I came here today to talk about what's wrong with our food system.

First of all, I would like to say

that I'm really amazed at how easily kids are led to believe

and pretty much everywhere else you look.

It seems to me like corporations

are always trying to get kids, like me,

부모님을 졸라

to get their parents to buy stuff

사실은 우리나 지구에게 좋지도 않은 음식들을

that really isn't good for us or the planet.

사게 만드는 것 같다고 생각해요.

Little kids, especially,

특히 어린 아이들은

are attracted by colorful packaging

색상이 화려한 포장과 플라스틱 장난감에

and plastic toys.

현혹되기 십상입니다.

I must admit, I used to be one of them.

물론 저도 그런 아이들 중 한 명이었구요.

I also used to think that all of our food

저는 또 우리가 먹는 모든 음식이

came from these happy, little farms

돼지가 진흙에서 뒹굴고 소들이 풀을 뜯어 먹는

where pigs rolled in mud and cows grazed on grass all day.

행복하고 작은 농장에서 만들어졌다고 생각했었죠.

What I discovered was this is not true.

저는 그것이 사실이 아니라는 것을 알았어요.

I began to look into this stuff

저는 이 문제를, 인터넷과

on the Internet, in books and in documentary films,

각종 책들과 다큐멘터리 영화와

in my travels with my family.

가족 여행을 통해 알게 되었지요.

I discovered the dark side of the industrialized food system.

저는 산업화된 푸드 시스템의 어두운면을 발견했어요.

First, there's genetically engineered seeds and organisms.

첫째, 거기에는 유전자를 조작한 씨앗과 생물들이 있어요.

That is when a seed is manipulated in a laboratory

그것은 씨앗이 실험실에서 조작되는 것인데

to do something not intended by nature --

그 조작은 씨앗의 태생적인 특성을 거스르는 것이지요

like taking the DNA of a fish

예를 들면 생선에서 DNA를 추출해

and putting it into the DNA of a tomato. Yuck.

그것을 토마토에 넣는 식이죠 -- 우엑.

Don't get me wrong, I like fish and tomatoes,

오해 하지 마세요. 저는 생선과 토마토를 좋아합니다,

but this is just creepy.

하지만 이건 좀 무섭네요.

The seeds are then planted, then grown.

이 씨앗들이 심겨지고, 자라납니다.

The food they produce have been proven

그들이 만든 이 음식들은 동물 실험 결과

to cause cancer and other problems in lab animals,

암을 비롯한 다른 질병을 유발시킬 수 있다고 해요.

and people have been eating food produced this way

1990년대부터 사람들은 이런 방식으로 가공된 음식들을

since the 1990s.

먹어왔어요.

And most folks don't even know they exist.

Did you know rats that ate genetically engineered corn

had developed signs of liver and kidney toxicity?

독소의 징후들이 발견된다는 사실을 아셨나요?

These include kidney inflammation and lesions and increased kidney weight.

Yet almost all the corn we eat

has been altered genetically in some way.

Conventional farmers use chemical fertilizers

일반적인 농부들은 화석 연료로 만든

made from fossil fuels

that they mix with the dirt to make plants grow.

흙에다 섞어 줌으로써 식물들이 잘 자라게 하죠.

They do this because they've stripped the soil from all nutrients

그들이 화학비료를 사용하는 이유는, 해마다 같은 작물을 반복해서 심어서

from growing the same crop over and over again.

흙에 있었던 영양분을 다 써버렸기 때문이에요.

Next, more harmful chemicals are sprayed on fruits and vegetables,

그런 다음에, 잡초와 벌레들을 제거하기 위해

like pesticides and herbicides,

살충제와 제초제 같은 더 해로운 농약들을

to kill weeds and bugs.

과일과 채소에 뿌려요.

When it rains, these chemicals seep into the ground,

비가 오면, 이 농약들은 땅으로 스며들거나,

or run off into our waterways,

우리의 수로로 흘러들어와서

poisoning our water too.

우리의 식수 또한 오염시키죠.

