What I'm going to argue today is that having good judgment,

One thing that's really interesting to me about the Dreyfus Affair

is this question of why the officers were so convinced

Well, this is a case of what scientists call "motivated reasoning."

It's this phenomenon in which our unconscious motivations,

Probably most of you have never persecuted

but maybe you've followed sports or politics, so you might have noticed

That's a good call, let's not examine it too closely.

Or, maybe you've read an article or a study

that examined some controversial policy,

Our judgment is strongly influenced, unconsciously,

by which side we want to win.

And this is ubiquitous.

This shapes how we think about our health, our relationships,

how we decide how to vote,

What's most scary to me about motivated reasoning

or soldier mindset,

is how unconscious it is.

We can think we're being objective and fair-minded

and still wind up ruining the life of an innocent man.

However, fortunately for Dreyfus, his story is not over.

This is Colonel Picquart.

He's another high-ranking officer in the French Army,

and like most people, he assumed Dreyfus was guilty.

A lot of people feel like Picquart can't really be the hero of this story

Picquart is a poster child for what I call "scout mindset."

It's the drive not to make one idea win or another lose,

Why are some people, sometimes at least,

as objectively as they can?

So, just as soldier mindset is rooted in emotions

Scouts also have different values.

And above all, scouts are grounded,

ئەم کۆبوونەوەی خەسڵەتانە ئەوەیە کە توێژەرەوەکان دۆزیویانەتەوە و --

and I've also found anecdotally --

هەروەها منیش سەرگوزەشتانە ئەوەم دۆزییەوە --

predicts good judgment.

کە پێشبینی بڕیاردانی باش ئەکات. و

And the key takeaway I want to leave you with about those traits

ئەوەشی کە ئەمەوێت هەر بیرتان بێت لەسەر ئەو خەسڵەتانە

is that they're primarily not about how smart you are

ئەوەیە کە بەشێوەیەکی سەرەکی دەربارەی ئەوە نییە چەندێک زیرەکن

or about how much you know.

یان چەندێک ئەزانن.

In fact, they don't correlate very much with IQ at all.

ڕاستییەکەی، هێندە پەیوەندییان نییە بە ئاستی زیرەکییەوە.

They're about how you feel.

دەربارەی ئەوەیە هەست بە چی ئەکەیت.

There's a quote that I keep coming back to, by Saint-Exupéry.

وتەیەک هەیە کە بەردەوام ئەگەڕێمەوە سەری، هی سەنت ئێکسوپێرییە.

He's the author of "The Little Prince."

نوسەری "شازادە بچووکەکەیە."

He said, "If you want to build a ship,

وتوێتی، "ئەگەر ئەتەوێ کەشتییەک دروستکەیت،

don't drum up your men to collect wood and give orders

تەپڵ لێمەیە بۆ پیاوەکانت دار کۆکەنەوە و فەرمان دەرکەیت و

and distribute the work.

کار دابەشکەیت.

Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea."

لەجیاتی ئەوە، فێریان بکە هیوا بخوازن دەریا فراوان و بێکۆتاکە ببینن."

In other words, I claim,

بە واتایەکی تر، بەلای منەوە،

if we really want to improve our judgment as individuals

ئەگەر بەڕاستی بمانەوێت توانای بڕیاردانمان باشتر بکەین وەک تاکەکان و

and as societies,

وەک کۆمەڵگاکان،

what we need most is not more instruction in logic

ئەوەی لەهەمووی زیاتر پێویستمانە ڕێنمایی زیاتر نییە لە لۆجیکا

or rhetoric or probability or economics,

یان ڕەوانبێژی یان ئەگەر یان ئابووری،

even though those things are quite valuable.

هەرچەندە کە ئەو شتانە زۆر بەنرخیشن.

But what we most need to use those principles well

بەڵام ئەوەی لەهەموی زیاتر پێویستمانە بەکارهێنانی ئەو بنەمایانە و

is scout mindset.

شێوەی بیرکردنەوەی دیدەوانە.

We need to change the way we feel.

پێویستە شێوەی هەستکردنمان بگۆڕین.

We need to learn how to feel proud instead of ashamed

پێویستە فێربین چۆن هەست بە شانازی بکەین لەجیاتی شەرمکردن

when we notice we might have been wrong about something.

کاتێک تێبینی ئەکەین کە لەوانەیە هەڵە بووبێتین لەبارەی شتێکەوە.

We need to learn how to feel intrigued instead of defensive

پێویستە فێربین چۆن هەست بکەین سەرمان سوڕماوە وەک لەوەی بەرگری بکەین

when we encounter some information that contradicts our beliefs.

کاتێک زانیارییەک ئەبینین کە دژی باوەڕەکانی خۆمان بێت.

So the question I want to leave you with is:

کەواتە پرسیارەکەی کە ئەمەوێت بەجێتان بێڵم لەگەڵی ئەمەیە:

What do you most yearn for?

لەهەموو شتێک زیاتر ئاوات بۆ چی ئەخوازیت؟

Do you yearn to defend your own beliefs?

ئەتەوێ بەرگری لە باوەڕەکانت بکەیت؟

Or do you yearn to see the world as clearly as you possibly can?

یان ئەتەوێت بە ڕوونترین شێوە کە ئەکرێت جیهان ببینیت؟
