Every language is just a group of people who agree to understand each other.

Now, sometimes when people are trying to decide whether a word is good or bad,

they don't really have a good reason.

So they say something like, "Because grammar!"

I don't actually really care about grammar too much -- don't tell anybody.

But the word "grammar," actually, there are two kinds of grammar.

There's the kind of grammar that lives inside your brain,

and if you're a native speaker of a language

တစ်ယောက်ယောက်အတွက် အဲဒါဟာ မိခင်ဘာသစကား ဖြစ်ပါက

or a good speaker of a language,

ဒါမှမဟုတ် အဲဒီစကားကို ကျွမ်းကျင်စွာ ပြောတတ်သူ ဖြစ်ပါက၊

it's the unconscious rules that you follow when you speak that language.

And this is what you learn when you learn a language as a child.

Now there is another one.

That rule lives in your brain.

You never had to be taught this rule, you just understand it.

This is an experiment that was invented by a professor at [Boston University]

So we've been talking about this for a long time.

Now, these kinds of natural rules that exist in your brain,

they're not like traffic laws, they're more like laws of nature.

And nobody has to remind you to obey a law of nature, right?

When you leave the house in the morning, your mom doesn't say,

"Hey, honey, I think it's going to be cold, take a hoodie,

Nobody says this.

Now, there are other rules that are more about manners than they are about nature.

So you can think of a word as like a hat.

Once you know how hats work,

nobody has to tell you, "Don't wear hats on your feet."

What they have to tell you is, "Can you wear hats inside?

Those are more of the second kind of grammar,

which linguists often call usage, as opposed to grammar.

သဒ္ဒါနှင့်မတူဘဲ အဲဒါကို ဘာသာဗေဒ ပညာရှင်တွေက အသုံးအနှုန်းနှင့်ဆိုင်တယ်လို့ ဆိုကြပါတယ်။

Now, sometimes people use this kind of rules-based grammar

ရံဖန်ရံခါဆိုသလို၊ လူတွေဟာ သဒ္ဒါလာ စည်းကမ်းတွေကို အသုံးပြုကာ

to discourage people from making up words.

လူတွေကို စကားလုံးတွေ ထွင်မရအောင် တားဆီးတတ်ပါတယ်။

And I think that is, well, stupid.

So, for example, people are always telling you,

လူတွေက ကျွန်မတို့ကို အမြဲလို ပြောလေ့ရှိကြတာက၊

"Be creative, make new music, do art, invent things, science and technology."

"ဉာဏ်ကို ကွန့်ပြပါ၊ ဂီတ၊ အနုပညာကို စပ်ကြပါ၊ ပစ္စည်းတွေ၊ သိပ္ပံပညာ၊ နည်းပညာတွေကို တီထွင်ကြပါ"

But when it comes to words, they're like,

ဒါပေမဲ့ စကားလုံးတွေ ကိစ္စမှာကျတော့၊

"Don't! No. Creativity stops right here, whippersnappers. Give it a rest."

"မလုပ်နဲ့! မရဘူး။ တီထွင်မှုကို ရပ်ကြတယ်။ မထိဖို့ ပြောကြတယ်။"

But that makes no sense to me.

ဒါပေမဲ့ အဲဒါဟာ ကျွန်မအတွက် အဓိပ္ပါယ် မရှိပါဘူး။

Words are great. We should have more of them.

စကားလုံးတွေဟာ သိပ်အရေးပါတယ်။ ကျွန်မတို့ဆီမှာ စကားလုံးတွေ အများကြီး ရှိသင့်ပါတယ်။

I want you to make as many new words as possible.

စကားလုံးတွေကို အဖြစ်နိုင်ဆုံး အများဆုံး ဖန်တီးဖို့ ရှင်တို့ကို တိုက်တွန်းချင်တယ်။

And I'm going to tell you six ways that you can use to make new words in English.

အင်္ဂလိပ်ဘာသာထဲမှာ စကားလုံး အသစ် တီထွင်ရေး နည်းလမ်း ခြောက်ခုကို ရှင်တို့ကို ပြောပြပါမယ်။

The first way is the simplest way.

ပထမဦးဆုံးနှင့် အလွယ်ဆုံး နည်းက၊

Basically, steal them from other languages.

အခြေခံအားဖြင့် ဒီပြင်ဘာသာစကားတွေထဲက ခိုးယူဖို့ပါပဲ။

Linguists call this borrowing,

but we never give the words back , so I'm just going to be honest

and call it stealing.

We usually take words for things that we like, like delicious food.

We took "kumquat" from Chinese, we took "caramel" from French.

We also take words for cool things like "ninja," right?

We took that from Japanese,

အဲဒါက ဂျပန်ဘာသာထဲမှပါ၊

which is kind of a cool trick because ninjas are hard to steal from.

So another way that you can make words in English

အင်္ဂလိပ်ထဲမှာ နောက်ထပ် စကားလုံးသစ် ဖန်တီးရေးနည်းက

is by squishing two other English words together.

