All stories interest me,

and some haunt me until I end up writing them.

Certain themes keep coming up:

justice, loyalty, violence, death, political and social issues,

freedom.

I'm aware of the mystery around us,

또 우리가 겪는 미스테리한 일들도 생각합니다.

so I write about coincidences, premonitions,

emotions, dreams, the power of nature, magic.

In the last 20 years, I have published a few books,

but I have lived in anonymity until February of 2006,

when I carried the Olympic flag in the Winter Olympics in Italy.

Allow me to tell you about my four minutes of fame.

One of the organizers of the Olympic ceremony,

of the opening ceremony,

called me and said that I had been selected to be one of the flag bearers.

제가 개막식에서 오륜기를 들고 나갈 사람 중 한 명으로

뽑혔다는 연락을 받았습니다.

I replied that surely, this was a case of mistaken identity,

저는 분명히 신원 오인의 문제 같다고 대답했니다.

because I'm as far as you can get from being an athlete.

왜냐하면 저는 운동이랑은 거리가 머니까요.

Actually, I wasn't even sure that I could go around the stadium

사실 워커 없이 그 넓은 운동장을

without a walker.

I was told that this was no laughing matter.

This would be the first time

that only women would carry the Olympic flag.

Five women, representing five continents,

and three Olympic gold medal winners.

My first question was, naturally:

What was I going to wear?

"A uniform," she said,

and asked for my measurements.

I had a vision of myself in a fluffy anorak,

looking like the Michelin Man.

뚱뚱한 파카를 입고 있는 저의 모습을 상상했지요.

2월 중순쯤 되어서는,

By the middle of February, I found myself in Turin,

저는 토리노에 있었고, 그곳에 관중들은 열광적으로

where enthusiastic crowds cheered

when any of the 80 Olympic teams was in the street.

Those athletes had sacrificed everything to compete in the games.

They all deserved to win, but there's the element of luck.

A speck of snow, an inch of ice, the force of the wind

can determine the result of a race or a game.

게임이나 경주 결과에 영향을 미치게 됩니다.

However, what matters most, more than training or luck, is the heart.

하지만, 훈련과 운보다 더 중요한 것은 바로 가슴입니다.

Only a fearless and determined heart will get the gold medal.

오직 용감하고 결연한 가슴을 가진 자 만이 금메달을 목에 걸 수 있습니다.

It is all about passion.

단연 열정이 있어야 합니다.

The streets of Turin were covered with red posters

토리노의 거리는 올림픽 슬로건이 쓰여진

announcing the slogan of the Olympics:

빨간 포스터들로 가득 차 있었습니다.

"Passion lives here."

"이 곳에 열정이 숨쉬고 있습니다." 항상 그러지 않나요?

Isn't it always true?

Heart is what drives us and determines our fate.

우리의 가슴이야말로 우리를 운명의 순간으로 데려다주는 것입니다.

제가 책을 쓸 때도 바로 그런 가슴을 가진 캐릭터가 필요합니다.

That is what I need for my characters in my books:

a passionate heart.

열정적인 가슴말이죠.

I need mavericks, dissidents, adventurers, outsiders and rebels,

저는 독불장군, 반항자, 모험가, 아웃사이더, 반역자와 같이

who ask questions, bend the rules and take risks.

질문을 던지고 규칙을 어기며 위험을 감수하는 캐릭터가 필요합니다.

People like all of you in this room.

이 곳에 모인 여러분들과 같이

상식적이고 친절한 사람들은 흥미로운 캐릭터가 될 수 없습니다.

Nice people with common sense do not make interesting characters.

(Laughter)

They only make good former spouses.

In the greenroom of the stadium, I met the other flag bearers:

경기장 안 녹색 방에서, 저는 다른 기수들을 만났습니다.

three athletes and the actresses Susan Sarandon and Sophia Loren.

Also, two women with passionate hearts:

그리고 열정적인 가슴을 가진 두 명의 여성이 있었습니다.

Wangari Maathai, the Nobel Prize winner from Kenya

왕가리 마타이, 케냐에서 온 노벨상 수상자입니다.

who has planted 30 million trees,

and by doing so, she has changed the soil, the weather, in some places in Africa,

In the greenroom, I received my uniform.

It was not the kind of outfit that I normally wear,

but it was far from the Michelin Man suit that I had anticipated.

