منذ عدة اسابيع

A few weeks ago, I had a chance to go to Saudi Arabia.

حظيت بفرصة الذهاب الى المملكة العربية السعودية

And the first thing I wanted to do as a Muslim

وكان اول شيء قمت به كمسلم

was to go to Mecca and visit the Kaaba,

هو الذهاب الى مكة .. وزيارة الكعبة

the holiest shrine of Islam.

المكان الاكثر قدسية في الاسلام

And I did that; I put on my ritualistic dress,

وقد قمت بذلك .. وارتديت رداء الاحرام

وزرت المسجد الحرام

I went to the holy mosque,

I did my prayers,

وصليت فيه

I observed all the rituals.

وقمت بأداء كل الشعائر

واثناء ذلك

And meanwhile, besides all the spirituality,

واثناء ذلك الجو الايماني المميز

there was one mundane detail in the Kaaba

كان هناك تفصيل صغير في الكعبة

that was pretty interesting for me:

اثار اهتمامي

there was no separation of sexes.

وهو انه لم يكن هناك فصلٌ بين الجنسين

In other words, men and women were worshiping all together.

بصورة آخرى .. كان الرجال والنساء

يؤدون الشعائر سوية

كانوا يدورون حول الكعبة بما يدعى ب" الطواف " معاً

They were together while doing tawāf, the circular walk around the Kaaba.

انه السير بصورة دائرية حول الكعبة

They were together while praying.

وكانوا يصلون سوية

And if you wonder why this is interesting at all,

وان كنتم لا تظنون ان هذا امراً مثيراً للاهتمام

فعليكم ان تروا باقي المملكة العربية السعودية

you have to see the rest of Saudi Arabia,

because this a country which is strictly divided between the sexes.

لأنها دولة

تفصل فصلاً تاماً بين الجنسين

In other words:

بصورة اخرى ..

as men, you are simply not supposed to be in the same physical space

فان الرجال لا يمكن ان يكونوا في نفس " المساحة الفيزيائية "

مع النساء

with women.

And I noticed this in a very funny way.

وقد تنبهت الى هذا ..

I left the Kaaba to eat something in downtown Mecca.

عندما غادرت الكعبة

الى وسط مكة من اجل ان أأكل شيئاً ..

I headed to the nearest Burger King restaurant.

فانطلقت الى مطعم " برجر كنغ "

وما ان وصلت هناك ..

And I went there -- I noticed that there was a male section,

حتى تنبهت الى وجود قسمين .. قسم

which is carefully separated from the female section.

للذكور .. ومفصول بعناية عن القسم الآخر وهو للنساء

I had to pay, order and eat in the male section.

اي عليك ان تطلب .. تدفع .. وتأكل في قسم الذكور

"It's funny," I said to myself,

قلت في نفسي " هذا مضحك "

"You can mingle with the opposite sex at the holy Kaaba,

يمكنك ان تؤدي تعاليم الاسلام دون فصل بين الجنسين في الكعبة

but not at the Burger King?"

ولا يمكنك ذلك في برجر كنغ

(Laughter)

يبدو الامر مضحكاً ..

Quite, quite ironic.

بالاضافة الى انه مضحك .. الا انه يشير الى شيء ما ..

Ironic, and it's also, I think, quite telling,

because the Kaaba and the rituals around it

وهو ان الكعبة و كل الشعائر المتعلقة بها

are relics from the earliest phase of Islam,

تعود الى بداية الاسلام ومراحله الاولى

that of prophet Muhammad.

التي كان فيها الرسول محمد (صلعم)

And if there was a big emphasis at the time to separate men from women,

وان كان في ذلك الزمن " دليل قطعي "

على وجود الفصل بين الذكور الاناث

the rituals around the Kaaba could have been designed accordingly.

لكنا رأينا ذلك في الكعبة .. و لصُممت لكي يؤدي الرجال والنساء التعاليم بصورة منفصلة

But apparently, that was not an issue at the time.

ولكن يبدو انه في ذلك العصر لم يكن ذلك موجوداً

وان الشعائر قد تواترت هكذا

So the rituals came that way.

This is also, I think, confirmed by the fact

وهذا ايضاً .. وهو امرٌ مؤكد

اقصد التحدث عن فصل النساء

that the seclusion of women in creating a divided society

والذي ينتج مجتمعاً منفصلاً

is something that you also do not find in the Koran --

هو شيء ليس مذكور في القرآن

والذي هو نواة الاسلام

the very core of Islam, the divine core of Islam --

المرجع الاساسي للاسلام وجوهره

that all Muslims, equally myself, believe.

والذي يرجع اليه كل المسلمين بما فيهم انا ..

