The day I left home for the first time

It was neutral, impassive and even, after a while,

Suddenly the voice didn't seem quite so benign anymore,

I was referred to a psychiatrist, who likewise

Which I actually did, and which needless to say

In effect, a vicious cycle of fear, avoidance,

Now, at first, this was very difficult to believe,

So for example, voices which threatened to attack my home

Now at first, I would have believed them.

I remember, for example, sitting up one night

Because I'd had such a bad problem with self-injury

Throughout all of this, what I would ultimately realize

The voices took the place of this pain

And to be honest, sometimes I quite enjoyed their attention as well.

و صادقانه بگم كه گاهى كاملاً از اين توجه آنها هم لذت مى‌‌بردم.

As Oscar Wilde has said, the only thing worse

همانطور كه اسكار وايلد گفته است، بدترين كار در قياس با

حرف زدن درباره مساله‌‌اى فقط مى‌‌تواند حرف نزدن درباره آن مساله باشد.

than being talked about is not being talked about.

It also makes you very good at eavesdropping,

اين كار همينطور باعث مى‌‌شود كه در استراق سمع خيلى خوب باشيد،

because you can listen to two conversations simultaneously.

So it's not all bad.

پس خيلى هم بد نيست.

I worked in mental health services,

من در مراكز خدماتى بهداشت روان كار كردم،

I spoke at conferences,

در كنفرانس‌‌ها صحبت كردم،

I published book chapters and academic articles,

كتابهایی با فصول مختلف و مقالات دانشگاهى چاپ كردم

and I argued, and continue to do so,

و استدلال آوردم و به اين كار ادامه دادم،

the relevance of the following concept:

درباره ارتباط مفهوم زير:

that an important question in psychiatry

كه يك سوال مهم در روانپزشكى

shouldn't be what's wrong with you

نبايد اين باشد كه چه مشكلى دارى

but rather what's happened to you.

بلكه بايد اين باشد كه چه اتفاقى برايت افتاده است.

And all the while, I listened to my voices,

و در تمام این مدت، من به صداهایم گوش دادم،

with whom I'd finally learned to live with peace and respect

و بالاخره یاد گرفتم در نهایت صلح و احترام با آن زندگی کنم

and which in turn reflected a growing sense

و در عوض شاهد رشد حسهای

of compassion, acceptance and respect towards myself.

دلسوزی، پذیرش و احترام نسبت به خودم باشم.

And I remember the most moving and extraordinary moment

و آن لحظه بسیار تاثیرگذار و استثنایی را بخاط میاورم که

when supporting another young woman who was terrorized by her voices,

از زن جوان دیگری که از شنیدن صداهایش وحشت زده بود، حمایت می‌کردم.

and becoming fully aware, for the very first time,

و براى نخستين بار، به اين آگاهى كامل دست يافتم

that I no longer felt that way myself

كه ديگر درباره خودم آن حس را نداشتم

but was finally able to help someone else who was.

اين كه سرانجام قادر بودم به كس ديگرى كمك كنم.

I'm now very proud to be a part of Intervoice,

الان از اين كه بخشى از اين پيكر سازمانى

the organizational body of the International Hearing Voices Movement,

و بين صدايى از جنبش شنيدن صداها هستم، بخودم خيلى مى‌‌بالم.

an initiative inspired by the work of Professor Marius Romme

حركتى كه در ابتدا الهام بخش آن كار پروفسور ماريوس رومى

and Dr. Sandra Escher,

و دكتر ساندارا اسخر بود،

which locates voice hearing as a survival strategy,

كه شنيدن صدا را بعنوان استراتژى براى بقاء تشخيص مى‌‌دهند،

a sane reaction to insane circumstances,

واكنشى عاقلانه به شرايط جنون آميز،

not as an aberrant symptom of schizophrenia to be endured,

نه بعنوان نشانه‌‌اى گمراه كننده از اسكيتزوفرنيا كه تحمل شود،

but a complex, significant and meaningful experience

بلكه يك تجربه پيچيده، مهم و پرمعنايى

to be explored.

