I'm a lexicographer.

I make dictionaries.

And my job as a lexicographer

is to try to put all the words possible into the dictionary.

My job is not to decide what a word is; that is your job.

Everybody who speaks English decides together

what's a word and what's not a word.

Every language is just a group of people who agree to understand each other.

لە ڕاستیدا هیچ هۆکارێکی باشیان نییە.

ئەوان هەندێک شت دەڵێن وەکو، "لەبەر ڕێزمان!"

Now, sometimes when people are trying to decide whether a word is good or bad,

لە ڕاستیدا من زۆر گرنگی بە ڕێزمان نادەم-- ئەوە بە کەس مەڵێ.

they don't really have a good reason.

So they say something like, "Because grammar!"

بەڵام لە ڕاستیدا وشەی "ڕێزمان"، دوو جۆر ڕێزمان هەیە.

جۆرێک لە ڕێزمان ئەوەیە کە لەناو مێشکتدا بوونی هەیە.

I don't actually really care about grammar too much -- don't tell anybody.

But the word "grammar," actually, there are two kinds of grammar.

یان قسەکەرێکی باش بیت لە زمانێک،

ئەمە یاسا هەست پێنەکراوەکانن تۆ پەیڕەویان دەکەیت کاتێک بەو زمانە قسە دەکەی.

There's the kind of grammar that lives inside your brain,

و ئەوەیە کە تۆ فێری دەبیت کاتێک بە منداڵی فێری زمانێک دەبیت.

and if you're a native speaker of a language

or a good speaker of a language,

و ئەوەتا نموونەیەک:

ئەمە بەچکەیەکە، وایە ؟

it's the unconscious rules that you follow when you speak that language.

ئەمە بەچکەیە.

And this is what you learn when you learn a language as a child.

ئێستا دانەیەکیتریش هەیە.

دوو دانە لەوەی لێیە.

And here's an example:

ئەوانە دوو...

بینەران: بەچکەن

This is a wug, right?

ئێرن مکین: زۆر ڕاستە! ئێوە دەزانن کە کۆی بەچکە دروست بکەن.

It's a wug.

Now there is another one.

ئەو یاسایە لەناو مێشکتاندا دەژی

There are two of these.

تۆ هەرگیز فێری ئەم یاسایە نەکراوی، تەنها لێی تێدەگەی.

There are two ...

Audience: Wugs.

Erin McKean: Exactly! You know how to make the plural of wug.

That rule lives in your brain.

ناوی جین گلیسۆن ە کە دەگەڕێتەوە بۆ١٩٥٨.

You never had to be taught this rule, you just understand it.

ئێمە ماوەیەکی درێژە لەسەر ئەمە قسە دەکەین.

This is an experiment that was invented by a professor at [Boston University]

ئێستا، ئەو جۆرانەی کە یاسای سرووشتین لە مێشکتاندا بوونی هەیە،

named Jean Berko Gleason back in 1958.

ئەوان یاساکانی ترافیک نین، زیاتر وەکو یاساکانی سروشتن.

So we've been talking about this for a long time.

و هیچ کەسێک بیرت ناخاتەوە بۆ گوێڕایەڵی کردنی یاسای سرووشت، ڕاستە؟

Now, these kinds of natural rules that exist in your brain,

کاتێک لە بەیانیاندا ماڵەوە جێ دەهێڵیت، دایکت ناڵێت،

they're not like traffic laws, they're more like laws of nature.

"هێی، ئازیزم، پێموایە سارد دەبێت، بلوزەکەت ببە،

And nobody has to remind you to obey a law of nature, right?

لە بیری نەکەیت کە گوێڕایەڵی یاسای زەمین کێشی بیت."

کەس ئەوە ناڵێت.

When you leave the house in the morning, your mom doesn't say,

ئێستا، چەند یاسایەکیترمان هەیە زیاتر دەربارەی شێوەیە نەک سرووشت.

"Hey, honey, I think it's going to be cold, take a hoodie,

don't forget to obey the law of gravity."

Nobody says this.

تۆ دەتوانیت بیر لە وشەی کڵاو بکەیتەوە.

