In 2011, during the final six months of Kim Jong-Il's life,

I lived undercover in North Korea.

私は北朝鮮に潜入していました

I was born and raised in South Korea, their enemy.

私が生まれ育ったのは 北朝鮮の敵 韓国です

I live in America, their other enemy.

私が暮らすのは もう一つの敵 アメリカです

Since 2002, I had visited North Korea a few times.

2002年から数回 北朝鮮を訪れていました

And I had come to realize that to write about it with any meaning,

or to understand the place beyond the regime's propaganda,

the only option was total immersion.

So I posed as a teacher and a missionary

at an all-male university in Pyongyang.

The Pyongyang University of Science and Technology

平壌科学技術大学は

was founded by Evangelical Christians who cooperate with the regime

to educate the sons of the North Korean elite,

without proselytizing, which is a capital crime there.

ただし布教活動はしません 死刑に値する重罪ですから

The students were 270 young men, expected to be the future leaders

学生は270人 将来は この世で最も孤立した ―

of the most isolated and brutal dictatorship in existence.

非人道的な独裁国家の 指導者になることを期待されています

When I arrived, they became my students.

そんな彼らが 着いてすぐ 私の生徒になりました

2011 was a special year,

2011年は特別な年でした

marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of North Korea's original Great Leader,

北朝鮮の最初の「偉大なる指導者」 金日成の生誕100周年を

Kim Il-Sung.

祝う年だったのです

To celebrate the occasion, the regime shut down all universities,

これを祝うために 政府は大学をすべて閉鎖し

and sent students off to the fields

学生を田畑に送り

to build the DPRK's much-heralded ideal

朝鮮民主主義人民共和国が 高々と掲げた理想 ―

as the world's most powerful and prosperous nation.

「世界で最も強力で豊かな国」を 築こうとしていました

My students were the only ones spared from that fate.

私の生徒だけは 義務を免除されていました

North Korea is a gulag posing as a nation.

北朝鮮は国家の体をした 強制収容所です

Everything there is about the Great Leader.

「偉大なる指導者」が すべての中心です

Every book, every newspaper article, every song, every TV program --

本も 新聞記事も 歌も テレビ番組も ―

there is just one subject.

テーマは ただ一つです

The flowers are named after him,

花々は彼に ちなんで名付けられ

the mountains are carved with his slogans.

山々には彼による スローガンが彫られています

Every citizen wears the badge of the Great Leader at all times.

市民は皆 偉大なる指導者の バッジを常に身につけています

Even their calendar system begins with the birth of Kim Il-Sung.

暦までが金日成の 誕生した年から始まります

The school was a heavily guarded prison, posing as a campus.

学校はキャンパスを装った 警備厳重な刑務所でした

Teachers could only leave on group outings accompanied by an official minder.

教師の遠出は 当局の監視がついた 集団でなければ許されませんでした

Even then, our trips were limited to sanctioned national monuments

それでも 旅行できるのは 許可が出た 偉大なる指導者を讃える ―

celebrating the Great Leader.

国家記念碑に限られました

The students were not allowed to leave the campus,

学生たちは キャンパスを離れることも 両親に連絡することも

or communicate with their parents.

許されていませんでした

Their days were meticulously mapped out, and any free time they had

彼らの日常は細かくスケジュールが組まれ 自由時間はすべて

was devoted to honoring their Great Leader.

偉大なる指導者を 讃えることに捧げられました

Lesson plans had to meet the approval of North Korean staff,

指導案は北朝鮮側の職員の 承認が必要で

every class was recorded and reported on, every room was bugged,

授業はすべて記録 報告され 教室はすべて盗聴器が仕掛けられ

and every conversation, overheard.

会話はすべて聞かれていました

Every blank space was covered with the portraits of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il,

北朝鮮では どこでもそうでしたが 空いている場所は金日成と金正日の

like everywhere else in North Korea.

肖像画で埋め尽くされていました

We were never allowed to discuss the outside world.

外の世界について話すことは 絶対に許されませんでした

As students of science and technology, many of them were computer majors

科技大の学生ですから コンピュータ専攻も多かったのですが

but they did not know the existence of the Internet.

彼らはインターネットの存在を知らず

They had never heard of Mark Zuckerberg or Steve Jobs.

ザッカーバーグやジョブズの名前すら 聞いたことがありませんでした

Facebook, Twitter -- none of those things would have meant a thing.

Facebookも Twitterも まったく意味がわからなかったでしょう

And I could not tell them.

私も教えることはできませんでした

I went there looking for truth.

私は真実を求めて北朝鮮に行きました

But where do you even start when an entire nation's ideology,

ところが 国家のイデオロギーも

my students' day-to-day realities,

生徒の日々の現実も

and even my own position at the universities,

大学での私の立場でさえもが 嘘の上に成り立っているというのに

were all built on lies?

いったい どこから 手をつければいいのか？

I started with a game.

それでゲームを始めたのです

We played "Truth and Lie."