وهذا ليس امرٌ عرضي ..

And I think it's not an accident

that you don't find this idea in the very origin of Islam,

فانت لا ترى هذا الامر

في أصل الدين الإسلامي

because many scholars who study the history of Islamic thought --

لأن العديد من العلماء

الذين درسوا تاريخ العصر الاسلامي

Muslim scholars or Westerners --

سواء كانوا مسلمين او غربيين

think that, actually, the practice of dividing men and women physically

رأوا ان بداية فصل

الناس بصورة كما التي تجري اليوم

came as a later development in Islam,

قد ظهرت في القسم الاخير من الحضارة الاسلامية

as Muslims adopted some preexisting cultures

فقد نقل المسلمون هذه العادة

من حضارات كانت متواجدة في الشرق الاوسط

and traditions of the Middle East.

Seclusion of women was actually a Byzantine and Persian practice,

والتي كانت تعزل النسوة

مثل السلوكيات البيزنطية والفارسية

وقد تبنى المسلمون هذه السلوكيات

and Muslims adopted it and made it a part of their religion.

وجعلوها جزءاً من دينهم

Actually, this is just one example of a much larger phenomenon.

وهذا مجرد مثال واحد ..

ولكنه جزء من ظاهرة كبيرة

What we call today Islamic law, and especially Islamic culture --

مما ندعوه اليوم القانون الاسلامي .. او ما يمكن وصفه بالثقافة الاسلامية

وهناك الكثير من الثقافات الاسلامية

and there are many Islamic cultures, actually;

وتلك الموجودة في المملكة العربية السعودية .. مختلفة جداً

the one in Saudi Arabia is much different

عن تلك الموجودة في اسطنبول تركيا .. موطني

from where I come from in Istanbul or Turkey.

But still, if you're going to speak about a Muslim culture,

وعلى هذا

ان أردت الحديث عن الثقافة الاسلامية

this has a core: the divine message which began the religion.

فان لها جوهر ، او رسالة اساسية

سوف تجد انه بدأ كديانة ..

But then many traditions, perceptions, practices were added on top of it.

ولكن العديد من تلك التقاليد والمفاهيم

والممارسات قد تم تبنيها لاحقاً

And these were traditions of the Middle East medieval traditions.

والتي هي تقاليد الشرق الأوسط التي تعود الى العصور الوسطى

There are two important messages, or two lessons,

وهناك رسالتين .. او درسين يمكننا ..

ان نستنبطتهما من هذا الامر

to take from that reality.

First of all, Muslims --

الاول .. ان المسلمين

pious, conservative, believing Muslims who want to be loyal to their religion --

التقاة .. المحافظين .. الذين يريدون ان يكونوا ملتزمين بدينهم ..

لايجب ان يأخذوا كل شيء من ثقافتهم ..

should not cling onto everything in their culture,

thinking that that's divinely mandated.

على انه تعليم من تعاليم الاسلام

فهناك عادات ثقافية سيئة

Maybe some things are bad traditions and they need to be changed.

يتوجب علينا تغييرها

On the other hand, the Westerners who look at Islamic culture

وعلى الجانب الآخر لا يجب على الغربيين

الذين ينظروا الى الثقافة الاسلامية

and see some troubling aspects

ويجدون فيها العديد من المفاهيم الإشكالية

should not readily conclude that this is what Islam ordains.

ان يعتبروا ذلك جزءاً من الدين الاسلامي

Maybe it's a Middle Eastern culture that became confused with Islam.

ربما هي ثقافة الشرق الاوسط

اختلطت مع الدين الاسلامي

فممارسة ختان الاناث

There is a practice called female circumcision.

انه امرٌ شنيع .. و سيء جداً ..

It's something terrible, horrible.

It is basically an operation to deprive women of sexual pleasure.

انه عبارة عن عملية جراحية ..

تقوض شهوة المرأة الجنسية ..

And Westerners --

والغربيين .. الاوروبين .. او الامريكيين

Europeans or Americans -- who didn't know about this before,

لا يعلمون اي شيء عن الختان

[saw] this practice

وعمليته

within some of the Muslim communities who migrated from North Africa.

سوى انها قادمة من المجتمعات الاسلامية ..

وقد تعرفوا عليه عندما هاجر البعض من شمال افريقيا ..

And they've thought,

وقالوا عن الاسلام .. " ما هذا الدين الشنيع ...

"Oh, what a horrible religion that is, which ordains something like that."

