Two weeks ago I was in my studio in Paris,

and the phone rang and I heard,

I was lost.

I mean, I can't save the world. Nobody can.

أنا لا أستطيع انقاذ العالم, لا احد يستطيع

The world is fucked up.

العالم في وضع مزري.

Come on, you have dictators ruling the world,

لنكن واقعيين ، لديك طغاة يحكمون العالم،

population is growing by millions,

عدد السكان ينمو بالملايين،

there's no more fish in the sea,

لا يوجد المزيد من الاسماك في البحر,

the North Pole is melting

القطب الشمالي يذوب

and as the last TED Prize winner said,

وكما قال اخر فائز بجائزة تيد,

we're all becoming fat.

جميعنا نزداد سمنة.

Except maybe French people.

ماعادا ربما الفرنسيون.

Whatever.

So I called back

and I told her,

"Look, Amy,

" حسنا ايمي,

tell the TED guys I just won't show up.

I can't do anything to save the world."

She said, "Hey, JR,

your wish is not to save the world, but to change the world."

I mean, technology, politics, business

اقصد . التقنية, السياسة, الاقتصاد

do change the world --

بالفعل غيرت العالم--

not always in a good way, but they do.

ليس بالضرور بصورة جيدة, لكنها قامت بالتغيير.

What about art?

ماذا عن الفن؟

Could art change the world?

هل بامكان الفن ان يغير العالم؟

I started when I was 15 years old.

بدات عندما كان عمري 15 سنة.

And at that time, I was not thinking about changing the world.

وفي ذلك الوقت, لم اكن افكر في تغيير العالم,

I was doing graffiti --

كنت امارس الرسم على الجدران--

writing my name everywhere,

اكتب اسمي في كل مكان,

using the city as a canvas.

استخدم المدينة كانها لوحة قماشية.

I was going in the tunnels of Paris,

فعلت ذلك في انفاق مدينة باريس,

on the rooftops with my friends.

وعلى اسطح المنازل مع اصدقائي.

Each trip was an excursion,

كل رحلة كانت مختلفة

was an adventure.

كانت مغامرة.

It was like leaving our mark on society,

كان ذلك كانه ترك اثارنا في المجتمع.

to say, "I was here," on the top of a building.

ان نقول, "لقد كنت هنا," في اعلى البناية.

So when I found a cheap camera on the subway,

عندم وجدت كامير رخيصة في محطة المترو,

I started documenting those adventures with my friends

بدات في توثيق تلك المغامرات مع اصدقائي

and gave them back as photocopies --

وتوزيعها عليهم في شكل صور مطبوعة --

really small photos just that size.

صور صغيرة في هذا الحجم.

That's how, at 17 years old,

كان الامر على ذلك النحو , عندما اصبحت في سن السابعة عشر,

I started pasting them.

بدأت ألصق تلك الصور.

And I did my first "expo de rue,"

وعملت اول ايكسبو دي رو خاص بي

which means sidewalk gallery.

وهو يعني معرض الرصيف

And I framed it with color

وجعلت لها اطارات

so you would not confuse it with advertising.

بحيث يمكن تمييزها من بين الاعلانات.

I mean, the city's the best gallery I could imagine.

اعني, كان ذلك افضل معرض صور يمكنني تخيله للمدينة.

I would never have to make a book and then present it to a gallery

لم يتوجب علي ابدا عمل كتاب ومن ثم اهداءه لاحد المعارض

and let them decide

واجعلهم يقررون

if my work was nice enough to show it to people.

ما اذا كان عملي جيدا بما فيه الكفاية لكي يعرض على الجمهور

I would control it directly with the public

لقد تحكمت بالموضوع مباشرة مع الجمهور

in the streets.

في الشوارع.

So that's Paris.

تلك هي باريس.

I would change --

سوف اغير--

depending on the places I would go --

اعتمادا على المكان الذي سوف اذهب اليه--

the title of the exhibition.

عنوان المعرض.

That's on the Champs-Elysees.

مثلا في شامبس-ايليزيه.

I was quite proud of that one.

كنت فخورا بذلك المعرض؟

Because I was just 18

لانني كنت في الثامنة عشر

and I was just up there on the top of the Champs-Elysees.