제가 걱정했던 미쉐린맨 같은 옷은 아니었습니다.

Not bad, really.

I looked like a refrigerator.

마치 냉장고 같아 보였지요.

But so did most of the flag bearers, except Sophia Loren,

the universal symbol of beauty and passion.

미모와 열정의 상징이시죠.

Sophia is over 70 and she looks great.

소피아는 70세가 넘었지만 아직도 멋지십니다.

She's sexy, slim and tall, with a deep tan.

그녀는 섹시하고,날씬하고, 키도 크고, 태닝된 구릿빛 피부도 아주 멋지죠.

Now, how can you have a deep tan and have no wrinkles?

아니 어떻게 태닝을 하고도 주름살이 하나도 없을 수 있는거죠?

I don't know.

전 모르겠네요.

어떤 텔레비젼 인터뷰에서 "어쩜 그렇게 아직도 좋아 보이세요?"라는 질문에

When asked in a TV interview how could she look so good,

she replied, "Posture."

그녀가 말하길, "자세죠.저는 등을 항상 펴고 다녀요."

"My back is always straight,

and I don't make old people's noises."

"그리고 늙은이들 소리를 안 내죠"

(Laughter)

So there you have some free advice

자, 뷰티팁 하나 공짜로 드렸습니다.

지구에서 가장 예쁜 여성으로부터 말이죠.

from one of the most beautiful women on earth:

no grunting, no coughing, no wheezing,

투덜대는 소리, 기침소리, 재채기 소리,

no talking to yourselves, no farting.

혼잣말하는 소리, 방구소리 다 안 됩니다.

그녀가 정확히 이렇게 이야기해 준 것은 아니지만요.

Well, she didn't say that, exactly.

(Laughter)

At some point around midnight,

한 자정 쯤 돼서,

we were summoned to the wings of the stadium,

저희는 경기장의 윙 부분에 소집되었습니다.

and the loudspeakers announced the Olympic flag,

확성기가 올림픽 국기를 발표하고, 음악이 시작되었습니다.

and the music started --

by the way, the same music that starts here, the "Aida" march.

아 그러고보니 이 곳에서도 시작할 때 나오는 음악이군요.

개선 행진곡이죠.

Sophia Loren was right in front of me.

소피아 로렌이 제 바로 앞에 섰습니다. 저보다 한 30cm 더 크시죠.

She's a foot taller than I am, not counting the poofy hair.

붕 띄우신 머리를 제외하고도 말이죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

She walked elegantly, like a giraffe on the African savanna,

그녀는 마지 아프리카 대초원의 기린처럼 엘레강스하게 걷기 시작했습니다.

holding the flag on her shoulder.

깃발을 어깨에 올린 채...저는 뒤에서 조깅 중이었습니다.

I jogged behind --

(Laughter)

(웃음)

on my tiptoes, holding the flag on my extended arm,

까치발을 들고 깃발을 든 손은 이렇게 쭉 뻗은 채 말이죠.

so that my head was actually under the damn flag.

그래서 제 머리는 그 망할 깃발에 다 가려졌습니다.

(Laughter)

All the cameras were, of course, on Sophia.

모든 카메라들은, 물론, 소피아를 찍고 있었죠.

That was fortunate for me,

because in most press photos, I appear too --

The best four minutes of my entire life were those in the Olympic stadium.

제 인생에 있어 최고의 순간은

올림픽 경기장에서의 4분, 바로 그 때입니다.

저희 남편은 이 얘길 들으면 기분이 상한다고 합니다.

My husband is offended when I say this,

although I have explained to him that what we do in private

제가 아무리 우리끼리 개인적으로 은밀히 하는 건

usually takes less than four minutes --

4분도 안 걸리기 때문이라고 설명을 해줘도 말입니다.

(Laughter)

so he shouldn't take it personally.

그러니 그가 개인적으로 받아드리지 않았으면 하네요.

(Laughter)

I have all the press clippings of those four magnificent minutes

저는 그 아름다웠던 4분의 언론 사진을 모두 가지고 있습니다.

because I don't want to forget them

왜냐하면 제가 늙어서 뇌세포가 파괴되어

when old age destroys my brain cells.

그 때의 기억을 잃고 싶지 않아서이죠.

I want to carry in my heart forever the key word of the Olympics:

저는 올림픽의 키워드를 가슴 속에 항상 간직하고 싶습니다.

