I'm a lexicographer.

من فەرهەنگ دانەرم

I make dictionaries.

فەرهەنگەکان دروست دەکەم

And my job as a lexicographer

و کارەکەم وەکو فەرهەنگ دانەرێک

is to try to put all the words possible into the dictionary.

My job is not to decide what a word is; that is your job.

Everybody who speaks English decides together

هەموو ئەوانەی بە ئینگلیزی قسە دەکەن بڕیار لەسەر ئەوە دەدەن

what's a word and what's not a word.

کە چی وشەیە و چی وشە نییە.

Every language is just a group of people who agree to understand each other.

هەموو زمانێک لە گرووپێک خەڵک پێکهاتووە کە ڕازین لە یەکتر تێ بگەن.

Now, sometimes when people are trying to decide whether a word is good or bad,

ئێستا، هەندێک کات خەڵک هەوڵ دەدەن بڕیار بدەن کە ئایا وشەکە خراپە یان باش،

they don't really have a good reason.

لە ڕاستیدا هیچ هۆکارێکی باشیان نییە.

So they say something like, "Because grammar!"

ئەوان هەندێک شت دەڵێن وەکو، "لەبەر ڕێزمان!"

I don't actually really care about grammar too much -- don't tell anybody.

--لە ڕاستیدا من زۆر گرنگی بە ڕێزمان نادەم ئەوە بە کەس مەڵێ.

But the word "grammar," actually, there are two kinds of grammar.

بەڵام لە ڕاستیدا وشەی "ڕێزمان"، دوو جۆر ڕێزمان هەیە.

There's the kind of grammar that lives inside your brain,

جۆرێک لە ڕێزمان ئەوەیە کە لەرناو مێشکتدا بوونی هەیە.

and if you're a native speaker of a language

و ئەگەر تۆ قسەکەری ڕەسەنی زمانێک بیت

or a good speaker of a language,

یان قسەکەرێکی باش بیت لە زمانێک،

it's the unconscious rules that you follow when you speak that language.

ئەمە یاسا هەست پێنەکراوەکانن تۆ پەیڕەویان دەکەیت کاتێک بەو زمانە قسە دەکەی.

And this is what you learn when you learn a language as a child.

و ئەوەیە کە تۆ فێری دەبیت کاتێک بە منداڵی فێری زمانێک دەبیت.

And here's an example:

This is a wug, right?

ئەمە بەچکەیەکە، وایە ؟

It's a wug.

Now there is another one.

ئێستا دانەیەکیتریش هەیە.

There are two of these.

دوو دانە لەوەی لێیە.

There are two ...

That rule lives in your brain.

ئەو یاسایە لەناو مێشکتاندا دەژی

You never had to be taught this rule, you just understand it.

تۆ هەرگیز فێری ئەم ئاسایە نەکراوی، تەنها لێی تێدەگەی.

This is an experiment that was invented by a professor at [Boston University]

ئەمە تاقیکردنەوەیەکە لەلایەن پڕۆفیسۆرێکەوە داهێندراوە لە [زانکۆی بۆستن]

named Jean Berko Gleason back in 1958.

So we've been talking about this for a long time.

ئێمە ماوەیەکی درێژە لەسەر ئەمە قسە دەکەین.

Now, these kinds of natural rules that exist in your brain,

ئێستا، ئەو جۆرانەی کە یاسای سرووشتین لە مێشکتاندا بوونی هەیە،

they're not like traffic laws, they're more like laws of nature.

ئەوان یاساکانی ترافیک نین، زیاتر وەکو یاساکانی سروشن.

And nobody has to remind you to obey a law of nature, right?

و هیچ کەسێک بیرت ناخاتەوە بۆ گوێڕایەڵی کردنی یاسای سرووشتی، ڕاستە؟

When you leave the house in the morning, your mom doesn't say,

کاتێک لە بەیانیاندا ماڵەوە جێ دەهێڵیت، دایکت ناڵێت،

"Hey, honey, I think it's going to be cold, take a hoodie,

هێی، ئازیزم، پێموایە سارد دەبێت، بلوزەکەت" ببە،

don't forget to obey the law of gravity."