Now, there are other rules that are more about manners than they are about nature.

هەرتاکێکتان دەزانن کڵاو چۆن کار دەکات،

پێویست ناکات هیچ کەسێک ئەوەت پێ بڵێ، کڵاو لەبەرلاقەکانت مەکە"

ئەوەی پێویستە پێتی بڵێن ئەوەیە، دەتوانیت لە ژوورەوە کڵاو لەسه‌ر بکەیت؟"

So you can think of a word as like a hat.

Once you know how hats work,

کێ کڵاو لەسه‌ر دەکات؟

جۆری ئەو کڵاوانە چیە کە تۆ لەسەری دەکەی؟"

nobody has to tell you, "Don't wear hats on your feet."

ئەمانە زیاتر جۆری دووەمی ڕێزمانن،

What they have to tell you is, "Can you wear hats inside?

کە ئەمە لای زمانزانەکان پێی دەوترێت بەکارهێنان، بە بەراورد بە ڕێزمان.

Who gets to wear a hat?

What are the kinds of hats you get to wear?"

ئێستا، هەندێ کات خەڵك ئەم جۆرە یاسا بنچینەیەی ڕێزمان بەکار دەهێنن.

Those are more of the second kind of grammar,

which linguists often call usage, as opposed to grammar.

بۆ وەستاندنی خه‌ڵك لە دروست کردنی وشە.

و من پێموایە، باشە، گەمژانەیە.

Now, sometimes people use this kind of rules-based grammar

بۆ نموونە، هەمیشە خەڵك پێت دەڵێن،

to discourage people from making up words.

درووستکەربە، موزیکی نوێ درووست بکە" وێنە بکێشە، داهێنانکە، زانست و تەکنەلۆژیا."

And I think that is, well, stupid.

So, for example, people are always telling you,

بەڵام کاتێك دێتە سەر وشە، ئەوان وەکو ئەوەن

"وامەکە! نەخێر. ئەو کاتە داهێنان دەوەستێت، هیچوپوچی فشەکەر، کەمێك پشوی پێ بدە."

"Be creative, make new music, do art, invent things, science and technology."

(پێکەنین)

بەڵام هیچ مانایەکی نییە بۆ من.

But when it comes to words, they're like,

وشەکان زۆر باشن. پێویستە زیاترمان هەبێت.

"Don't! No. Creativity stops right here, whippersnappers. Give it a rest."

دەمەوێت چەندی پێتان دەکرێت وشە درووست بکەن.

(Laughter)

But that makes no sense to me.

من شەش ڕێگەتان پێ دەڵێم کاریبهێنن بۆ دروست کردنی وشەی نوێ لە ئینگلیزیدا

Words are great. We should have more of them.

I want you to make as many new words as possible.

یەکەم ڕێگە سادەترین ڕێگەیە.

بە زۆری، لە زمانیترەوە دزراوە.

And I'm going to tell you six ways that you can use to make new words in English.

["بڕۆن لە خەڵکیتری بستێنن"] (پێکەنین)

The first way is the simplest way.

زمانزانەکان بە قەرز کردن ناوی دەبەن،

Basically, steal them from other languages.

بەڵام هەرگیز وشەکانمان نەگەڕاندۆتەوە، بۆیە من ڕاستگۆ دەبم

["Go rob other people"] (Laughter)

و بە دزین ناوی دەبەم.

هەمیشە وشەکان لەو شتانەوە وەردەگرین حەزمان لێیە، وەکو خواردنی بەتام.

Linguists call this borrowing,

but we never give the words back , so I'm just going to be honest

"kumquat"مان لە چینیەوە وەرگرتوە، "caramel" مان لە فەرەنسیەوە وەرگرتووە.

and call it stealing.

هەروەها وشەکانمان بۆ شتە خۆشەکان وەرگرتووە وەک "ninja"، ڕاسته‌؟

We usually take words for things that we like, like delicious food.

ئەوەمان لە یابانی وەرگرتووە،

جۆرە فێڵێکی باش بوو چونکە دزیکردن لە نینجا قورسە.