မတူကြတဲ့ အင်္ဂလိပ် စကားလုံး ကျွန်မတို့ကို တအားရိုက်နှက် ပေါင်းစပ်ပေးလိုက်ခြင်းပါ။

This is called compounding.

အဲဒါကို ပေါင်းစပ်ပေးခြင်းလို ခေါ်ပါတယ်။

Words in English are like Lego:

အင်္ဂလိပ်ဘာသာထဲက စကားလုံးတွေဟာ Lego နှင့် တူပါတယ်:

If you use enough force, you can put any two of them together.

အတော်ကလေး အားအင်ကို သုံးနိုင်ရင် ဘယ်နှစ်ခုကိုမဆို ပေါင်းစပ်ပေးနိုင်ပါတယ်။

We do this all the time in English:

Words like "heartbroken," "bookworm," "sandcastle" all are compounds.

So go ahead and make words like "duckface," just don't make duckface.

"duckface" လို့ စကားလုံးကို ရှင်တို့ ထွင်နိုင်ပါတယ်၊ ဒါပေမဲ့ တကယ့်ကို duck ရဲ့ face ကိုတော့ မလုပ်မိကြပါစေနဲ့။

Another way that you can make words in English is kind of like compounding,

အင်္ဂလိပ် စကားလုံးများ တီထွင်ရေး နောက်နည်းတစ်ခုက ပေါင်းစပ်မှုနှင့် ခပ်ဆင်ဆင်ပါ၊

but instead you use so much force when you squish the words together

ဒါပေမဲ့၊ ပေါင်းစပ်ပေးဖို့ သုံးလိုက်တဲ့ အားက သိပ်များသွားလို့

that some parts fall off.

So these are blend words,

like "brunch" is a blend of "breakfast" and "lunch."

"brunch" ဆိုတာက "breakfast" နှင့် "lunch"ကို ရောစပ်ထားတာပါ။

"Motel" is a blend of "motor" and "hotel."

"Motel" ကျတော့ "motor" နှင့် "hotel"ကို ရောစပ်ထားတာပါ။

Who here knew that "motel" was a blend word?

"motel" ဆိုတာ အဲဒီလို ရောစပ်စကားလုံး ဖြစ်ခဲ့တာကို သိခဲ့တဲ့ သူတွေ ဒီမှာ ရှိကြလား?

Yeah, that word is so old in English

ဟုတ်ကဲ့၊ အဲဒီအင်္ဂလိပ် စကားလုံးဟာ တော်တော့ကို ဟောင်းနေပါပြီ၊

that lots of people don't know that there are parts missing.

လူတော်တော်များများက တချို့အပိုင်းတွေကို ဖြုတ်လိုက်ပြီး အဲဒီစကားလုံး ပေါ်လာတာကို မသိကြပါ။

"Edutainment" is a blend of "education" and "entertainment."

"Edutainment" ဆိုရင် "education" နှင့် "entertainment"ကို ရောစပ်ထားတာ။

And of course, "electrocute" is a blend of "electric" and "execute."

You can also make words by changing how they operate.

This is called functional shift.

အဲဒါကို လုပ်ကိုင်မှုကို ရွှေ့ပြောင်းပေးမှုလို့ ခေါ်ပါတယ်။

You take a word that acts as one part of speech,

ရှင်တို့ဟာ ဝါကျထဲက အပိုင်းတစ်ပိုင်းဖြစ်တဲ့ စကားလုံးကို ယူလိုက်ကာ၊

and you change it into another part of speech.

အဲဒါကို ဝါကျရဲ့ အခြား အပိုင်းတစ်ခုအဖြစ် ပြောင်းပစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

Okay, who here knew that "friend" hasn't always been a verb?

ကောင်းပြီ၊ "friend" ဆိုတဲ့ စကားလုံးဟာ အစဉ်ပဲ ကြိယာ ဖြစ်ခဲ့တာ ဘယ်သူတွေများ သိခဲ့ကြလဲ?

"Friend" used to be noun and then we verbed it.

"Friend" ဟာ နာမ် ဖြစ်ခဲ့တာမှန်ပေမဲ့၊ နောက်ပိုင်းမှာ ကျွန်မတို့က အဲဒါကို ကြိယာ လုပ်ပစ်လိုက်တယ်။

Almost any word in English can be verbed.

အင်္ဂလိပ်စာထဲက စကားလုံးတိုင်းလိုလိုကို ကြိယာ လုပ်ပစ်လို့ ရနိုင်ပါတယ်။

You can also take adjectives and make them into nouns.

ပြီးတော့ နာမ်ဝိသေသနကို ယူပြီးတော့ နာမ်ဆိုပြီး လုပ်ပစ်လို့ ရနိုင်ပါတယ်။

"Commercial" used to be an adjective and now it's a noun.

"Commercial" ဆိုတဲ့ စကားလုံးဟာ နာမ်ဝိသေသန ဖြစ်ခဲ့မေပဲ့ အခုတော့ နာမ် ဖြစ်နေပြီလေ။

And of course, you can "green" things.

ပြီးတော့ ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ အရာတိုင်းကို "green"ပစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

Another way to make words in English is back-formation.

