I'm five years old, and I am very proud.

that I appoint myself the leader of my little group of friends

and I devise missions for us.

So we prowl from house to house

looking for flies captured in spider webs

and we set them free.

Four years earlier, when I was one,

after the Chernobyl accident,

the rain came down black,

and my sister's hair fell out in clumps,

Thanks to Chernobyl, we get asylum in the U.S.

I am six years old, and I don't cry when we leave home

여섯살의 저는 집을 떠나 미국으로 올 때

and we come to America,

울지 않습니다.

because I expect it to be a place filled with rare

and wonderful things like bananas and chocolate

So the first day we get to New York,

my grandmother and I find a penny

할머니와 저는 우리 가족이 머무는

in the floor of the homeless shelter that my family's staying in.

노숙자 보호소의 바닥에서 1전짜리 동전 하나를 발견합니다.

Only, we don't know that it's a homeless shelter.

당시 우리는 그곳이 노숙자 보호소라는 걸 모르고 있을 뿐이죠.

We think that it's a hotel, a hotel with lots of rats.

우린 그곳이 호텔이라고 생각했어요. 쥐가 많은 호텔이요.

So we find this penny kind of fossilized in the floor,

우리가 찾은 1전짜리 페니 동전은 바닥에 화석처럼 굳어있는데

and we think that a very wealthy man must have left it there

우린 생각하기를 굉장히 부유한 사람이 거기에 놓아뒀나보다 했죠,

because regular people don't just lose money.

왜냐하면 사람들은 보통 돈을 잃어버리지 않으니까요.

And I hold this penny in the palm of my hand,

전 이 페니를 제 손바닥에 쥐어봤어요.

and it's sticky and rusty,

그건 끈적하고 녹슬었지만

but it feels like I'm holding a fortune.

I decide that I'm going to get my very own piece

And in that moment, I feel like a millionaire.

About a year later, I get to feel that way again

when we find a bag full of stuffed animals in the trash,

and suddenly I have more toys

And again, I get that feeling when we get a knock

on the door of our apartment in Brooklyn,

and my sister and I find a deliveryman

with a box of pizza that we didn't order.

문을 열자 배달원이 우리가 주문하지 않은 피자를 들고 있을 때였어요.

So we take the pizza, our very first pizza,

and we devour slice after slice

한쪽씩 게걸스럽게 먹어치웠어요.

as the deliveryman stands there and stares at us from the doorway.

배달원이 문 앞에 서서 우릴 쳐다보는 동안요.

And he tells us to pay, but we don't speak English.

그가 우리에게 돈을 달라고 했지만, 우리는 영어를 할 줄 몰랐지요.

My mother comes out, and he asks her for money,

우리 엄마가 나오고, 배달원은 엄마에게 돈을 요구합니다.

but she doesn't have enough.

하지만 엄마가 가진 돈은 모자랐어요.

She walks 50 blocks to and from work every day

엄마는 매일 버스비를 아끼기 위해

just to avoid spending money on bus fare.

50 블록을 걸어서 일하러 가셨어요.

Then our neighbor pops her head in,

그때 우리 이웃이 보더니

and she turns red with rage when she realizes

어떻게 된 일인지 아래층의 이민자들이

that those immigrants from downstairs

자기 피자를 가져갔다는 걸 알고

have somehow gotten their hands on her pizza.

분노로 얼굴이 시뻘개졌지요.

Everyone's upset.

모두 화가 나있었어요.

But the pizza is delicious.

하지만 그 피자는 맛있었어요.

It doesn't hit me until years later just how little we had.

수년이 지나서야 저는 우리가 얼마나 가난했는지 깨닫습니다.

On our 10 year anniversary of being in the U.S.,

우리가 미국에 온지 10년이 된 날,

we decided to celebrate by reserving a room

우리가 미국에 도착했을 때 처음으로 묵었던 호텔에

at the hotel that we first stayed in when we got to the U.S.

방을 예약해 자축하기로 했어요.

The man at the front desk laughs, and he says,

프론트 데스크의 남자는 소리내서 웃고는 말했지요.

"You can't reserve a room here. This is a homeless shelter."

"여기는 예약이 안돼요. 여긴 노숙자 보호소에요."

And we were shocked.

My husband Brian was also homeless as a kid.

제 남편 브라이언도 어렸을 때 노숙 생활을 했어요.

His family lost everything, and at age 11,

he had to live in motels with his dad,

motels that would round up all of their food

and keep it hostage until they were able to pay the bill.

And one time, when he finally got his box

But he did have one thing.

two G.I. Joes painted to look like Spider-Man

and five Gobots. And this was his treasure.

5개의 고보트(Gobot) 장난감이 들어있었죠. 이게 그의 보물이었어요.

This was his own assembly of heroes

이게 그를 지켜준 영웅들이었어요.

that kept him from drugs and gangs

마약과 범죄 집단으로부터,

and from giving up on his dreams.

꿈을 포기하는 것으로부터 보호해 줬어요.

I'm going to tell you about one more

우리 집안에 또 하나의

formerly homeless member of our family.

노숙자에 대해 이야기 해드릴게요.

This is Scarlett.

스칼렛이에요.

Once upon a time, Scarlet was used as bait in dog fights.

옛날 옛적 스칼렛은 투견 경기에서 미끼로 쓰였어요.

She was tied up and thrown into the ring

스칼렛을 묶어서 경기장 안으로 던지면

for other dogs to attack so they'd get more aggressive before the fight.

투견들이 와서 공격하면서 본 싸움 전에 더 난폭하게 되도록 하는거죠.

And now, these days, she eats organic food

지금의 스칼렛은 유기농 음식을 먹고

and she sleeps on an orthopedic bed with her name on it,

자신의 이름이 써진 과학적으로 설계된 침대에서 잡니다.

but when we pour water for her in her bowl,

하지만 우리가 물그릇에 물을 따라줄 때마다,

she still looks up and she wags her tail in gratitude.

스칼렛은 여전히 우릴 올려다보며 감사의 뜻으로 꼬리를 흔들어요.

Sometimes Brian and I walk through the park with Scarlett,