وقد كنت هناك في قمة ال شامبس-ايليزيه.

Then when the photo left,

وحتى عندما نزعت الصور,

the frame was still there.

November 2005:

نوفمبر 2005:

the streets are burning.

الشوارع كانت تحترق.

A large wave of riots

امواج كبيرة من اعمال الشغب

had broken into the first projects of Paris.

بدأت بالاندلاع في باريس.

Everyone was glued to the TV,

الجميع كان ملتصقا بالتلفاز,

watching disturbing, frightening images

يشاهدون الصور المرعبة والمزعجة

taken from the edge of the neighborhood.

والتي التقطت من الجوار.

I mean, these kids, without control,

اعني اولئك الاولاد بدون سيطرة.

throwing Molotov cocktails,

يلقون قنالبل المولوتوف,

attacking the cops and the firemen,

يهاجمون رجال الشرطة والاطفاء,

looting everything they could in the shops.

ينهبون كل ما يستطعيونه من المحلات.

These were criminals, thugs, dangerous,

كانو مجرمين ,محتالين,خطرين

destroying their own environment.

يتبعون أهوائهم .

And then I saw it -- could it be possible? --

وقد شاهدت ذلك--هل هو حقيقي؟--

my photo on a wall

صورتي على الحائط

revealed by a burning car --

كشفت بسبب سيارة محروقة--

a pasting I'd done a year earlier --

قمت بالصاقها منذ عام --

an illegal one -- still there.

غير مرخصة-- مازالت هناك.

I mean, these were the faces of my friends.

ما اعنيه, كانت لوجوه اصدقائي.

I know those guys.

اعرف اولائك الاشخاص.

All of them are not angels,

but they're not monsters either.

So it was kind of weird to see

those images and those eyes stare back at me through a television.

So I went back there

with a 28 mm lens.

It was the only one I had at that time.

But with that lens,

you have to be as close as 10 inches from the person.

So you can do it only with their trust.

So I took full portraits of people from Le Bosquet.

They were making scary faces

to play the caricature of themselves.

And then I pasted huge posters everywhere

ومن ثم الصقت ملصقات كبيرة في كل مكان

in the bourgeois area of Paris

في المنطقة البرجوازية في باريس

with the name, age, even building number

مرفقة بالاسم والعمر وحتى رقم البناية

of these guys.

لاؤلئك الاشخاص.

A year later,

بعد عام,

the exhibition was displayed in front of the city hall of Paris.

تم عرض ذلك المعرض في قاعة مدينة باريس.

And we go from thug images,

وانتقلنا من التقاط الصور,

who've been stolen and distorted by the media,

والتي سرقت وشوهت من قبل الاعلام,

who's now proudly taking over his own image.

والذي هو الان فخور بالتقاط صوره.

That's where I realized

في تلك اللحظة ادركت

the power of paper and glue.

So could art change the world?

A year later,

بعد عام,

I was listening to all the noise

كنت استمع الى كل تلك الضوضاء

about the Middle East conflict.

حول الصراع في الشرق الاوسط.

I mean, at that time, trust me,

اعني ,في ذلك الوقت, ثقوا بي,

they were only referring to the Israeli and Palestinian conflict.

كانو فقط يشيرون الى الصراع الفلسطيني الاسرائيلي

So with my friend Marco,

انا وصديقي ماركو,

we decided to go there

قررنا الذهاب الى هناك

and see who are the real Palestinians and who are the real Israelis.

ونعرف الفلسطيني الحقيقي والاسرائيلي الحقيقي.

Are they so different?

هل هم مختلفون؟

When we got there, we just went in the street,

عندما وصلنا الى هناك, ذهبنا الى الشارع,

started talking with people everywhere,

بدأنا في الحديث الى الناس في كل مكان,

and we realized that things were a bit different

وادركنا ان الاشياء مختلفة نوعا ما

from the rhetoric we heard in the media.

عن البلاغة التي سمعناها في الاعلام.

So we decided to take portraits

لذلك قررنا التقاط الصور الشخصية

of Palestinians and Israelis

للفلسطينيين والاسرائليين

doing the same jobs --

الذين يمارسون نفس الأعمال--

taxi-driver, lawyer, cooks.