كه مورد تحقيق قرار گيرد.

Together, we envisage and enact a society

با هم، جامعه‌‌اى را مى‌‌سازيم

that understands and respects voice hearing,

كه شنيدن صداها را درك مى‌‌كند و به آن احترام مى‌‌گذارد،

supports the needs of individuals who hear voices,

از نيازهاى كسانى كه صداها را مى‌‌شنوند حمايت مى‌كند

and which values them as full citizens.

و براى آنها به اندازه شهروندان كامل ارزش قائل است.

This type of society is not only possible,

این مدل از جامعه نه تنها ممکن نیست،

it's already on its way.

بلکه همین حالا نیز در راه است.

To paraphrase Chavez, once social change begins,

چيزى كه چاوز می گوید،" زمانی که جامعه تغییر می‌کند،

it cannot be reversed.

نمی‌توان آن را به عقب برگرداند.

You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride.

شما نمی‌توانید کسی که احساس غرور می‌کند را تحقیر کنید.

You cannot oppress the people

نمی‌توانید به مردمی ستم کنید

who are not afraid anymore.

که دیگر نمی‌ترسند."

For me, the achievements of the Hearing Voices Movement

برای من، دستاوردهای جنبش شنيدن صداها

are a reminder that empathy, fellowship,

یادآور این است که همدلی، رفاقت،

justice and respect are more than words;

عدالت و احترام بیش از کلمات هستند

they are convictions and beliefs,

آنها باورها و احكام هستند،

and that beliefs can change the world.

و آن باورها می توانند دنیا را تغییر دهند.

In the last 20 years, the Hearing Voices Movement

در بیست سال گذشته و جنبش صداهای شنیدنی

has established hearing voices networks

شبکه‌‌هایی از جنبش شنيدن صداها را در ۲۶ کشور

in 26 countries across five continents,

در سرتاسر پنج قاره تاسیس کرده است که باهم

working together to promote dignity, solidarity

در راستای ترفیع مقام، انسجام و

and empowerment for individuals in mental distress,

قدرتمندى افراد تحت تاثير فشارهای روانی تلاش مى‌‌كند

to create a new language and practice of hope,

تا زبانی جدید را خلق کند و امیدواريى را تمرین کند

which, at its very center, lies an unshakable belief

که در مرکز آن، باوری خدشه‌‌ناپذير

in the power of the individual.

در قدرت فرد وجود دارد.

As Peter Levine has said, the human animal

همانطور که پیتر لوین گفته است،بشر حیوان

is a unique being

موجودی استثنایی است

endowed with an instinctual capacity to heal

که به وى ظرفیتی غریزی برای درمان كردن و روحی هوشمند

and the intellectual spirit to harness this innate capacity.

برای مهار کردن این ظرفیت ذاتی، اعطاء شده است.

In this respect, for members of society,

در این رابطه، برای اعضای جامعه،

there is no greater honor or privilege

شرافت یا امتیاز بیشتری نسبت به

than facilitating that process of healing for someone,

تسهیل بخشیدن آن فرایند در درمان شخص وجود ندارد

to bear witness, to reach out a hand,

تا براى به اشتراك گذاردن

to share the burden of someone's suffering,

رنج كشيدن فرد، شهادت دهد و دستش را دراز كند

and to hold the hope for their recovery.

و اميدش را براى بهبودى آنها نگهدارد.

And likewise, for survivors of distress and adversity,

و به همین ترتیب، بخاطر نجات یافتگان از فشار روحی و مصیبت،

that we remember we don't have to live our lives

باید بخاطر داشته باشیم که ما نباید همواره زندگی را ادامه دهیم که بواسطه

forever defined by the damaging things that have happened to us.

چیزهای آسیب رساننده‌ای که برايمان اتفاق افتاده‌اند، تعریف شود.

We are unique. We are irreplaceable.

ما بی‌همتا هستیم. ما غیر قابل جایگزین هستیم.

What lies within us can never be truly colonized,

contorted, or taken away.

The light never goes out.

As a very wonderful doctor once said to me,
