When people find out I write about time management,

The second thing they assume is that I have lots of tips and tricks

generally on how to help their readers find an extra hour in the day.

And the idea is that we'll shave bits of time off everyday activities,

add it up,

I question the entire premise of this piece, but I'm always interested

in hearing what they've come up with before they call me.

we're totally getting in on the bottom side of that.

And my personal favorite, which makes sense on some level,

is to DVR your favorite shows so you can fast-forward through the commercials.

That way, you save eight minutes every half hour,

Don't watch two hours of TV a day, right?

Anyway, the idea is we'll save bits of time here and there, add it up,

we will finally get to everything we want to do.

But after studying how successful people spend their time

I think this idea has it completely backward.

Here's what I mean.

I recently did a time diary project

looking at 1,001 days in the lives of extremely busy women.

busy, busy people.

I had them keep track of their time for a week

so I could add up how much they worked and slept,

One of the women whose time log I studied

So she's dealing with the immediate aftermath that night,

That's like finding an extra hour in the day.

But I'm sure if you had asked her at the start of the week,

I'm sure she would've said what most of us would've said,

ကျွန်မတို့ အများစု ဖြေကြားကြမှာလိုပဲ “ကျွန်မ အလုပ်များတာ

which is, "No -- can't you see how busy I am?"

မတွေ့ဘူးလား၊ အချိန်မရှိဘူး”လို့ ဖြေခဲ့မှာ သေချာပါတယ်။

Yet when she had to find seven hours

ဒါပေမဲ့ သူမ အိမ်အောက်ထပ်မှာ ရေတွေ ဝပ်နေလို့

because there is water all over her basement,

ခုနစ်နာရီကို ရှာကိုရှာရမယ်ဆိုတော့၊

she found seven hours.

သူဟာ ရှာတွေ့နိုင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

And what this shows us is that time is highly elastic.

အချိန်ဆိုတာ သိပ်ကို ပျော့ပျောင်းလို့ ရနိုင်တာကို အဲဒါက ပြနေတယ်။

We cannot make more time,

but time will stretch to accommodate what we choose to put into it.

And so the key to time management

is treating our priorities

as the equivalent of that broken water heater.

To get at this,

I like to use language from one of the busiest people I ever interviewed.

By busy, I mean she was running a small business

သူမဆီမှာ အလုပ်သအား ၁၂ ဦးရှိတဲ့

with 12 people on the payroll,

ကိုယ်ပိုင် လုပ်ငန်းရှိတဲ့ အပြင်

she had six children in her spare time.

ကလေး ခြောက်ယောက်နဲ့ အလုပ်များခဲ့သူပါ။

I was getting in touch with her to set up an interview

အဲဒါတွေ အားလုံးကို သူဘယ်လိုလုပ် ကိုင်တွယ်နိုင်တာလဲ ဆိုတာ

on how she "had it all" -- that phrase.

I remember it was a Thursday morning,

Of course, right?

is that she was out for a hike,

because it was a beautiful spring morning,

and she wanted to go for a hike.

So of course this makes me even more intrigued,

and when I finally do catch up with her, she explains it like this.

She says, "Listen Laura, everything I do,

every minute I spend, is my choice."

And rather than say,

"I don't have time to do x, y or z,"

x, y (သို့) z လုပ်ဖို့ အချိန်မရှိဘူး“လို့ ပြောမယ့်အစား

she'd say, "I don't do x, y or z because it's not a priority."

သူမက၊ “x, y (သို့) z တွေဟာ ဦးစားပေးရန် မလိုလို့ ကျွန်မ မလုပ်ဘူး။” လို့ ပြောတယ်။

"I don't have time," often means "It's not a priority."

If you think about it, that's really more accurate language.

I could tell you I don't have time to dust my blinds,

ကျွန်မက ခန်းဆီးတွေကို ဖုန်စုပ်ရန် အချိန်မရှိဘူးလို့ ပြောရင်၊

but that's not true.

