I saw that people who were religious and non-religious

I thought, maybe there's some earthly basis

But I wanted to go further

than to say our brains make us moral.

I want to know if there's a chemistry of morality.

I want to know

if there was a moral molecule.

存在するのかということでした

After 10 years of experiments,

10年以上の実験を経て

I found it.

それを発見したのです

contains the moral molecule.

It's called oxytocin.

オキシトシンというものです

So oxytocin is a simple and ancient molecule

オキシトシンは単純で古い分子で

found only in mammals.

哺乳類のみに見られます

In rodents, it was known

to make mothers care for their offspring,

and in some creatures,

allowed for toleration of burrowmates.

But in humans, it was only known

to facilitate birth and breastfeeding in women,

and is released by both sexes during sex.

So I had this idea that oxytocin might be the moral molecule.

I did what most of us do -- I tried it on some colleagues.

研究者なら誰でもするように まずは同僚にぶつけたのです

One of them told me,

"Paul, that is the world's stupidist idea.

It is," he said, "only a female molecule.

「女性にだけ関係したホルモンが

It can't be that important."

But I countered, "Well men's brains make this too.

私は「男性の脳でも分泌される

There must be a reason why."

それには理由がある筈だ」と返しました

But he was right, it was a stupid idea.

But it was testably stupid.

しかし 愚かとはいえ 検証が可能です

In other words, I thought I could design an experiment

つまり オキシトシンが 人を道徳的にするかを判断する

to see if oxytocin made people moral.

実験を考案できると思ったのです

Turns out it wasn't so easy.

けれども容易ではありませんでした

First of all, oxytocin is a shy molecule.

まずオキシトシンは見つけにくく

Baseline levels are near zero,

分泌が刺激されないと

without some stimulus to cause its release.

通常のレベルは ほぼゼロなのです

And when it's produced, it has a three-minute half-life,

それにたった３分で半減し

and degrades rapidly at room temperature.

室温ではすぐに壊れてしまいます

So this experiment would have to cause a surge of oxytocin,

have to grab it fast and keep it cold.

I think I can do that.

Now luckily, oxytocin is produced

幸運にもオキシトシンは

both in the brain and in the blood,

so I could do this experiment without learning neurosurgery.

Then I had to measure morality.

So taking on Morality with a capital M is a huge project.

So I started smaller.

I studied one single virtue:

trustworthiness.

Why? I had shown in the early 2000s

that countries with a higher proportion of trustworthy people

are more prosperous.

So in these countries, more economic transactions occur

and more wealth is created,

alleviating poverty.

So poor countries are by and large low trust countries.

So if I understood the chemistry of trustworthiness,

I might help alleviate poverty.

貧困の緩和に貢献できるかもしれません

But I'm also a skeptic.

しかし私自身も疑い深いのですが

I don't want to just ask people, "Are you trustworthy?"

「あなたは信頼できますか？」 とは聞きません

So instead I use

the Jerry Maguire approach to research.

If you're so virtuous,

show me the money.

So what we do in my lab

is we tempt people with virtue and vice by using money.

Let me show you how we do that.

So we recruit some people for an experiment.

まずは被験者を決め

They all get $10 if they agree to show up.

実験に参加したら10ドルを与えることにします

We give them lots of instruction, and we never ever deceive them.

Then we match them in pairs by computer.

それからコンピューターでペアを作ります

And in that pair, one person gets a message saying,

"Do you want to give up some of your $10

and ship it to someone else in the lab?"

The trick is you can't see them,

you can't talk to them.

You only do it one time.

Now whatever you give up

gets tripled in the other person's account.

You're going to make them a lot wealthier.

And they get a message by computer saying

person one sent you this amount of money.

Do you want to keep it all,

or do you want to send some amount back?

So think about this experiment for minute.

You're going to sit on these hard chairs for an hour and a half.

Some mad scientist is going to jab your arm with a needle

and take four tubes of blood.

And now you want me to give up this money and ship it to a stranger?

So this was the birth of vampire economics.

Make a decision and give me some blood.

So in fact, experimental economists

実験主義をとる経済学者は

had run this test around the world,

and for much higher stakes,

and the consensus view

was that the measure from the first person to the second was a measure of trust,

and the transfer from the second person back to the first

measured trustworthiness.

But in fact, economists were flummoxed

on why the second person would ever return any money.

They assumed money is good,

why not keep it all?

That's not what we found.

We found 90 percent of the first decision-makers sent money,

and of those who received money,

受け取った人の95％が

95 percent returned some of it.

But why?

Well by measuring oxytocin

オキシトシンの量を測定すると

we found that the more money the second person received,

the more their brain produced oxytocin,

and the more oxytocin on board,

the more money they returned.

