Well, I was born with a rare visual condition

بە حاڵەتێکى دەگمەنەوە لەدایک بووم

called achromatopsia, which is total color blindness,

so I've never seen color,

and I don't know what color looks like,

because I come from a grayscale world.

To me, the sky is always gray,

flowers are always gray,

and television is still in black and white.

But, since the age of 21,

instead of seeing color, I can hear color.

In 2003, I started a project

It's a color sensor that detects

the color frequency in front of me — (Frequency sounds) —

and sends this frequency to a chip installed

at the back of my head, and I hear the color in front of me

through the bone, through bone conduction.

(Frequency sounds) So, for example, if I have, like —

This is the sound of purple. (Frequency sounds)

For example, this is the sound of grass. (Frequency sounds)

ئەمە ڕەنگى گیایە،

This is red, like TED. (Frequency sounds)

ئەمە ڕەنگى سورە، وەک TED.

This is the sound of a dirty sock. (Laughter)

Which is like yellow, this one.

وەکو ڕەنگى زەرد وایە.

So I've been hearing color all the time for eight years,

ئێستا 8 ساڵە من ڕەنگەکان دەبیستم،

since 2004, so I find it completely normal now

لە ساڵى (2004)ەوە، بۆیە ئێستا زۆر بەلامەوە ئاسایىیە.

to hear color all the time.

At the start, though, I had to memorize the names you give

for each color, so I had to memorize the notes,

دەبو دەنگەکەشیان لەبەر بکەم،

but after some time, all this information

ئەمانەش هەمو وایان کرد

became a perception.

دنیایەکى تایبەتم بۆ دروست ببىَ

I didn't have to think about the notes.

ئیتر پێویستم بەوەنەبو بیر لە دەنگەکە بکەمەوە،

And after some time, this perception became a feeling.

دواى ماوەیەکیش، ئەم دنیابینیە بوو بە هەستێک بۆم.

I started to have favorite colors,

وام لێ هات حەزم لە ڕەنگێک بێت

and I started to dream in colors.

و خەوى ڕەنگاوڕەنگ ببینم

So, when I started to dream in color is when I felt

ئەوکاتە خەوى ڕەنگاوڕەنگم بینى کە هەستمکرد

that the software and my brain had united,

کە بەرنامە کۆمپیتەریەکە و مێشکى من یەکیان گرتووە.

because in my dreams, it was my brain creating

لە خەوەکانما مێشکم

electronic sounds. It wasn't the software,

so that's when I started to feel like a cyborg.

It's when I started to feel that the cybernetic device

was no longer a device.

It had become a part of my body,

an extension of my senses,

and after some time, it even became a part

of my official image.

This is my passport from 2004.

You're not allowed to appear on U.K. passports

وێنەى سەر پاسپۆرتى بریتانى نابێت

with electronic equipment, but I insisted

ئامێرى ئەلکترۆنى تیا بێت، بەڵام من پێم لەسەر ئەوە دادەگرت

to the passport office that what they were seeing

کە ئەو ئامێرەەی بەڕێوەبەرایەتی پاسپۆرت دەیبینێت

was actually a new part of my body,

ئەو بەشێکى نويَى جەستەى منە

an extension of my brain, and they finally accepted me

درێژکراوەى مێشکمە، دواجار ڕازى بوون بهێڵن

to appear with the passport photo.

بەو شێوەیە لە پاسپۆرتەکەدا دەرکەوم.

So, life has changed dramatically since I hear color,

لەوکاتەوە کە ڕەنگەکان دەبیستم ژیانم زۆر گۆڕاوە.

because color is almost everywhere,

ڕەنگەکان تەقریبەن لە هەموو شوێنێکدا هەن

so the biggest change for example is

بۆیە گەورەترین گۆڕانکارى بۆ نمونە

going to an art gallery, I can listen to a Picasso,

ئەوەیە کە دەچمە پێشانگاى وێنەکێشان دەتوانم بۆ نمونە گويَ لە پیکاسۆ بگرم

for example. So it's like I'm going to a concert hall,

وەک ئەوە وایە بچم بۆ هۆڵێکى کۆنسێرت

because I can listen to the paintings.

وەک ئەوەى گويَ لە تابلۆکان بگرم

And supermarkets, I find this is very shocking,

بەلاى منەوە سوپەرمارکێتەکانیش زۆر سەرنجڕاکێشن

it's very, very attractive to walk along a supermarket.