အမှန် မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

If you offered to pay me $100,000 to dust my blinds,

ရှင်တို့က အဲဒီခန်းဆီးတွေ သန့်ရှင်းဖို့ $၁၀၀ ၀၀၀ ပေးမယ်လို့

I would get to it pretty quickly.

Since that is not going to happen,

I can acknowledge this is not a matter of lacking time;

it's that I don't want to do it.

Using this language reminds us that time is a choice.

And granted,

there may be horrible consequences for making different choices,

I will give you that.

So how do we do that?

How do we treat our priorities

Well, first we need to figure out what they are.

I want to give you two strategies for thinking about this.

The first, on the professional side:

I'm sure many people coming up to the end of the year

What three to five things did you do that made it so amazing?

So you can write next year's performance review now.

I'm sure many of you, like me, come December,

Bit of a wretched genre of literature, really,

going on about how amazing everyone in the household is,

or even more scintillating,

But these letters serve a purpose,

which is that they tell your friends and family

what you did in your personal life that mattered to you over the year.

So this year's kind of done,

And now we need to break these down into doable steps.

So maybe you want to write a family history.

I find a really good time to do this is Friday afternoons.

Friday afternoon is what an economist might call

But we are willing to think about what those should be.

make yourself a three-category priority list: career, relationships, self.

Making a three-category list reminds us

that there should be something in all three categories.

Career, we think about;

relationships, self --

But anyway, just a short list,

two to three items in each.

Then look out over the whole of the next week,

and see where you can plan them in.

Where you plan them in is up to you.

I know this is going to be more complicated for some people than others.

I mean, some people's lives are just harder than others.

I get that.

And I don't want to minimize anyone's struggle.

But I do think that the numbers I am about to tell you are empowering.

There are 168 hours in a week.

That is a lot of time.

If you are working a full-time job, so 40 hours a week,

sleeping eight hours a night, so 56 hours a week --

that leaves 72 hours for other things.

That is a lot of time.

You say you're working 50 hours a week,

maybe a main job and a side hustle.

You say you're working 60 hours.

Well, that leaves 52 hours for other things.

You say you're working more than 60 hours.

နာရီ ၆၀ ထက် ပိုလုပ်ရသူလည်း ရှိနိုင်ပါတယ်။

Well, are you sure?

There was once a study comparing people's estimated work weeks

တချိန်တုန်းက လေ့လာမှုမှာ လူတွေ တစ်ပတ်မှာ လုပ်ခဲ့တာကို

with time diaries.

အချိန်နဲ့ မှတ်ခဲ့တယ်။

They found that people claiming 75-plus-hour work weeks

၇၅ နာရီ ကျော် လုပ်ပါတယ်လို့ ဆိုသူတွေ လက်တွေ့မှာ

were off by about 25 hours.

၂၅ နာရီလောက် မလုပ်ကြတာ တွေ့ရတယ်။

You can guess in which direction, right?

Anyway, in 168 hours a week,

I think we can find time for what matters to you.

If you want to spend more time with your kids,

you want to study more for a test you're taking,

ကိုယ်ရဲ့ စာမေးပွဲအတွက် ပိုပြီး စာကြည့်ချင်ရင်၊

you want to exercise for three hours and volunteer for two,

you can.

ရှင်တို့ လုပ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

And that's even if you're working way more than full-time hours.

ကိုယ်က အချိန်ပြည့် သုံးဆ လုပ်နေတောင် အဲဒီလို လုပ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

So we have plenty of time, which is great,

ဒီတော့ အချိန်တွေ အများကြီး ရှိတာ သိပ်ကောင်းတယ်၊

because guess what?

ဘာကြောင့်လဲ သိကြလား။

We don't even need that much time to do amazing things.

