هەروەها كەسێكى فێرخوازم،

بۆيە لە ٢٢ ساڵيدا هەروەك ڕۆژنامەنووسێك،

I'm a writer and a journalist,

and I'm also an insanely curious person,

so in 22 years as a journalist,

I've learned how to do a lot of new things.

And three years ago, one of the things I learned how to do

was to become invisible.

I became one of the working homeless.

I quit my job as a newspaper editor

after my father died in February of that same year,

لە ئۆتۆمبێلێکی ڤان بژیم بۆ يەك ساڵ

and decided to travel.

لەوانەيە وەك يەك گەشتى كامپ درێژ بێت.

His death hit me pretty hard.

بۆیە پشیلەکەم و سەگەکەم (رۆتوەيلەر) برد

And there were a lot of things that I wanted to feel and deal with while I was doing that.

بۆ ئۆتۆمبێلی جۆری ڤان چێڤى١٩٧٥،

I've camped my whole life. And I decided

و هاژووتم بۆ خۆرئاوا،

that living in a van for a year to do this

له سێ شتى گرنگ شكسيم هێنا.

would be like one long camping trip.

So I packed my cat, my Rottweiler

يەك: كۆمەڵگە واتە

and my camping gear into a 1975 Chevy van,

ژیان لە شوێنێکی جێگیر تەنانەت كوخێك،

and drove off into the sunset,

لەگەڵ هەبوونى هەمان بەهای كەسێك.

having fully failed to realize three critical things.

دوو: شکستم هێنا لە هەست پێكردنى

نەرێى خەڵكى ديكە كه دەتوانن كار له

One: that society equates

ڕاستيەكانمان بكەن، ئەگەر رێگەیان بدەين.

living in a permanent structure, even a shack,

سێ: شكستم هێنا له درک کردن

with having value as a person.

کە ئەم بێ ماڵییە هەڵوێستێكە،

Two: I failed to realize how quickly

نەک شێوازى ژيانێك.

the negative perceptions of other people

سەرەتا، ژیان لە ڤان خۆش بوو

can impact our reality, if we let it.

لە خێوەتگەکە خۆم دەشۆرد. لە دەرەوە خواردنم دەخوارد.

Three: I failed to realize

و كاتم هەبوو بۆ پشوودان و دڵتەنگی.

that homelessness is an attitude,

not a lifestyle.

بەڵام پاشان توڕەيي و خەمۆكيەكە دەربارەى مردنى باوكم سەری هەڵداوە.

At first, living in the van was great.

كارى ڕۆژنامەوانیم كۆتايى هات و دەبوایە و زۆر کار بکەم.

I showered in campgrounds. I ate out regularly.

پارەی خەرجییەکانم بدەم.

And I had time to relax and to grieve.

بەهارێکی واخۆش

گۆڕا بۆ هاوینێکی گەرمی ناخۆش.

But then the anger and the depression about my father's death set in.

--ئەستەم بوو بچم بۆ هەر شوێنێک

My freelance job ended. And I had to get a full-time job

بەبێ ئەوەی ئاشکرا بێت--

کە پشیلەیەك و سەگێکم لەگەڵە، و زۆریش گەرم بوو.

to pay the bills.

What had been a really mild spring

پشیلەکە هاتوو چۆی دەکرد لە پەنجەرە کراوەکەی ڤانەکە.

turned into a miserably hot summer.

سەگەکەش ڕۆیشت بۆ لای سەگی تر.

And it became impossible to park anywhere --

و ئارەقەم کردبوو.

(Laughs)

-- without being very obvious

هەرکاتێک، بمتوانیبایە

that I had a cat and a dog with me, and it was really hot.

حەمامى فەرمانبەرم بەكار دەهێنا لە تەلاری نووسینگەکان.

The cat came and went through an open window in the van.

ياخود لە تەوالێتە گشتیەکان.

The doggy went into doggy day care.

And I sweated.

گەرمی شەو لە ڤانەكە لەخوارەوەی ٨٠ پلە فەهرەنایت بوو،

Whenever I could, I used

ئەستەم و ناخۆش بوو بۆ خەوتن.

employee showers in office buildings and truck stops.

.بەهۆی گەرمیەوە خۆراك تێكدەچوو.

Or I washed up in public rest rooms.

سەهۆڵی ناو سنگم دەتوایەوە لە كاتژمێرێكدا،

Nighttime temperatures in the van rarely dropped below 80 degrees Fahrenheit,

زۆر ناخۆش بوو.

making it difficult or impossible to sleep.

Food rotted in the heat.