열정.

passion.

그 열정에 대한 이야기를 해드리겠습니다.

So here's a tale of passion.

The year is 1998,

때는 1998년, 콩고의 툿시족 난민들을 위한

the place is a prison camp for Tutsi refugees in Congo.

교도소에서 일어난 일입니다.

By the way, 80 percent of all refugees and displaced people in the world

그 곳 난민의 80%는

are women and girls.

여성과 소녀들이었습니다.

우리는 이 곳을 죽음의 수용소라고 부릅니다.

We can call this place in Congo a death camp,

because those who are not killed will die of disease or starvation.

왜냐하면 죽음을 당하지 않은 이들도 전염병과 기아로 모두 죽게 되기 때문입니다.

The protagonists of this story are a young woman, Rose Mapendo,

이 이야기의 주인공은

로즈 마펜도라는 젊은 여성과 그녀의 아이들입니다.

and her children.

She's pregnant and a widow.

그녀는 임신 중이었으며 과부였습니다.

군인들은 그녀에게 남편이 고문을 받고

Soldiers had forced her to watch as her husband was tortured and killed.

죽는 모습을 보도록 강요했습니다.

Somehow she manages to keep her seven children alive,

그녀는 운 좋게도 그녀의 7명의 아이들과 함께 살아남았습니다.

and a few months later, she gives birth to premature twins,

two tiny little boys.

When the soldiers burst in her cell to rape her oldest daughter,

그녀는 첫째 딸의 손을 잡고 놓아주지 않았습니다.

she grabs hold of her and refuses to let go,

그녀 머리에 총이 겨누어져 있었지만 말이죠.

even when they hold a gun to her head.

Somehow, the family survives for 16 months,

그 후에도 어떻게 그녀의 가족은 16개월 동안 살아남았습니다.

and then, by extraordinary luck

그리고는, 기이한 운과 그녀의 열정적인 가슴 덕에

and the passionate heart of a young American man, Sasha Chanoff,

샤샤 캐노프라는 젊은 미국인을 만나게 됩니다.

who manages to put her in a US rescue plane,

Rose Mapendo and her nine children end up in Phoenix, Arizona,

I don't make them up;

이런 주인공들을 제 머리 속에서 만들어 낼 필요가 없습니다.

there's no need for that.

제 주위를 둘러보면 어디에서든 찾을 수 있죠.

I look around, and I see them everywhere.

I have worked with women and for women all my life.

저는 여성들과 함께 여성들을 위해 평생을 일했습니다.

I know them well.

저는 그들에 대해 잘 알고 있습니다.

I was born in ancient times, at the end of the world,

저는 고대에 태어났습니다. 세상이 끝나갈 때 쯤,

in a patriarchal Catholic and conservative family.

가부장적이고 보수적인 카톨릭 가정에서요.

No wonder that by age five, I was a raging feminist --

다섯 살 때부터 격렬한 페미니스트가 된 것은 당연한 일이었을지도 모릅니다.

although the term had not reached Chile yet,

하지만 페미니스트라는 용어가 아직 칠레에 들어오지 않았을 터라

so nobody knew what the heck was wrong with me.

I would soon find out that there was a high price to pay for my freedom

저는 자유를 위해, 또 가부장제에 대해 의문을 품기 위해서

그 대가를 치뤄야 한다는 것을 배웠습니다.

and for questioning the patriarchy.

But I was happy to pay it,

하지만 저는 기꺼이 그 대가를 치루고 싶었습니다. 왜냐하면

because for every blow that I received,

I was able to deliver two.

그들이 결정타를 한번 치면 저는 두배로 돌려줄 수 있었기 때문입니다.

Once, when my daughter Paula was in her twenties,

she said to me that feminism was dated, that I should move on.

We had a memorable fight.

그날 저흰 기억에 남을 싸움을 했지요. 페미니즘이 구식이라고요?

Feminism is dated?

Yes, for privileged women like my daughter and all of us here today,

맞는 말입니다, 제 딸이나 여기 오신 여러분들처럼 특권을 가진 여성들에게는 말이죠.

but not for most of our sisters in the rest of the world,

하지만 나머지 세계의 여성들에게는 그렇지 않습니다.

조기 결혼을 강요 당하고,

who are still forced into premature marriage,

prostitution, forced labor.

매춘에 강제 노동까지...

They have children that they don't want or they cannot feed.