تێپەربون بە ناو سوپەرمارکێتەکاندا زۆر سەرنجڕاکێشە

It's like going to a nightclub.

وەک ئەوە وایە بچیتە یانەیەکى شەوانە

It's full of different melodies. (Laughter) Yeah.

پڕە لە میلۆدى جیاجیا

Especially the aisle with cleaning products.

بەتایبەت کە بە بەشى کەرەسەى پاککردنەوەکاندا تێپەڕى،

It's just fabulous. (Laughter)

ئەويَ زۆر خۆشە

Also, the way I dress has changed.

شێوازى خۆگۆڕینیشم گۆڕاوە.

Before, I used to dress in a way that it looked good.

جاران وا خۆم دەگۆڕى کە دیمەنى جوان بێت،

Now I dress in a way that it sounds good. (Laughter)

ئێستا وا خۆم دەگۆڕم کە دەنگى خۆش بێت

(Applause)

So today I'm dressed in C major,

ئەمڕۆ لەسەر تۆنى (سى) بەرز خۆم گۆڕیوە

so it's quite a happy chord. (Laughter)

کە ئاوازێکى زۆر خۆشە

If I had to go to a funeral, though,

ئەگەر بچم بۆ تەعزییەک

I would dress in B minor, which would be

لەسەر تۆنى (بى) نزم خۆم ئه گۆڕم

turquoise, purple and orange. (Laughter)

وەک پیرۆزەیى، مۆر و پرتەقاڵى

Also, food, the way I look at food has changed,

تەنانەت خواردنیش، تێڕوانینم بۆ خواردنیش گۆڕاوە.

because now I can display the food on a plate,

کە خواردنێک لەسەر قاپێک دانرابيَ

so I can eat my favorite song. (Laughter)

ئەتوانم گۆرانىیە پەسەندکراوەکەم بخۆم.

So depending on how I display it,

بە چۆنێتى دانانەکەى،

I can hear and I can compose music with food.

دەتوانم بیانبیستم و ئاواز دابنێم

So imagine a restaurant where we can have, like,

چێشتخانەیەک بهێنە بەرچاوى خۆت کە بۆ نمونە

Lady Gaga salads as starters. (Laughter) I mean,

زەڵاتەى (لەیدى گاگا) پێشکەش بکەن

this would get teenagers to eat their vegetables, probably.

ڕەنگە ئەمە وا بکات نەوجەوانەکان سەوزەواتەکان بخۆن

And also, some Rachmaninov piano concertos

یان ئاوازێکى پیانۆى رەحمانینۆف

as main dishes, and some Bjork or Madonna desserts,

وەک خواردنى سەرەکى شیرینى بیۆرک یان مادۆناش هەبێت

that would be a very exciting restaurant

ئەمە دەبێتە چێشتخانەیەکى زۆرخۆش

where you can actually eat songs.

کە دەتوانى گۆرانى لێ بخۆیت

Also, the way I perceive beauty has changed,

هەروەها تێڕوانینم بۆ (جوانى)ش گۆڕاوە

because when I look at someone, I hear their face,

چونکە کاتيَ تەماشاى کەسێک دەکەم، گوێم لە ڕوخسارى دەبێت،

so someone might look very beautiful but sound terrible.

بەمەش ئەوکەسەى کە زۆر جوانە دیارە ڕەنگە زۆر ناقۆڵا بیبیستیت

(Laughter) And it might happen the opposite,

ڕەنگە پێچەوانەکەش ڕوبدات

the other way around. So I really enjoy creating, like,

بۆیە حەز بەوە ئەکەم

sound portraits of people.

کە پۆرترێتى دەنگەکانیان بکێشم

Instead of drawing someone's face, like drawing the shape,

لەجیاتى کێشانى وێنەى ڕوخساریان

I point at them with the eye and I write down

بە چاوە ئەلکترۆنى یەکەم تەماشایان دەکەم

the different notes I hear, and then I create sound portraits.

و وێنەى ئەو دەنگە جیاوازانە دەکێشم کە دەیانبیستم

Here's some faces.

Yeah, Nicole Kidman sounds good. (Laughter)

Some people, I would never relate, but they sound similar.

هەنديَ کەس هیچ پەیوەندییان پێکەوە نیە، بەڵام لەیەک دەچن.

Prince Charles has some similarities with Nicole Kidman.

شازادە چارلس و نیکۆل کیرمان چەند خاڵێکى هاوبەشیان هەیە.

They have similar sound of eyes.

