As a child, I would hate being made

ကလေးတစ်ယောက်အနေနဲ့ အိန္ဒိယ Kurta အင်္ကျီရှည်ကို

to wear the Indian kurta pajama,

ဝတ်ခိုင်းတာကို အရမ်းမုန်းမိမှာပါ။

because I didn't think it was very cool.

It felt a bit girly to me, like a dress,

My dad never wore it,

so I didn't see why I had to.

Also, it makes me feel a bit uncomfortable,

that people assume I represent something

because that's not how I feel.

So my artwork is about identity and language,

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်တော့ရဲ့ လက်ရာက ကိုယ်ပိုင် လက္ခဏာနဲ့ ဘာသာစကား အကြောင်းပါ။

challenging common assumptions

ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဘယ်ပုံပေါက်တယ်၊ ဘယ်ကလာတယ်၊

based on how we look like or where we come from,

လိင်၊ လူမျိုး၊ အတန်းအစား တွေကို အခြေခံတဲ့ ထင်မြင်ချက်​ေတွကို

gender, race, class.

စိမ်ခေါ်လိုက်ခြင်းပါ။

What makes us who we are anyway?

ဒါနဲ့ ဘာက ကျွန်တော်တို့ကို ဖြစ်အောင်လုပ်လိုက်တာလဲ။

HP: (In Chinese)

YR: I used to read Spider-Man comics,

YR Spider-Man ရုပ်ပြတွေ ဖတ်ခဲ့ဖူးတယ်။

watch kung fu movies,

ကွန်ဖူးကားတွေ ကြည့်ခဲ့ဖူးတယ်။

take philosophy lessons from Bruce Lee.

He would say things like --

HP: Empty your mind.

Put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot.

Now, water can flow

or it can crash.

ဒါမှမဟုတ် တွန်းထိုးနိုင်တယ်။

YR: This year, I am 32 years old,

I have been wondering recently,

what advice he would give me

but I still think that we learn who we are

by copying others.

Who here hasn't imitated their childhood hero

ဒီမှာရှိတဲ့ ဘယ်သူတွေက ကစားကွင်းထဲက သူတို့ကလေးဘဝ ဇာတ်လိုက် (သို့)

in the playground, or mum or father?

အမေ၊ အဖေတွေကို မတုပဖူးဘူးလဲ၊

I have.

ကျွန်တော်တော့ တုပခဲ့တယ်။

HP: A few years ago, in order to make this video

နှစ်အနည်းငယ်က ဒီ ကျွန်တော့ လက်ရာကို

for my artwork, I shaved off all my hair

ဗီဒီယိုရိုက်ဖို့အတွက် ၁၉၆၀ နှစ်တွေက

so that I could grow it back as my father had it

အိန္ဒိယကနေ U.K ပြောင်းလာတုန်းက

when he first emigrated from India

အဖေ့လို ဆံပင် ပြန်မွေးလို့ရအောင်

to the U.K. in the 1960s.

ကျွန်တော် ကတုံးရိတ်လိုက်တယ်။

He had a side parting and a neat mustache.

သူက ဆံပင်ဘေးခွဲနဲ့ တိရိတဲ့ နှုတ်ခမ်းမွှေးရှိခဲ့တယ်။

At first, it was going very well.

ပထမတော့ ဒါက အဆင်ကိုပြေလို့။

I even started to get discounts in Indian shops.

အိန္ဒိယဆိုင်တွေမှာဆို လျှော့စျေးနဲ့ တောင် ရခဲ့သေးတယ်။

But then very quickly,

ဒါပေမဲ့ နောက်တော့ အမြန်ကြီးပါပဲ၊

I started to underestimate

my mustache growing ability,

လျှော့တွက်လာမိတော့

and it got way too big.

အရမ်းကြီးးရှည်သွားတယ်။

It didn't look Indian anymore.

အိန္ဒိယပုံ မပေါက်တော့ဘူး။

Instead, people from across the road,

အဲဒါအစား မျက်နှာချင်းဆိုင်လမ်းက

they would shout things like --

လူတွေဆို ဒီလိုမျိုးတွေပြောတယ်၊

HP and YR: Arriba! Arriba! Ándale! Ándale!

HP & YR လာပြီ၊ လာပြီ၊ သွား၊ သွား။

HP: Actually, I don't know why I am even talking like this.

HP တကယ်တော့ ဘာလို့ ဒီလို ပြောနေမှန်းတောင် မသိဘူး။

My dad doesn't even have an Indian accent anymore.

အဖေဆို အိန္ဒိယလေသံတောင် မပေါက်တော့ဘူး။

He talks like this now.

အခု သူဒီလို ပြောတယ်။

So it's not just my father that I've imitated.

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်တော် တုပတာ ကျွန်တော့ အဖေပဲ မဟုတ်ဘူး။

A few years ago I went to China for a few months,

နှစ်အနည်းငယ်က တရုတ်ပြည်ကို လအတန်ကြာ သွားခဲ့တယ်၊

and I couldn't speak Chinese,

တရုတ်စကား မပြောတတ်ခဲ့တော့

and this frustrated me,

ခံပြင်းမိတယ်၊

so I wrote about this and had it translated

ဒါနဲ့ ဒီအကြောင်းရေးပြီး တရုတ်လို ဘာသာပြန်

into Chinese, and then I learned this by heart,

ပြီးတော့ ဒါကို အလွတ်ကျက်လိုက်တယ်၊

like music, I guess.