سائقو التاكسي, المحامين, الطهاة.

Asked them to make a face as a sign of commitment.

وطلبنا منهم تعديل ملامح وجوههم لاظهار الجدية.

Not a smile -- that really doesn't tell

ليست ابتسامة-- انها لا تقول شيئا

about who you are and what you feel.

عن من تكون وما الذي تشعر به.

They all accepted

لقد وافقوا جميعا

to be pasted next to the other.

ان يتم الصاقهم بجوار بعظهم البعض.

I decided to paste

قررت ان الصق

in eight Israeli and Palestinian cities

في ثمان مدن اسرائيلية وفلسطينية

and on both sides of the wall.

وعلى جانبي الحائط.

We launched the biggest illegal art exhibition ever.

لقد اطلقنا اكبر معرض غير شرعي على الاطلاق.

We called the project Face 2 Face.

اطلقنا عليه اسم وجه لوجه.

The experts said, "No way.

الخبراء قالوا "لا يمكن.

The people will not accept.

الناس لن تقبل ؟

The army will shoot you, and Hamas will kidnap you."

الجنود سوف يطلقون النار عليكم, وحماس سوف تختطفكم."

We said, "Okay, let's try and push as far as we can."

قلنا " حسنا دعونا نحاول وسنمضي الى اقصى ما يمكن"

I love the way that people will ask me,

احببت الطريقة التي كان يسالني بها الناس,

"How big will my photo be?"

"كم سوف يكون حجم صورتي؟"

"It will be as big as your house."

"سوف تكون في كبر منزلك."

When we did the wall, we did the Palestinian side.

عندما عملنا على ذلك الحائط في الجانب الفلسطيني.

So we arrived with just our ladders

وصلنا ومعنا سلالمنا فقط

and we realized that they were not high enough.

وادركنا انها لم تكن طويلة بما يكفي.

And so Palestinians guys say,

لذلك قال لنا بعض الفلسطينيين,

"Calm down. No wait. I'm going to find you a solution."

"اهدأوا . انتظرو,سوف اجد حلا لهذه المشكلة."

So he went to the Church of Nativity

فذهب الى كنيسة الميلاد

and brought back an old ladder

that was so old that it could have seen Jesus being born.

كان قديما لدرجة انه قد يكون حضر ميلاد المسيح.

(Laughter)

We did Face 2 Face with only six friends,

انجزنا مشروع وجه لوجه بواسطة ستة اصدقاء,

two ladders, two brushes,

واثنين من السلالم, وفرشتان,

a rented car, a camera

سيارة مستأجرة وكاميرا

and 20,000 square feet of paper.

و 20000 متر مربع من الورق.

We had all sorts of help

حصلنا على جميع انواع المساعدة

from all walks of life.

من الجميع.

Okay, for example, that's Palestine.

حسنا, على سبيل المثال, هذه فلسطين.

We're in Ramallah right now.

We're pasting portraits --

so both portraits in the streets in a crowded market.

People come around us and start asking,

"Oh, we're actually doing an art project

And those ones are actually two taxi-drivers."

And then there was always a silence.

"You mean you're pasting an Israeli face --

doing a face -- right here?"

تضع وجه هنا ؟"

"Well, yeah, yeah, that's part of the project."

"حسنا , نعم ,نعم , ان ذلك جزء من المشروع."

And I would always leave that moment,

وكنت دائما اترك تلك الحظة.

and we would ask them,

ومن ثم نسألهم,

"So can you tell me who is who?"

" هل بامكانكم اخبارنا من يكون كل منهما؟"

And most of them couldn't say.

ومعظمهم لا يمكنهم الاجابة.

We even pasted on Israeli military towers,

لقد قمنا بالالصاق على ابراج اسرائلية عسكرية,

and nothing happened.

When you paste an image, it's just paper and glue.

عندما نلصق صورة. ذلك عبارة عن ورق وغراء.

People can tear it, tag on it, or even pee on it --

الناس بامكانهم تمزيقها,ركلها, او حتى التبول عليها --

some are a bit high for that, I agree --

بعضها تبدو عالية لعمل شيء كهذا,اتفق معكم--

but the people in the street,

لكن الناس في الشارع,

they are the curator.

