Today I want to talk about the meaning of words,

ဒီနေ့ စကားလုံးတွေရဲ့ အနက်အဓိပ္ပါယ် အကြောင်း ကျွန်တော်ပြောချင်တယ်။

how we define them

ကျွန်တော်တို့ အနက်ဖွင့်ပုံ

and how they, almost as revenge,

ဒါတွေက ကျွန်တော်တို့ကို ဘယ်လို တန်ပြန်လုနီးလောက်

define us.

အနက်ဖွင့်ကြပုံကိုပါ။

The English language is a magnificent sponge.

အင်္ဂလိပ်ဘာသာစကားဟာ အံ့ဖွယ် ရေမြှုပ်တစ်ခုပါ။

I love the English language. I'm glad that I speak it.

ကျွန်တော် အင်္ဂလိပ်ဘာသာကို နှစ်သက်တယ်။ ပြောရတာ ပျော်တယ်။

But for all that, it has a lot of holes.

အဲလို မှန်ပေမဲ့ ဟာပေါက်တွေလည်း အများကြီး။

In Greek, there's a word, "lachesism"

ဂရိမှာ "lachesism" ဆိုတဲ့စကားလုံးရှိတယ်။

which is the hunger for disaster.

ဒါက ဘေးအန္တရာယ်ကို ဆာလောင်မှုပါ။

You know, when you see a thunderstorm on the horizon

မိုးကုတ်စက်ဝိုင်းမှာ မိုးသက်မုန်တိုင်း တစ်ခု မြင်တဲ့အခါ သင်ကိုယ်တိုင်

and you just find yourself rooting for the storm.

မုန်တိုင်းကို အားပေးနေတဲ့ အဖြစ်သွားရောက်သွားတယ်။

In Mandarin, they have a word "yù yī" --

မန်ဒရင်းမှာ"yù yī" ဆိုတဲ့ စကားလုံးရှိတယ်

I'm not pronouncing that correctly --

ကျွန်တော့ အသံထွက်က မမှန်ပါဘူး။

which means the longing to feel intensely again

အဓိပ္ပါယ်က ပြင်းပြင်းကြီး ထပ်ခံစားဖို့ တောင့်တခြင်းတဲ့။

the way you did when you were a kid.

ကလေးတုန်းက သင်လုပ်ခဲ့ပုံအတိုင်းပါ။

In Polish, they have a word "jouska"

ပိုလန်ဘာသာမှာတော့ "jouska" ဆိုတဲ့ စကာလုံးရှိတယ်။

which is the kind of hypothetical conversation

ဒါက သင့်ခေါင်းမှာ တသသ ဆင်နွဲနေတဲ့

that you compulsively play out in your head.

စိတ်ကူးသက်သက် စကားပြောခန်းမျိုးပါ။

And finally, in German, of course in German,

နောက်ဆုံး ဂျာမန်ဘာသာမှာ ၊ တကယ်ပဲ ဂျာမန်မှာပါ။

they have a word called "zielschmerz"

သူတို့မှာ "zielschmerz" ဆိုတဲ့ စကားလုံးရှိတယ်။

which is the dread of getting what you want.

ဆိုလိုတာက လိုချင်တာရမှာကို ပူပန်ခြင်းတဲ့။

Finally fulfilling a lifelong dream.

အဆုံး တစ်သက်တာ အိပ်မက်ကို ဖြည့်ဆည်းတာပါ။

I'm German myself, so I know exactly what that feels like.

ကျွန်တော်ကိုယ်တိုင်က ဂျာမန်ဆိုတော့ ဒါက ဘယ်လိုခံစားရတာ သိတာပေါ့။

Now, I'm not sure if I would use any of these words

as I go about my day,

but I'm really glad they exist.

But the only reason they exist is because I made them up.

I am the author of "The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows,"

because we don't have the words to do it.

And about halfway through this project,

I defined "sonder,"

"sonder"ကို အနက်ဖွင့်ခဲ့တယ်။

the idea that we all think of ourselves as the main character

and everyone else is just extras.

But in reality, we're all the main character,

And so as soon as I published that,

I got a lot of response from people

saying, "Thank you for giving voice to something I had felt all my life

but there was no word for that."

That's the power of words,

And it was not long after that

that I started to notice sonder

being used earnestly in conversations online,

and not long after I actually noticed it,

စတင်သတိထားမိတယ်။ ဒါပြီး သိပ်မကြာခင်မှာ

I caught it next to me in an actual conversation in person.

ဒါကို ကျွန်တော့ဘေးကပ်ပြီး လူကိုယ်တိုင် တကယ့် စကားပြောဆိုတာ ကြားမိတယ်။

There is no stranger feeling than making up a word

စကားလုံးတစ်လုံးကို ဖန်တီးထားပြီး အပိုင်အဖြစ် စိတ်မှာ

and then seeing it take on a mind of its own.