Then they irradiate our food, trying to make it last longer,

so it can travel thousands of miles

from where it's grown to the supermarkets.

So I ask myself,

how can I change? How can I change these things?

This is what I found out.

I discovered that there's a movement for a better way.

Now a while back,

얼마전까지만 해도,

I wanted to be an NFL football player.

저는 NFL 풋볼 선수가 되고 싶었어요.

I decided that I'd rather be an organic farmer instead.

그것 대신에 저는 유기농 농부가 되기로 결심했어요.

And that way I can have a greater impact on the world.

This man, Joel Salatin, they call him a lunatic farmer

because he grows against the system.

Since I'm home-schooled,

저는 홈스쿨링을 하기 때문에,

I went to go hear him speak one day.

This man, this "lunatic farmer,"

doesn't use any pesticides, herbicides,

or genetically modified seeds.

And so for that, he's called crazy by the system.

I want you to know that we can all make a difference

저는 여러분이, 다른 선택들을 하고,

by making different choices,

우리의 삶을 잘 아는 지역 농부들이나 이웃으로부터

by buying our food directly from local farmers,

음식을 직거래로 구입함으로써

or our neighbors who we know in real life.

우리 모두가 변화를 만들 수 있다는 걸 아셨으면 해요.

Some people say organic or local food is more expensive,

어떤 사람들은 유기농이나 현지 생산된 채소가 더 비싸다고 말해요,

but is it really?

정말 그럴까요?

With all these things I've been learning about the food system,

제가 푸드 시스템에 대해 배운 모든 것을 바탕으로 봤을 때,

it seems to me that we can either pay the farmer,

우리는 농부에게 값을 치르거나, 혹은 병원비를 내거나

or we can pay the hospital.

둘 중 하나가 되는 것 같아요.

Now I know definitely which one I would choose.

I want you to know that there are farms out there --

제가 말씀드리고 싶은 것은, 어떤 농장에는

like Bill Keener in Sequatchie Cove Farm in Tennessee --

whose cows do eat grass

제가 생각했던 것처럼

and whose pigs do roll in the mud, just like I thought.

풀을 뜯어 먹는 소들이 있고 진흙에서 구르는 돼지가 있어요.

Sometimes I go to Bill's farm and volunteer,

종종 저는 빌 아저씨의 농장에 가서 봉사를 해요,

so I can see up close and personal

제가 먹는 고기가 어디에서 오는지

where the meat I eat comes from.

가까이서 직접 볼 수 있게 말이에요.

I want you to know that I believe

kids will eat fresh vegetables and good food

if they know more about it and where it really comes from.

I want you to know that there are farmers' markets

저는 여러분이, 각 지역 사회에 농산물 직거래 장터가

in every community popping up.

생겨나고 있다는 것을 아셨으면 해요.

I want you to know that me, my brother and sister

저는 여러분이, 저와 저의 형제 자매들이

actually like eating baked kale chips.

실제로 구운 케일 칩을 먹는 것을 좋아한다는 걸 아셨으면 합니다.

I try to share this everywhere I go.

저는 제가 가는 모든곳에서 이 사실을 공유하려고 노력해요.

Not too long ago,

바로 얼마전에,

my uncle said that he offered my six-year-old cousin cereal.

제 삼촌이 말하길, 그가 저의 6살짜리 사촌에게 시리얼을 주는데,

He asked him if he wanted organic Toasted O's

어떤 걸 원하는지 물어보았다고 해요. 유기농의 Toasted O's,

or the sugarcoated flakes --

you know, the one with the big striped cartoon character on the front.

아시잖아요, 커다란 줄무늬의 만화 캐릭터가 앞면에 있는 시리얼 말이에요.

My little cousin told his dad

저의 어린 사촌이 그의 아빠에게 말하길

that he would rather have the organic Toasted O's cereal

그는 유기농의 Toasted O's를 먹겠다고 했대요,

because Birke said he shouldn't eat sparkly cereal.

왜냐하면, 버크가 그러는데 그는 요란한 시리얼을 먹지 않는다고 했다고요.

And that, my friends, is how we can make a difference
