It's called oxytocin.

So oxytocin is a simple and ancient molecule

found only in mammals.

In rodents, it was known

So I had this idea that oxytocin might be the moral molecule.

I did what most of us do -- I tried it on some colleagues.

One of them told me,

But he was right, it was a stupid idea.

But it was testably stupid.

In other words, I thought I could design an experiment

to see if oxytocin made people moral.

Turns out it wasn't so easy.

First of all, oxytocin is a shy molecule.

Baseline levels are near zero,

without some stimulus to cause its release.

And when it's produced, it has a three-minute half-life,

and degrades rapidly at room temperature.

So this experiment would have to cause a surge of oxytocin,

Now luckily, oxytocin is produced

Then I had to measure morality.

So taking on Morality with a capital M is a huge project.

I studied one single virtue:

Why? I had shown in the early 2000s

that countries with a higher proportion of trustworthy people

are more prosperous.

So in these countries, more economic transactions occur

and more wealth is created,

So poor countries are by and large low trust countries.

So if I understood the chemistry of trustworthiness,

But I'm also a skeptic.

So what we do in my lab

Let me show you how we do that.

So we recruit some people for an experiment.

They all get $10 if they agree to show up.

We give them lots of instruction, and we never ever deceive them.

So think about this experiment for minute.

So this was the birth of vampire economics.

Make a decision and give me some blood.

So in fact, experimental economists

had run this test around the world,

and for much higher stakes,

and the consensus view

But in fact, economists were flummoxed

They assumed money is good,

why not keep it all?

That's not what we found.

We found 90 percent of the first decision-makers sent money,

But why?

Well by measuring oxytocin

we found that the more money the second person received,

the more their brain produced oxytocin,

and the more oxytocin on board,

the more money they returned.

So we have a biology of trustworthiness.

But wait. What's wrong with this experiment?

Two things.

أمرين

One is that nothing in the body happens in isolation.

الأول هو أنه لا يوجد شيء يحدث في الجسد بصورة منعزلة عن باقي الجسد

So we measured nine other molecules that interact with oxytocin,

but they didn't have any effect.

But the second is

that I still only had this indirect relationship

between oxytocin and trustworthiness.

I didn't know for sure

So to make the experiment,

I knew I'd have to go into the brain

and manipulate oxytocin directly.

I used everything short of a drill

And I found I could do it

So oxytocin is the trust molecule,

Using the oxytocin inhaler,

we ran more studies.

We showed that oxytocin infusion

increases generosity

We've also investigated

non-pharmacologic ways to raise oxytocin.

These include massage,

dancing and praying.

Yes, my mom was happy about that last one.

And whenever we raise oxytocin,

people willingly open up their wallets

and share money with strangers.

But why do they do this?

What does it feel like

when your brain is flooded with oxytocin?

To investigate this question, we ran an experiment

where we had people watch a video

of a father and his four year-old son,

and his son has terminal brain cancer.

After they watched the video, we had them rate their feelings

and took blood before and after to measure oxytocin.

The change in oxytocin

predicted their feelings of empathy.

Now this idea is not new.

A then unknown philosopher named Adam Smith

wrote a book in 1759

called "The Theory of Moral Sentiments."

In this book, Smith argued

that we are moral creatures, not because of a top-down reason,

So I tend to avoid that.

If I do something that makes you happy, I get to share your joy.

So I tend to do those things.

Now this is the same Adam Smith who, 17 years later,

I just found the molecule behind it.

You see it. I was conned.

Now we know what happens.

The victim's brain releases oxytocin,

So who are these people

who manipulate our oxytocin systems?

We found, testing thousands of individuals,

So there's a technical word for these people in my lab.

وهناك تعريف علمي نستخدمه في مخبرنا نطلقه عليهم

We call them bastards.

فنحن ندعوهم " الأوغاد "

These are not people you want to have a beer with.

فهم الأشخاص اللذين لاتريد أن تشاركهم شراب

They have many of the attributes of psychopaths.

فلديهم العديد من سمات المرضى النفسيين

Now there are other ways the system can be inhibited.

لكن الآن هناك طرق أخرى يمكن للنظام أن لا يعمل جيداً

One is through improper nurturing.

