Which is the hardest word to translate in this sentence?

قورسترین وشە کە لەم دێڕەدا وەرگێڕانی بۆ بکەیت کامەیە؟

"Know" is easy to translate.

''know'' ئاسانە بۆ وەرگێڕان.

"Pep rally" doesn't have a direct analog in a lot of languages and cultures,

''pep rally'' لە زۆربەی زمان و کلتورەکاندا شتێکی هاوبەشی نییە،

but can be approximated.

بەڵام دەتوانیت خەمڵاندنی بۆ بکرێت.

But the hardest word there is actually one of the smallest: "you."

بەڵام لێرەدا قورسترین وشە لەڕاستیدا بچوکترینیانە:''you''.

As simple as it seems,

سادەو ئاسان دەربکەوێت،

it's often impossible to accurately translate "you"

زۆرجار ئەستەمە کە بە دروستی وەرگێڕان بۆ ''you'' بکرێت

without knowing a lot more about the situation where it's being said.

بەبێ ئەوەی زانیاری تەواوت لەسەر ئەو بارودۆخە هەبێت کە تێیدا گوتراوە.

To start with, how familiar are you with the person you're talking to?

پێش هەموو شتێک، تا چەند شارەزای ئەو کەسەی کە قسەی لەگەڵدا دەکەیت؟

Many cultures have different levels of formality.

زۆر لە کلتورەکان چەندین ئاستی جیاوازی هەڵسوکەوتیان هەیە.

A close friend,

هاوڕێی نزیک،

someone much older or much younger,

کەسێک زۆر گەورەتر یانیش زۆر بچووکتر،

a stranger,

ڕێبوارێك،

a boss.

These all may be slightly different "you's."

کەمێک جیاوازیان هەیە لە ڕووی بەکارهێنانی''you''.

In many languages, the pronoun reflects these differences

لە زۆربەی زمانەکاندا، جێناو ئەو جیاوازیانە دەردەخات

through what's known as the T–V distinction.

بە هۆی جیاکردنەوەی T-V.

In French, for example,

بۆ نموونە بە فەڕەنسی،

you would say "tu" when talking to your friend at school,

کاتێک لە خوێندنگە لەگەڵ هاوڕێکەت قسە دەکەیت دەڵێیت ''tu''،

but "vous" when addressing your teacher.

بەڵام کاتێک لای مامۆستاکەتی دەڵێیت ''vous''.

Even English once had something similar.

تەنانەت پێشتر ئینگلیزیش هەندێک شتی وای هەبووە.

Remember the old-timey "thou?"

بیرتە لە کۆندا ''thou'' هەبوو؟

Ironically, it was actually the informal pronoun

گەڵتەتان پێ نەیەت، لەڕاستیدا ئەوە جناوێکی نافەرمی بوو

for people you're close with,

بۆ ئەو کەسانەی کە لێتەوە نزیکن،

while "you" was the formal and polite version.

لە کاتێکدا ''you'' شێوەیەکی فەرمیو ڕێزدارانەتر بوو.

That distinction was lost

ئەو جیاکردنەوەیە نەما

when the English decided to just be polite all the time.

کە زمانی ئینگلیزی بڕیاریدا لەمە بەدوا ببێت بە زمانێکی سادە.

But the difficulty in translating "you" doesn't end there.

بەڵام ئاستەنگی وەرگێڕانی وشەی''you'' لێرەدا کۆتایی پێ نایەت.

In languages like Hausa or Korana,

لە زمانەکانی هاوسا یان کۆڕانا،

the "you" form depends on the listener's gender.

وشەی ''you''بە ڕەگەزی گوێگرەکەوە بەندە.

In many more, it depends on whether they are one or many,

زۆر جاریش، بە ژمارەکانەوە بەندە ئایە یەک کەسە یان کۆمەڵێکە،

such as with German "Du" or "ihr."

هەروەک لە زمانی ئەڵمانیدا هەمانە ''Du'' یان ''ihr.''