دەنگى چاى شازادە چارلس و نیکۆلَ کیدمان لەیەک دەچن.

So you relate people that you wouldn't relate,

بەم شێوەیە دەتوانى کەسانێک پێکەوە ببەستیتەوە کە هیچ پەیوەندییان بە یەکترەوە نیە

and you can actually also create concerts

تەنانەت دەتوانى کۆنسێرتیش ساز بدەیت

by looking at the audience faces.

بەوەى تەماشاى دەموچاوى ئامادەبوان بکەیت

So I connect the eye, and then I play the audience's faces.

چاوە ئەلکترۆنیەکەم دەخەمە کارو ڕوخسارى ئامادەبوان دەژەنم

The good thing about this is,

باشى ئەمە لەوەدایە

if the concert doesn't sound good, it's their fault.

کە ئەگەر کۆنسێرتەکە خۆش نەبێت، خەتاى ئەوانە

It's not my fault, because — (Laughter)

خەتاى من نیە

And so another thing that happens is that

شتێکى تریش ئەوەیە کە

I started having this secondary effect

خەریکە کاریگەرى لاوەکیم بۆ دروست دەبێت

that normal sounds started to become color.

دەنگە ئاساییەکان وەکو ڕەنگ دەبیستم.

I heard a telephone tone, and it felt green

دەنگى تەلەفۆن هەمان دەنگى سەوزە

because it sounded just like the color green.

لە ڕەنگى سەوز دەچێت.

The BBC beeps, they sound turquoise,

(تووت)ەکانى BBC هەمان دەنگى پیرۆزەییان هەیە

and listening to Mozart became a yellow experience,

و گوێگرتن لە مۆزارت ئەزمونێکى ڕەنگ زەردە

so I started to paint music and paint people's voices,

بۆیە دەستم کرد بە کێشانى وێنەى مۆسیقا و کێشانى وێنە دەنگى خەڵک

because people's voices have frequencies

چونکە دەنگى خەڵک شەپۆلى تیایە

that I relate to color.

و منیش دەیانبەستمەوە بە ڕەنگەکەوە

And here's some music translated into color.

ئەمانە چەند ئاوازێکن کە وەرمگێڕاون بۆ سەر وێنە:

For example, Mozart, "Queen of the Night," looks like this.

مۆزارت-شاژنى شەو، لەمە دەچێت

(Music) Very yellow and very colorful,

زۆر زەردە و زۆریش ڕەنگاوڕەنگە

because there's many different frequencies.

چونکە شەپۆلى زۆر جیاوازى تیایە

(Music)

(ميوزيك)

And this is a completely different song.

ئەمەش گۆرانییەکى تەواو جیاوازە

(Music) It's Justin Bieber's "Baby." (Laughter)

It is very pink and very yellow.

پەمەیى و زەردى زۆرە

So, also voices, I can transform speeches into color,

هەروەها دەنگى مرۆڤیش. دەتوانم قسەکان بگۆڕم بۆ ڕەنگ.

for example, these are two very well-known speeches.

بۆ نمونە ئەمە دوو وتەى زۆر بەناوبانگن.

One of them is Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream,"

یەکێکیان وتەى (من خەونێکم هەیە)ى مارتن لوسەر کینگە

and the other one is Hitler.

و ئەوى تریشیان هى هیتلەرە

And I like to exhibit these paintings in the exhibition halls

حەزئەکەم ئەم وێنانە لە پێشانگاکاندا بخەمە بەرچاوى بینەران

without labels, and then I ask people,

بەبيَ ئەوەى ناوى کەسەکەیان لەسەربێت

"Which one do you prefer?"

ئینجا لە بینەران دەپرسم "کامیان پەسەند دەکەیت؟"

And most people change their preference

زۆربەى خەڵک بۆچونەکەیان دەگۆڕن.

when I tell them that the one on the left is Hitler

کە پێیان دەڵێم ئەوەى دەستە چەپیان هى هیتلەرەو

and the one on the right is Martin Luther King.

ئەوەى دەستەڕاست هى مارتن لوسەرە

So I got to a point when I was able to perceive 360 colors,

گەیشتمە ئاستێک کە بتوانم 360 ڕەنگ ببینم

just like human vision.

ڕێک وەک مرۆڤى ئاسایى

I was able to differentiate all the degrees of the color wheel.

دەمتوانى هەمو ڕەنگەکانى سەر خلۆکەى ڕەنگەکان ببینم و هەمو ئاستەکانى لەیەک جیابکەمەوە

But then, I just thought that

بەڵام بۆم دەرکەوت

this human vision wasn't good enough.