هم القيمون عليها.

The rain and the wind will take them off anyway.

المطر والرياح سوف تنزعها على اية حال.

They are not meant to stay.

But exactly four years after,

لكن بالضبط بعد اربعة اعوام,

the photos, most of them are still there.

الصور,معضمها ماتزال موجودة.

Face 2 Face demonstrated

وجه لوجه اثبت

that what we thought impossible was possible --

ان ما كنا تعتقد انه مستحيل اصبح ممكنا--

and, you know what, even easy.

وكان ايضا سهلا.

We didn't push the limit;

لم نتخطى الحدود,

we just showed that they were further than anyone thought.

لكن اثبتنا اننا متقدمين على اي شخص اخر.

In the Middle East, I experienced my work

في الشرق الاوسط,اختبرت عملي

in places without [many] museums.

في اماكن بدون متاحف.

So the reactions in the street

لذلك هذا التوجه في الشارع

were kind of interesting.

كان حقا مشوق

So I decided to go further in this direction

لذلك قررت المضي قدما في هذا الاتجاه

and go in places where there were zero museums.

والذهاب الى اماكن حيث لا يوجد متاحف على الاطلاق.

When you go in these developing societies,

عندما تذهب الى تلك المجتمعات النامية,

women are the pillars of their community,

تكون المرأة هي عامود المجتمع,

but the men are still the ones holding the streets.

لكن الرجال هم من يسيطرون على الشوارع.

So we were inspired to create a project

لذلك كنا نرغب في عمل مشروع

where men will pay tribute to women

حيث الرجال يقومون بدفع الجزية للنساء

by posting their photos.

بالصاق صورهن.

I called that project Women Are Heroes.

اسميت ذلك المشروع "النساء بطلات".

When I listened to all the stories

عندما استمعت لتلك القصص

everywhere I went on the continents,

حيثما ذهبت في القارات,

I couldn't always understand

استطعت دائما ان افهم

the complicated circumstances of their conflict.

الملابسات المعقدة لصراعاتهم,

I just observed.

انا راقبت فقط.

Sometimes there was no words,

بعض الاحيان لم تكن هناك كلمات,

no sentence, just tears.

ولا جمل, فقط دموع.

I just took their pictures

التقطت صورهن

and pasted them.

والصقتها.

Women Are Heroes took me around the world.

مشروع "النساء بطلات" اخذني حول العالم.

Most of the places I went to,

معضم الاماكن التي زرتها

I decided to go there

قررت الذهاب اليها

because I've heard about it through the media.

لانني سمعت عنها عبر الاعلام.

So for example, in June 2008,

على سبيل المثال, في 2008,

I was watching TV in Paris,

كنت اشاهد التلفاز في باريس,

and then I heard about this terrible thing

عندما سمعت عن ذلك الشيء الفظيع

that happened in Rio de Janeiro --

الذي حدث في ريو دي جينيرو.

the first favela of Brazil named Providencia.

في احدى قرى البرازيل وتسمى برفيدينسيا.

Three kids -- that was three students --

ثلاثة اولاد-- كانوا طلبة--

were [detained] by the army

تم احتجازهم من قبل الجيش

because they were not carrying their papers.

لانهم لم يكونوا يحملون اوراقا ثبوتية.

And the army took them,

فاخذهم الجيش,

and instead of bringing them to the police station,

وبدلا من تسليمهم الى مركز الشرطة,

they brought them to an enemy favela

تم تسليمهم الى الاعداء

where they get chopped into pieces.

حيث تم تقطيعهم الى اجزاء.

I was shocked.

لقد صدمت.

All Brazil was shocked.

البرازيل بكاملها قد صدمت.

I heard it was one of the most violent favelas,

سمعت انه كان احد الاعتداءت الصارخة,

because the largest drug cartel controls it.

لانه كان يتحكم فيه اكبر احتكر للمخدرات.

So I decided to go there.

لذلك قررت الذهاب الى هناك .

When I arrived --

وعندما وصلت--

I mean, I didn't have any contact with any NGO.

