هەموو زانیاریانەی پێویستی بوو کۆی کردبووەوە

to design and revise the procedure,

بۆ درست کردنی نەخشەڕێگە و پێداچوونەوە پرۆسەکە،

and then, with a steady hand, he saved my life.

دواتر، بە ئارامی ژیانی منی ڕزگار کرد.

Now I absorbed a lot from these words of wisdom,

ئێستا من زۆر لەم گوتە ژیرانە فێربووم،

and before I went back into the classroom that fall,

پێش ئەوەی لە پایز بچمەوە خوێندنگە،

I wrote down three rules of my own

من سێ یاسای تایبەت بە خۆم نووسی

that I bring to my lesson planning still today.

تا ئێستا هەموویان لە پلانی خوێندن جێبەجێیان دەکەم.

Rule number one: Curiosity comes first.

یاسایی یەکەم: فێربوون یان زانینخواز پێش هەموو شتێک.

Questions can be windows to great instruction,

پرسیارەکان دەکرێت دەرچەی باشتری فێربوونمان بۆ بکەنەوە،

but not the other way around.

نەک بە پێچەوانەوە.

Rule number two: Embrace the mess.

یاسایی دووەم: لە ئاژاوە مەترسە و ئارامبە.

We're all teachers. We know learning is ugly.

ئێمەی مامۆستایان، دەزانین فێربوون بێزارکەرە.

And just because the scientific method is allocated

و لەبەر دابەشکاری ڕێگەی کتێبی زانستی

to page five of section 1.2 of chapter one

بابەتێکی لە پەیجێکی دیاریکراو و کەرتێکی داناوە

of the one that we all skip, okay,

ئێمە هەموومان نەمانخوێندووە،

trial and error can still be an informal part

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا، تاقیکردنەوە و سەرنەکەوتن دەکرێت بەشێکی زیاد کراو بێت

of what we do every single day

لە خوێندنی ڕۆژانەی

at Sacred Heart Cathedral in room 206.

And rule number three: Practice reflection.

یاسایی سێهەم: کرداریی بیربکەوە.

What we do is important. It deserves our care,

ئەو کارانەی دەیانکەین گرنگن. شایستەی گرنگی پێدانی ئێمەن،

but it also deserves our revision.

بەڵام دەبێت پێداچوونەوەشیان بۆ بکەین.

Can we be the surgeons of our classrooms?

دەکرێت نۆژداری کڵاسەکانمان بین؟

بۆ ئەوەی ڕۆژێک لە ڕۆژان ئەو کارانە بۆ ڕزگار کردنی ژیانی خەڵک بێت.

As if what we are doing one day will save lives.

Our students our worth it.

خوێندکارەکانمان شایستەی ئەوەن.

And each case is different.

و هەر حاڵەتێک جیاوازە لە حاڵەتەکەیتر.

The chemistry teacher in me just needed to get that

مامۆستاکەی کیمیایی ناخم پێویستی بەمە بوو

out of my system before we move on.

بەبێ ئەوەی خۆم بمەوێت، پێش ئەوەی بچمە سەر بابەتێکیتر.

So these are my daughters.

ئەمانە کچەکانمن.

On the right we have little Emmalou -- Southern family.

ئەوەی لای ڕاست، ئێمەلووە -- ئێمە خێزانێکین لە باشوور.

And, on the left, Riley.

و ئەوەی لای چەپیش ڕایلییە.

Now Riley's going to be a big girl in a couple weeks here.

ڕایلی دوای چەند هەفتەیەک دەبێتە کچێکی گەورە.

She's going to be four years old,

تەمەنی دەبێتە چوار ساڵان،

and anyone who knows a four-year-old

هەر کەسێک شارەزای ئەم تەمەنە بێت

knows that they love to ask, "Why?"

دەزانێت لەم تەمەنە زۆر پرسیار دەکەن، و دەڵێن "بۆ؟"

Yeah. Why.

بەڵێ. بۆچی.

I could teach this kid anything

من دەتوانم ئەو منداڵە فێرە هەر شتێک بکەم

because she is curious about everything.

چونکە زۆر فێرخوازە.

We all were at that age.

ئێمە کاتێک لەم تەمەنە بووین.

But the challenge is really for Riley's future teachers,

بەڵام بەرنگاریە ڕاستەقینیەکە بۆ مامۆستاکانی ڕایڵیە،

the ones she has yet to meet.

ئەو مامۆستایانەی هێشتا چاویان پێ نەکەوتووە.

How will they grow this curiosity?

چۆن ئەم زانینخوازیە پەرە پێدەدەن؟

You see, I would argue that Riley is a metaphor for all kids,

وەک دەبینن، من پێم وایە ڕایڵی نموونەیەکە بۆ هەموو منداڵان،

and I think dropping out of school comes in many different forms --

و پێم وایە وازهێنان لە خوێندن بە چەند شێوازێکی جیاوازە --

to the senior who's checked out before the year's even begun

بۆ ئەو فێرخوازانەی پێش ئەوەی خوێندن دەست پێبکاتەوە وازیانهێنا

or that empty desk in the back of an urban middle school's classroom.

یان ئەو میزە چۆڵانەی دواوەی پۆڵەکانی خوێندنگەکانی شارەکان.

But if we as educators leave behind

بەڵام ئێمە گەر وەک مامۆستایان واز لە

this simple role as disseminators of content

پابەندبوون بە مەنهج بهێنن

and embrace a new paradigm

ڕێگەیەکی جیاواز بدۆزینەوە

as cultivators of curiosity and inquiry,

بۆ پەرە پێدانی زانینخوازی و پرسیارکردن،

we just might bring a little bit more meaning

لەوانەیە بتوانین زیاتر مانا بە خوێندنی

to their school day, and spark their imagination.

ڕۆژانە ببەخشین و خەیاڵی فێرخوازان پەرە پێ بدەین.