الأولى هي التربية الخاطئة

So we've studied sexually abused women,

فقد درسنا النساء اللآتي تعرضنا لتعنيف جنسي

and about half those don't release oxytocin on stimulus.

فوجدنا أن نصفهن لا يفرزن الأوكسيتوسين عندما يتحفزون جنسياً

You need enough nurturing

فأنت تحتاج إلى تربية صحيحة كافية

for this system to develop properly.

لكى يتطور هذا النظام بصورة صحيحة.

Also, high stress inhibits oxytocin.

كما أن الضغط المرتفع يقوض إفراز الأوكسيتوسين

So we all know this, when we're really stressed out,

ونحن جميعاً نعلم هذا .. فعندما نكون متوترين،

we're not acting our best.

لايمكننا أن نقدم أفضل ما عندنا.

There's another way oxytocin is inhibited, which is interesting --

هناك أيضاً سبب آخر لتقويض إفراز الأوكسيتوسين وهو مثير للفضول

through the action of testosterone.

متعلق بمستويات هرمون الذكورة التستسترون

So we, in experiments, have administered testosterone to men.

لذا فى تجربة قمنا، بحقن التستسترون للذكور

And instead of sharing money,

فبدلاً من مشاركة الأموال،

they become selfish.

أصبح الذكور " أنانيون "

But interestingly,

والأمر المثير للإهتمام،

high testosterone males are also more likely

فإن مستويات التستسترون تجعل من المرجح أن

to use their own money to punish others for being selfish.

يتستخدمون أموالهم الخاصة لمعاقبة الآخرين لكونهم أنانيون.

Now think about this. It means, within our own biology,

we have the yin and yang of morality.

We have oxytocin that connects us to others,

makes us feel what they feel.

And we have testosterone.

ولدينا التستسترون

And men have 10 times the testosterone as women,

والذكور لديهم من التستسترون 10 أضعاف ما لدى الإناث،

so men do this more than women --

لذا فالذكور يقومون بذلك أكثر من الإناث --

we have testosterone that makes us want to punish

فنحن لدينا التستسترون الذي يدفعنا لمعاقبة

people who behave immorally.

الاشخاص الذين يتصرفون برعونة ولا أخلاق.

We don't need God or government telling us what to do.

فنحن لا نحتاج التعاليم الدينية ( الله )أو الحكومة لتخبرنا ما الذي يتوجب علينا القيام به.

It's all inside of us.

فكل شيء موجود في داخلنا بيولوجياً

So you may be wondering:

ربما انتم الآن تقولون :

these are beautiful laboratory experiments,

هذه التجارب المخبرية تبدو مثيرة للإهتمام ..

do they really apply to real life?

لكن هل يمكن تطبيق هذا على أرض الواقع؟

Yeah, I've been worrying about that too.

نعم .. أنا أتسائل نفس التساؤل أيضاً

So I've gone out of the lab

لذا خرجت خارج المخبر

to see if this really holds in our daily lives.

لكي أرى ما إذا كان يتحكم بحياتنا العادية.

So last summer, I attended a wedding in Southern England.

لذا في الصيف الماضي حضرت عرس في جنوب إنجلترا

200 people in this beautiful Victorian mansion.

كان هناك 200 شخص في هذا القصر الفيكتوري الجميل.

I didn't know a single person.

لم أكن أعلم أياً منهم

And I drove up in my rented Vauxhall.

And I took out a centrifuge and dry ice

and needles and tubes.

And I took blood from the bride and the groom

and the wedding party and the family and the friends

before and immediately after the vows.

And guess what?

Weddings cause a release of oxytocin,

but they do so in a very particular way.

Who is the center of the wedding solar system?

من برأيكم هو محور ذلك النظام؟

The bride.

إنها العروس

She had the biggest increase in oxytocin.

هى التي حدث لها أعلى إرتفاع للأوكسيتوسين.

Who loves the wedding almost as much as the bride?

ومن يحب الزفاف تماماً كما تحبه العروس؟

Her mother, that's right.

والدتها ، هذا صحيح.

Her mother was number two.

فقد سجلت الوالدة ثاني أكبر إرتفاع

Then the groom's father, then the groom,

ومن ثم والد العريس ومن ثم العريس،

then the family, then the friends --

ومن ثم العائلة ثم الأصدقاء --

arrayed around the bride

like planets around the Sun.