الذي يأمر أتباعه بهكذا أمر "

ولكن عندما تنظر جيداً الى ختان المرأة

But when you look at female circumcision,

تجد انه لا يتعلق على الاطلاق بالديانة الاسلامية

you see that it has nothing to do with Islam;

فهو يحدث فحسب في شمال افريقيا

it's just a North African practice which predates Islam.

وصدف ان تلك المنطقة اعتنقت الاسلام

It was there for thousands of years.

ان هذا التصرف موجود منذ آلاف السنين

And, quite tellingly, some Muslims do practice it --

وبعض المسلمين يمارسون هذا التصرف اليوم

وليس فحسب المسلمين في شمال افريقيا يقومون بهذا ..

the Muslims in North Africa, not in other places.

But also the non-Muslim communities of North Africa --

ولكن ايضاً غير المسلمين في شمال افريقيا أيضاً

سواء الوثنيون .. او بعض المسيحين ..

the animists, some Christians and even a Jewish tribe in North Africa --

وحتى بعض القبائل اليهودية في شمال افريقيا ..

يمارسون ختان المرأة

are known to practice female circumcision.

So what might look like a problem within Islamic faith

اذا . .ما يبدو مشكلة فيما يتعلق

بالديانة الاسلامية

might turn out to be a tradition that Muslims have subscribed to.

ليست اكثر من تقليد قديم ..

بدء المسلمون اعتماده

The same thing can be said for honor killings,

والامر ذاته فيما يخص جرائم الشرف

which is a recurrent theme in the Western media --

والتي هي جزء دائم من الاعلام الغربي الذي يهاجم الثقافة الاسلامية

and which is, of course, a horrible tradition.

وهو تقليد شنيع جداً

And we see, truly, in some Muslim communities, that tradition.

ونحن نراه في بعض المجتمعات المسلمة

وغير المسلمة في منطقة الشرق الاوسط

But in the non-Muslim communities of the Middle East,

كمجتمعات المسيحين .. والمجتمعات الشرقية

such as some Christian communities, Eastern communities,

فانت ترى نفس التقليد لديهم

you see the same practice.

We had a tragic case of an honor killing

فلقد حدثت جريمة شرف شنيعة

في المجتمع الارميني في تركيا

within Turkey's Armenian community just a few months ago.

منذ عدة شهور

Now, these are things about general culture,

انه امرٌ مرتبط بالثقافة العامة للمنطقة

but I'm also very much interested in political culture

كما اني اظن ان هذا متعلق بالثقافة السياسية

and whether liberty and democracy is appreciated,

ومفهوم الحرية و الديموقراطية و تقديرهما

or whether there's an authoritarian political culture

و متعلق ايضاً بالسلطات الحاكمة المستبدة في تلك الثقافات

in which the state is supposed to impose things on the citizens.

ومدى تعاملها مع هذه التصرفات للحد منها و ردع المواطنين عنها

ولا يخفى على احد ..

And it is no secret

that many Islamic movements in the Middle East

ان العديد من الحركات الاسلامية في الشرق الاوسط

تميل للإستبداد

tend to be authoritarian,

and some of the so-called "Islamic regimes,"

وبعض ما يسمى ب "الإنظمة الإسلامية "

such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and the worst case, the Taliban in Afghanistan,

كما ذلك الموجود في المملكة العربية السعودية .. و الجمهورية الاسلامية الايرانية

وطبعاً الاسوء على الاطلاق .. طالبان في افغانستان

they are pretty authoritarian -- no doubt about that.

انها انظمة استبدادية .. لامحالة ..

فعلى سبيل المثال في المملكة العربية السعودية ..

For example, in Saudi Arabia,

there is a phenomenon called the religious police.

يوجد ظاهرة تدعى " الشرطة الدينية "

And the religious police imposes the supposed Islamic way of life

وهذه الشرطة الدينية .. تفرض

ما تراه الطريقة الاسلامية للحياة

on every citizen, by force --

لذا يجبر كل مواطن بالقوة على القيام بوجهة نظرهم

like, women are forced to cover their heads --

لذا تجبر النساء على تغطية الوجه

بما يدعى النقاب، لتغطية الرأس

wear the hijab, the Islamic head cover.

وهذا استبدادي ..

Now that is pretty authoritarian,

وهو موضع نقد شديد من قبلي

and that's something I'm very much critical of.

ولكن عندما ادرك

But when I realized that the non-Muslim,

ان المجتمعات الغير مسلمة

or the non-Islamic-minded actors in the same geography

او الاشخاص الغير مسلمين في نفس المنطقة الجغرافية

يتصرفون بنفس العقلية

sometimes behaved similarly,

I realized that the problem maybe lies

اعتقد ان هذه المشكلة ربما

in the political culture of the whole region, not just Islam.