သီချင်းကျက်သလိုမျိုး လို့ထင်တယ်။

YR: This phrase is now etched into my mind

YR ဒီစကားစုက အခုတော့ ဘဏ်ကဒ်ပြားက ပင်နံပါတ်ထက်

clearer than the pin number to my bank card,

ပိုပြီး ရှင်းလင်းစွာ စိတ်ထဲမှာ စူးဝင်ပုံဖော်သွားတယ်။

so I can pretend I speak Chinese fluently.

ဒီတော့ တရုတ်စကားကို ကျွမ်းကျင်စွာ ပြောတတ်တယ်လို့ ဟန်ဆောင်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

When I had learned this phrase,

ဒီစကားစုကို ကျက်တုန်းက

I had an artist over there hear me out

ဘယ်လောက် မှန်မှန် အသံထွက်လဲဆိုတာ သိအောင်

to see how accurate it sounded.

ပန်းပုပညာရှင်တစ်ယောက်ကို နားထောင်ခိုင်းပါတယ်။

I spoke the phrase, and then he laughed

ကျွန်တော်က စကားစုကိုပြော၊ သူက ရယ်ပြီး

and told me, "Oh yeah, that's great,

ပြောတာက " အိုး ကောင်းလိုက်တာ၊ "

only it kind of sounds like a woman."

"တစ်ခုပဲ၊ မိန်းမသံပေါက်နေတယ်ကွ။"တဲ့

I said, "What?"

"ဘာ "လို့ ကျွန်တော်ပြောတော့

He said, "Yeah, you learned from a woman?"

သူက "ဟုတ်တယ်၊ မိန်းမတစ်ယောက်ဆီက သင်ထားတာလား "တဲ့။

I said, "Yes. So?"

ကျွန်တော်က " အင်း ဒီတော့၊"

He then explained the tonal differences

ဒီမှာပဲ ကျား နဲ့ မ အသံပိုင်း ကွာခြားချက်တွေဟာ

between male and female voices

အရမ်းခြာနားပြီး၊ သိသာတယ်ဆိုတာ

are very different and distinct, and that I had learned it very well,

သူရှင်းပြတယ်။ ကျွန်တော် သင်ယူတာ အရမ်းကောင်းတယ်၊

but in a woman's voice.

ဒါပေမဲ့ မိန်းမ အသံနဲ့တဲ့။

HP: Okay. So this imitation business

ကောင်းပြီ၊ ဒီတော့ တုပခြင်း အလုပ်ဟာ

does come with risk.

စွန့်စားမှုပါတယ်။

It doesn't always go as you plan it,

ကိုယ် စီစဉ်သလို အမြဲ မဖြစ်ဘူးလေ၊

even with a talented translator.

အရမ်းတော်တဲ့ ဘာသာပြန်သူတောင်မှပဲလေ။

But I am going to stick with it,

ဒါပေမဲ ဒါကို စွဲမြဲထားမှာပါ၊

because contrary to what we might usually assume,

အကြောင်းက ကျွန်တော်တို့ ထင်မြင်မိနိုင်တာတွေနဲ့ သွေဖီပြီး

imitating somebody can reveal something unique.

တစ်ယောက်ယောက်ကို တုပခြင်းဟာ ထူးခြားမှုတစ်ခုခုကို လှစ်ဟပြနိုင်ပါတယ်။

So every time I fail

ဒီတော့ အဖေ့လိုမျိုး

to become more like my father,

ပိုဖြစ်လာဖို့ ကျရှုံးတဲ့ အကြိမ်တိုင်း

I become more like myself.

ကျွန်တော့ကိုယ် ကျွန်တော် ဆိုတာမျိုး ပိုဖြစ်လာပါတယ်။

Every time I fail to become Bruce Lee,

Bruce Lee လိုဖြစ်ဖို့ ကျရှုံးချိန်တိုင်း

I become more authentically me.

ကိုယ့် အစစ်အမှန် ပိုဖြစ်လာပါတယ်။

This is my art.

ဒါက ကျွန်တော့ အနုပညာပါ၊

I strive for authenticity,

အစစ်အမှန်ဖြစ်ဖို့ အားထုတ်ပါတယ်၊

even if it comes in a shape

ဒါဟာ ကျွန်တော်တို့ မမျှော်လင့်နိုင်လောက်တဲ့

that we might not usually expect.

ပုံစံတစ်ခုနဲ့ လာတာတောင်မှပေါ့။

It's only recently that I've started to understand

သိပ်မကြာသေးခင်ကပဲ သိလိုက်တာက

that I didn't learn to sit like this

အိန္ဒိယဖြစ်တာမို့လို့ ဒီလိုထိုင်တာကို

through being Indian.

သင်ယူခဲ့တာ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး၊

I learned this from Spider-Man.