So we have a biology of trustworthiness.

But wait. What's wrong with this experiment?

Two things.

２つあります

One is that nothing in the body happens in isolation.

まず体内では何も独立しては 起こらないということです

So we measured nine other molecules that interact with oxytocin,

but they didn't have any effect.

But the second is

that I still only had this indirect relationship

between oxytocin and trustworthiness.

I didn't know for sure

oxytocin caused trustworthiness.

So to make the experiment,

I knew I'd have to go into the brain

and manipulate oxytocin directly.

I used everything short of a drill

to get oxytocin into my own brain.

And I found I could do it

with a nasal inhaler.

So along with colleagues in Zurich,

we put 200 men on oxytocin or placebo,

had that same trust test with money,

and we found that those on oxytocin not only showed more trust,

all without altering mood or cognition.

So oxytocin is the trust molecule,

but is it the moral molecule?

Using the oxytocin inhaler,

we ran more studies.

We showed that oxytocin infusion

increases generosity

この一方的にお金を

in unilateral monetary transfers

贈与する金額は

by 80 percent.

80％増大しました

We showed it increases donations to charity

慈善への寄付は

by 50 percent.

50％増大しました

We've also investigated

また薬物投与以外の方法で

non-pharmacologic ways to raise oxytocin.

These include massage,

dancing and praying.

Yes, my mom was happy about that last one.

And whenever we raise oxytocin,

people willingly open up their wallets

and share money with strangers.

知らない人にも気前が良くなります

But why do they do this?

ですが なぜでしょう

What does it feel like

脳内でオキシトシン濃度が上がると

when your brain is flooded with oxytocin?

どんな気持ちになるのでしょう

To investigate this question, we ran an experiment

この問いを明らかにするために

where we had people watch a video

父と 末期脳腫瘍の４歳の息子の

of a father and his four year-old son,

ビデオを被験者に見せるという

and his son has terminal brain cancer.

実験を行いました

After they watched the video, we had them rate their feelings

and took blood before and after to measure oxytocin.

The change in oxytocin

オキシトシン量の変化から

predicted their feelings of empathy.

共感の程度を推測できました

So it's empathy

共感こそが人を他者と

that makes us connect to other people.

結びつけるものです

It's empathy that makes us help other people.

共感こそが 私たちを人助けへと駆り立てるのです

It's empathy that makes us moral.

また共感があって 私たちは道徳的でありうるのです

Now this idea is not new.

この考えは新しいものではありません

A then unknown philosopher named Adam Smith

その当時無名の心理学者だった アダム・スミスは

wrote a book in 1759

1759年に「道徳感情論」という

called "The Theory of Moral Sentiments."

書物を著しました

In this book, Smith argued

そこで　 －私たちが道徳的生物なのは

that we are moral creatures, not because of a top-down reason,

生まれついての性質ではなく

but for a bottom-up reason.

経験から学んだことだ と述べています

He said we're social creatures,

また 我々は社会的生物であるので

so we share the emotions of others.

感情を他者と共有する　 とも述べました

So if I do something that hurts you, I feel that pain.

ですからもし相手を傷つけると　 自分も苦しいので

So I tend to avoid that.

それを避ける傾向があります

If I do something that makes you happy, I get to share your joy.

もし相手を喜ばせたら　 それを自分も感じようとします

So I tend to do those things.

ヒトにはこういう傾向があります

Now this is the same Adam Smith who, 17 years later,

彼こそがその17年後に

would write a little book called "The Wealth of Nations" --

経済学の先駆的な著作 「国富論」を著した

the founding document of economics.

あのアダム・スミスです

But he was, in fact, a moral philosopher,

実は彼は道徳を研究する哲学者で　 私たちが―

and he was right on why we're moral.

道徳的である理由について 言い当てていました

I just found the molecule behind it.

私はそれに関わる分子を発見したのです

But knowing that molecule is valuable,

その分子について知ることは有用です

because it tells us how to turn up this behavior

and what turns it off.

In particular, it tells us

why we see immorality.

So to investigate immorality,

let me bring you back now to 1980.

I'm working at a gas station

on the outskirts of Santa Barbara, California.

You sit in a gas station all day,

you see lots of morality and immorality, let me tell you.

様々な道徳や不道徳を目にします

So one Sunday afternoon, a man walks into my cashier's booth

ある日曜の午後　 一人の男性がきれいな宝石箱を手に

with this beautiful jewelry box.

レジへ歩いてきました

Opens it up and there's a pearl necklace inside.

箱を開けると真珠のネックレス―

And he said, "Hey, I was in the men's room.