لە بیری نەکەیت کە گوێڕایەڵی یاسای زەمین کێشی بیت."

Nobody says this.

کەس ئەوە ناڵێت.

Now, there are other rules that are more about manners than they are about nature.

ئێستا، چەند یاسایەکیترمان هەیە زیاتر دەربارەی شێوەیە نەک سرووشت.

So you can think of a word as like a hat.

تۆ دەتوانیت بیر لە وشەی کڵاو بکەیتەوە.

Once you know how hats work,

هەرتاکێکتان دەزانن کڵاو چۆن کار دەکات،

nobody has to tell you, "Don't wear hats on your feet."

پێویست ناکات هیچ کەسێک ئەوەت پێ بڵێ، کڵاو لەبەرلاقەکانت مەکە"

What they have to tell you is, "Can you wear hats inside?

ئەوەی پێویستە پێتی بڵێن ئەوەیە، دەتوانیت لە ژوورەوە کڵاو لەبەر بکەیت؟"

Who gets to wear a hat?

کێ کڵاو لەبەر دەکات؟

What are the kinds of hats you get to wear?"

جۆری ئەو کڵاوانە چیە کە تۆ لەبەری دەکەی؟"

Those are more of the second kind of grammar,

ئەمانە زیاتر جۆری دووەمی ڕێزمانن،

which linguists often call usage, as opposed to grammar.

کە ئەمە لای زمانزانەکان پێی دەوترێت بەکارهێنان، بە بەراورد بە ڕێزمان.

Now, sometimes people use this kind of rules-based grammar

ئێستا، هەندێ کات خەڵك ئەم جۆرە یاسا بنچینەیەی ڕێزمان بەکار دەهێنن.

to discourage people from making up words.

بۆ وەستاندنی خاڵك لە دروست کردنی وشە.

And I think that is, well, stupid.

و من پێموایە، باشە، گەمژانەیە.

So, for example, people are always telling you,

بۆ نموونە، هەمیشە خەڵك پێت دەڵێن،

"Be creative, make new music, do art, invent things, science and technology."

درووستکەربە، موزیکی نوێ درووست بکە" وێنە بکێشە، داهێنانکە، زانست و تەکنەلۆژیا."

But when it comes to words, they're like,

بەڵام کاتێك دێتە سەر وشە، ئەوان وەکو ئەوەن

"Don't! No. Creativity stops right here, whippersnappers. Give it a rest."

وامەکە! نەخێر. ئەو کاتە داهێنان دەوەستێت"، هیچوپوچی فشەکەر، کەمێك پشوی پێ بدە."

But that makes no sense to me.

بەڵام هیچ مانایەکی نییە بۆ من.

Words are great. We should have more of them.

وشەکان زۆر باشن. پێویستە زیاترمان هەبێت.

I want you to make as many new words as possible.

دەمەوێت چەندی پێتان دەکرێت وشە درووست بکەن.

And I'm going to tell you six ways that you can use to make new words in English.

من شەش ڕێگەتان پێ دەڵێم کاریبهێنن بۆ دروست کردنی وشەی نوێ لە ئینگلیزیدا

The first way is the simplest way.

یەکەم ڕێگە سادەترین ڕێگەیە.

Basically, steal them from other languages.

بە زۆری، لە زمانیترەوە دزراوە.

["Go rob other people"] (Laughter)

["بڕۆن لە خەڵکیتری بستێنن"] (پێکەنین)

Linguists call this borrowing,

زمانزانەکان بە قەرز کردن ناوی دەبەن،

but we never give the words back , so I'm just going to be honest

بەڵام هەرگیز وشەکانمان نەگەڕاندۆتەوە، بۆیە من ڕاستگۆ دەبم

and call it stealing.

و بە دزین ناوی دەبەم.

We usually take words for things that we like, like delicious food.

هەمیشە وشەکان لەو شتانەوە وەردەگرین حەزمان لێیە، وەکو خواردنی بەتام.

We took "kumquat" from Chinese, we took "caramel" from French.