အင်္ဂလိပ်ဘာသာထဲက စကားလုံးတွေ ဖန်တီးရေ နောက်တစ်နည်းကို နောက်ကြောင်းပြန်ဖေါ်မှု ခေါ်ပါတယ်။

You can take a word and you can kind of squish it down a little bit.

စကားလုံး တစ်လုံးကို ယူလိုက်ကာ နည်းနည်းလေး ဖြည့်ညှစ်ထုတ်လိုက်တာပါ။

So for example, in English we had the word "editor" before we had the word "edit."

အဲဒီလို ဥပမာက အင်္ဂလိပ်စာထဲက "editor"ပါ၊ နောက်ပိုင်းမှာ "edit"ကို ရယူခဲ့တာပါ။

"Edit" was formed from "editor."

ဒီလိုနည်းဖြင့် "Edit" ကို "editor" ထဲကနေပြီး ဖေါ်ထုတ်ခဲ့တာပါ။

Sometimes these back-formations sound a little silly:

တစ်ခါတစ်ရံမှာ အဲဒီလို နောက်ပြန် ဖေါ်ထုတ်မှုဟာ အဓိပ္ပါယ် မရှိလိုက်တာလို့ ထင်ရပါတယ်:

Bulldozers bulldoze, butlers butle and burglers burgle.

Bulldozers တွေက bulldoze၊ butlers တွေက butle နှင့် burglers တွေက burgle ပေါ့လေ။

Another way to make words in English

အင်္ဂလိပ်စကားလုံးတွေ ဖန်တီးရေးနည်းလမ်း နောက်ထပ် ရှိပါတယ်။

is to take the first letters of something and squish them together.

အရာတချို့ရဲ့ ပထမ အက္ခရာတွေကို ယူလိုက်ကာ အတူတူ ပေါင်းစပ် ပေးလိုက်ပါ။

So National Aeronautics and Space Administration becomes NASA.

အဲဒီလိုနည်းဖြင့် National Aeronautics and Space Administration ဟာ NASA ဖြစ်လာတယ်။

And of course you can do this with anything, OMG!

ရှင်တို့ဟာ ဘာမဆိုကို ယူပြီး အဲဒီလို လုပ်လို့ ရပါတယ်၊ OMG!

So it doesn't matter how silly the words are.

ဆိုလိုချင်တာက စကားလုံးတွေ အဓိပ္ပါယ် မရှိခြင်းဟာ သိပ် အရေးမကြီးပါဘူး။

They can be really good words of English.

အဲဒီလို စကားလုံးတွေဟာ တကယ်ကောင်းတဲ့ အင်္ဂလိပ် စကားလုံး မဖြစ်နိုင်ကြပါ။

"Absquatulate" is a perfectly good word of English.

"Absquatulate" ဆိုရင် တကယ့်ကို ကောင်းလှတဲ့ အင်္ဂလိပ် စကားလုံးပါ။

"Mugwump" is a perfectly good word of English.

"Mugwump" ကလည်း အလားတူပဲ ကောင်းလှတဲ့ အင်္ဂလိပ် စကားလုံးပါ။

So the words don't have have to sound normal, they can sound really silly.

ဒီတော့၊ စကားလုံးတွေဟာ ပုံမှန် အသံထွက်ဖို့ မလိုပါဘူး၊ ၎င်းတို့ရဲ့ အသံထွက်ဟာ အဓိပ္ပါယ်မဲ့နိုင်ပါတယ်။

Why should you make words?

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ဘာ့ကြောင့် စကားလုံးတွေကို တီထွင်ဖို့ လိုတာလဲ?

You should make words because every word

စကားလုံး တစ်လုံးစီဟာ ကိုယ့်ကိုကိုယ် ဖေါ်ထုတ်ပြသဖို့ အခွင့်အလမ်းဖြစ်သလို

is a chance to express your idea and get your meaning across.

ရှင်ဆိုလိုချင်တဲ့ အဓိပ္ပါယ်ကို သူများအား အသိပေးဖို့ လိုအပ်ပါတယ်။

And new words grab people's attention.

ပြီးတော့ စကားလုံး အသစ်တွေဟာ ပြည်သူတွေရဲ့အာရုံကို စွဲဆောင်ယူနိုင်ပါတယ်။

They get people to focus on what you're saying

ရှင်က ပြောချင်တာကို ပြည်သူတွေ အာရုံပြုလာဖို့ကို ကူညီပေးပါတယ်၊

and that gives you a better chance to get your meaning across.

ရှင်တို့ဟာ ရှင်တို့ ဆိုလိုချင်တာကို အများကို မသိပေးဖို့ အခွင့်အလမ်းကောင်း တစ်ခုပါ။

A lot of people on this stage today have said,

ကျွန်မ အခုရပ်နေတဲ့ စင်ပေါ်ကနေပြီး လူတော်တော်များများက၊

"In the future, you can do this,

"အနာဂတ်မှာ၊ ရှင်တို့ ဒါကို လုပ်နိုင်မယ်၊

you can help with this, you can help us explore, you can help us invent."
