I mean I'm nervous enough as it is.

But I am not as nervous as I was five weeks ago.

Five weeks ago I had total hip replacement surgery.

5週間前、私は人工股関節全置換術を受けました

Do you know that surgery?

Electric saw, power drill, totally disgusting

Anyway, I did have a really big epiphany around the situation,

とにかく、手術にあたって本当に大きなひらめきを得ました

so Chris invited me to tell you about it.

それでクリスに話をする様に誘われたの

But first you need to know two things about me.

でも最初に、私に関する2つの事を知ってもらいたいのです

Just two things.

2つだけです

I'm Canadian, and I'm the youngest of seven kids.

私はカナダ人で、7人兄弟の末っ子です

Now, in Canada, we have that great healthcare system.

カナダには素晴らしい医療制度があり

That means we get our new hips for free.

新しい股関節も無料で手に入ります

And being the youngest of seven,

そして7人の最後という立場から

I have never been at the front of the line for anything. OK?

私は今まで最前列に来る事はありませんでした　でしょ？

So my hip had been hurting me for years.

何年間もお尻が痛むので

I finally went to the doctor, which was free.

遂に医者に診てもらい - 無料なのですが -

And she referred me to an orthopedic surgeon, also free.

その医者は整形外科医を紹介してくれました - これも無料です -

Finally got to see him after 10 months of waiting -- almost a year.

10か月待って、その整形外科医に会えました - ほぼ1年です -

That is what free gets you.

それが無料という事なのですね

I met the surgeon, and he took some free X-rays,

整形外科医に見てもらい、無料のレントゲンを撮りました

and I got a good look at them. And you know,

よくよくそのレントゲン写真を見てみると

even I could tell my hip was bad,

私でさえ自分の股関節が悪い事が分かりました

and I actually work in marketing.

So he said, "Allison, we've got to get you on the table.

I'm going to replace your hip -- it's about an 18-month wait."

18 more months.

I'd already waited 10 months, and I had to wait 18 more months.

もう10か月も待ったのに、更に18か月待たなければならない

You know, it's such a long wait that I actually

こんなにも長く待たされるということで

started to even think about it in terms of TEDs.

TED についても考え始めました

I wouldn't have my new hip for this TED.

新しいお尻でこの TED に出る事もなければ

I wouldn't have my new hip for TEDGlobal in Africa.

新しいお尻との TEDGlobal in Africa も無し

I would not have my new hip for TED2008.

TED2008 に新しいお尻では来れないでしょう

I would still be on my bad hip. That was so disappointing.

今までと同じお尻で.. とてもがっかりしました

So, I left his office and I was walking through the hospital,

診察室を出て、病院の中を歩いているときに

and that's when I had my epiphany.

ひらめいたのです

This youngest of seven had to get herself to the front of the line.

この7人兄弟の末っ子が最前列に来るときが来たのです

Oh yeah.

Oh yeah.

Can I tell you how un-Canadian that is?

それがどれほどカナダ風で無いことか分かりますか？

We do not think that way.

そういう風に我々は考えません

We don't talk about it. It's not even a consideration.

それを話す事もありませんし、考える事すらありません

In fact, when we're traveling abroad, it's how we identify fellow Canadians.

実はそれが海外の旅行先で他のカナダ人を見つける目印なのです

"After you." "Oh, no, no. After you."

「お先にどうぞ」「いえいえ、あなたからどうぞ」

Hey, are you from Canada? "Oh, me too! Hi!"

「もしかしてカナダからですか？」「あなたもですか！」

"Great! Excellent!"

「あらまぁ！」

So no, suddenly I wasn't averse to butting any geezer off the list.

急に私は面倒な人達をリストから押し出す事に躊躇しない様になりました

Some 70-year-old who wanted his new hip

70歳の老人がゴルフやガーデンングを楽しむ為に

so he could be back golfing, or gardening.

新しい股関節を手に入れたい？

No, no. Front of the line.

No, no. 先にこっちをどうにかしなさい

So by now I was walking the lobby, and of course, that hurt,

それで病院のロビーを歩いていたのですが、お尻のせいで

because of my hip, and I kind of needed a sign.

それすら痛いものです　私にはサインが必要でした

And I saw a sign.

そしてそのサインを見つけました

In the window of the hospital's tiny gift shop there was a sign

病院の小さなギフトショップの窓にそのサインはありました

that said, "Volunteers Needed." Hmm.

「ボランティア募集中」と

Well, they signed me up immediately.

彼らはすぐに私を受け入れてくれましたよ

No reference checks. None of the usual background stuff, no.

They were desperate for volunteers

病院のギフトショップで働くボランティアの平均年齢は75歳で

because the average age of the volunteer at the hospital gift shop was 75.

Yeah. They needed some young blood.

そう、新しい血を必要としていたわけです

So, next thing you know, I had my bright blue volunteer vest,

その次は、私はボランティアの青いチョッキを着て

I had my photo ID, and I was fully trained by my 89-year-old boss.

写真付きのIDをもらって、89歳の上司から訓練を受けていました

I worked alone.

店で働くのは私だけで

Every Friday morning I was at the gift shop.

毎週金曜日の朝にはギフトショップにいました

While ringing in hospital staff's Tic Tacs,

病院スタッフのタイムスタンプを押しながら

I'd casually ask, "What do you do?"

何気なく「あなたの仕事は？」と訊きます

Then I'd tell them, "Well, I'm getting my hip replaced -- in 18 months.

次に「私は股関節を取り替えてもらうの -- 18か月後に

It's gonna be so great when the pain stops. Ow!"

この痛みが無くなったらどんなに素晴らしいか！」と言います

All the staff got to know the plucky, young volunteer.

スタッフ全員がこの健気な若いボランティアを知る様になりました

My next surgeon's appointment was, coincidentally,

次の整形外科医との予定は、偶然にも

right after a shift at the gift shop.

ギフトショップでの勤務時間の直後でした

So, naturally, I had my vest and my identification.

当然わたしはチョッキとIDで入っていって

I draped them casually over the chair in the doctor's office.

何気なくそれらを診察室の椅子にかけておきました

And you know, when he walked in,

そして、彼が部屋に入ってきた時

I could just tell that he saw them.

チョッキとIDに目がいったのが分かりました

Moments later, I had a surgery date just weeks away,

その後すぐ、私の手術予定日は数週間後となり、

and a big fat prescription for Percocet.

鎮痛薬の為の分厚い処方箋を手にしていました

Now, word on the street was that it was actually

皆は、私のボランティア精神が

my volunteering that got me to the front of the line.

最前列に運んでくれたことになっているのですが

And, you know, I'm not even ashamed of that.

私はそれを恥ずかしいとは思っていません

Two reasons.

2つの理由があります

First of all, I am going to take such good care of this new hip.

なによりまず、私はこの新しいお尻をとても大事にします

But also I intend to stick with the volunteering,

しかし同時にこの「ひらめき」のきっかけとなった

which actually leads me to the biggest epiphany of them all.

ボランティアも続けていくつもりです

Even when a Canadian cheats the system,

カナダ人がシステムをいかさまする時には

they do it in a way that benefits society.

皆の利益になる様にいかさまを働くのです