مان لە چینیەوە وەرگرتوە،"kumquat" مان لە فەرەنسیەوە وەرگرتووە"caramel"

We also take words for cool things like "ninja," right?

هەروەها وشەکانمان بۆ شتە خۆشەکان ڕاستە؟ "ninja,"وەرگرتووە وەک

We took that from Japanese,

ئەوەمان لە یاباننی وەرگرتووە،

which is kind of a cool trick because ninjas are hard to steal from.

جۆرە فێڵێکی باش بوو چونکە دزیکردن لە نینجا قورسە.

(Laughter)

So another way that you can make words in English

ڕێگەیەکیتر بۆ درووست کردنی وشەکان لە ئینگلیزیدا

is by squishing two other English words together.

ئەوەیە کە بە داتاشینی دوو وشەیتری ئینگلیزی بەیەکەوە،

This is called compounding.

ئەمە بە تێکەڵە ناو دەبرێت.

Words in English are like Lego:

وشەی لە ئینگلیزیدا وەک ە Lego:

If you use enough force, you can put any two of them together.

ئەگەر هێزی تەواو بەکار بهێنیت، دەتوانی هەر کام لەو دوانە بەیەکەوە دانێی.

(Laughter)

We do this all the time in English:

هەموو کات لە ئینگلیزیدا ئاوا دەکەین:

Words like "heartbroken," "bookworm," "sandcastle" all are compounds.

"bookworm,""heartbroken,"وتەی وەکو هەموویان تێکەڵەن"sandcastle"

So go ahead and make words like "duckface," just don't make duckface.

درووست بکە"duckface,"بەردەوامبە وتەی وەک بەس دەموچاوت مەکە بە هی مراوی.

Another way that you can make words in English is kind of like compounding,

ڕێگەیەکیتر بۆ درووستکردنی وتە لە ئینگلیزی دا جۆرێکە هەروەکو تێکەڵەیە،

but instead you use so much force when you squish the words together

بەڵام لەبری بەکار هێنانی هێزی زۆر ئەوکاتەی تۆ وتەکانت بەیەکەوە داتاشیوە

that some parts fall off.

هەندێک بەشیان لێ دەبێتەوە.

So these are blend words,

ئەمانە وتەی تێکەڵ کراون،

like "brunch" is a blend of "breakfast" and "lunch."

تێکەڵکراوی "brunch"وەک ە "lunch"و "breakfast".

"Motel" is a blend of "motor" and "hotel."

تێکەڵکراوی "motel" ە "hotel"و "motor".

Who here knew that "motel" was a blend word?

"motel"لێرە کێ دەیزانی کە وتەیەکی تێکەڵکراوە؟

Yeah, that word is so old in English

بەڵێ، ئەوە وتەیەکی زۆر کۆنی ئینگلیزیە

that lots of people don't know that there are parts missing.

زۆر خەڵک نازانن کە بەشەکانیتری نادیارن.

"Edutainment" is a blend of "education" and "entertainment."

تێکەڵکراوی "Edutainment" ە"entertsinment"و"education".

And of course, "electrocute" is a blend of "electric" and "execute."

تێکەڵکراوی"electrocute"،بەدڵنیایەوە ە"execute"و"electric".

You can also make words by changing how they operate.

هەروەها دەتوانی وتە درووستبکەیت بە گۆڕینی کە ئەوان چۆن کار دەکەن.

This is called functional shift.

پێی دەوترێ لادانی فرمانی چالاک.

You take a word that acts as one part of speech,

وتەیەک وەردەگری نواندن دەکات وەک بەشێکی ئاخافتن

and you change it into another part of speech.

و تۆ دەیگۆڕیت بۆ بەشێکیتری ئاخافتن.

Okay, who here knew that "friend" hasn't always been a verb?

"friend"باشە، کێ لێرە دەیزانی هەمیشە نابێت بە کار؟

"Friend" used to be noun and then we verbed it.

وا هاتبوو ناو بێت"friend" و دواتر کردمان بە کار.

Almost any word in English can be verbed.

نزیکەی هەر وشێک لە ئینگلیزیدا دەتوانرێ ببێت بە کار.