Even in English,

تەنانەت لە ئینگلیزیشدا،

some dialects use words like "y'all" or "youse" the same way.

لە هەندێک شێوەزاردا بە هەمان ڕێگە وشەکانی وەک''y'all'' یان ''youse'' بەکار دەهێنن.

Some plural forms, like the French "vous"

هەندێک شێوازی کۆ، وەکو لە فەڕەنسیدا''vous''

and Russian "Вы"

هەروەها لە ڕوسیشدا"Вы"

are also used for a single person

بە هەمان شێوە بۆ کەسی تاکیش بەکارهاتوە

to show that the addressee is that much more important,

بۆ پیشاندانی ئەوەی کە کەسی ئاماژە پێکراو زۆر گرینگە،

much like the royal "we."

هەروەک ئێمەی شاهانە.

And a few languages even have a specific form

تەنانەت لە هەندێک زماندا شێوەی تایبەتی

for addressing exactly two people,

بۆ دەستنیشان کردنی دوو کەسی دیاریکراو هەیە،

like Slovenian "vidva."

وەکو زمانی سلۆڤێنیان''vida''.

If that wasn't complicated enough,

ئەگەر ئەوەیان بەتەواوی ئاڵۆز نەبوبێت،

formality, number, and gender can all come into play at the same time.

دەگونجێت کە هەڵسووکەوت، ژمارە و ڕەگەز هەموویان لەیەک کاتدا بێنە پێشت.

In Spanish, "tú" is unisex informal singular,

لە زمانی ئیسپانیدا، ''tu'' بۆ هەردووک ڕەگەزی تاکە،

"usted" is unisex formal singular,

''usted'' یش شێوەیەکی فەرمییە بۆ هەردووک ڕەگەزی تاکە،

"vosotros" is masculine informal plural,

"vosotros" وشەیەکی نێرانەی نا فەرمی کۆیە،

"vosotras" is feminine informal plural,

"vosotras" یش وشەیەکی نافەرمی مێینەیە،

and "ustedes" is the unisex formal plural.

هەوەها "ustedes" فەرمیەوە بۆ هەردووک ڕەگەزی کۆیە.

Phew!

هووو!

After all that,

لەسەرو هەموو ئەوانەشەوە،

it may come as a relief

ڕەنگە وەک پشوودانێک بێت

that some languages often leave out the second person pronoun.

کە زۆرجار هەندێک زمان جێناوی کەسی دووەم قوتدەدات.

In languages like Romanian and Portuguese,

وەکو زمانەکانی ڕۆمانی و پورتوگالی،

the pronoun can be dropped from sentences

دەکرێت لە ڕستەکاندا جێناو لا ببردرێت

because it's clearly implied by the way the verbs are conjugated.

لەبەرئەوەی بەتەواوی ڕەچاوی بەکارهێنانی فرمانەکان کراوە.

And in languages like Korean, Thai, and Chinese,

هەروەها لە زمانەکانی کۆری، تاهی و چینی.

pronouns can be dropped without any grammatical hints.

بەبێ گوێدان بە ڕێسا ڕیزمانیەکان، دەگونجێت جێناوەکان لا ببردرێت.

Speakers often would rather have

قسەکەرەکان پێیان باشترە

the listener guess the pronoun from context

ئەو هەلە بە گوێگرێک بدەن کە جێناوەکا لە دەقەکەدا دەربهێنن

than use the wrong one and risk being seen as rude.

لەوەی کە جێناوێکی هەڵە بەکاربهێنن و توشی شەرمازاری ببن.

So if you're ever working as a translator

بۆیە ئەگەر تا ئێستا وەکو وەرگێڕ کارت کردوە

and come across this sentence without any context:

هەروەها توشی ئەو ڕستانە بوویت بەبێ بوونی هیچ ناوەڕۆکێک:

"You and you, no, not you,

تۆ و تۆ، نەخێر تۆ نا، تۆ،

you, your job is to translate 'you' for yourselves" ...

کاری تۆ ورگێڕانی 'you' بۆ خۆت''...