We took "kumquat" from Chinese, we took "caramel" from French.

We also take words for cool things like "ninja," right?

ڕێگەیەکیتر بۆ درووست کردنی وشەکان لە ئینگلیزیدا

We took that from Japanese,

which is kind of a cool trick because ninjas are hard to steal from.

ئەوەیە کە بە داتاشینی دوو وشەیتری ئینگلیزی بەیەکەوە،

(Laughter)

ئەمە بە تێکەڵە ناو دەبرێت.

So another way that you can make words in English

وشەی لە ئینگلیزیدا وەک Lego:

ئەگەر هێزی تەواو بەکار بهێنیت، دەتوانی هەر کام لەو دوانە بەیەکەوە دانێی.

is by squishing two other English words together.

(پێکەنین)

This is called compounding.

هەموو کات لە ئینگلیزیدا ئاوا دەکەین:

Words in English are like Lego:

وشەی وەکو "bookworm,""heartbroken," "sandcastle" هەموویان تێکەڵەن.

If you use enough force, you can put any two of them together.

(Laughter)

بەردەوامبە وشەی وەک "duckface"، دروست بكه‌ بەس دەموچاوت مەکە بە هی مراوی.

We do this all the time in English:

Words like "heartbroken," "bookworm," "sandcastle" all are compounds.

ڕێگەیەکیتر بۆ درووستکردنی وشە لە ئینگلیزی دا جۆرێکە هەروەکو تێکەڵەیە،

So go ahead and make words like "duckface," just don't make duckface.

بەڵام لەبری بەکار هێنانی هێزی زۆر ئەوکاتەی تۆ وشەکانت بەیەکەوە داتاشیوە

Another way that you can make words in English is kind of like compounding,

هەندێک بەشیان لێ دەبێتەوە.

ئەمانە وشەی تێکەڵ کراون،

but instead you use so much force when you squish the words together

وه‌ك "brunch" تێكه‌ڵكراوی "lunch"و "breakfast" ه‌.

"motel" تێكه‌ڵكراوی "hotel"و "motor" ه‌.

that some parts fall off.

So these are blend words,

لێرە کێ دەیزانی کە "motel" وشەیەکی تێکەڵکراوە؟

like "brunch" is a blend of "breakfast" and "lunch."

بەڵێ، ئەوە وشەیەکی زۆر کۆنی ئینگلیزیە

زۆر خەڵک نازانن کە بەشەکانیتری نادیارن.

"Motel" is a blend of "motor" and "hotel."

Who here knew that "motel" was a blend word?

"Edutainment" تێكه‌ڵكراوی "entertsinment"و"education" ه‌.

Yeah, that word is so old in English

به‌دڵنیاییه‌وه‌، "electrocute" تێكه‌ڵكراوی "execute"و"electric" ه‌.

that lots of people don't know that there are parts missing.

"Edutainment" is a blend of "education" and "entertainment."

هەروەها دەتوانی وشە درووستبکەیت بە گۆڕینی کە ئەوان چۆن کار دەکەن.

And of course, "electrocute" is a blend of "electric" and "execute."

پێی دەوترێ لادانی فرمانی چالاک.

وشەیەک وەردەگری نواندن دەکات وەک بەشێکی ئاخافتن

(Laughter)

و تۆ دەیگۆڕیت بۆ بەشێکیتری ئاخافتن.

You can also make words by changing how they operate.

باشە، کێ لێرە دەیزانی "friend" هەمیشە نابێت بە کار؟

This is called functional shift.

You take a word that acts as one part of speech,

"friend" وا هاتبوو ناو بێت و دواتر کردمان بە کار.

and you change it into another part of speech.

Okay, who here knew that "friend" hasn't always been a verb?

نزیکەی هەر وشه‌یه‌ک لە ئینگلیزیدا دەتوانرێ ببێت بە کار.

هەروەها دەتوانیت هاوەڵناوەکان ببەیت و بیانکەی بە ناو.

"Friend" used to be noun and then we verbed it.

"Commerical" وا هاتووه‌ هاوه‌ڵناو بێت ئێستا کراوە بە ناو.

