In 2011, during the final six months of Kim Jong-Il's life,

I lived undercover in North Korea.

Since 2002, I had visited North Korea a few times.

And I had come to realize that to write about it with any meaning,

or to understand the place beyond the regime's propaganda,

the only option was total immersion.

So I posed as a teacher and a missionary

at an all-male university in Pyongyang.

The Pyongyang University of Science and Technology

was founded by Evangelical Christians who cooperate with the regime

to educate the sons of the North Korean elite,

without proselytizing, which is a capital crime there.

The students were 270 young men, expected to be the future leaders

of the most isolated and brutal dictatorship in existence.

When I arrived, they became my students.

2011 was a special year,

marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of North Korea's original Great Leader,

To celebrate the occasion, the regime shut down all universities,

and sent students off to the fields

to build the DPRK's much-heralded ideal

as the world's most powerful and prosperous nation.

My students were the only ones spared from that fate.

North Korea is a gulag posing as a nation.

Everything there is about the Great Leader.

Every book, every newspaper article, every song, every TV program --

စာအုပ်တိုင်း သတင်းစာဆောင်းပါးတိုင်း သီချင်းတိုင်း ရုပ်သံအစီအစဉ်တိုင်း မှာ

there is just one subject.

အကြောင်းအရာတစ်ခုဘဲရှိတာပါ။

The flowers are named after him,

ပန်းတွေကိုလည်း သူ့နာမည်ကို ပေးထားတယ်။

the mountains are carved with his slogans.

တောင်တန်းတွေမှာလည်း သူရဲ့ ကြွေးကြော်သံတွေ ရေးထွင်းထားတယ်။

Every citizen wears the badge of the Great Leader at all times.

နိုင်ငံသားတိုင်းလည်း ခေါင်းဆောင်ကြီး တံဆိပ် အချိန်ပြည့် တပ်ထားရပါတယ်။

Even their calendar system begins with the birth of Kim Il-Sung.

သူတို့ရဲ့ ပြက္ခဒိန်တောင် Kim Il-Sung မွေးနေ့နဲ့ စတာပါ။

The school was a heavily guarded prison, posing as a campus.

ကျောင်းက အတင်းအကြပ် စောင့်ကြပ်ခံနေရတဲ့

ထောင်ကြီးတစ်ခု ဖြစ်ပေမဲ့ ကျောင်းဆောင်တစ်ခု ပုံစံမျိုးလို ထင်ရတယ်။

Teachers could only leave on group outings accompanied by an official minder.

Even then, our trips were limited to sanctioned national monuments

celebrating the Great Leader.

The students were not allowed to leave the campus,

or communicate with their parents.

မိဘတွေနဲ့လည်း ဆက်သွယ်ခွင့်မရှိဘူး။

Their days were meticulously mapped out, and any free time they had

ကျောင်းအချိန်တွေကို လည်း အတိအကျ ရေးဆွဲထားပါတယ်။

was devoted to honoring their Great Leader.

Lesson plans had to meet the approval of North Korean staff,

every class was recorded and reported on, every room was bugged,

and every conversation, overheard.

Every blank space was covered with the portraits of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il,

like everywhere else in North Korea.

We were never allowed to discuss the outside world.

ကျွန်မတို့ အပြင်ကမ္ဘာ အကြောင်း ဆွေးနွေးခွင့်မရှိပါဘူး။

As students of science and technology, many of them were computer majors

သိပ္ပံနဲ့ နည်းပညာကျောင်းသားအနေနဲ့ သူတို့ရဲ့ အဓိကဘာသာရပ်က

but they did not know the existence of the Internet.

They had never heard of Mark Zuckerberg or Steve Jobs.

Facebook, Twitter -- none of those things would have meant a thing.

And I could not tell them.

I went there looking for truth.

ကျွန်မ အဲမှာ အမှန်တရားကိုရှာဖို့ သွားခဲ့တာပါ။

But where do you even start when an entire nation's ideology,

ဒါပေမဲ့ တစ်နိုင်ငံလုံးရဲ့ သဘောတရား ကျောင်းသားတွေရဲ့ နေ့စဉ် လက်တွေ့ဘဝ

my students' day-to-day realities,

and even my own position at the universities,

were all built on lies?