『ホントとウソ』というゲームです

A volunteer would write a sentence on the chalkboard,

手をあげた学生が 黒板に文を書き

and the other students had to guess

その文が本当か嘘かを

whether it was a truth or a lie.

みんなで当てるのです

Once a student wrote, "I visited China last year on vacation,"

ある時一人の学生が 「去年 休みに中国へ行った」と書きました

and everyone shouted, "Lie!"

すると全員が「ウソ！」と叫んだのです

They all knew this wasn't possible.

ありえないことだと誰でもわかりました

Virtually no North Korean is allowed to leave the country.

北朝鮮の国民は事実上 国外に出ることを許されていません

Even traveling within their own country requires a travel pass.

国内を旅行する時でさえ 旅券が必要です

I had hoped that this game would reveal some truth about my students,

このゲームで彼らの真実が 少しでも明らかになればと思ったのです

because they lie so often and so easily,

というのも彼らは あまりにも簡単に よく嘘をつくからです

whether about the mythical accomplishments of their Great Leader,

偉大なる指導者の想像上の偉業とか

or the strange claim that they cloned a rabbit as fifth graders.

５年生でウサギのクローンを作ったという 奇妙な主張とか・・・

The difference between truth and lies seemed at times hazy to them.

真実と嘘との境界線は 彼らにも わかっていないことがありました

It took me a while to understand the different types of lies;

嘘にもいろいろな種類があると気づくまで 時間がかかりました

they lie to shield their system from the world,

彼らは 世界から自国の体制を かばうために嘘をつきます

or they were taught lies, and were just regurgitating them.

嘘を教えられて それをただ繰り返す場合もあります

Or, at moments, they lied out of habit.

時には習慣で嘘をつくこともあります

But if all they have ever known were lies,

でも もし彼らが学んできたことが 全部嘘なら

how could we expect them to be otherwise?

嘘をつかないはずがないでしょう

Next, I tried to teach them essay writing.

次に私は小論文を書くことを 教えようとしました

But that turned out to be nearly impossible.

でも それはまず不可能だとわかりました

Essays are about coming up with one's own thesis,

小論文では自分なりの仮説を立て

and making an evidence-based argument to prove it.

それを証明するために 証拠に基づいた議論を展開します

These students, however, were simply told what to think,

ところが学生たちは 単に押し付けられた考え方に

and they obeyed.

従うだけだったのです

In their world, critical thinking was not allowed.

彼らの世界では 批判的思考など許されていませんでした

I also gave them the weekly assignment of writing a personal letter,

それから私は毎週 個人的な手紙を書く宿題を出しました

to anybody.

宛先は誰でも構いません

It took a long time, but eventually some of them began to write

かなり時間がかかりましたが そのうち母親や友人やガールフレンド宛に

to their mothers, their friends, their girlfriends.

手紙を書き始める学生が出てきました

Although those were just homework,

and would never reach their intended recipients,

相手に届くことなどないのに

my students slowly began to reveal their true feelings in them.

生徒たちは少しずつ 内に秘めた 本当の気持ちを表すようになりました

They wrote that they were fed up with the sameness of everything.

何も変わらないことへの うんざりした気持ち ―

They were worried about their future.

将来への不安・・・

In those letters, they rarely ever mentioned their Great Leader.

手紙には 偉大なる指導者は ほとんど登場しませんでした

I was spending all of my time with these young men.

私はいつも学生たちと過ごしていました

We all ate meals together, played basketball together.

一緒に食事をし 一緒にバスケットボールをしました

I often called them gentlemen, which made them giggle.

「紳士諸君」と呼びかけると 彼らはクスクスと笑いました

They blushed at the mention of girls.

女の子の話をすると 赤くなりました

And I came to adore them.

私は彼らが愛おしくなりました

And watching them open up even in the tiniest of ways,

たとえほんの少しでも 心を開いてくれると

was deeply moving.

とても感動しました

But something also felt wrong.

ただ 何かがおかしいとも感じました

During those months of living in their world,

彼らの世界で暮らした数か月間 ―

I often wondered if the truth would, in fact, improve their lives.

真実が 彼らの人生にとって 実際にプラスになるのか悩みました

I wanted so much to tell them the truth,

私は彼らの国や外の世界の真実を

of their country and of the outside world,

彼らに伝えたくて 仕方がありませんでした

where Arab youth were turning their rotten regime inside out,

アラブの若者がSNSの力を借りて 腐敗した体制を

using the power of social media,

ひっくり返していること

where everyone except them was connected through the world wide web,

彼ら以外のあらゆる人々が 全世界に広がるウェブでつながっていること

which wasn't worldwide after all.

ただ それも結局 「全世界」ではなかったのですが

But for them, the truth was dangerous.

しかし一方で 学生たちにとって 真実とは危険なものでした

By encouraging them to run after it, I was putting them at risk --

真実を追求するように促すことで 私は彼らにリスクを負わせていました

of persecution,

告発されるリスク そして

of heartbreak.

失望するリスクです

When you're not allowed to express anything in the open,

公の場での表現が許されなければ

you become good at reading what is unspoken.