「おい 男性トイレで―

I just found this. What do you think we should do with it?"

これを見つけたんだが　 どうしたらいいと思う？」

"I don't know, put it in the lost and found."

「さあ？忘れ物入れに置いておきますか」

"Well this is very valuable.

「いや これは高価だから

We have to find the owner for this." I said, "Yea."

持ち主を探すべきだ」 「確かに」

So we're trying to decide what to do with this,

どうするか考えていると

and the phone rings.

電話が鳴りました

And a man says very excitedly,

電話の相手は興奮して言いました

"I was in your gas station a while ago,

「妻に買ったジュエリーが見つからないんだ

and I bought this jewelry for my wife, and I can't find it."

I said, "Pearl necklace?" "Yeah."

"Hey, a guy just found it."

"Oh, you're saving my life. Here's my phone number.

Tell that guy to wait half an hour.

30分待つように伝えてくれ

I'll be there and I'll give him a $200 reward."

すぐ行って200ドルのお礼を渡したい」

Great, so I tell the guy, "Look, relax.

それはいいと思い

Get yourself a fat reward. Life's good."

「すごいです　たっぷりお礼をしたいそうです」 と男に告げると

He said, "I can't do it.

彼は「まずいな

I have this job interview in Galena in 15 minutes,

15分後にガレナで採用面接の約束だ

and I need this job, I've got to go."

この仕事は大事だ 行かなければ」 と言いました

Again he asked me, "What do you think we should do?"

I'm in high school. I have no idea.

So I said, "I'll hold it for you."

He said, "You know, you've been so nice, let's split the reward."

I'll give you the jewelry, you give me a hundred dollars,

and when the guy comes ... "

その人がやってきたら―」

You see it. I was conned.

おわかりですね　 私は騙されました

So this is a classic con called the pigeon drop,

これは信用詐欺という 詐欺師の常套手段です

and I was the pigeon.

So the way many cons work

つまり詐欺というのは

is not that the conman gets the victim to trust him,

詐欺師が相手に 信じ込ませるのではなく

it's that he shows he trusts the victim.

相手のことを信じたように みせかけることでうまくいくのです

Now we know what happens.

おわかりですね

The victim's brain releases oxytocin,

騙される人の脳内でオキシトシンが分泌され

and you're opening up your wallet or purse, giving away the money.

つい財布を開け　 お金をあげてしまうのです

So who are these people

こうしてオキシトシンを

who manipulate our oxytocin systems?

巧みに操作する人とは誰なのでしょう？

We found, testing thousands of individuals,

何千人もの人を調べると　 人口の５％の人は

that five percent of the population

刺激があっても

don't release oxytocin on stimulus.

オキシトシンを分泌しません

So if you trust them, their brains don't release oxytocin.

そんな人は信頼されても　 オキシトシンを分泌しません

If there's money on the table, they keep it all.

そこにお金があれば　 全部それを取ってしまいます

So there's a technical word for these people in my lab.

私の研究室で彼らを指す専門用語があります

We call them bastards.

「クソ野郎」

These are not people you want to have a beer with.

こんな人たちとは一緒に飲みたくありません

They have many of the attributes of psychopaths.

Now there are other ways the system can be inhibited.

オキシトシンの分泌系は他の方法でも―

One is through improper nurturing.

抑制されます　 ひとつは不適当な養育です

So we've studied sexually abused women,

and about half those don't release oxytocin on stimulus.

約半数は刺激されても オキシトシンを分泌しません

You need enough nurturing

この分泌系をはぐくむには

for this system to develop properly.

Also, high stress inhibits oxytocin.

また高ストレスはオキシトシンを抑制します

So we all know this, when we're really stressed out,

we're not acting our best.

There's another way oxytocin is inhibited, which is interesting --

オキシトシンの抑制され方で 興味深いことが もう一つあります

through the action of testosterone.

それはテストステロンの働きによります

So we, in experiments, have administered testosterone to men.

実験で男性にテストステロンを投与すると

And instead of sharing money,

気前良くはならず

they become selfish.

自己中心的になります

But interestingly,

しかし面白いことに　 テストステロンが高値の男性は

high testosterone males are also more likely

自己中心的な人を懲らしめるのに

to use their own money to punish others for being selfish.

自分の大枚をはたく傾向があります

(Laughter)

Now think about this. It means, within our own biology,

we have the yin and yang of morality.

We have oxytocin that connects us to others,

体内には他者と繋ぐオキシトシンがあり

makes us feel what they feel.

共感を起こさせます

And we have testosterone.

