Which is the hardest word to translate in this sentence?

گرانترین ووشە بۆ وەرگێڕان لەم رستەیەدا؟

"Know" is easy to translate.

“زانین” ئاسانە بۆ وەرگێڕان.

"Pep rally" doesn't have a direct analog in a lot of languages and cultures,

“کۆبوونەەوەی پێش چالاکی” وەک یەک نین لە زۆر زمان و کلتوردا،

but can be approximated.

بەڵام دەتوانرێت نزیک بکرێنەوە.

But the hardest word there is actually one of the smallest: "you."

بەڵام گرانترین ووشە لەوێ لە ڕاستیدا یەکێکە لە بچوکترینەکان: “تۆ.”

As simple as it seems,

ھەرچەند سادە دیارە،

it's often impossible to accurately translate "you"

زۆرجار ئەستەمە بە تەواوی “تۆ” وەربگێڕیت

without knowing a lot more about the situation where it's being said.

بەبێ ئەوەی زۆر بزانی دەربارەی ئەو بارودۆخەی دەوترێت.

To start with, how familiar are you with the person you're talking to?

بۆ دەست پێکردن، چەند ئاشنایت لەگەڵ ئەو کەسەی قسەی لەگەڵ دەکەیت؟

Many cultures have different levels of formality.

زۆر کلتور جیاوازیان ھەیە لە ئاستی فەرمی

A close friend,

ھاوڕێیەکی نزیک،

someone much older or much younger,

کەسێک زۆر گەورەتر یان کەسێک زۆر گەنج تر،

a stranger,

نامۆیەک،

a boss.

بەڕێوەبەرێک.

These all may be slightly different "you's."

ھەموو ئەمانە لەوانەیە کەمێک “تۆ“ی جیاواز بن .

In many languages, the pronoun reflects these differences

لە زۆر لە زمانەکان، ڕاناو کاردانەوەی ئەو جیاوازیانەیە

through what's known as the T–V distinction.

بەھۆی ئەو شتانەی ناسراون وەک جیاکەرەوەی T_V.

In French, for example,

بۆ نمونە، لە فەڕەنسی،

you would say "tu" when talking to your friend at school,

دەڵێی “تو” کاتێک قسە ڵەگەڵ ھاوڕێکەت دەکەی لە قوتابخانە،

but "vous" when addressing your teacher.

بەڵام ” ڤۆس” کاتێک ناونیشانی مامۆستاکەت دەکەیت.

Even English once had something similar.

تەنانەت زمانی ئینگلیزیش شتێکی ھاوشێوەی ھەبوو.

Remember the old-timey "thou?"

بیرتان دێ “thou”ی کاتە کۆنەکان؟

Ironically, it was actually the informal pronoun

گاڵتەخوازی، لە ڕاستیدا دەربڕینی نا فەرمی بوو

for people you're close with,

بۆ خەڵکی نزیک لێت،

while "you" was the formal and polite version.

لە کاتێکدا “تۆ” وەشانە فەرمی و بەڕێزەکە بوو.

That distinction was lost

ئەم جیاوازیە ون بوو

when the English decided to just be polite all the time.

کاتێک ئینگلیزەکان بڕیاریان دا ھەمووکاتێک بە ڕەوشت بن.

But the difficulty in translating "you" doesn't end there.

بەڵام گرانی وەڕگێڕانی “تۆ” لەوێ کۆتایی نایەت.

In languages like Hausa or Korana,

لە زمانەکانی وەک ھاوسە و کۆرانا،

the "you" form depends on the listener's gender.

“تۆ” پشت دەبەستێت بە ڕەگەزی گوێگرەکان.

In many more, it depends on whether they are one or many,

لە زۆر زیاتر، پشت دەبەستێت بەوەی ئەوان یەکن یان زیاتر،

such as with German "Du" or "ihr."

ھەروەک ئەڵمانی “دو” یان “ئیخ.”

Even in English,

تەنانەت لە ئینگلیزیش،

some dialects use words like "y'all" or "youse" the same way.

ھەندێک شێوەزار وشە بەکاردێنن وەک ‏“y’all” یان “youse”بە ھەمان شێوە.

ھەندێک دەربڕینی کۆ، وەک فەڕەنسی “ڤۆوس”

Some plural forms, like the French "vous"

and Russian "Вы"

ڕوسیا “بایبڵ”

are also used for a single person

بەکاردێن بۆ تاکە کەسەکان

to show that the addressee is that much more important,

بۆ نیشاندانی ئەوەی ناونیشانکراو زۆر گرینگترە،

much like the royal "we."

زیاتر وەک “ئێمە” ی شاھانە.

And a few languages even have a specific form

ھەندێک لە زمانەکان شێوەی دیاریکراویان ھەیە

for addressing exactly two people,

بۆ دەستنیشان کردنی دوو کەس بە تەواوی،

like Slovenian "vidva."

وەک “ڤیدڤا“ی سلۆڤینی

If that wasn't complicated enough,

ئەگەر ئەوەش بە تەواوی ئاڵۆز نەبوو،

formality, number, and gender can all come into play at the same time.

فەرمی، ژمارە، و ڕەگەز ھەموویان لە یەک کات دەتوانن بێنە ئاراوە.

In Spanish, "tú" is unisex informal singular,

لە ئیسپانی، “تو” دوو ڕەگەز نافەرمی تاکە،

"usted" is unisex formal singular,

“ئوستێد” دوو ڕەگەز فەرمی تاکە،

"vosotros" is masculine informal plural,

“ڤۆسۆترۆس” نێر نافەرمی کۆیە،

"vosotras" is feminine informal plural,

“ڤۆسۆتراس” مێی نافەرمی کۆیە،

and "ustedes" is the unisex formal plural.

وە “ئوستێدێس” دوو ڕەگەزی فەرمی کۆیە.

Phew!

تەواو!

After all that,

دوای ھەموو ئەمانە،

it may come as a relief

لەوانەیە وەک پشوێک بێت

that some languages often leave out the second person pronoun.

ھەندێک زمان زۆرجار کەسی دووەم دەرنابڕن.

In languages like Romanian and Portuguese,

لە زمانەکانی وەک ڕۆمانی و پرتوگالی،

the pronoun can be dropped from sentences

ڕاناو دەتوانرێت دەربھێنرێت لە ڕستە

because it's clearly implied by the way the verbs are conjugated.

لەبەر ئەوەی بە ڕونی وادەگەیەنێت بەم شێوەیە فرمانەکات جووت بوینە.

And in languages like Korean, Thai, and Chinese,

لە زمانەکانی وەک کۆری، تایلەندی، و چینی،

pronouns can be dropped without any grammatical hints.

ڕاناوەکان دەتوانرێ دەربھێنرێ بەبێ ھیچ نیشانەیەکی ڕێزمانی.

Speakers often would rather have

تا ڕادەیەکی زۆر قسەکەرەکان پێیان باشترە

the listener guess the pronoun from context

گوێگر ڕاناوەکە بخەمڵێنێ لە دەقەکە

than use the wrong one and risk being seen as rude.

لە ھەڵە بەکارھێنانێک و مەترسی سەیرکردن بە کەمتەرخەمی.

So if you're ever working as a translator

کەواتە تۆ ئەگەر وەک وەرگێڕێک کار بکەیت

and come across this sentence without any context:

بێیتە سەر ئەم ڕستەیە بەبێ ھیچ دەقێک:

"You and you, no, not you,

تۆ و تۆ، نا، تۆ نا،

you, your job is to translate 'you' for yourselves" ...

تۆ، کارەکەت بۆ وەرگێڕان ‘تۆ’ بۆ خۆت” ...
