YR: I was born and raised near Manchester,

YR: Needless to say, I would like to apologize

युयू रौ: केहने कि ज़रूरत तो नहीं है, परंतु मैं

to any Mandarin speakers in the audience.

कोई भी मैन्डरिन बोलनेवाले से माफी माँगना चाहूँगा।

As a child, I would hate being made

जब मैं एक बच्चा था, मुझे भारतीय कुर्ता पाजामा

to wear the Indian kurta pajama,

पहनाया जाए, इससे मुझे नफरत थी

because I didn't think it was very cool.

क्यूँकि मैं यह सोचता था कि यह 'कूल' नहीं था।

It felt a bit girly to me, like a dress,

and it had this baggy trouser part

because that's not how I feel.

YR: Actually, the only way I feel comfortable

So my artwork is about identity and language,

challenging common assumptions

based on how we look like or where we come from,

gender, race, class.

What makes us who we are anyway?

YR: I used to read Spider-Man comics,

युयू रौ: मैं स्पाइडर-मॅन कॉमिक्स पढ़ा करता था,

watch kung fu movies,

कुंग-फू फिल्मे देखा करता था,

take philosophy lessons from Bruce Lee.

और ब्रूस ली से फिलॉसोफी में सबक लेता था।

He would say things like --

HP: Empty your mind.

Be formless, shapeless, like water.

निराकर बनो, पानी की तरह।

Now you put water into a cup.

It becomes the cup.

वह कप बन जाता है।

You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle.

तुम पानी को बॉटल में डालो, वह बॉटल बन जाता है।

Put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot.

उसे चायदानी में डालो, वह चायदानी बन जाता है।

Now, water can flow

अब, पानी बह सकता है

or it can crash.

या टकरा सकता है।

Be water, my friend. (Applause)

YR: This year, I am 32 years old,

युयू रौ: इस साल, मेरी उम्र ३२ वर्ष की है,

the same age Bruce Lee was when he died.

यही ब्रूस ली की उम्र थी, जब उसकी मृत्यु हुई थी।

I have been wondering recently,

मैं हाल ही में सोच रहा था,

if he were alive today,

what advice he would give me

Who here hasn't imitated their childhood hero

HP: A few years ago, in order to make this video

for my artwork, I shaved off all my hair

so that I could grow it back as my father had it

when he first emigrated from India

to the U.K. in the 1960s.

He had a side parting and a neat mustache.

At first, it was going very well.

I even started to get discounts in Indian shops.

But then very quickly,

लेकिन फिर बहुत ही जल्द,

I started to underestimate

मैं अपनी मूंछ उगाने की ताकत को

my mustache growing ability,

अनडरएस्टीमेट करने लगा,

and it got way too big.

और वह बहुत बड़ी हो गई।

It didn't look Indian anymore.

अब यह भारतीय नहीं लग रही थी।

Instead, people from across the road,

इसकी बजाय, दुनियाभर के लोग सड़क के दूसरी ओर से

they would shout things like --

ऐसी चीज़े केहते --

HP and YR: Arriba! Arriba! Ándale! Ándale!

युयू रौ और हे.प.: अररिबा! अररिबा! आंडले! आंडले!

(Laughter)

HP: Actually, I don't know why I am even talking like this.

हे.प.: दरअसल, मुझे तो यह भी नहीं पता कि मैं ऐसे क्यों बात कर रहा हूँ।

My dad doesn't even have an Indian accent anymore.

मेरे पिताजी के पास भी अब भारतीय उच्चारण नहीं रहा।

He talks like this now.

अब वह ऐसे बात करते हैं।

So it's not just my father that I've imitated.

मैने सिर्फ अपने पिताजी कि नकल नहीं उतारी है।

A few years ago I went to China for a few months,

कुछ साल पहले जब मैं कुछ महीनों के लिए चीन गया था,

and I couldn't speak Chinese,

मैं चीनी नहीं बोल सकता था,

and this frustrated me,

और यह बात मुझे सताती थी

so I wrote about this and had it translated

इसलिए मैने इसके बारे में लिखा, और इसका चीनी में अनुवाद करवाया

into Chinese, and then I learned this by heart,

और उसके बाद उसे ठीक से याद किया

like music, I guess.

YR: This phrase is now etched into my mind

clearer than the pin number to my bank card,

so I can pretend I speak Chinese fluently.

When I had learned this phrase,

I had an artist over there hear me out

to see how accurate it sounded.

I spoke the phrase, and then he laughed

and told me, "Oh yeah, that's great,

It doesn't always go as you plan it,

even with a talented translator.

But I am going to stick with it,

पर मैं नकल उतारता रहूँगा,

because contrary to what we might usually assume,

imitating somebody can reveal something unique.

किसी कि नकल उतारने से कोई अनोखी चीज़ हमारे सामने आ सकती है।

So every time I fail

इसलिये हर बार जब मैं अपने पिताजी कि तरह

to become more like my father,

बनने में असफल होता हूँ,

I become more like myself.

मैं और भी ज़्यादा खुद की तरह बन जाता हूँ।

Every time I fail to become Bruce Lee,

हर बार जब मैं ब्रूस ली की तरह बनने में नाकामयाब होता हूँ,

I become more authentically me.

मैं और भी विश्वस्त रूप से अपने जैसा बन जाता हूँ।

This is my art.

यह मेरी कला है।

I strive for authenticity,

मैं प्रमाणिकता हासिल करने का प्रयास करता हूँ,

even if it comes in a shape

चाहे यह एक अप्रत्याशित

that we might not usually expect.

आकार में ही अपने आप को पेश क्यों ना करे।

It's only recently that I've started to understand

मैने हाल ही में यह समझना शुरू किया है

that I didn't learn to sit like this

कि मैं ऐसे बैठना इसलिए नहीं सीखा

through being Indian.

क्योंकि मैं भारतीय हूँ.

I learned this from Spider-Man.