그녀들은 원치 않거나 돌봐줄 수 없는 아이들을 키워야 합니다.

They have no control over their bodies or their lives.

그녀들은 자신들의 몸, 인생에 대한 권한이 없습니다.

또 교육도 받을 수 없고 자유도 없습니다.

They have no education and no freedom.

They are raped, beaten up and sometimes killed with impunity.

그녀들은 강간과 폭행을 당하며, 법으로 보호 받지도 못한 채 죽기도 합니다.

For most Western young women of today,

요즘은 서부에 사는 젊은 여성에게

being called a "feminist" is an insult.

페미니스트라고 부르는 것은 모욕입니다.

Feminism has never been sexy,

페미니즘을 섹시하다고 느끼는 사람은 없었습니다. 하지만 보장합니다.

but let me assure you that it never stopped me from flirting,

그 이유로 제가 남자들을 유혹하는 걸 멈춘적은 없습니다.

and I have seldom suffered from lack of men.

Feminism is not dead, by no means.

페미니즘은 절대, 죽지 않았습니다.

It has evolved.

If you don't like the term,

change it, for Goddess' sake.

바꾸세요! 제발.

Call it "Aphrodite" or "Venus" or "bimbo" or whatever you want.

아프로디테, 비너스, 백치미인, 원하시는 걸로요.

The name doesn't matter,

명칭은 상관 없습니다.

as long as we understand what it is about, and we support it.

우리가 이해할 수 있다면 우리는 지지할 것입니다.

열정에 관한 또 다른 이야기가 있습니다. 슬픈 이야기지요.

So here's another tale of passion, and this is a sad one.

The place is a small women's clinic in a village in Bangladesh.

방글라데시의 작은 마음에 있는 여성전용 클리닉에서 있었던 일입니다.

The year is 2005.

때는 2005년.

Jenny is a young American dental hygienist

제니는 3주의 휴가동안

who has gone to the clinic as a volunteer during her three-week vacation.

그 곳으로 자원봉사를 온

미국인 치과 위생사였습니다.

She's prepared to clean teeth,

그녀가 일을 하려고 준비를 하던 중,

but when she gets there,

이 곳은 의사도 치과의사도 없는,

she finds out that there are no doctors, no dentists,

파리들만 들끓고 있는 곳임을 알게되었습니다.

and the clinic is just a hut full of flies.

Outside, there is a line of women

who have waited several hours to be treated.

The first patient is in excruciating pain

because she has several rotten molars.

Jenny realizes that the only solution is to pull out the bad teeth.

She's not licensed for that; she has never done it.

She risks a lot and she's terrified.

That day the hygienist pulls out many more teeth.

The next morning, when she comes again to the so-called clinic,

her first patient is waiting for her with her husband.

Jenny is horrified at what she has done.

Millions of women live like this today.

They are the poorest of the poor.

Although women do two-thirds of the world's labor,

they own less than one percent of the world's assets.

They are paid less than men for the same work, if they're paid at all,

and they remain vulnerable because they have no economic independence,

and they are constantly threatened by exploitation,

violence and abuse.

It is a fact that giving women education, work,

the ability to control their own income, inherit and own property

수입을 스스로 통제할 수 있는 능력,

재산을 물러받는 일이 사회의 이득임은 당연한 사실입니다.

benefits the society.

If a woman is empowered,

만약 여성에게 권한을 부여한다면,

her children and her family will be better off.

그녀의 자식들과 가정은 더욱 나아질 것입니다.

If families prosper, the village prospers,

만약 가정이 번성하면, 마을이 번성하고,

and eventually, so does the whole country.

결국 국가가 번성할 것입니다.

Wangari Maathai goes to a village in Kenya.

왕가리 마타이가 케냐의 한 마을로 갔습니다.

She talks with the women and explains that the land is barren

그녀는 그곳 여성들에게, 나무를 너무 많이 베어 팔아서

because they have cut and sold the trees.

땅이 불모지가 되었다고 설명했습니다.

그녀는 여성들에게 나무를 심고 물을 주라고 하였습니다.

She gets the women to plant new trees and water them,

drop by drop.

In a matter of five or six years, they have a forest,

the soil is enriched, and the village is saved.

기름진 토지가 생기고 마을은 살아났습니다.

The poorest and most backward societies

가장 가난하고 퇴보하는 사회에서는

are always those that put women down.

