Which is the hardest word to translate in this sentence?

この文の中で訳すのが最も難しいのは どの語でしょう？

"Know" is easy to translate.

「know（知っている）」は簡単ですね

"Pep rally" doesn't have a direct analog in a lot of languages and cultures,

「pep rally（激励会）」に ぴったりの語がない言語や文化は多くても

but can be approximated.

近い表現なら可能でしょう

But the hardest word there is actually one of the smallest: "you."

最も難しい語とは 実は最も目立たない「you」なのです

As simple as it seems,

一見シンプルですが

it's often impossible to accurately translate "you"

使われている状況をしっかり理解しないと 「you」を

without knowing a lot more about the situation where it's being said.

正確に訳すことは なかなかできません

To start with, how familiar are you with the person you're talking to?

手始めに 話している相手のことを どれぐらいよく知っていますか？

Many cultures have different levels of formality.

多くの文化では フォーマルさに段階があります

A close friend,

親しい友人なのか

someone much older or much younger,

うんと年上や うんと年下なのか

a stranger,

知らない人か

a boss.

目上かによって

These all may be slightly different "you's."

同じ「you」でも皆 少しずつ違う可能性があります

In many languages, the pronoun reflects these differences

こうした違いを 代名詞に反映させる言語は多く

through what's known as the T–V distinction.

このことは「親称・敬称」の区別として 知られています

In French, for example,

you would say "tu" when talking to your friend at school,

学校で友達と話す場合は 相手を「tu」と呼び

but "vous" when addressing your teacher.

Even English once had something similar.

Remember the old-timey "thou?"

Ironically, it was actually the informal pronoun

皮肉にも実は「thou」は 砕けた代名詞で

for people you're close with,

親しい友人に対して使われ

while "you" was the formal and polite version.

「you」の方が正式で 礼儀正しいタイプだったのです

That distinction was lost

英国が誰に対しても

when the English decided to just be polite all the time.

礼を尽くすと決めたため この区別はなくなりましたが

But the difficulty in translating "you" doesn't end there.

同時に「you」を訳す難しさが なくなったわけではありません

In languages like Hausa or Korana,

ハウサ語やコラナ語では

the "you" form depends on the listener's gender.

どの「you」にするかは 聞き手の性別によります

In many more, it depends on whether they are one or many,

さらに多くの言語では 相手が１人か大勢かによります

such as with German "Du" or "ihr."

Even in English,

英語でも同じで

some dialects use words like "y'all" or "youse" the same way.

Some plural forms, like the French "vous"

複数形である フランス語の「vous」や

and Russian "Вы"

ロシア語の「Вы」は

are also used for a single person

相手が自分よりずっと重要な人物なら

to show that the addressee is that much more important,

１人に対してでも使えます

much like the royal "we."

君主の「we」みたいなものです

And a few languages even have a specific form

２人の「you」限定で使う 特別な語を

for addressing exactly two people,

備えている言語も 少しですがあります

like Slovenian "vidva."

スロベニア語の「vidva」がそうです

If that wasn't complicated enough,

もっと複雑なのがお好みなら

formality, number, and gender can all come into play at the same time.

フォーマルさ、数、性を 全部 同時に絡めてもいいですよ

In Spanish, "tú" is unisex informal singular,

スペイン語の「tu」は男女兼用、 砕けた表現で単数です

"usted" is unisex formal singular,

「usted」は男女兼用、正式な単数

"vosotros" is masculine informal plural,

「vosotros」は男性の砕けた複数

"vosotras" is feminine informal plural,

「vosotras」は女性の砕けた複数

and "ustedes" is the unisex formal plural.

「ustedes」は男女兼用の 正式な複数です

After all that,

it may come as a relief

ホッとしてもらえるでしょう

that some languages often leave out the second person pronoun.

２人称代名詞を 落とすことが多い言語もありますよ

In languages like Romanian and Portuguese,

ルーマニア語やポルトガル語では

the pronoun can be dropped from sentences

代名詞を文から抜いても構いません

because it's clearly implied by the way the verbs are conjugated.

動詞の活用によって はっきり伝わるからです

And in languages like Korean, Thai, and Chinese,

そして韓国語、タイ語、中国語の 代名詞は

pronouns can be dropped without any grammatical hints.

文法的な手がかりが一切なくても 落として構いません

Speakers often would rather have

往々にして話し手は

the listener guess the pronoun from context

代名詞を間違えて 失礼と思われてしまうより

than use the wrong one and risk being seen as rude.

文脈から聞き手に推測してもらう方が 良いと考えます

So if you're ever working as a translator

さて もし翻訳中に

and come across this sentence without any context:

何の脈絡もなく こんな文に遭遇したら・・・

"You and you, no, not you,

「そこのyouとyou youじゃなくてyou

you, your job is to translate 'you' for yourselves" ...

youの仕事はyouたちの力だけで 『you』を訳すこと」
