I'm a lexicographer.

I make dictionaries.

And my job as a lexicographer

is to try to put all the words possible into the dictionary.

My job is not to decide what a word is; that is your job.

Everybody who speaks English decides together

همه کسانی که انگلیسی صحبت می کنند؛ با هم تصمیم می گیرند

what's a word and what's not a word.

که چه چیزی کلمه است و چه چیزی نیست.

Every language is just a group of people who agree to understand each other.

در اصل هر زبان گروهی از افراد است که برای فهم یکدیگر به توافق رسیده اند.

Now, sometimes when people are trying to decide whether a word is good or bad,

وقتی میخوان تصمیم بگیرند که یک کلمه خوب یا بد است،

they don't really have a good reason.

در اصل دلیل قاطعی ندارند.

So they say something like, "Because grammar!"

برای همین یه وقتها فقط میگن: "چون دستور زبان اینه!"

I don't actually really care about grammar too much -- don't tell anybody.

واقعیتش دستور زبان زیاد برام مهم نیست -- به کسی نگید.

But the word "grammar," actually, there are two kinds of grammar.

اما در حقیقت دو نوع دستور زبان داریم.

There's the kind of grammar that lives inside your brain,

نوعی دستور زبان که درونِ ذهنِ ماست،

and if you're a native speaker of a language

که اگه زبانی، زبان بومی شما باشه

or a good speaker of a language,

یا به زبانی خوب صحبت کنید،

it's the unconscious rules that you follow when you speak that language.

این همان قوانین ناخودآگاه ی هستند که در حین صحبت رعایت می کنید.

And this is what you learn when you learn a language as a child.

این همان چیزی است که شخص از همان کودکی یاد میگیره.

And here's an example:

یک مثال:

This is a wug, right?

این یک واگ است.

It's a wug.

این یه واگه.

Now there is another one.

حالا یک واگ دیگه.

There are two of these.

دوتا واگ داریم.

There are two ...

آنها دو واگ.....

Audience: Wugs.

حضار: "هستند".

Erin McKean: Exactly! You know how to make the plural of wug.

That rule lives in your brain.

این قانون در ذهن شما است.

You never had to be taught this rule, you just understand it.

اصلا نیازی نیست کسی بهتون یاد بده. همینجوری متوجه میشید.

This is an experiment that was invented by a professor at [Boston University]

این تحقیقی است که سال ۱۹۵۸ یکی از اساتید دانشگاه بوستون

named Jean Berko Gleason back in 1958.

به نام جیم برکو گلیسن ابداع کرد.

So we've been talking about this for a long time.

در این مورد بحث زیاد شده است.

Now, these kinds of natural rules that exist in your brain,

این قوانین که به طور طبیعی در ذهن شما هستند

they're not like traffic laws, they're more like laws of nature.

شبیه به قوانین رانندگی نیست، بلکه بیشتر شبیه قوانین طبیعته.

And nobody has to remind you to obey a law of nature, right?

When you leave the house in the morning, your mom doesn't say,

"Hey, honey, I think it's going to be cold, take a hoodie,

don't forget to obey the law of gravity."

Nobody says this.

هیچ کس اینو نمیگه.

Now, there are other rules that are more about manners than they are about nature.

یه سری قوانین دیگه هست که بشتر تحت رفتار هستند تا طبیعت.

So you can think of a word as like a hat.

برای همین می تونید به کلمه ای مثل کلاه فکر کنید

Once you know how hats work,

چون کاربرد کلاه رو می دونید

nobody has to tell you, "Don't wear hats on your feet."

نیازی نیست که کسی بهتون بگه "کلاه رو پات نکن"

What they have to tell you is, "Can you wear hats inside?

چیزی که گاهی بهتون میگن اینه "میشه اینجا هم کلاه داشت؟"

Who gets to wear a hat?

چه کسانی کلاه میذارن؟

What are the kinds of hats you get to wear?"

چه نوع کلاه هایی رو سر میکنی؟

Those are more of the second kind of grammar,

اینها نمونه دوم از کاربرد دستور زبان هستن

which linguists often call usage, as opposed to grammar.