အံ့ဩစရာ အရာတွေကို လုပ်ကိုင်ရန် အဲဒီလောက် အချိန်တွေ မလိုပါ။

But when most of us have bits of time, what do we do?

ကျွန်မတို့ဆီမှာ အချိန် နည်းနည်းလေး ရှိရင် ဘာလုပ်တတ်လဲ။

Pull out the phone, right?

ဖုန်းကို ဆွဲထုတ်ယူကြတယ် မဟုတ်လား။

Start deleting emails.

အီးမေးလ်တွေကို ဖျက်တော့တယ်။

Otherwise, we're puttering around the house

အိမ်ကို ပတ်ပြီး လမ်းလျှောက် နေတတ်ဆယ်၊

or watching TV.

တီဗီကို ကြည့်နေတတ်တယ်။

But small moments can have great power.

တကယ်တော့ သေးမွှားတဲ့ တဒင်္ဂတွေက အရေးပါနိုင်တယ်။

You can use your bits of time

ရှင်တို့ဟာ ပျော်ရွှင်မှုအတွက်

for bits of joy.

အချိန်နည်းနည်းကို သုံးနိုင်ပါတယ်။

Maybe it's choosing to read something wonderful on the bus

အလုပ်ကို သွားဖို့ ဘတ်စ်ကား စီးနေစဉ် ဖတ်ဖို့ အံ့ဖွယ်

စာအုပ်ကို ရွေးနေတာ ဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်။

on the way to work.

I know when I had a job that required two bus rides

ဘတ်စ်ကား နှစ်စီးကို စီးခဲ့ရကာ မြေအောက်ရထားကို

and a subway ride every morning,

မနက်တိုင်း စီးခဲ့ရတဲ့အလုပ်မှာ၊

I used to go to the library on weekends to get stuff to read.

စနေတနင်္ဂနွေမှာ စာကြည့်တိုက်ကို သွားပြီး စာအုပ်တွေ ရွေးခဲ့ပါတယ်။

It made the whole experience almost, almost, enjoyable.

အဲဒါက ခရီးစဉ် တစ်ခုလုံးကို ပျော်ရွှင်စရာ လုပ်ပေးခဲ့တယ်။

Breaks at work can be used for meditating or praying.

အလုပ်ထဲက အားလပ်ချိန်ကို ကမ္မဌာန်း ထိုင်ရန်၊ ဆုတောင်းရန် သုံးနိုင်တယ်။

If family dinner is out because of your crazy work schedule,

ကိုယ့် အလုပ်ချိန်ကြောင့် မိသားစုနဲ့ အတူ ညစာ မစားနိုင်ရင်၊

maybe family breakfast could be a good substitute.

အဲဒါ့အစား မိစားစုအလိုက် နံနက်စာ စားလို့လည်း ရနိုင်ပါတယ်။

It's about looking at the whole of one's time

လူတစ်ယောက်ရဲ့ အချိန်တစ်ခုလုံကို ကြည့်ပြီး ကောင်းတဲ့ အရာတွေ

and seeing where the good stuff can go.

ထည့်ပေးလို့ ရမယ့် နေရာတွေကို ရှာလို့ ရနိုင်မှာပါ။

I truly believe this.

ကျွန်မကတော့ တကယ် ယုံပါတယ်။

There is time.

အချိန်ကို ရှာတွေ့မှာပါ။

Even if we are busy,

ကျွန်မတို့ အလုပ်များနေတောင်မှ၊

we have time for what matters.

အရေးကြီးတာတွေ အတွက် အချိန် ရှိတတ်တယ်။

And when we focus on what matters,

ကိုယ့်အတွက် အရေးကြီးတာကို အာရုံစိုက်လာရင်၊

we can build the lives we want

ကျွန်မတို့ ဆီမှာ ရှိနေတဲ့ အချိန်ထဲ

in the time we've got.

ကိုယ် လိုချင်တာကို တည်ဆောက်နိုင်ကြတယ်။