اعني ,انني لم يكن لدي اي اتفاق مع اي من المنظمات غير الحكومية.

There was none in place -- no association, no NGOs, nothing --

لم يكن هناك اي منها لم يكن هناك وكالات سياحية ,لم يكن هناك اي شيى على الاطلاق--

no eyewitnesses.

ولا شهود عيان

So we just walked around,

كنا نتجول فقط,

and we met a woman,

وقابلنا امرأة

and I showed her my book.

وأريتها كتابي.

And she said, "You know what?

وقالت " هل تعلم"؟

We're hungry for culture.

نحن تواقون للثقافة

We need culture out there."

نريد الثقافة في كل مكان."

So I went out and I started with the kids.

فذهبت وبدأت مع الاطفال.

I just took a few photos of the kids,

فقط التقطت بعض الصور للاطفال,

and the next day I came with the posters and we pasted them.

وفي اليوم التالي جلبت الملصقات وبدأنا لصقها.

The day after, I came back and they were already scratched.

عدت في اليوم التالي , ووجدت انه قد تم تمزيقها.

But that's okay.

لم انزعج لذلك.

I wanted them to feel that this art belongs to them.

اردتهم ان يشعرون انها تخصهم.

Then the next day, I held a meeting on the main square

لذلك وفي اليوم التالي عقدت اجتماعا في الميدان الرئيسي

and some women came.

وحضر بعض النسوة.

They were all linked to the three kids that got killed.

كلهم كان لديهن صلة قرابة بالاطفال الذين قتلوا.

There was the mother, the grandmother, the best friend --

كانت هناك الام ,والجدة. والصديقة.

they all wanted to shout the story.

كانو جميعا يريدون ابراز القصة.

After that day,

بعد ذلك اليوم,

everyone in the favela gave me the green light.

كل شخص في القرية اعطاني الضوء الاخضر.

I took more photos, and we started the project.

التقطت المزيد من الصور وبدأت المشروع.

The drug lords were kind of worried

كان تجار المخدرات يشعرون بنوع من القلق

about us filming in the place,

so I told them, "You know what?

I'm not interested in filming the violence and the weapons.

You see that enough in the media.

What I want to show is the incredible life and energy.

I've been seeing it around me the last few days."

So that's a really symbolic pasting,

بالتالي فان هذا عبارة عن تعبير رمزي,

because that's the first one we did that you couldn't see from the city.

And that's where the three kids got arrested,

وهذا هو المكان الذي قُبض فيه على الأولاد الثلاثة ,

and that's the grandmother of one of them.

وهذه جدة احدهم.

And on that stairs,

وعلى تلك السلالم,

that's where the traffickers always stand

حيث اعتاد التجار ان يقفوا

and there's a lot of exchange of fire.

وهناك الكثير من تبادل اطلاق النار.

Everyone there understood the project.

الجميع هناك فهم المشروع.

And then we pasted everywhere -- the whole hill.

وقمنا باعمال اللصق في كل مكان--على كامل التلة.

What was interesting is that the media couldn't get in.

والممتع في الامر ان الاعلام لم يكن يستطيع الوصول لنا.

I mean, you should see that.

اعني,يجب ان تشاهدوا ذلك بانفسكم .

They would have to film us from a really long distance by helicopter

كان يتوجب عليهم تصويرنا من مسافات بعيدة باستخدام طائرات الهيلكوبتر

and then have a really long lens,

باستخدام عدسات بعيدة المدى,

and we would see ourselves, on TV, pasting.

وكنا نشاهد انفسنا على التلفاز ونحن نقوم باللصق.

And they would put a number: "Please call this number

وكانو يضعون رقم هاتف:" الرجاء الاتصال على هذا الرقم

if you know what's going on in Providencia."

اذا كنت تعرف مالذي يجري في بروفيدينسيا."

We just did a project and then left

قمنا بتنفيذ المشروع ثم رحلنا

so the media wouldn't know.

لذلك لم يعرف الاعلام اي شيء

So how can we know about the project?

اذا كيف يمكنن معرفة اي شيئ عن المشروع؟

So they had to go and find the women

اذا كان عليهم التوجه الى هناك ومقابلة النساء

and get an explanation from them.