تندرج في الثقافة العامة للمنطقة وليست في الدين الاسلامي

Let me give you an example: in Turkey, where I come from,

دعوني اعطيكم مثالاً عن تركيا .. موطني ..

which is a very hyper-secular republic,

وهي جمهورية علمانية جداً

until very recently, we used to have what I call "secularism police,"

وكنا حتى فترة قريبة من هذا الزمان

لدينا شرطة علمانية

والتي كانت تحرس الجامعات

which would guard the universities against veiled students.

من الطالبات المحجبات

In other words, they would force students to uncover their heads.

اي بمعنى آخر .. كانت تجبر الطالبات

على نزع الحجاب

And I think forcing people to uncover their head

وانا اعتقد ان اجبار الناس على نزع حجابهم

is as tyrannical as forcing them to cover it.

هو سيء بنفس السوية كما اجبار الناس على وضع حجابهم

لأنه ينبغي أن يكون قرار المواطن

It should be the citizen's decision.

But when I saw that, I said,

ولكن قلت في نفسي لاحقاً ..

"Maybe the problem is just an authoritarian culture in the region,

ربما هذه المشكلة .. متجذرة

في المنطقة و سياسة الاستبداد تلك .. جزء من ثقافة المنطقة

and some Muslims have been influenced by that.

وقد تأثر المسلمون بهذه الثقافة

كما يمكن للعلمانيين ان يتأثروا بها ايضاً ..

But the secular-minded people can be influenced by that.

Maybe it's a problem of the political culture,

فهي مشكلة سياسية ..

وعلينا ان نفكر ..

and we have to think about how to change that political culture."

بكيفية تغير تلك الثقافة السياسية

Now, these are some of the questions I had in mind a few years ago

لقد كانت هذه الاسئلة

التي تدور في عقلي منذ عدة سنوات

when I sat down to write a book.

عندما قررت ان اجلس و اكتب كتاباً ..

I said, "Well, I will do research

وقلت " حسناً .. سوف اقوم ببحث

عن كيفية تطور الاسلام لما هو عليه اليوم

about how Islam actually came to be what it is today,

وما هي طرق تطوره التي سلكها ..

and what roads were taken and what roads could have been taken."

وما هي تلك التي كان يمكن أن يسلكها

واصدرت كتاباً بعنوان " اسلام بدون متطرفين : قضية مسلم نحو الحرية "

The name of the book is "Islam Without Extremes: A Muslim Case for Liberty."

And as the subtitle suggests,

وكما يمكن أن يفهم من العنوان

I looked at Islamic tradition and the history of Islamic thought

لقد بحثت في التاريخ الاسلامي

from the perspective of individual liberty,

من منظور الحرية الشخصية

and I tried to find what are the strengths with regard to individual liberty.

وحاولت ان ابحث عن نقاط القوة

والتي تندرج ضمن الحرية الشخصية

And there are strengths in Islamic tradition.

وكان هناك الكثير منها

اذ ان الاسلام في الحقيقة دين " فردي "

Islam, actually, as a monotheistic religion,

which defined man as a responsible agent by itself,

يحدد مسؤولية الفرد بنفسه

created the idea of the individual in the Middle East,

وهو الذي صنع فكرة " الفردية " في الشرق الاوسط

وانقذه من " ركب الجمع "

and saved it from the communitarianism, the collectivism of the tribe.

الذي كان عنواناً لمفهوم القبيلة

You can derive many ideas from that.

وهناك الكثير من هذه الافكار

But besides that, I also saw problems within Islamic tradition.

ايضاً على نفس المنحى .. ولكن ستجد ايضاً بعض المشاكل

But one thing was curious:

ولكن ما يثير الفضول

most of those problems turn out to be problems that emerged later,

ان معظم تلك المشاكل قد ظهرت لاحقاً

not from the very divine core of Islam, the Koran,

وغير مستنبطة من نواة الاسلام " القرآن "

but from, again, traditions and mentalities,

ولكنها جاءت من الثقافات والعقليات

او من خلال تفاسير القرآن ..

or the interpretations of the Koran that Muslims made in the Middle Ages.

والتي بدأت تظهر في منتصف عهد الحضارة الاسلامية

فالقرآن على سبيل المثال

The Koran, for example, doesn't condone stoning.

لا يتغاضى عن الرجم

There is no punishment for apostasy.

ولا يوجد عقوبة للمرتد ..

There is no punishment for personal sins like drinking.

ولا يوجد عقوبة منصوصة لشارب الخمر

ان هذه القوانين الاسلامية

These things which make Islamic law,

the troubling aspects of Islamic law,

أو المفاهيم الخاطئة للإسلام

were developed into later interpretations of Islam.