كما تحيط الكواكب بالشمس.

So I think it tells us that we've designed this ritual

لذا أعتقد أن هذا يوضح لنا أن سبب هذا الزفاف ( الأكليل )

to connect us to this new couple,

هو لدمج هذين الزوجين كشخص واحد،

connect us emotionally.

وتواصلنا عاطفياً.

Why? Because we need them to be successful at reproducing

لماذا ؟ لأننا نريدهما ناجحين من أجل التناسل

to perpetuate the species.

وتواصل النوع.

I also worried that my trust experiments with small amounts of money

أنا أيضاً قلق بخصوص نقطة أن تجاربي مع دفعات صغيرة من المال

didn't really capture how often we actually trust our lives to strangers.

So even though I have a fear of heights,

I recently strapped myself to another human being

and I had a huge spike of oxytocin.

And there are so many ways we can connect to people.

For example, through social media.

Many people are Tweeting right now.

فالعديد من الأشخاص يتواصلون الآن عبر تويتر

So we investigated the role of social media

لذا قمنا بدراسة دور الشبكات الإجتماعية

and found the using social media

ووجدنا أن إستخدام الشبكات الإجتماعية

produced a solid double-digit increase in oxytocin.

يرفع من مستوى الأوكسيتوسين بمقدار نقطتين.

So I ran this experiment recently for the Korean Broadcasting System.

فقمت بهذه التجربة مؤخراً على نظام الإذاعة الكورية

And they had the reporters and their producers participate.

فقد عمدوا لإشراك المنتجين والمراسلين

And one of these guys, he must have been 22,

وكان أحدهم ، كان تقريباً إبن 22 عاماً

he had 150 percent spike in oxytocin.

لديه قفزة تعادل 150% في مستوى الأوكسيتوسين

I mean, astounding; no one has this.

أعني أنها قفزة مذهلة.. لا أحد كان لديه مثلها.

So he was using social media in private.

لقد كان يستخدم الشبكات الإجتماعية في خصوصية.

When I wrote my report to the Koreans,

فعندما كتبت تقريراً للكوريين

I said, "Look, I don't know what this guy was doing,"

قلت فيه " أنا لا أعلم ما الذي يقوم به هذا الشخص .."

but my guess was interacting with his mother or his girlfriend.

ولكني أعتقد انه يتواصل مع والدته أو صديقته.

They checked.

فتحققوا من الأمر.

He was interacting on his girlfriend's Facebook page.

فوجدوا أنه يتواصل على صفحة حبيبته على الفيس بوك.

There you go. That's connection.

هاكم الصلة. هذا هو التواصل.

So there's tons of ways that we can connect to other people,

حسناً .. إذا هناك عدة طرق تمكننا من التواصل مع بعضنا البعض،

and it seems to be universal.

ويبدو أن هذا الأمر أمرٌ عالمي

Two weeks ago,

منذ أسبوعين،

I just got back from Papua New Guinea

عدت من بابوا غينيا الجديدة

where I went up to the highlands --

حيث ذهبت إلى الأراضي المرتفعة --

very isolated tribes of subsistence farmers

حيث تقطن قبائل زراعية منعزلة

living as they have lived for millenia.

وتعيش كما كانت تعيش بصورة بدائية منذ دهر

There are 800 different languages in the highlands.

وكان هناك اكثر من 800 لغة مختلفة في تلك الأعالي

These are the most primitive people in the world.

هؤلاء هم الأشخاص الأكثر بدائية في العالم.

And they indeed also release oxytocin.

ولكنهم حتما يفرزون الأوكسيتوسين.

So oxytocin connects us to other people.

إذاً الأوكسيتوسين يدفعنا للتواصل مع بعضنا البعض.

Oxytocin makes us feel what other people feel.

والأوكسيتوسين يجعلنا نشعر بما يشعر به الآخرون.

And it's so easy to cause people's brains

ومن السهل جداً تحفيز عقول الناس

to release oxytocin.

على إفراز الأوكسيتوسين.

I know how to do it,

وأنا أعلم كيفية القيام بذلك،

and my favorite way to do it is, in fact, the easiest.