واخذ التفصيل منهن.

So you create a bridge between the media

وبذلك انشأنا جسرا بين الاعلام

and the anonymous women.

والنساء العاديات.

We kept traveling.

واصلنا الترحال.

We went to Africa, Sudan, Sierra Leone,

ذهبنا الى افريقيا.السودان,سيراليون,

Liberia, Kenya.

ليبيريا,كينيا.

In war-torn places like Monrovia,

في مناطق نزاع مسلح مثل مونوروفيا,

people come straight to you.

ياتي الناس مباشرة اليك.

I mean, they want to know what you're up to.

يريدون معرفة ما لذي تنوي فعله.

They kept asking me, "What is the purpose of your project?

ودائما يسألونني,"ما هو الغرض من هذا المشروع؟

Are you an NGO? Are you the media?"

هل انتم من منظمات غير حكومية؟ هل انتم اعلاميون؟"

Art. Just doing art.

الفن , فقط اعمل الفن.

Some people question, "Why is it in black and white?

بعض الاشخاص يسالونني , لماذا بالاسود والابيض؟

Don't you have color in France?"

الا يوجد لديكم الوان في فرنسا؟"

(Laughter)

Or they tell you, "Are these people all dead?"

او يقولون,"هل جميع هؤلاء الناس ميتين؟"

Some who understood the project would explain it to others.

بعض الذين يفهمون المشروع يقومون بشرحه للاخرين.

And to a man who did not understand, I heard someone say,

وللرجل الذي لم يفهم,سمعت احدهم يقول,

"You know, you've been here for a few hours

"لقد بقيت هنا لعدة ساعات

trying to understand, discussing with your fellows.

تحاول الفهم ,والنقاش مع زملاءك.

During that time, you haven't thought about

وخلال هذه المدة لم تفكر

what you're going to eat tomorrow.

ماذا سوف تأكل في الغد

I think it's people's curiosity

that motivates them

to come into the projects.

للحضور الى المشاريع.

And then it becomes more.

ومن ثم يصبحون اكثر فضولية

It becomes a desire, a need, an armor.

اصبحت رغبة,حاجة,[غير واضح].

On this bridge that's in Monrovia,

على هذا الجسر في مونروفيا,

ex-rebel soldiers helped us pasting a portrait

جندي متمرد سابق ساعدنا على الصاق صورة

of a woman that might have been raped during the war.

لسيدة يُعتقد انها اغتصبت اثناء الحرب.

Women are always the first ones targeted

النساء دائما هن اول الضحايا

during conflict.

في النزاعات.

This is Kibera, Kenya,

هذه كيبيرا,كينيا,

one of the largest slums of Africa.

احد اكبر الاحياء الفقيرة في افريقيا

You might have seen images about the post-election violence

ربما شاهدتم صور عن نزاع الانتخابات

that happened there in 2008.

الذي حصل هناك في 2008

This time we covered the roofs of the houses,

في هذه المرة غطينا اسطح المنازل,

but we didn't use paper,

لكننا لم نستخدم الورق,

because paper doesn't prevent the rain

لان الورق لا يمنع المطر

from leaking inside the house --

من التسرب الى داخل المنزل--

vinyl does.

الفينيل يقوم بتلك المهمة.

Then art becomes useful.

وبالتالي يصبح الفن مفيدا.

So the people kept it.

وبالتالي يحتفظ به الناس.

You know what I love is, for example, when you see the biggest eye there,

اتعلمون مالذي احبه , على سبيل المثال, عندم تشاهدون هذه العين الكبيرة هناك,

there are so [many] houses inside.

هناك العديد من البيوت في الداخل.

And I went there a few months ago --

وذهبت هناك منذ عدة اشهر --

photos are still there -- and it was missing a piece of the eye.

So I asked the people what happened.

"Oh, that guy just moved."

When the roofs were covered, a woman said as a joke,

"Now God can see me."

"الان يستطيع الرب رؤيتي"

When you look at Kibera now,

عندما تنظر الى كيبيرا الان,

they look back.

يبادلونك النظر.

Okay, India.

حسنا,الهند.