تواناى كڕينی شوقەم نەبوو،

Ice in my ice chest melted within hours,

ڕێگەم بدات تواناى بەخێوکردنی

and it was pretty miserable.

سەگەکەم (رۆتوەيلەر) و پشيلەكەم هەبێت.

و نەمدەتوانی دەستبەرداریان بم،

بۆيە لە ئۆتۆمبێلە ڤانەكە مامەوە.

I couldn't afford to find an apartment,

or couldn't afford an apartment that would allow me

و کاتێک گەرميەكە نەخۆشی خستم

to have the Rottweiler and the cat.

نەمدەتوانی بڕۆمە ئاودەستیش کە ١٥مەتر دوور بوو

And I refused to give them up,

لە دەرەوەی ڤانەكە لە شەودا،

so I stayed in the van.

سەتل و زبڵدانم بەکاردەهێنا وەك ئاودەستێك.

كاتێك زستان دەستی پێکرد، پلەى گەرمی

And when the heat made me too sick

لەخوار بەستن بوو. و لەوێ ماينەوە.

to walk the 50 feet to the public restroom

و تووشی كۆمەڵێک گرفتی نوێ بوومەوە.

outside my van at night,

I used a bucket and a trash bag as a toilet.

هەموو شەوێک لە شوێنێكى جياواز دەوەستام

When winter weather set in, the temperatures dropped

هەر بۆئەوەی خۆم بەدوور بگرم لە پۆليسەكان.

below freezing. And they stayed there.

هەميشە سەرکەوتوو نەبووم.

And I faced a whole new set of challenges.

لە ژيانمدا هەستم بە بێ كۆنتڕۆلی دەكرد.

I parked a different place every night

so I would avoid being noticed and hassled by the police.

و نەمدەزانی كەی و چۆن ئەمە ڕوویدا،

I didn't always succeed.

بەڵام بەو خێرايە بوونم بە

But I felt out of control of my life.

نووسەرێكى بەهرەمەند و ڕۆژنامەنووس

بووم بە ئافرەتێكى دەربەدەر، ژيان لە ڤانێك،

And I don't know when or how it happened,

هەناسەى بردم،

هیچ نەگوڕابووم ژیرییەکەم هەر مابوو.

but the speed at which I went

بەهرەم، پاكيم، بەهاكانم،

from being a talented writer and journalist

to being a homeless woman, living in a van,

هەموو شتێكم وەك خۆی مايەوە.

took my breath away.

I hadn't changed. My I.Q. hadn't dropped.

لە هەندێک لایەنەوە گۆڕابووم.

زیاتر خەمم دەخوارد.

My talent, my integrity, my values,

و يەكێك منى ئاماژەکرد بۆ پزيشکی بێلانەکان.

ڕۆيشتم. سێ ڕۆژ بوو خۆم نەشۆرد بوو.

everything about me remained the same.

بۆنی ناخۆشم لێدەهات و وڕ بووبووم.

But I had changed somehow.

I spiraled deeper and deeper into a depression.

نەم دەخواردەوە.

And eventually someone referred me to a homeless health clinic.

و كاتێك چەند پياوێکی بێ لانە و

And I went. I hadn't bathed in three days.

پرۆفيسۆرێكى زانکۆ، بینییانم

I was as smelly and as depressed as anyone in line.

گوتيان، " تۆ دەربەدەر نييت. بۆچى لێرەيت؟

I just wasn't drunk or high.

ئاوارەکانی تر نەیان دەبینیم وەك دەربەدەر،

بەڵام ئاوارە بووم،

And when several of the homeless men realized that,

پاشان پرۆفيسۆرەکە گوێى گرت لە چيرۆكەکەم و گوتی,

including a former university professor,

they said, "You aren't homeless. Why are you really here?"

تۆ كارێكت هەيە. تۆ هیوات هەیە".

Other homeless people didn't see me as homeless,

".کەسی ئاوارە هیوای نییە

but I did.

کاریگەری دەرمانی دکتۆرەکە

Then the professor listened to my story and he said,

وای کرد واز لە خۆکوشتن بهێنم و بیربکەمەوە,

"You have a job. You have hope.

".ئەگەر خۆم بکوژم کەس پێی نازانێت"

The real homeless don't have hope."

A reaction to the medication the clinic gave me for my depression

left me suicidal. And I remember thinking,

هاوڕێیەکم پێی گوتم، کەمێك دوای ئەوە،

"If I killed myself, no one would notice."

کە گوێم لە تیم ڕوزێرت بوو،

ڕۆژنامەگەرێکی بەناوبانگ بوو،

قسەی دەکرد لە تەلەفزیۆنێکی ناوخۆیی.