التي تطورت تبعاً لتفاسير لاحقة للقرآن الكريم

Which means that Muslims can, today,

وهذا يعني .. ان المسلمين اليوم ..

look at those things and say,

الذين ينظرون الى هذه الامور ..

"Well, the core of our religion is here to stay with us.

ويقولون " حسناً.. ان نواة الاسلام ها هي ..

ان الله قد حفظه ..

It's our faith, and we will be loyal to it.

وهو محور إيماننا .. ويجب ان نكون مخلصين له "

But we can change how it was interpreted,

ولكن هذا لا يعني اننا لا نستطيع اعادة تفسيره

because it was interpreted according to the time

لانه قد تم تفسيره تبعاً للعقليات التي كانت موجودة في العهود الوسطى

and milieu in the Middle Ages.

والتي كانت تعيش في عالم مختلف

Now we're living in a different world,

وضمن أنظمة سياسات مختلفة.. و قيم اخرى

with different values and political systems."

واعادة التفسير يمكن ان تتم بصورة سلسلة

That interpretation is quite possible and feasible.

Now, if I were the only person thinking that way,

واذا كنت انا الوحيد الذي افكر بهذا ..

we would be in trouble.

فنحن حينها في ورطة ..

But that's not the case at all.

ولكن هذه ليست القضية اليوم ..

Actually, from the 19th century on,

في الحقيقة منذ القرن ال19

there's a whole revisionist, reformist -- whatever you call it -- tradition,

فان الاصلاحين او المجددين

او مهما اردت ان تصفهم

التقليديين ...

a trend in Islamic thinking.

بأصحاب منحى التفكير الاسلامي

These were intellectuals or statesmen

وهؤلاء كانوا من العلماء أو رجال الدولة والسلطة

منذ القرن التاسع عشر ولاحقاً في القرن العشرين

of the 19th century, and later, 20th century,

which looked at Europe, basically,

بدأوا ينظرون الى اوروبا ..

and saw that Europe has many things to admire,

بصورة ما يجعلهم يحترمون

like science and technology.

علومها وتكنولوجيتها

But not just that; also democracy, parliament,

وحتى ايضاً ديموقراطيتها و انظمتها البرلمانية

وفكرة التمثيل الشعبي

the idea of representation,

the idea of equal citizenship.

وفكرة المواطنة المتساوية

These Muslim thinkers, intellectuals and statesmen of the 19th century,

ان هؤلاء المفكرون الاسلاميون .. او رجال السلطة ..

الذين نظروا الى اوروبا ورأوا هذه الأشياء ..

looked at Europe, saw these things, and said,

قالوا لانفسهم " لماذا لا نملك نحن أيضاً هذه الانظمة ؟ "

"Why don't we have these things?"

وقد نظروا الى الثقافة الاسلامية

And they looked back at Islamic tradition,

ووجدوا فيها مفاهيم مستشكلة..

and saw that there are problematic aspects,

but they're not the core of the religion, so maybe they can be re-understood,

لا تنتمي الى نواة الاسلام .. ويمكن اعادة فهمها وتفسيرها

كما يمكن للقرآن ان يعاد تفسيره وقراءته

and the Koran can be reread in the modern world.

في هذا العصر الجديد

That trend is generally called Islamic modernism,

ان هذا المنحى ..

هو ما يسمى بالتحديث الاسلامي

and it was advanced by intellectuals and statesmen,

وهو يُدفع من قبل المثقفين و رجال السلطة

not just as an intellectual idea, though,

وهي ليست فكرة مثقفين فحسب

but also as a political program.

بل هي نظام سياسي متكامل

And that's why, actually, in the 19th century,

وهذا كان السبب الرئيسي في القرن التاسع عشر

the Ottoman Empire, which then covered the whole Middle East,

عندما كانت الامبرطورية العثمانية تغطي كل الشرق الاوسط

قد قامت باعادة تشكيل او إصلاح لبعض المفاهيم

made very important reforms --

reforms like giving Christians and Jews an equal citizenship status,

فقد اعطت المسيحين واليهود

مواطنة متساوية

وقد قبلت بالمفاهيم الدستورية

accepting a constitution,

accepting a representative parliament,

والتمثيل البرلماني

advancing the idea of freedom of religion.

ودفعت بفكرة الحرية الدينية

That's why the Ottoman Empire, in its last decades,

وهذا السبب الذي دفع الامبرطورية العثمانية في العقود الاخيرة

turned into a proto-democracy, a constitutional monarchy,

بان تنتقل الى مرحلة ما قبل -الديموقراطية

و سيادة الدستور

and freedom was a very important political value at the time.