Before I start that, just so you know,

قبل ان ابدا ,انتم تعلمون,

each time we go to a place, we don't have authorization,

في كل مكان نذهب اليه, لا يكون لدينا وكالة سياحية,

so we set up like commandos --

لذلك ننتظم مثل الكوماندوز--

we're a group of friends who arrive there,

نحن مجموعة من الاصدقاء الذين يصلون الى المكان,

and we try to paste on the walls.

وينشرع في اللصق على الحيطان

But there are places where you just can't paste on a wall.

ولكن هناك بعض الاماكن حيث لا يمكنك اللصق على الحائط.

In India it was just impossible to paste.

في الهند على سبيل المثال كان من المستحيل اللصق.

I heard culturally and because of the law,

سمعت انه بسبب الثقافة وايضا القانون,

they would just arrest us at the first pasting.

القوا القبض علينا مع اول عملية لصق.

So we decided to paste white,

لذلك قررنا ان نلصق البياض,

white on the walls.

البياض على الحيطان.

So imagine white guys pasting white papers.

تخيل رجال بيض يقومون بلصق اوراق بيضاء.

So people would come to us and ask us,

كان الناس يأتون الينا ويسالوننا,

"Hey, what are you up to?"

"مالذي تفعلونه؟"

"Oh, you know, we're just doing art." "Art?"

نحن نقوم بعمل الفن" " الفن؟"

Of course, they were confused.

بالطبع ,هم مشوشون.

But you know how India has a lot of dust in the streets,

في الهند هناك الكثير من التراب في الشوارع,

and the more dust you would have

وكلما كثر الغبار

going up in the air,

وارتفع في الهواء

on the white paper you can almost see,

كلما امكنك مشاهدة ما على الورق الابيض,

but there is this sticky part

يوجد هناك ذلك الجزء اللاصق

like when you reverse a sticker.

كالذي تجده في الصقة المقلوبة.

So the more dust you have, the more it will reveal the photo.

من ثم كلما زاد الغبار,كلما وضحت الصورة.

So we could just walk in the street during the next days

وبالتالي عندما كنا نتجول في الشارع في الايام التالية

and the photos would get revealed by themselves.

كانت الصور تظهر من تلقاء نفسها.

And most of what you see -- that's a trailer from "Women Are Heroes" --

its images, photography,

taken one after the other.

اخذت الواحدة تلو الاخرى.

And the photos kept traveling even without us.

واخذت الصور ترحل حتى بدوننا.

Hopefully, you'll see the film,

and you'll understand the scope of the project

and what the people felt when they saw those photos.

Because that's a big part of it. There's layers behind each photo.

لان ذلك جزء كبير منه. هناك مستويات خلف كل صورة

Behind each image is a story.

هناك قصة خلف كل صورة

Women Are Heroes created a new dynamic

النساء بطلات اوجد حراكا جديدا

in each of the communities,

في كل من المجتمعات,

and the women kept that dynamic after we left.

والنساء ابقين الحراك عقب رحيلنا.

For example, we did books -- not for sale --

على سبيل المثال, عملنا كتابا -- ليس للبيع--

that all the community would get.

يمكن لجميع المجتمعات الحصول عليه.

But to get it, they would have to [get] it signed by one of the women.

لكن للحصول عليه يجب عليهم توقيعه من احدى النساء

We did that in most of the places.

We go back regularly.

And so in Providencia, for example, in the favela,

we have a cultural center running there.

In Kibera, each year we cover more roofs.

Because of course, when we left, the people who were just at the edge of the project

said, "Hey, what about my roof?"

So we decided to come the year after

and keep doing the project.

A really important point for me

is that I don't use any brand or corporate sponsors.

to anyone but myself

and the subjects.

one of the more important things in the work.

I think, today,

as important as the result is the way you do things.

And that has always been a central part of the work.

وذلك كان دوما جزءا اساسيا في العمل.

And what's interesting is that fine line that I have

ومما يثير الاهتمام ان هذا الخط الذي انتهجه

with images and advertising.

في الصور والاعلانات.

We just did some pasting in Los Angeles

عملنا بعض الملصقات في لوس انجلوس

on another project in the last weeks.