Yet this obvious truth is ignored by governments

하지만 이런 명백한 사실들을 정부에서는 모른 체 합니다.

and also by philanthropy.

박애주의도 여성을 무시하지요.

For every dollar given to a women's program,

20 dollars are given to men's programs.

Women are 51 percent of humankind.

Empowering them will change everything,

In any war today, most of the casualties are civilians,

오늘날 모든 전쟁의 피해자는 거의 일반 시민들입니다.

mainly women and children.

주로 여성과 아이들이지요. 이 둘은 항상 나란히 피해를 입습니다.

They are collateral damage.

Men run the world,

남성들은 세계를 지배하고, 그 안의 혼란을 봅니다.

and look at the mess we have.

What kind of world do we want?

우린 어떤 세상을 원하나요?

This is a fundamental question that most of us are asking.

이건 우리 모두가 던지는 아주 근본적인 질문입니다.

현존하는 세계의 질서에 참여하는 것이 맞는 걸까요?

Does it make sense to participate in the existing world order?

We want a world where life is preserved

우리는 생명을 보호받을 수 있는,

and the quality of life is enriched for everybody,

모두의 생명이 존중 받을 수 있는 세상에 살고싶습니다.

not only for the privileged.

특권을 가진 자들만이 아닌.

1월에 UC버클리 도서관에서 열린 페르난도 보테로의

In January, I saw an exhibit of Fernando Botero's paintings

작품전시회에 다녀왔습니다.

at the UC Berkeley library.

No museum or gallery in the United States,

미국의 어느 박물관이나 갤러리도

except for the New York gallery that carries Botero's work,

뉴욕 갤러리를 제외하고, 보테로의 작품을

has dared to show the paintings,

감히 전시할 용기를 내지 못합니다. 왜냐하면

because the theme is the Abu Ghraib prison.

아브그라이브 교도소의 주제를 다루고 있기 때문입니다.

그의 그림은 고문과 권력의 악용을 주제로한 그림들로써

They are huge paintings of torture and abuse of power,

아주 크게 보테로 스타일로 그려졌습니다.

in the voluminous Botero style.

I have not been able to get those images out of my mind

저는 아직도 그 그림의 형상들을 제 머리 속에서,

or my heart.

제 가슴에서 지울 수가 없습니다.

What I fear most is power with impunity.

제가 가장 두려워하는 것은 처벌받지 않는 권력입니다.

I fear abuse of power, and the power to abuse.

저는 권력의 악용, 또 악용하려는 권력을 두러워합니다.

In our species, the alpha males define reality,

우리 종족들에게는 알파 남성이 현실이고,

and force the rest of the pack to accept that reality

힘으로 나머지들에게 그 현실을 받아들이게 하여

and follow the rules.

규칙을 따르게 합니다.

The rules change all the time, but they always benefit them,

그 규칙들은 항상 변합니다, 하지만 어떻게든 그들에게 이익이 되지요.

and in this case, the trickle-down effect, which does not work in economics,

Abuse trickles down from the top of the ladder to the bottom.

Women and children, especially the poor, are at the bottom.

Even the most destitute of men have someone they can abuse --

가장 빈곤한 남성조차도 학대할 상대는 있다는 것이지요-

a woman or a child.

바로 여성과 어린이입니다.

I'm fed up with the power that a few exert over the many

저는 소수의 권력이 성별,수입,인종,계급을 통해

through gender, income, race and class.

권한의 힘을 발휘하는 것에 지쳤습니다.

저는 이제 우리 문명에 아주 근본적인 변화가

I think that the time is ripe to make fundamental changes

in our civilization.

생겨야 할 때라고 생각합니다.

But for real change, we need feminine energy

하지만 진심으로 변화를 원한다면, 이 세상을 경영하기 위해

in the management of the world.

우리는 여성의 힘이 필요합니다.

We need a critical number of women in positions of power,

우리는 권력의 자리에 오를 중요한 여성들이 필요합니다.

and we need to nurture the feminine energy in men.

또 우리는 남성들에게 여성의 힘을 양육해야 합니다.

I'm talking about men with young minds, of course.

당연히 젊은 남성들을 이야기하는 것입니다.

Old guys are hopeless; we have to wait for them to die off.

늙은이들은 희망이 없어요, 그냥 죽을 때까지 기다려야 합니다.