که زبانشناسان در برابر کلمه دستور زبان معمولا میگن" کاربرد کلمه".

Now, sometimes people use this kind of rules-based grammar

یه وقتها بعضی ها با این قوانین دستور زبان

to discourage people from making up words.

مردم رو از ساخت لغات جدید می ترسونن.

And I think that is, well, stupid.

به نظر من این خیلی احمقانه است.

So, for example, people are always telling you,

مثلا مدام می شنوید که دیگران میگن

"Be creative, make new music, do art, invent things, science and technology."

"خلاق باش. آهنگ جدید بساز، هنر جدید، یه چیز جدید خلق کن، علم، فناوری"

But when it comes to words, they're like,

ولی وقتی پای کلمه میاد وسط میگن

"Don't! No. Creativity stops right here, whippersnappers. Give it a rest."

"بسه دیگه. زیاد خلاقیت خرج نکن. نابغه! یه استراحتی به مغزت بده."

But that makes no sense to me.

اصلا نمی فهمم یعنی چی.

Words are great. We should have more of them.

کلمات شگفت انگیز هستن. باید کلی کلمه داشته باشیم.

I want you to make as many new words as possible.

ازتون میخوام هر چقدر میتوند کلمه جدید بسازید.

And I'm going to tell you six ways that you can use to make new words in English.

میخوام بهتون شش روش ساخت کلمه جدید در انگلیسی رو یاد بدم.

The first way is the simplest way.

روش اول ،راحت ترین راهه.

Basically, steal them from other languages.

خیلی راحت از زبانهای دیگه بدزدید.

["Go rob other people"] (Laughter)

Linguists call this borrowing,

زبانشناسان به این میگن "قرض گرفتن"

but we never give the words back , so I'm just going to be honest

ولی هیج وقت کلمه رو پس نمیدیم پس ،رک بگم

and call it stealing.

این دزدیه.

We usually take words for things that we like, like delicious food.

معمولا کلمه هایی رو می دزدیم که دوست داریم مثلا یه غذای خوشمزه.

We took "kumquat" from Chinese, we took "caramel" from French.

"کامکوات" از چین. یا "کارامل"از فرانسه.

We also take words for cool things like "ninja," right?

یا مثل نینجا برای دزدی در در موارد جالب.

We took that from Japanese,

خود کلمه "نینجا" ژاپنی است.

which is kind of a cool trick because ninjas are hard to steal from.

کلمه جالبی است چون معمولا از نینجاها نمیشه دزدی کرد

So another way that you can make words in English

راه دوم برای ساختن کلمه در انگلیسی

is by squishing two other English words together.

به هم چسبوندن دو کلمه با همدیگه است.

This is called compounding.

بهش میگن" ترکیب".

Words in English are like Lego:

کلمات در انگلیسی شبیه لگو هستن:

If you use enough force, you can put any two of them together.

یه کم فشار بهشون بیارید، می تونید بهم بچسبونیدشون.

(Laughter)

We do this all the time in English:

این کار رو مدام انجام میدیم:

Words like "heartbroken," "bookworm," "sandcastle" all are compounds.

کلماتی مثل "heartbroken"، "bookworm" "sandcastle" همه ترکیبی هستن.

So go ahead and make words like "duckface," just don't make duckface.

پس کلمات ترکیبی بسازید.. مثل Duckface منتها شکلش نشید.

Another way that you can make words in English is kind of like compounding,

روش سوم شبیه همون ترکیبه.

but instead you use so much force when you squish the words together

وقتی برای چسبوندن کلمه ها زیاد زور بزنید،

that some parts fall off.

یه مقدارش میریزه.

So these are blend words,

به اینا میگن کلمات "تلفیقی"

like "brunch" is a blend of "breakfast" and "lunch."

مثل "brunch" که از تلفیق "breakfast" با "lunch" درست شده

"Motel" is a blend of "motor" and "hotel."

یا "Motel" از تلفیق "motor" با " hotel"

Who here knew that "motel" was a blend word?

اینجا کیا می دونستن که motel یه کلمه تلفیق شده است؟

Yeah, that word is so old in English

این کلمه ها اونقدر قدمتشون زیاده

that lots of people don't know that there are parts missing.