အလိမ်အညာအပေါ် အခြေခံထားတယ် ဆိုတော့

ကျွန်မ ဘယ်ကနေ စတင်ရမှာလဲ။

I started with a game.

ကစားနည်းတစ်ခုဖြင့် ကျွန်မ စခဲ့ပါတယ်။

We played "Truth and Lie."

"အမှန်တရားနဲ့ မုသား"ပေါ့။

A volunteer would write a sentence on the chalkboard,

အကူကျောင်းသား တစ်ယောက်က ကျောက်သင်ပုန်းပေါ်မှာ စာတစ်ကြောင်းရေးတယ်

and the other students had to guess

ကျန်တဲ့ ကျောင်းသားတွေက အမှန်တရားလား

whether it was a truth or a lie.

မုသားလားဆိုပြီး ခန်းမှန်းရတာပါ။

Once a student wrote, "I visited China last year on vacation,"

တစ်ခါတော့ ကျောင်းသားတစ်ယောက်က "ကျွန်ုပ် တရုတ်ပြည်ကို

အရင်တစ်နှစ်က အလည်အပတ် သွားခဲ့သည်။"လို့ ရေးပါတယ်။

and everyone shouted, "Lie!"

အားလုံးက "မုသား"လို့ အော်ကြပါတယ်။

They all knew this wasn't possible.

သူတို့အားလုံး ဒါက မဖြစ်နိုင်ဘူးဆိုတာ သိကြပါတယ်။

Virtually no North Korean is allowed to leave the country.

ဘယ်မြောက်ကိုးရီးယားသားမှ နိုင်ငံကို ထွက်ခွာခွင့်မရှိပါဘူး။

Even traveling within their own country requires a travel pass.

သူတို့ နိုင်ငံအတွင်း ခရီးသွားချင်ရင်တောင် ခရီးသွားခွင့် လက်မှတ်လိုပါတယ်။

I had hoped that this game would reveal some truth about my students,

ဒီကစားနည်းလေးဟာ ကျွန်မ ကျောင်းသားလေးတွေနဲ့ ပတ်သတ်ပြီး

အမှန်တရားတွေကို ဖော်ထုတ်နိုင်မယ်လို့ ယုံကြည်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

because they lie so often and so easily,

အကြောင်းက သူတို့က မကြာမကြာ လွယ်လွယ်နဲ့ လိမ်တတ်ကြလို့ပါ။

whether about the mythical accomplishments of their Great Leader,

သူတို့ခေါင်းဆောင်ကြီးရဲ့ မဟုတ်မှန်တဲ့ အောင်မြင်မှုတွေဘဲဖြစ်ဖြစ်

or the strange claim that they cloned a rabbit as fifth graders.

၅ တန်းတုန်းက ယုန်ကို ပုံတူပွားခဲ့တယ်ဆိုတဲ့ ထူးဆန်းတဲ့ အဆိုဘဲဖြစ်ဖြစ်ပေါ့။

The difference between truth and lies seemed at times hazy to them.

အမှန်တရားနဲ့ မုသားကြား ခြားနားချက်တွေက သူတို့အတွက် မှုန်ဝါးနေတတ်ပါတယ်။

It took me a while to understand the different types of lies;

မုသား ပုံစံအမျိုးမျိုးကို နားလည်ဖို့ ကျွန်မ အချိန်အနည်းငယ် ကြာခဲ့ပါတယ်။

they lie to shield their system from the world,

သူတို့စနစ်ကို ကမ္ဘာကြီး မသိအောင် ကာကွယ်ဖို့ လိမ်ကြတယ်။

or they were taught lies, and were just regurgitating them.

ဒါမှမဟုတ် သူတို့တွေ အလိမ်အညာသင်ခံရတယ် ပြီးရင် အဲဒါတွေကိုဘဲ ပြန်အန်ထုတ်နေတာပါ။

Or, at moments, they lied out of habit.