كانت الحرية قيمة سياسية هامة في تلك الحقبة

Similarly, in the Arab world,

وكذلك الامر في العالم العربي

there was what the great Arab historian Albert Hourani defines

لقد رأى المؤرخ ألبرت هوراني

ان تلك الحقبة كانت حقبة التحرر

as the Liberal Age.

He has a book, "Arabic Thought in the Liberal Age,"

حيث ذكر ذلك في كتابه " الفكر العربي في عصر التحرر "

وقد وصف عصر التحرر

and the Liberal Age, he defines as 19th century and early 20th century.

بالقرن التاسع عشر وبداية القرن العشرين

وكان هذا منحى عام في كل المجتمع الاسلامي

Quite notably, this was the dominant trend in the early 20th century

حتى بداية القرن العشرين

among Islamic thinkers and statesmen and theologians.

مدفوعاً من المفكرين المسلمين ورجال السلطة و اللاهوتين

But there is a very curious pattern in the rest of the 20th century,

ولكن تغير هذا المنحى بصورة " تدفع للفضول "

في ما تبقى من القرن العشرين

because we see a sharp decline in this Islamic modernist line.

بسبب انخفاض حاد في

الفكر الاسلامي الحديث

And in place of that,

وفي هكذا حالات ..

what happens is that Islamism grows as an ideology which is authoritarian,

ما يحدث هو ان "الاسلاموية" تنمو

كأيديولوجيا استبدادية

which is quite strident,

وهي ايديلوجيا حادة ..

which is quite anti-Western,

وهي معادية للغرب

وهي تريد ان تعيد تشكيل المجتمع

and which wants to shape society based on a utopian vision.

بفكر " مثالي جداً "

So Islamism is the problematic idea

ان فكرة " أسلمة المجتمعات " هي فكرة تحمل اشكاليات

that really created a lot of problems in the 20th-century Islamic world.

عدة وصنعت الكثير من المشكلات

في القرن العشرين في العالم الاسلامي

And even the very extreme forms of Islamism

حتى أن الجانب المتطرف لذلك المنحى الاسلاموي

led to terrorism in the name of Islam --

قاد الى الارهاب بإسم الاسلام

والذي هو - الارهاب - في الاساس معارض للاسلام تماما

which is actually a practice that I think is against Islam,

but some, obviously, extremists, did not think that way.

ولكن يبدو ان المتطرفين لا يرون ذلك معارضاً له

But there is a curious question:

ولكن هناك سؤالٌ هام

If Islamic modernism was so popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries,

ان كان التجديد الإسلامي شائعاً جداً

في القرن التاسع عشر وبداية القرن العشرين

why did Islamism become so popular in the rest of the 20th century?

لماذا غدا بعد ذلك " المتشددون " هم الذين

لديهم الصوت الأعلى في القرن العشرين ؟

واعتقد ان الاجابة على هذا السؤال

And this is a question, I think, which needs to be discussed carefully.

يجب ان يتم نقاشه بصورة متأنية ..

In my book, I went into that question as well.

وفي كتابي .. سردت وجهة نظري حيال هذا السؤال بشكل مسهب

And actually, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to understand that.

ولا اعتقد انك يجب ان تكون عالم صواريخ لكي تستوعب ذلك

Just look at the political history of the 20th century,

يمكنك ان تنظر الى التاريخ السياسي في القرن العشرين

وسوف تلحظ تماما كيف ان هناك الكثير من التغيرات التي حدثت

and you see things have changed a lot.

لقد تغير المفهوم

The contexts have changed.

In the 19th century,

الذي كان سائداً في القرن التاسع عشر

when Muslims were looking at Europe as an example,

عندما كان المسلمون ينظرون الى اوروبا كمثال يمكن الاقتداء به

they were independent; they were more self-confident.

فيما يتعلق بالاستقلالية و الثقة بالنفس

In the early 20th century, with the fall of the Ottoman Empire,

ففي بداية القرن العشرين .. عندما انهارت الامبرطورية العثمانية

the whole Middle East was colonized.

تم إستعمار كل الشرق الاوسط

And when you have colonialization, what do you have?

وعندما يتم استعمار مكان ما .. ماذا يظهر ؟

You have anti-colonialization.

حركات مقاومة للاستعمار

So Europe is not just an example now to emulate;

لذا تحولت أوروبا من مثال يحتذى به

it's an enemy to fight and to resist.