မှတ်ယူတာ မြင်ရထာထက် ပိုထူးဆန်းတဲ့ ခံစားချက်မရှိပါဘူး။

I don't have a word for that yet, but I will.

I'm working on it.

I started to think about what makes words real,

because a lot of people ask me,

လူအတော်များများက မေးကြလို့ပါ၊

the most common thing I got from people is,

လူတွေဆီကရတဲ့ အမေးဆုံးက

"Well, are these words made up? I don't really understand."

"ကောင်းပြီ၊ ဒီစကားလုံးတွေက ဖန်တီးထားတာလား၊ တကယ်ကို နားမလည်ဘူးဗျာ။"

And I didn't really know what to tell them

သူတို့ကို ဘာပြောရမလဲ တကယ် နားမလည်ခဲ့ဘူး။

because once sonder started to take off,

အကြောင်းက sonder က စအသုံးတွင်တော့

who am I to say what words are real and what aren't.

ဘယ်စာလုံးတွေက အစစ်ဟုတ်၊ မဟုတ် ဘယ်သူကို ပြောရမှာလဲ။

And so I sort of felt like Steve Jobs, who described his epiphany

သူ့ရဲ့ အမြင်ဉာဏ်ကို သရုပ်ဖော်ခဲ့တဲ့ Steve Jobs လိုမျိုး ခံစားမိတယ်၊

as when he realized that most of us, as we go through the day,

we just try to avoid bouncing against the walls too much

that this world was built by people no smarter than you,

then you can reach out and touch those walls

and even put your hand through them

and realize that you have the power to change it.

And when people ask me, "Are these words real?"

"ဒီစကားလုံးတွေက တကယ်လား"လို့ လူတွေမေးတဲ့အခါ

I had a variety of answers that I tried out.

စမ်းထားတဲ့ အဖြေစုံ ကျွန်တော့မှာ ရှိခဲ့တယ်။

Some of them made sense. Some of them didn't.

တစ်ချို့က အဓိပ္ပါယ်ရှိပြီး တစ်ချို့က မရှိဘူး။

But one of them I tried out was,

ဒါပေမဲ့ စမ်းထားတဲ့တစ်ခုက

"Well, a word is real if you want it to be real."

"ကဲ၊ စကားလုံးတစ်လုံးဟာ သင်တကယ် ဖြစ်ချင်ရင် တကယ်ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။"

The way that this path is real because people wanted it to be there.

ဒီလမ်းကြောင်းတကယ်ဖြစ်တာက လူတွေက ဒါကို အဲဒီမှာ တကယ်ဖြစ်ချင်လို့ပါ။

(Laughter)

It happens on college campuses all the time.

ကောလိပ်ကျောင်းဝင်းတွေမှာ တစ်ချိန်လုံးဖြစ်တယ်။

It's called a "desire path."

"အာသီသ လမ်းလေး" လို့ခေါ်တယ်

But then I decided, what people are really asking

ဒါပေမဲ့ နောက် ဆုံးဖြတ်လိုက်တယ်၊ လူတွေတကယ် မေးနေတာက

when they're asking if a word is real, they're really asking,

စကာလုံးတစ်လုံးဟာ တကယ်လားလို့ မေးတဲ့အခါ သူတို့ တကယ်မေးနေတာပါ။

"Well, how many brains will this give me access to?"

"ကဲ ဦးနှောက်က ဘယ်နှစ်ခု ကျွန်တော့ကို ဝင်ခွင့်ပေးမလဲ၊"

Because I think that's a lot of how we look at language.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ အများအပြားက ဘာသာစကား ကြည့်ပုံလို့ ထင်တယ်။

A word is essentially a key

စကားလုံးတစ်လုံးဟာ လူတစ်ချို့ရဲ့

that gets us into certain people's heads.

ခေါင်းတွေထဲရောက်ဖို့ မရှိမဖြစ် အခရာပါ။

And if it gets us into one brain,

ဒါက ကျွန်တော်တို့ကို ဦးနှောက် တစ်လုံးထဲ ရောက်ရင်

it's not really worth it,

ဒါက မတန်ပါဘူး။

not really worth knowing.

တကယ်ကို သိရတာ မတန်ပါဘူး။

Two brains, eh, it depends on who it is.

ဦးနှောက်နှစ်လုံး၊ ဘယ်သူဆိုတာတော့ မူတည်တာပေါ့၊

A million brains, OK, now we're talking.

And so a real word is one that gets you access to as many brains as you can.

တကယ့်စကားလုံးက တတ်နိုင်သလောက် ဦးနှောက် အများအပြားဆီ သင့်ကို ရောက်စေတဲ့ဟာပါ။

That's what makes it worth knowing.

ဒါက သိထိုက်တဲ့ စကားလုံး ဖြစ်အောင် လုပ်တာပါ။

Incidentally, the realest word of all by this measure is this.

စကားမစပ် ဒီတိုင်းတာမှကနေ အစစ်မှန်ဆုံး စကားလုံးက ဒါပါ။

That's it.