တစ်ခါတစ်လေ ကျတော့လည်း အကျင့်လို့တောင်ဖြစ်နေပါပြီ။

But if all they have ever known were lies,

ဒါပေမဲ့ သူတို့သိထားတာမှန်သမျှ မုသားတွေဘဲဆိုရင်

how could we expect them to be otherwise?

သူတို့တွေ တစ်မျိုးဖြစ်ဖို့ ဘယ်လို မျှော်လင့်လို့ရမှာလဲ။

Next, I tried to teach them essay writing.

နောက် ကျွန်မ သူတို့ကို စာစီစာကုံးရေးဖို့ သင်ရန် ကြိုးစားခဲ့တယ်။

But that turned out to be nearly impossible.

ဒါပေမဲ့ အဲဒါက မဖြစ်နိုင်လုနီးပါးပါဘဲ။

Essays are about coming up with one's own thesis,

စာစီစာကုံးဆိုတာ ကိုယ်ပိုင် အဆိုကို ရေးပြီး

and making an evidence-based argument to prove it.

အဲဒီအဆိုကို သက်သေပြဖို့ သက်သေခံ ဆွေးနွေးချက်တွေကို ရေးရတာဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

These students, however, were simply told what to think,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒီကျောင်းသားတွေကိုကျတော့ ဘာကိုဘဲစဉ်းစားရမယ်ဆိုတာ ပြောထားပါတယ်။

and they obeyed.

ပြီးရင် သူတို့က နာခံပါတယ်။

In their world, critical thinking was not allowed.

သူတို့ နိုင်ငံမှာ စနစ်ကျ တွေးခေါ်မှုမျိုးဆိုတာ ခွင့်မပြုပါဘူး။

I also gave them the weekly assignment of writing a personal letter,

ကျွန်မ သူတို့ကို ကိုယ်ရေး ပေးစာရေးဖို့ အပတ်စဉ် အိမ်စာ ပေးပါတယ်။

to anybody.

ဘယ်သူထံကိုဘဲဖြစ်ဖြစ်ပေါ့။

It took a long time, but eventually some of them began to write

အချိန် တော်တော် ကြာခဲ့ပေမဲ့လည်း နောက်ဆုံးတော့

သူတို့ထဲက တစ်ချို့ ပေးစာ စတင်ရေးလာပါတယ်။

to their mothers, their friends, their girlfriends.

Although those were just homework,

and would never reach their intended recipients,

my students slowly began to reveal their true feelings in them.

သူတို့ စစ်မှန်တဲ့ ခံစားချက်ကို ဖော်ပြလာကြပါတယ်။

They wrote that they were fed up with the sameness of everything.

သူတို့တွေ အရာရာတိုင်း ဆင်တူဖြစ်နေတာကို စိတ်ကုန်တဲ့ အကြောင်းတွေ ရေးပါတယ် ။

They were worried about their future.

သူတို့ရဲ့ အနာဂတ်ကို စိတ်ပူကြပါတယ်။

In those letters, they rarely ever mentioned their Great Leader.

အဲဒီပေးစာတွေမှာတော့ သူတို့ရဲ့ ခေါင်းဆောင်ကြီးအကြောင်းကို

ထည့်မရေးကြပါဘူး။

I was spending all of my time with these young men.

ကျွန်မ အချိန်အားလုံး ဒီကောင်လေးတွေနဲ့ အတူရှိနေတာပါ။

We all ate meals together, played basketball together.

ကျွန်မတို့တွေ အစားအတူတူစားတယ် ဘက်စကစ်ဘော အတူကစားတယ်။

I often called them gentlemen, which made them giggle.

ကျွန်မ သူတို့ကို လူကြီးလူကောင်းလေးတွေလို့ ခေါ်တော့

သူတို့တွေ တစ်ခစ်ခစ်ရယ်ကြတယ်။

They blushed at the mention of girls.

မိန်းကလေး အကြောင်းပြောရင် သူတို့တွေ ရှက်သွေးဖြာကြပါတယ်။

And I came to adore them.