الى عدو يجب محاربته و مقاومته

So there's a very sharp decline in liberal ideas in the Muslim world,

وهذا قد قوض بصورة كبيرة

الافكار الليبرالية في العالم الاسلامي

وما ترونه اليوم هو عبارة عن مفاهيم دفاعية

and what you see is more of a defensive, rigid, reactionary strain,

صلبة رجعية

which led to Arab socialism, Arab nationalism

قادت إلى الإشتراكية العربية .. والقومية العربية

and ultimately to the Islamist ideology.

وشكلت في نهاية المطاف الايديولوجية الاسلامية اليوم

And when the colonial period ended,

وعندما اندثر الاستعمار

what you had in place of that was generally secular dictators,

ما بقي في ذلك الفراغ

كان عبارة عن مستبدين علمانيون

حكموا البلاد

which say they're a country,

but did not bring democracy to the country,

دون ان ينشروا فيها الديموقراطية

and established their own dictatorship.

وأسسوا ديكتاتوريتهم الخاصة بهم

And I think the West, at least some powers in the West,

واعتقد ان الغرب ... او بعض القوى في الغرب ..

وخاصة الولايات المتحدة

particularly the United States,

made the mistake of supporting those secular dictators,

قد أخطأت كثيراً في دعم هؤلاء الدكتاتورين

thinking that they were more helpful for their interests.

ظناً منهم انهم سوف يكونون مفيدين لمصالحهم

But the fact that those dictators suppressed democracy in their country

ولكن في الحقيقة هؤلاء الدكتاتورين

الذين قوضوا الديموقراطية في بلادهم

and suppressed Islamic groups in their country

وقمعوا الجماعات الاسلامية في بلدانهم

actually made the Islamists much more strident.

هم ذاتهم الذين ساهموا في نمو الجماعات " المتشددة "

لذا في القرن العشرين

So in the 20th century,

you had this vicious cycle in the Arab world,

لدينا في العالم العربي هذه الحلقة المفرغة

where you have a dictatorship suppressing its own people,

حيث لدينا دكتاتور يقمع شعبه

including the Islamic pious,

حتى المسلمين المحافظين منهم

and they're reacting in reactionary ways.

ولدينا تيار معاكس رجعي يرد عليه

There was one country, though,

ولكن هناك بلد واحد

which was able to escape or stay away from that vicious cycle.

استطاع ان يخرج من هذه الدائرة

التي تسيطر على المنطقة

And that's the country where I come from, Turkey.

وهي الدولة التي قدمت منها .. انها تركيا

Turkey has never been colonized,

لان تركيا لم تُستعمر

لذا بقيت دولة مستقلة بعد اندثار الامبرطورية العثمانية

so it remained as an independent nation after the fall of the Ottoman Empire.

ولهذا

That's one thing to remember;

فلم يكن لديهم تيارات معادية للاستعمار

it did not share the same anti-colonial hype

التي تراها في الدول المحيطة

that you can find in some other countries in the region.

Secondly, and most importantly,

ويضاف الى ذلك .. امرٌ اكثر اهمية

Turkey became a democracy

ان تركيا تحولت الى دولة ديموقراطية

earlier than any of the countries we are talking about.

قبل العديد من الدول التي نتحدث عنها

In 1950, Turkey had the first free and fair elections,

ففي 1950 جرت اول انتخابات حرة في تركيا

والتي انهت عصر الاستبداد العلماني

which ended the more autocratic secular regime,

which was in the beginning of Turkey.

وكانت تلك الانتخابات بداية انطلاقة تركيا

And the pious Muslims in Turkey

ووجد المحافظون الاسلاميون في تركيا

saw that they could change the political system by voting.

ان التصويت هو الوسيلة الوحيدة للتغيير في تركيا

And they realized that democracy is something compatible with Islam,

وادركوا ان الديموقراطية هي امرٌ متوافق مع الاسلام

ومتوافق مع قيمهم

compatible with their values,

and they've been supportive of democracy.

لذا قاموا بدعم الديموقراطية

That's an experience

وهذه التجربة ..

that not every other Muslim nation in the Middle East had,

لم تعيها الكثير من المجتمعات الاسلامية في الشرق الاوسط

حتى قريبا جدا

until very recently.

Secondly, in the past two decades,

كما انه في العقدين الأخيرين ..

thanks to globalization, thanks to the market economy,

وبفضل العولمة واقتصاد السوق

thanks to the rise of a middle class,

وبفضل نمو الطبقة الوسطى

we in Turkey see what I define as a rebirth of Islamic modernism.

رأينا في تركيا

ما اسميه انا اعادة ولادة الحداثة الاسلامية

Now, there's the more urban middle-class pious Muslims

فهناك اليوم الكثير من المحافظين الاسلاميين من الطبقة المتوسطة المتمدنة

والذين اعادوا النظر في تقاليدهم

who, again, look at their tradition

حينما وجدوا بعض المشاكل فيها

and see that there are some problems in the tradition,

وقد استوعبوا ان تلك التقاليد يجب ان يعاد تشكيلها

and understand that they need to be changed and questioned and reformed.