که اکثرا افراد نمی دونن اصلش چی بوده.

"Edutainment" is a blend of "education" and "entertainment."

کلمه "Edutainment" تلفیق " Education" با " Entertaiment" است.

And of course, "electrocute" is a blend of "electric" and "execute."

و البته "Electrocute" تلفیق "electric" با "execute"

You can also make words by changing how they operate.

روش چهارم ساخت کلمه تغییر نقش کلمه است.

This is called functional shift.

به این روش میگن" تغییر ساختار"

You take a word that acts as one part of speech,

یه کلمه با یه بخش دستوری خاص را بردارید

and you change it into another part of speech.

تبدیلش کنید به یه بخش دستوری دیگه.

Okay, who here knew that "friend" hasn't always been a verb?

کیا اینجا می دونن "friend" فقط فعل نیست؟

"Friend" used to be noun and then we verbed it.

"Friend"اولش اسم بوده بعدا ما فعلش کردیم.

Almost any word in English can be verbed.

تقریبا همه کلمات رو در انگلیسی میشه فعل کرد.

You can also take adjectives and make them into nouns.

حتی می تونید یه صفت رو به اسم تبدیل کنید.

"Commercial" used to be an adjective and now it's a noun.

کلمه"Commercial" اولش صفت بود ولی الان یک اسمه.

And of course, you can "green" things.

میشه "سبزی کاری " هم کرد!...

Another way to make words in English is back-formation.

روش پنجم ، سر و ته کلمه رو زدنه..

You can take a word and you can kind of squish it down a little bit.

یه کلمه رو بردارید و کمی سر و تهش رو بزنید.

So for example, in English we had the word "editor" before we had the word "edit."

مثلا قبل از اینکه "Edit" داشته باشیم کلمه "Editor" رو داشتیم.

"Edit" was formed from "editor."

"Edit" از "Editor" گرفته شده.

Sometimes these back-formations sound a little silly:

یه وقتها خیلی مسخره میشه، مثلا

Bulldozers bulldoze, butlers butle and burglers burgle.

Bulldozers bulldoze یا butlers butle و burglers burgle.

Another way to make words in English

روش ششم، برای ساخت کلمه

is to take the first letters of something and squish them together.

گرفتن کلمات اول جمله و چسبوندن آنها به هم دیگه است.

So National Aeronautics and Space Administration becomes NASA.

مثلا National Aeronautics and Space Administration میشه NASA.

And of course you can do this with anything, OMG!

با هر چیزی میشه اینکار رو کرد. مثلا OMG!

So it doesn't matter how silly the words are.

اصلا مهم نیست اگه کلملت مسخره به نظر بیان

They can be really good words of English.

اینها می تونن کلمه های خوبی بشن.

"Absquatulate" is a perfectly good word of English.

کلمه "Absquatulate" یکی از اون کلملت محشره.

"Mugwump" is a perfectly good word of English.

یا کلمه "Mugwump"

So the words don't have have to sound normal, they can sound really silly.

مهم نیست کلمه ها خیلی عادی به نظر بیان. می تونه احمقانه باشه.

Why should you make words?

چرا باید اینکار رو بکنید؟

You should make words because every word

باید کلمه های جدید بسازید چرا که

is a chance to express your idea and get your meaning across.

هر کلمه فرصتی است برای ابراز عقاید و انتقال مفاهیم.

And new words grab people's attention.

کلمه های جدید توجه افراد رو جلب میکنن.

They get people to focus on what you're saying

باعث میشه افراد روی حرف شما تمرکز کنن.

and that gives you a better chance to get your meaning across.

و فرصتی رو فراهم میکنه تا منظورتون رو بهتر انتقال بدبد.

A lot of people on this stage today have said,

خیلی ها در این مورد میگن

"In the future, you can do this,

"این در آینده اتفاق می افته،

you can help with this, you can help us explore, you can help us invent."

شما فقط می تونید به ما در تحقیق و ابداع کمک کنید."

You can make a new word right now.

ولی از همین الان میشه اینکارو کرد.

English has no age limit.

زبان سن و سال و زمان نمی شناسه.

Go ahead, start making words today,