ကျွန်မ သူတို့ကို မြတ်နိုးလာပါတယ်။

And watching them open up even in the tiniest of ways,

သူတို့ နည်းနည်းလေးဘဲ ရင်ဖွင့်တာကိုကြည့်ရင်းတောင်

was deeply moving.

ကျွန်မ ကြည်နူးမိပါတယ်။

But something also felt wrong.

ဒါပေမဲ့ တစ်ခုခု မှားယွင်းနေသလိုလည်း ခံစားရပါတယ်။

During those months of living in their world,

သူတို့နိုင်ငံမှာ နေနေတဲ့ လအတော်အတွင်း

I often wondered if the truth would, in fact, improve their lives.

အမှန်တရားက သူတို့ရဲ့ ဘဝကို

ပိုကောင်းစေမလားလို့ ကျွန်မ သိချင်မိခဲ့ပါတယ်။

I wanted so much to tell them the truth,

ကျွန်မ သူတို့ကို အမှန်တရား ပြောပြချင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

of their country and of the outside world,

သူတို့နိုင်ငံနဲ့ ပတ်သတ်ပြီး အပြင်ကမ္ဘာနဲ့ ပတ်သတ်ပြီး

where Arab youth were turning their rotten regime inside out,

အာရပ်လူငယ်တွေက သူတို့ရဲ့ အကျင့်ပျက် အစိုးရကို တိုက်ခိုက်နေကြတဲ့အကြောင်း

using the power of social media,

where everyone except them was connected through the world wide web,

which wasn't worldwide after all.

But for them, the truth was dangerous.

By encouraging them to run after it, I was putting them at risk --

အမှန်တရားကို ရှာဖွေဖို့အတွက် သူတို့ကို အားပေးနေတာဟာ

ကျွန်မက သူတို့ကို အရဲစွန့်ခိုင်းနေသလို ဖြစ်နေပါတယ်။

of persecution,

ဖိနှိပ်မှု ခံရဖို့အတွက်

of heartbreak.

ကြေကွဲခံရဖို့ အတွက်ကိုပေါ့။

When you're not allowed to express anything in the open,

သင်ဟာ အရာရာကို ထုတ်ဖော်ပြောခွင့်မရှိတဲ့အခါ

you become good at reading what is unspoken.

မပြောဖြစ်တဲ့ အရာတွေကို ဖတ်တဲ့နေရာမှာ တော်လာပါတယ်။

In one of their personal letters to me, a student wrote that he understood

သူတို့ ကျွန်မကို ရေးပေးတဲ့ ပေးစာတစ်ခုမှာ ကျောင်းသားတစ်ယောက်က ရေးပါတယ်

why I always called them gentlemen.

ကျွန်မ သူတို့ကို ဘာလို့ လူကြီးလူကောင်းလေးလို့ခေါ်တာလဲပါ။

It was because I was wishing them to be gentle in life, he said.

အကြောင်းကတော့ ကျွန်မ သူတို့ကို

ကောင်းမွန်ညင်သာစေချင်လို့ပါလို့ ပြောပါတယ်။

On my last day in December of 2011,

2011 ဒီဇင်ဘာ နောက်ဆုံးနေ့လေး

the day Kim Jong-Il's death was announced,

Kim Jong-Il သေဆုံးကြောင်း ကြေငြာတဲ့နေ့လေးမှာ

their world shattered.

I had to leave without a proper goodbye.

But I think they knew how sad I was for them.

Once, toward the end of my stay, a student said to me,

တစ်ခါတော့ ကျွန်မရဲ့ နောက်ဆုံးနေ့လေးမှာ ကျောင်းသားတစ်ယောက်က ကျွန်မကိုပြောပါတယ်။

"Professor, we never think of you as being different from us.

"ဆရာမကို ကျွန်တော်တို့ နဲ့ မတူကွဲပြားတယ်လို့

ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဘယ်တော့မှ မတွေးပါဘူး။"

Our circumstances are different, but you're the same as us.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ အခြေအနေအရပ်တွေက မတူပေမဲ့လည်း

ဆရာမက ကျွန်တော်တို့နဲ့ အတူတူပါ။

We want you to know that we truly think of you as being the same."