کە تواناى بینینى مرۆڤ ئەو باشە نیە

There's many, many more colors around us

زۆر زۆر ڕەنگى تر لە چواردەورماندا هەیە

that we cannot perceive,

کە ناتوانین بیانبینین

but that electronic eyes can perceive.

بەڵام چاوە ئەلکترۆنیەکان دەتوانن بیابینین

So I decided to continue extending my color senses,

بۆیە بڕیارم دا مەوداى ڕەنگەکانم فراوانتر بکەم

and I added infrared and I added ultraviolet

ئینجا تیشکى ژێر سورو پاشان سەرو وەنەوشەیيم

to the color-to-sound scale, so now I can hear colors

بۆ پێوانەى ڕەنگ –بۆ- دەنگەکەم زیادکرد

that the human eye cannot perceive.

کەواتە ئێستا دەتوانم ئەو ڕەنگانە ببیستم کە چاوى مرۆڤ ناتوانيَ بیانبینێت.

For example, perceiving infrared is good because you can

بۆ نمونە بینینى تیشکى ژێرسور شتێکى باشە چونکە

actually detect if there's movement detectors in a room.

دەتوانى ئەگەر هەستارێکى جوڵە دیاریکەر لە ژوورەکەدا هەبێت بیدۆزیتەوە

I can hear if someone points at me with a remote control.

ئەگەر کەسێک ڕوى رێموت کۆنترۆڵێکم تيَ بکات گوێم لێ دەبێت

And the good thing about perceiving ultraviolet is that

باشیەکەى ناسینەوەى تیشکى سەرو وەنەوشەیش ئەوەیە

you can hear if it's a good day or a bad day to sunbathe,

کە دەتوانیت بزانیت ڕۆژێکى گونجاوە بۆ خۆخستنه بەرخۆر یان نا

because ultraviolet is a dangerous color,

چونکە ڕەنگى سەرو وەنەوشەی ڕەنگێکى مەترسیدارە

a color that can actually kill us, so I think we should all have this wish

ڕەنگێکە کە دەتوانيَ لەناومان بەرێت، بۆیە وابزانم پێویستە هەمومان ئاواتى ئەوە بخوازین

to perceive things that we cannot perceive.

کە هەست بەو شتانەش بکەین کە لە دەرەوەى هەستەکانماندان

That's why, two years ago,

بۆیە دوو سالَ لەمەوبەر

I created the Cyborg Foundation,

دامەزراوەى سایبۆرگم دامەزراند

which is a foundation that tries to help people

بۆ یارمەتیدانى ئەو کەسانەى کە دەیانەوێت

become a cyborg, tries to encourage people

ببنە سایبۆرگ (تێکەڵەى مرۆڤ و ئامێر).هەروەها بۆ ئەوەى خەڵکیش هانبدات

to extend their senses

مەوداى هەستەکانیان زیاد بکەن

by using technology as part of the body.

لەڕێگەى زیادکردنى ئامێرى تەکنۆلۆجیەوە بۆ جەستەیان

We should all think that knowledge comes from our senses,

دەبێت ئەوە بزانین کە ئێمە لە رێگەی هەستەکانمانەوە زانیارییمان پێ دەگات

so if we extend our senses,

بۆیە ئەگەر هەستەکانمان فراوان بکەین

we will consequently extend our knowledge.

لە ئەنجامدا زانیارییەکانیشمان زیاد دەکات

I think life will be much more exciting

وابزانم ژیان زۆر خۆشتر دەبێت

when we stop creating applications for mobile phones

ئەگەر لە بری ئەوەی پڕۆگرامی مۆبایل دروست بکەین،

and we start creating applications for our own body.

پڕۆگرام بۆ جەستەی خۆمان دروست بکەین

I think this will be a big, big change

وابزانم ئەمە هەلێکی زۆر گەورەیە

that we will see during this century.

و لەم سەدەیەدا بۆمان هەڵدەکەوێت

So I do encourage you all to think about which senses

بۆیە هانتان دەدەم کە بیر لەو هەستانەتان بکەنەوە

you'd like to extend.

کە حەز دەکەن فراوانی بکەن.

I would encourage you to become a cyborg.

هانتان دەدەم کە ببن بە سایبۆرگ (تێکەڵەی مرۆڤ و ئامێر).

You won't be alone. Thank you. (Applause)