في مشروع اخر في الاسبوع الماضي.

And I was even invited to cover the MOCA museum.

وقد دعيت لتغطية متحف موكا.

But yesterday the city called them and said,

لكن بالامس اتصلت بهم سلطات المدينة واخبرتهم,

"Look, you're going to have to tear it down.

"انظرو,سوف نقوم بنزعها.

Because this can be taken for advertising,

لأنها تُعتبر كدعاية,

and because of the law,

وبسبب القانون,

it has to be taken down."

يجب انزالها."

But tell me, advertising for what?

لكن اعلانات لماذا؟

The people I photograph

الاشخاص الذين صورتهم

were proud to participate in the project

شاركوا في المشروع

and to have their photo in the community.

لجعل صورهم في المجتمع

But they asked me for a promise basically.

لكنهم طلبو مني الوعد بشكل اساسي.

They asked me, "Please, make our story travel with you."

لقد طلبو مني ," نرجوك,دع قصتنا ترحل معك."

So I did. That's Paris.

قمت بعمل ذلك في باريس

That's Rio.

وايضا في ريو

In each place, we built exhibitions with a story, and the story traveled.

في كل مكان انشانا معرضا لقصة ,والقصة ارتحلت.

And today, they are with you in Long Beach.

All right, recently I started a public art project

مؤخرا بدأت مشروعا فنيا عاما

where I don't use my artwork anymore.

حيث لا استخدم عملي الفني

I use Man Ray, Helen Levitt,

استخدم أعمال ماي ريفين,هيلين ليفيت,

Giacomelli, other people's artwork.

جياكوميلي, وغيرهم استخدم اعمالهم الفنية

It doesn't matter today if it's your photo or not.

لايهم اليوم اذا ما كانت صورتك ام لا

The importance is what you do

الاهم هو مالذي تفعله

with the images,

بالصور

the statement it makes where it's pasted.

الجملة التي تقولها في المكان الذي تلصق فيه.

So for example, I pasted the photo of the minaret

على سبيل المثال, الصقت صورة مئذنة

in Switzerland

في سويسرا

a few weeks after they voted the law forbidding minarets in the country.

بعد عدة اسابيع من التصويت على قرار يحظر الماذن في البلاد

This image of three men wearing gas masks

هذه صورة ثلاثة رجال يرتدون اقنعة الغاز

was taken in Chernobyl originally,

التقطت اساسا في تشيرنوبل

and I pasted it in Southern Italy,

والصقتها في شمال ايطاليا,

where the mafia sometimes bury the garbage under the ground.

حيث تقوم المافيا بدفن النفايات تحت الارض.

In some ways, art can change the world.

بطريقة ما يمكن للفن ان يغير العالم

Art is not supposed to change the world,

الفن لا يفترض به ان يغير العالم,

to change practical things,

ان يغير اشياء بعينها,

but to change perceptions.

لكن ان يغير التصورات

Art can change

الفن يمكن ان يغير

the way we see the world.

الطريقة التي نرى بها العالم.

Art can create an analogy.

الفن يمكن ان يخلق التجانس.

Actually the fact that art cannot change things

في الواقع ان حقيقة ان الفن لا يمكنه تغيير الاشياء

makes it a neutral place

يجعله مكانا محايد

for exchanges and discussions,

للتبادلات والنقاشات,

and then enables you to change the world.

ومن ثم يمكنك من تغيير العالم.

When I do my work,

عندما اقوم بعملي

I have two kinds of reactions.

يكون لدي نوعين من ردود الفعل.

People say, "Oh, why don't you go in Iraq or Afghanistan.

ناس يقولون "اوه , لماذا لا تذهب الى العراق او افغانستان.

They would be really useful."

سيكون ذلك مفيدا حقا."

Or, "How can we help?"

او,"كيف يمكننا المساعدة."

I presume that you belong to the second category,

افترض انكم تنتمون للصنف الثاني,

and that's good,

وذلك يبدو جيدا,

because for that project,

لانه لاجل ذلك المشروع,

I'm going to ask you to take the photos

اريد ان اطلب منكم التقاط الصور

and paste them.

والصاقها.