ဒါပါပဲ။

The realest word we have.

ကျွန်တော်တို့မှာ ရှိတဲ့

That is the closest thing we have to a master key.

အစစ်ဆုံး၊၊ အနီးစပ်ဆုံး အရာအတွက် သော့တူပါ။

That's the most commonly understood word in the world,

ဒါက ကမ္ဘာကြီးထဲမှာ ဘယ်အရာမှာဖြစ်ဖြစ် အများအားဖြင့်

no matter where you are.

နားလည်တဲ့ စကားလုံးပါ။

The problem with that is,

ဒါနဲ့ ပတ်သက်တဲ့ ပြဿနာက

no one seems to know what those two letters stand for.

ဒီစာလုံးနှစ်လုံးက ဘာကို ကိုယ်စားပြုတာ ဘယ်သူမှ သိပုံမရတာပါ

Which is kind of weird, right?

တော်တော်ကြောင်တဲ့ စကားလုံးမျိုးပါ။

I mean, it could be a misspelling of "all correct," I guess,

ဆိုလိုတာက "all correct" ဆိုတာကို စာလုံးပေါင်းမှားတာလို့ ထင်တယ်။

or "old kinderhook."

(သို့) "old kinderhook"ပါ

No one really seems to know, but the fact that it doesn't matter

တကယ်က ဘယ်သူမှ မသိကြပုံပါ။ ဒါပေမဲ့ တကယ့်အချက်က စကားလုံးတွေကို

says something about how we add meaning to words.

ဘယ်လို အဓိပ္ပါယ်ထည့်သွင်းလို့ ပြောတာက အရေးမပါပါဘူး။

The meaning is not in the words themselves.

အဓိပ္ပါယ်ဆိုတာက စကားလုံးတွေ ကိုယ်၌မှာ ကို မဟုတ်ဘူး။

We're the ones that pour ourselves into it.

ကျွန်တော်တို့က ဒီအထဲကို ကိုယ်တိုင်ကို သွန်းလောင်းသူတွေပါ။

And I think, when we're all searching for meaning in our lives,

ထင်မိတာက ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဘဝတွေမှာ အားလုံးဟာ အဓိပ္ပါယ်ကိုရှာနေတဲ့အခါ၊

and searching for the meaning of life,

ဘဝအဓိပ္ပါယ်ကို ရှာဖွေနေတဲ့အခါ၊

I think words have something to do with that.

စကားလုံးတွေမှာ ဒါနဲ့ဆိုင်တဲ့ တစ်ခုခု ရှိတယ်လို့ ထင်ပါတယ်။

And I think if you're looking for the meaning of something,

အဓိပ္ပါယ် တစ်ခုခုကို သင်ရှာတယ်ဆိုရင် အဘိဓာန်ဟာ

the dictionary is a decent place to start.

စတင်ဖို့ ကောင်းမွန်တဲ့ နေရာလို့ ထင်ပါတယ်။

It brings a sense of order

ဒါက ပရမ်းပတာဖြစ်တဲ့ ဒီလောကကြီးဆီ

to a very chaotic universe.

အစီအစဉ်ကျတဲ့ အနက်ကို ယူလာပါတယ်။

Our view of things is so limited

အကြောင်းအရာတွေရဲ့ ကျွန်တော်တို့အမြင်က

that we have to come up with patterns and shorthands

and try to figure out a way to interpret it

We need words to contain us, to define ourselves.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ပါဖို့၊ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို အနက်ဖွင့်ဖို့ စကားလုံးတွေလိုတယ်။

I think a lot of us feel boxed in

အမျာအပြားဟာ သုံးတဲ့ စကားလုံးတွေရဲ့

by how we use these words.

ဘောင်ခတ်တာ ခံနေရတယ်လို့ ထင်ပါတယ်။

We forget that words are made up.

စကားလုံးတွေဟာ ဖန်တီးထားတာဆိုတာကို မေ့နေကြတယ်။

It's not just my words. All words are made up,

ကျွန်တော့ စကားလုံးတွေသာမက အားလုံး ဖန်တီးထားပေမဲ့

but not all of them mean something.

အားလုံးတော့ အနက်တစ်ခုခု မဆောင်ပါ။

We're all just sort of trapped in our own lexicons

ကျွန်တော်တို့အားလုံးဟာ ကျွန်တော်တို့လို မဟုတ်တဲ့ လူတွေနဲ့

that don't necessarily correlate with people who aren't already like us,

and so I think I feel us drifting apart a little more every year,

They don't have meaning. We do.

And I'd like to leave you with a reading

ကျွန်တော် အနှစ်သက်ဆုံး ဒဿနပညာရှင် တွေထဲက တစ်ဦးဆီက

from one of my favorite philosophers,

ဖတ်မိတာလေးတစ်ခုကို ချန်ထားခဲ့ချင်ပါတယ်။

Bill Watterson, who created "Calvin and Hobbes."

but it is still allowed,

and I think you'll be happier for the trouble."