Today, if I could respond to my students with a letter of my own,

ကျွန်မ သူတို့ကို ဒါလေးပြောမှာပါ။

"My dear gentlemen,

"ကျွန်မရဲ့ ချစ်လှစွာသော လူကြီးလူကောင်းလေးတွေ

It's been a bit over three years since I last saw you.

မင်းတို့နဲ့ နောက်ဆုံးတွေ့တာ သုံးနှစ်ကျော်တောင်ရှိသွားပြီ။

And now, you must be 22 -- maybe even as old as 23.

But I understood then, you wanted to share that bond of our mother tongue.

I called you my gentlemen,

but I don't know if being gentle in Kim Jong-Un's merciless North Korea

I don't want to imagine what might happen to you.

မင်းတို့ ဘယ်လိုဖြစ်ပျက်သွားမှာကို ငါ စိတ်ကူးယဉ် မကြည့်ချင်ဘူး။

If my attempts to reach you have inspired something new in you,

မင်းတို့ကို စာသင်ဖို့ ငါရဲ့ အားထုတ်မှုတွေက မင်းတို့ကို လုံ့ဆော်သလိုဖြစ်သွားခဲ့ရင်

I would rather you forget me.

မင်းတို့ ငါကို ခွင့်လွှတ်ကြပါ။

Become soldiers of your Great Leader, and live long, safe lives.

မင်းတို့ ခေါင်းဆောင်ကြီးအတွက် စစ်သားတွေ ဖြစ်လာကြပါ။

အေးချမ်း လုံခြုံတဲ့ ဘဝကို ဖြတ်သန်းပါ။

You once asked me if I thought your city of Pyongyang was beautiful,

မင်းတို့ Pyongyang မြို့ လှတယ်လို့ထင်လား ငါကို တစ်ခါမေးတယ်။

and I could not answer truthfully then.

ငါ အမှန်အတိုင်း မဖြေနိုင်ခဲ့ပါဘူး။

But I know why you asked.

ဒါပေမဲ့ မင်းတို့ ဘာလို့ မေးလဲဆိုတာ ငါသိပါတယ်။

I know that it was important for you to hear that I, your teacher,

ဒါက မင်းတို့အတွက် အရေးကြီးလို့လေ။ ငါ မင်းတို့ရဲ့ဆရာမ

the one who has seen the world that you are forbidden from,

I know hearing that would make your lives there a bit more bearable,

but no, I don't find your capital beautiful.

ဒါပေမဲ့ လည်း မင်းတို့ မြို့တော်ကို လှတယ်လို့ ငါ မထင်ဘူး။

Not because it's monotone and concrete,

ငြီးငွေ့ဖို့ကောင်းလို့ အသက်မဲ့သလို ခံစားရလို့တော့မဟုတ်ဘူး

but because of what it symbolizes:

ဒါပေမဲ့ အဲဒါ ဖော်ဆောင်နေတဲ့ အသွင်က

a monster that feeds off the rest of the country,

တစ်နိုင်ငံလုံးကို မှီငြမ်းစားသုံးနေတဲ့ ဘီးလူးနဲ့ တူနေလို့ပါ။

where citizens are soldiers and slaves.

နိုင်ငံသားတွေက စစ်သားတွေ ကျေးကျွန်တွေဖြစ်နေတယ်လေ။

All I see there is darkness.

ငါ မြင်တွေ့ရတဲ့ အရာတွေကတော့ အမှောင်ထုပါဘဲ။

But it's your home, so I cannot hate it.

ဒါပေမဲ့ အဲဒါက မင်းတို့ အိမ်ဆိုတော့ ငါ မုန်းလို့မရဘူးလေ။

And I hope instead that you, my lovely young gentlemen,

မင်းတို့ ငါရဲ့ ချစ်လှစွာသော လူကြီးလူကောင်းလေးတွေက

will one day help make it beautiful.