دەربارەی ئەزموونی باوکم کە نووسی بووم،

A friend told me, shortly after that,

یەک ساڵ پێش ئەوەی بمرێت، لە کتێبێکی نوێی تیم دا.

that she had heard that Tim Russert,

قسەى دەكرد دەربارەى نووسينەکانم.

a nationally renowned journalist,

کاتێک ئەوەم زانی تیم ڕوزێرت بەڕێوەبەری، پێشووی "مێت زە پرێس،"

had been talking about me on national T.V.

An essay I'd written about my father,

دەربارەی نوسینەکانم قسەی دەکرد،

the year before he died, was in Tim's new book.

کاتێک کە لە ڤانەكە دەژیام لە وۆل مارت،

دەستم کرد بە پێکەنین.

And he was doing the talk show circuit. And he was talking about my writing.

ئێوەش پێویستە پێبکەنن

And when I realized that Tim Russert, former moderator of "Meet the Press,"

چونکه گەڕامەوە خاڵی سەرەتا،

was talking about my writing,

ئایا من نووسەرم؟ یاخود ئافرەتێکی ئاوارەم؟

while I was living in a van in a Wal-Mart parking lot,

I started laughing.

ئینجا چووم بۆ کتێبخانە. و کتێبەکەی (تیم)م دۆزیەوە.

You should too.

لەوێ وەستام. وتارەکەمم دووبارە خوێندنەوە.

(Laughter)

I started laughing

because it got to the point where,

و گریام.

was I a writer, or was I a homeless woman?

چونکە من نووسەر بووم.

من نووسەر بووم.

So I went in the bookstore. And I found Tim's book.

And I stood there. And I reread my essay.

جێگۆڕکێی ژیانی نێوان ڤان و کۆخەکەم کرد لەگەڵ چەند هاوڕێکانم.

And I cried.

دەستم بە نووسین کردەوە.

Because I was a writer.

لە هاوينى ساڵى داهاتوو دەستم کردەوە بە کاری ڕۆژنامەنووسی.

I was a writer.

Shortly after that I moved back to Tennessee.

پاداشت دەکرام و لە ئەپارتمانی خۆم دەژیام.

I alternated between living in a van and couch surfing with friends.

چیتر بێ ماڵ نەبووم

And I started writing again.

چیتر نادیار نەبووم.

هەزاران خەڵك بە سەختی كار دەکەن

By the summer of the following year I was a working journalist.

و لە ئۆتۆمبێلەکانیان دەژییێن.

I was winning awards. I was living in my own apartment.

بەڵام كۆمەڵگە بەردەوامە لە كەدارکرنیان

I was no longer homeless.

گەر لە ناو ئۆتۆمبێلەکەت بژیت یان لەسەر شەقام.

And I was no longer invisible.

Thousands of people work full and part-time jobs,

بێ ماڵ و کارکرد بێ ماڵەکان بە نادیاری دەمیننەوە.

and live in their cars.

بەڵام گەر یەکیکیت لێ بینین،

But society continues to stigmatize and criminalize

بچۆ لایان، هانیان بدە، هیوایان پێ ببەخشە.

living in your vehicle or on the streets.

گیانی مرۆڤ بە سەر هەموو شتێکدا زاڵ دەبێت ئەگەر هیوای هەبێت.

So the homeless, the working homeless, primarily remain invisible.

وەك نوێنەری بێ ماڵەکان لێرە نییم.

But if you ever meet one,

بۆ ئەوە لێرە نیم هانتان بدەم پارە بدەیت بە سواڵکەر.

engage them, encourage them, and offer them hope.

بۆ ئەوە لێرەم بڵێم، بەو ئەزموونەی کە هەمه،

The human spirit can overcome anything if it has hope.

خەڵكی لەو جییە نین کە لێی دەژین

و لێی دەخەون،

And I'm not here to be the poster girl for the homeless.

یاخود لەو دۆخەی کە ژیان بە هەرچ جۆرێک بووە پێی بەخشیون.

I'm not here to encourage you to give money to the next panhandler you meet.

But I am here to tell you that, based on my experience,

سێ ساڵ لەمەوپێش لە ڤانەكە دەژیام

people are not where they live,

لە وۆل مارت،

where they sleep,

و ئەمڕۆ لە تێد قسە دەکەم.

or what their life situation is at any given time.

هەمیشە هیوا ڕێگەیەک دەدۆزێتەوە. سوپاس.

Three years ago I was living in a van

in a Wal-Mart parking lot,

and today I'm speaking at TED.