You can also take adjectives and make them into nouns.

هەروەها دەتوانیت هاوەڵناوەکان ببەیت و بیانکەی بە ناو.

"Commercial" used to be an adjective and now it's a noun.

واهاتوە هاوەڵناو بێت"Commerical" ئێستا کراوە بە ناو.

And of course, you can "green" things.

بە دڵنیایەوە، دەتوانی شتەکان بکەی ."green"بە

Another way to make words in English is back-formation.

ڕێگایەکیتری درووستکردنی وتە لە ئینگلیزیدا چاوگە.

You can take a word and you can kind of squish it down a little bit.

دەتوانیت وشەیەک وەرگریت و کەمێکی لێ داتاشیت.

So for example, in English we had the word "editor" before we had the word "edit."

مان "editor"بۆ نموونە، لە ئینگلیزیدا وشەی مان هەبێت"edit"هەبوو پێش ئەوەی وشەی

"Edit" was formed from "editor."

فۆڕمێکی وەرگیراوە لە "edit" ."editor"

Sometimes these back-formations sound a little silly:

هەندێک کات ئەو چاوگانە دەنگیان کەمێک گەمژانەیە:

Bulldozers bulldoze, butlers butle and burglers burgle.

Bulldozers bulldoze, butlers butle و burglers burgle.

Another way to make words in English

ڕێگایەکیتری درووستکردنی وتەی ئینگلیزی

is to take the first letters of something and squish them together.

وەرگرتنی پیتەکانی سەرەتای شتێکە و داتاشینیان بەیەکەوە.

So National Aeronautics and Space Administration becomes NASA.

Space AdministrationوNational Aeronautics .NASAدەبێت بە

And of course you can do this with anything, OMG!

بەدڵنیایەوە دەتوانیت لەگەڵ هەر شتێکیتردا !OMG،ئەوە بکەی

So it doesn't matter how silly the words are.

کێشە نابێت گەر وتەکانیش گەمژانە بن.

They can be really good words of English.

بەڕاستی دەکرێ ببن بە وتەی باشی ئینگلیزی.

"Absquatulate" is a perfectly good word of English.

وتەیەکی تەواوی "Absquatulate" باشی ئینگلیزیە.

"Mugwump" is a perfectly good word of English.

وتەیەکی تەواوی باشی"Mugwump" ئینگلیزیە.

So the words don't have have to sound normal, they can sound really silly.

،پێویست ناکات وتەکان دەنگیان ئاسایی بێت دەکرێ دەنگیان گەمژانە بێت.

Why should you make words?

لەبەرچی پێویستە وتە درووستکەیت؟

You should make words because every word

پێویستە وتە دروستبکەی لەبەر ئەوەی هەموو وشەیەک

is a chance to express your idea and get your meaning across.

هەلێکە کە دەتوانی لە ڕێگەیەوە بیرۆکەکەت و ماناکەی دەرببڕی.

And new words grab people's attention.

وتە تازەکان سەرنجی خەڵك ڕادەکێشن.

They get people to focus on what you're saying

وا لەخەڵك دەکەن تیشك بخاتە سەر ئەوەی تۆ چی دەڵێیت

and that gives you a better chance to get your meaning across.

ئەوە هەلێکی باشترت پێدەدات بۆبەدەست هێنانی ماناکەی سەری.

A lot of people on this stage today have said,

زۆربەی خەڵك لەسەر ئەم سەکۆیەی ئەمڕۆ دەیانوت،

"In the future, you can do this,

لە داهاتوودا،دەتوانی ئەمە بکەی"

you can help with this, you can help us explore, you can help us invent."

دەتوانی لەگەڵ ئەمە یارمەتیدەر بی، ."یەرمەتیماندەی لە گەڕان،و لە داهێنان

You can make a new word right now.

ئێستا دەتوانی وتەیەکی نوێ دروستکەی

English has no age limit.

ئینگلیزی تەمەنێکی سنوورکراوی نیە.

Go ahead, start making words today,

بەردەوامبە،ئەمڕۆ دەست بە دروستکردنی وتە بکە،