Almost any word in English can be verbed.

بە دڵنیایەوە، دەتوانی شتەکان بکەی به‌ "green".

You can also take adjectives and make them into nouns.

ڕێگایەکیتری درووستکردنی وشە لە ئینگلیزیدا چاوگە.

"Commercial" used to be an adjective and now it's a noun.

دەتوانیت وشەیەک وەرگریت و کەمێکی لێ داتاشیت.

And of course, you can "green" things.

بۆ نموونە، لە ئینگلیزیدا وشەی"editor" مان هەبوو پێش ئەوەی وشەی "edit" مان هه‌بێت.

Another way to make words in English is back-formation.

You can take a word and you can kind of squish it down a little bit.

"edit" فۆڕمێکی وەرگیراوە لە "editor".

هەندێک کات ئەو چاوگانە دەنگیان کەمێک گەمژانەیە:

So for example, in English we had the word "editor" before we had the word "edit."

Bulldozers bulldoze, butlers butle و burglers burgle.

"Edit" was formed from "editor."

Sometimes these back-formations sound a little silly:

ڕێگایەکیتری درووستکردنی وشەی ئینگلیزی

وەرگرتنی پیتەکانی سەرەتای شتێکە و داتاشینیان بەیەکەوە.

Bulldozers bulldoze, butlers butle and burglers burgle.

Space AdministrationوNational Aeronautics دەبێت بە NASA.

(Laughter)

بەدڵنیایەوە دەتوانیت لەگەڵ هەر شتێکیتردا ئەوە بکەی OMG

Another way to make words in English

is to take the first letters of something and squish them together.

کێشە نابێت گەر وشەکانیش گەمژانە بن.

So National Aeronautics and Space Administration becomes NASA.

And of course you can do this with anything, OMG!

بەڕاستی دەکرێ ببن بە وشەی باشی ئینگلیزی.

So it doesn't matter how silly the words are.

"Absquatulate" وشەیەکی تەواوی باشی ئینگلیزیە.

"Mugwump"وشەیەکی تەواوی باشی ئینگلیزیە.

They can be really good words of English.

پێویست ناکات وتەکان دەنگیان ئاسایی بێت، دەکرێ دەنگیان گەمژانە بێت.

"Absquatulate" is a perfectly good word of English.

لەبەرچی پێویستە وشە درووستکەیت؟

"Mugwump" is a perfectly good word of English.

پێویستە وشە دروستبکەی لەبەر ئەوەی هەموو وشەیەک

So the words don't have have to sound normal, they can sound really silly.

هەلێکە کە دەتوانی لە ڕێگەیەوە بیرۆکەکەت و ماناکەی دەرببڕی.

Why should you make words?

وشە تازەکان سەرنجی خەڵك ڕادەکێشن.

You should make words because every word

وا لەخەڵك دەکەن تیشك بخاتە سەر ئەوەی تۆ چی دەڵێیت

is a chance to express your idea and get your meaning across.

ئەوە هەلێکی باشترت پێدەدات بۆبەدەست هێنانی ماناکەی سەری.

And new words grab people's attention.

زۆربەی خەڵك لەسەر ئەم سەکۆیەی ئەمڕۆ دەیانوت،

They get people to focus on what you're saying

"لە داهاتوودا،دەتوانی ئەمە بکەی،

دەتوانی لەگەڵ ئەمە یارمەتیدەر بی، یارمەتیماندەی لە گەڕان،و لە داهێنان."

and that gives you a better chance to get your meaning across.

ئێستا دەتوانی وشەیەکی نوێ دروستکەی

A lot of people on this stage today have said,

ئینگلیزی تەمەنێکی سنوورکراوی نیە.

"In the future, you can do this,

بەردەوامبە،ئەمڕۆ دەست بە دروستکردنی وشە بکە،

you can help with this, you can help us explore, you can help us invent."

بیاننێرن بۆ من، و منیش لەسەر هێڵی فەرهەنگەکەم دایدەنێم ."Wordnik"

You can make a new word right now.

English has no age limit.
