نەخۆشی کۆلێر لە هایتی

for the first time in over 50 years

بۆ یەکەم جار لەدوای تێپەڕ بوونی پەنجا ساڵ

last October.

There was no way to predict

هیچ ڕێگەیەک نەبوو بۆ پێشبینی کردنی

how far it would spread through water supplies

and how bad the situation would get.

And not knowing where help was needed

always ensured that help was in short supply

in the areas that needed it most.

We've gotten good at predicting and preparing for storms

and here's why.

Right now, if you want to test water in the field,

you need a trained technician,

تۆ پێویستت بەمەشقی تەکنیکی یە،

expensive equipment like this,

مادەی گرانبەهای وەکو ئەمە،

and you have to wait about a day

و پێویستە چاوەڕێبکەی بۆ ماوەی ڕۆژێک

for chemical reactions to take place and provide results.

It's too slow

to get a picture of conditions on the ground

Most of the information that we collected on the cholera outbreak

didn't come from testing water;

لە تاقیکردنەوەی ئاودا وەرنەگیرا بوو:

it came from forms like this,

لەم شتانە وەرگیرا بوو،

which documented all the people

کە هەموو خەڵک تۆماریان کردووە

we failed to help.

ئێمە نەمانتوانی یارمەتیان بدەین.

Countless lives have been saved

دەتوانرا ژیانی زۆر بپارێزین

by canaries in coalmines --

--بەهۆی باڵندەی کەناری لە قەراغی کواڵمنایس

a simple and invaluable way

ڕێگەیەکی سادە و بێ هاوتا و بەنرخ

for miners to know whether they're safe.

بۆ ئەوەی بزانرێت ئەم کانزایانە سەلامەتن یان نا.

I've been inspired by that simplicity as I've been working on this problem

من سەرسام بووم بە سادەیی ئەم کێشەی ئیشم لەسەر دەکرد

with some of the most hardworking and brilliant people I've ever known.

لەگەڵ کۆمەڵێک کەسی بەتوانا و کارامە کە تا ئێستا لە ژیانم ناسیبێتم.

We think there's a simpler solution to this problem --

ئیمە وابیردەکەینەوە چارەسەرێکی ئاسانتر هەیە --بۆ ئەو کێشەیە

one that can be used

دانەیەکیان کە لەوانەیە بەکاربهێنرێت

by people who face conditions like this everyday.

لە لایەن خەڵکی کە هەموو ڕۆژێک ڕووبەڕووی ئەو بارودۆخە دەبنەوە.

It's in its early stages,

ئەوە لە قۆناغە زوەکاندایە،

but this is what it looks like right now.

بەڵام ئێستا بەم شێوەیە.

We call it the Water Canary.

It's a fast, cheap device

ئەمە خێرایە، ئامێرێکی هەرزانە

that answers an important question:

Is this water contaminated?

It doesn't require any special training.

And instead of waiting for chemical reactions to take place,

it uses light.

That means there's no waiting

To test water, you simply insert a sample

it either displays a red light, indicating contaminated water,

What that means is that each reading can be automatically transmitted to servers

Our goal over the next year is to get Water Canary ready for the field