ومن ثم نظروا الى اوروبا

And they look at Europe, and see an example, again, to follow.

ووجدوا مثالاً يقتدى به

They see an example, at least, to take some inspiration from.

ووجدوا ملهماً يمكن الاستعانة به

ولهذا يقدر الاتحاد الاوروبي

That's why the EU process, Turkey's effort to join the EU,

جهود تركيا للانضمام اليه

وخاصة ان ذلك المنحى مدعوم من داخل تركيا

has been supported inside Turkey by the Islamic pious,

من قبل المحافظين المسلمين

while some secular nationalists were against it.

ويذكر ان بعض الانظمة العلمانية تقف ضده

Well, that process has been a little bit blurred

صحيح ان هذا المفهوم يمكن ان " يبهم "

بسبب ان ليس كل الاوروبين مستعدين للترحيب بتركيا

by the fact that not all Europeans are that welcoming,

ولكن هذا نقاش آخر

but that's another discussion.

But the pro-EU sentiment in Turkey in the past decade

ان الدفع لانضمام تركيا للاتحاد الاوربي في العقد الاخير

has become almost an Islamic cause and supported by the Islamic liberals

قد غدا قضية اسلامية

ويتم دعمه من قبل الليبرالين المسلمين

and the secular liberals as well, of course.

والليبرالين العلمانين ايضاً

And thanks to that,

وبفضل هذا

Turkey has been able to reasonably create a success story

استطاعت تركيا ان تخرج بقصة نجاح

in which Islam and the most pious understandings of Islam

أصبح فيها فهم الاسلام من قبل المحافظين و المتحررين

have become part of the democratic game,

جزءاً من اللعبة الديموقراطية

and even contributes to the democratic and economic advance of the country.

و حتى أنه يساهم سياسياً واقتصادياً

من اجل مصلحة وتقدم الدولة

And this has been an inspiring example right now

وهذا النجاح قد بات اليوم مثالٌ يحتذى به

لبعض الحركات الاسلامية

for some of the Islamic movements

في البعض الدول العربية

or some of the countries in the Arab world.

You must have all seen the Arab Spring,

وكما نرى جميعاً في ربيع الدول العربية

which began in Tunis and in Egypt.

كيف انه بدأ في تونس ومصر

Arab masses just revolted against their dictators.

فالجموع العربية

بدأت تثور ضد ديكتاتوريها

They were asking for democracy; they were asking for freedom.

واخذوا يطالبون بالديموقراطية والحرية

وكما نرى لم تمثل - مصر ولا تونس - تطرفاً اسلامياً بعد الثورة

And they did not turn out to be the Islamist boogeyman

that the dictators were always using to justify their regime.

كما كان يحاول الديكتاتوريون ايهامنا بذلك

من اجل اعطاء شرعية لانظمتهم

فكل ما قالته هذه الجموع .. انها تريد الحرية و الديموقراطية

They said, "We want freedom; we want democracy.

We are Muslim believers,

" نحن جميعا مسلمون ..

but we want to be living as free people in free societies."

ولكننا نريد ان نعيش كأحرار .. في مجتمعات حرة "

ان هذه مسيرة طويلة

Of course, this is a long road.

لان الديموقراطية لا تنتشر بين عشية وضحاها

Democracy is not an overnight achievement; it's a process.

انها عملية متكاملة

ولكن هذه الحقبة .. حقبة واعدة

But this is a promising era in the Muslim world.

في العالم الاسلامي

وانا اظن ان حركات التجديد الاسلامي

And I believe that the Islamic modernism which began in the 19th century,

التي بدأت في القرن 19

but which had a setback in the 20th century

والتي تم تقويضها في القرن ال20

بسبب المشاكل السياسية للعالم الإسلامي حينها

because of the political troubles of the Muslim world,

قد ولدت من جديد

is having a rebirth.

وانا اعتقد ان الرسالة من كل هذا

And I think the takeaway message from that would be that Islam,

ان الاسلام

despite some of the skeptics in the West,

وبرغم كل المشككين في الغرب

has the potential in itself

يحمل في طياته املاً مشرقاً

to create its own way to democracy, create its own way to liberalism,

لكي يصنع ديموقراطيته الخاصة .. وليبراليته الخاصة

create its own way to freedom.

وحريته الخاصة

They just should be allowed to work for that.

وعلى الجميع ان يسمح لهم بذلك