一方でテストステロンもあります

And men have 10 times the testosterone as women,

男性には女性の10倍あります

so men do this more than women --

テストステロンの働きにより

we have testosterone that makes us want to punish

男性は女性よりも 不道徳な人を

people who behave immorally.

罰しやすい傾向があるのです

We don't need God or government telling us what to do.

神や政府に指図されなくてもよいのです

It's all inside of us.

体の働きがそうさせるのですから

So you may be wondering:

それでも　 こう思うかもしれません

these are beautiful laboratory experiments,

「 できすぎの 実験室での話で―

do they really apply to real life?

現実にはてはまるのか？」

Yeah, I've been worrying about that too.

私も気になっていました

So I've gone out of the lab

それで実験室外の日常生活で

to see if this really holds in our daily lives.

そう言えるかどうか確かめてみました

So last summer, I attended a wedding in Southern England.

去年の夏　 イギリス南部で結婚式に出席しました

200 people in this beautiful Victorian mansion.

ビクトリア朝風の大邸宅に200人が集まりましたが

I didn't know a single person.

知らない人ばかりでした

And I drove up in my rented Vauxhall.

借りたボクスホールで行きました

And I took out a centrifuge and dry ice

遠心分離機 ドライアイス

and needles and tubes.

And I took blood from the bride and the groom

宣誓の前とすぐ後の

and the wedding party and the family and the friends

before and immediately after the vows.

And guess what?

Weddings cause a release of oxytocin,

but they do so in a very particular way.

Who is the center of the wedding solar system?

The bride.

She had the biggest increase in oxytocin.

新婦が一番オキシトシンを分泌していました

Who loves the wedding almost as much as the bride?

新婦と同じぐらい 結婚を喜んでいるのは誰でしょう？

Her mother, that's right.

その通り 新婦の母です

Her mother was number two.

新婦の母のオキシトシン量が二番目です

Then the groom's father, then the groom,

そして新郎の父 新郎

then the family, then the friends --

家族 友人と続きます

arrayed around the bride

太陽の周りの惑星のように

like planets around the Sun.

新婦の周りに配置されています

So I think it tells us that we've designed this ritual

つまり参列者と新婚夫婦― 私たち皆を感情的に

to connect us to this new couple,

connect us emotionally.

Why? Because we need them to be successful at reproducing

to perpetuate the species.

I also worried that my trust experiments with small amounts of money

また少額のお金を使って信用を調べる実験が

didn't really capture how often we actually trust our lives to strangers.

どれほど実生活で知らない人を 信じるかを言い当てられるか―

So even though I have a fear of heights,

不安でもありました

I recently strapped myself to another human being

最近 高度約3600メートルで

and stepped out of an airplane at 12,000 ft.

命綱をある人に預けて外へダイブし

I took my blood before and after,

その前後で採血しました

and I had a huge spike of oxytocin.

オキシトシン濃度の急上昇が見られたのです

And there are so many ways we can connect to people.

自分を他者と繋げる方法はいろいろあります

For example, through social media.

例えばソーシャルメディアを使って

Many people are Tweeting right now.

今多くの人がツイートしています

So we investigated the role of social media

ソーシャルメディアの役割を調べてみると

and found the using social media

その利用がオキシトシンの分泌量を

produced a solid double-digit increase in oxytocin.

何十パーセントも引き上げることが わかったのです

So I ran this experiment recently for the Korean Broadcasting System.

先日 この実験を 韓国の放送局のために行いました

And they had the reporters and their producers participate.

参加者はレポーターと プロデューサーたちでした

And one of these guys, he must have been 22,

そのうちの一人の男性 ―確か22歳でしたが

he had 150 percent spike in oxytocin.

150％オキシトシンが増量しました

I mean, astounding; no one has this.

驚きです　他の人では起こりませんから

So he was using social media in private.

そのとき彼は個人的に ソーシャルメディアを使用していました

When I wrote my report to the Koreans,

Two weeks ago,

I just got back from Papua New Guinea

帰国しました

where I went up to the highlands --

ある高地を訪れていたのです

very isolated tribes of subsistence farmers

そこには農業で生計を立てる孤立した部族がいて

living as they have lived for millenia.

千年もの間 変わることなく暮らしています

There are 800 different languages in the highlands.

高地には800もの言語が存在し

These are the most primitive people in the world.

世界でも最も原始的な生活をする人々です

And they indeed also release oxytocin.

この人たちもオキシトシンを分泌します

So oxytocin connects us to other people.

オキシトシンは私たちを他者とつなげます

Oxytocin makes us feel what other people feel.

オキシトシンは共感を高めます

And it's so easy to cause people's brains

また人の脳内でオキシトシンを放出させるのは

to release oxytocin.

I know how to do it,