言葉にできないことを 読み取るのが上手になります

In one of their personal letters to me, a student wrote that he understood

ある学生は私に宛てた手紙に こう書きました

why I always called them gentlemen.

なぜ私が自分たちを「紳士諸君」と 呼ぶかわかった ―

It was because I was wishing them to be gentle in life, he said.

それは 紳士的に生きてほしいからだ と

On my last day in December of 2011,

2011年12月 私にとって 北朝鮮での最後の日 ―

the day Kim Jong-Il's death was announced,

金正日の死が公表された日に

their world shattered.

彼らの世界は崩壊しました

I had to leave without a proper goodbye.

お別れもできないまま 出国しなければなりませんでした

But I think they knew how sad I was for them.

でも 私がどれほど寂しかったか 彼らは わかってくれたと思います

Once, toward the end of my stay, a student said to me,

滞在期間が終わりに近づいた頃 ひとりの学生が私に言いました

"Professor, we never think of you as being different from us.

「先生 あなたが僕たちと違うなんて 思ったことは一度もありません

Our circumstances are different, but you're the same as us.

環境は違っていても あなたと僕たちは同じです

We want you to know that we truly think of you as being the same."

同じだと信じていることを 知っていてほしいのです」

Today, if I could respond to my students with a letter of my own,

もしも今 私が手紙で 生徒たちに応えられるなら ―

which is of course impossible,

もちろん そんなことは無理ですが ―

I would tell them this:

彼らに こう伝えたいです

"My dear gentlemen,

「親愛なる紳士諸君

It's been a bit over three years since I last saw you.

最後に会ってから ３年ちょっとになりますね

And now, you must be 22 -- maybe even as old as 23.

今 皆さんは22才 23才になった人もいるでしょう

At our final class, I asked you if there was anything you wanted.

最後の授業で 私は皆さんに 何か願いがあるか 尋ねましたね

The only wish you expressed, the only thing you ever asked of me

共に過ごした数か月で 皆さんが口にした たった一つの望み ―

in all those months we spent together,

私に対する唯一の願いとは

was for me to speak to you in Korean.

私が朝鮮語で話しかけることでした

Just once.

一度だけでもいいと

I was there to teach you English;

私の仕事は英語を教えることでしたから

you knew it wasn't allowed.

それは許されないと知っていたはずです

But I understood then, you wanted to share that bond of our mother tongue.

でもその時 私は 母語という絆を 共有したいという気持ちを理解しました

I called you my gentlemen,

皆さんのことを「紳士諸君」と 呼びましたが

but I don't know if being gentle in Kim Jong-Un's merciless North Korea

金正恩の冷徹な北朝鮮で 紳士的であることが いいことなのか

is a good thing.

私にはわかりません

I don't want you to lead a revolution --

私は 皆さんに 革命を率いてほしくもないし

let some other young person do it.

他の若者に それをさせたくもありません

The rest of the world might casually encourage or even expect

世界は気軽に 「北朝鮮の春」のようなものを勧め

some sort of North Korean Spring,

期待すらあるかもしれないけれど

but I don't want you to do anything risky,

皆さんには危険を 冒してほしくありません

because I know in your world, someone is always watching.

そちらでは いつでも誰かが 監視しているからです

I don't want to imagine what might happen to you.

皆さんの身に何かあるなんて 想像したくないのです

If my attempts to reach you have inspired something new in you,

私が皆さんに近づくことで 新しいことを吹き込んでしまったのなら

私のことを忘れてくれた方がいい

I would rather you forget me.

Become soldiers of your Great Leader, and live long, safe lives.

偉大なる指導者の兵士として 安全に長生きしてくれた方がいい

You once asked me if I thought your city of Pyongyang was beautiful,

皆さんは以前私に 平壌は美しいと思うか 尋ねましたね

and I could not answer truthfully then.

その時は本心を言えませんでした

But I know why you asked.

ただ 尋ねた理由はわかります

I know that it was important for you to hear that I, your teacher,

教師であり 皆さんには禁じられた 世界を見てきた私が

the one who has seen the world that you are forbidden from,

この街を一番美しいと言い切ることが

declare your city as the most beautiful.

皆さんにとって 重要なのは わかっています

I know hearing that would make your lives there a bit more bearable,

その答えで 皆さんが生活に 少しだけ耐えられるようになるのだから

but no, I don't find your capital beautiful.

それでも 私は皆さんの首都を 美しいとは思いません

Not because it's monotone and concrete,

それは単調で コンクリートだらけだからではなく

but because of what it symbolizes:

それが象徴するもの すなわち

a monster that feeds off the rest of the country,

市民が兵士であり 奴隷である この国を

where citizens are soldiers and slaves.

食いものにしている怪物のせいです

All I see there is darkness.

そこに見えるのは 暗闇だけです

But it's your home, so I cannot hate it.

それでも皆さんの故郷ですから 憎む気にはなれません

And I hope instead that you, my lovely young gentlemen,

可愛い若き紳士諸君 その代わりに いつか皆さんの手で

will one day help make it beautiful.

この街を美しくしてください
