One of the most common ways of dividing the world

अगर संसार को बांटे तो सबसे सामान्य विभाजन है

is into those who believe

एक जो ईश्वर को मानते हैं

and those who don't --

और दूसरे जो नहीं मानते--

into the religious and the atheists.

यानि कि आस्तिक और नास्तिक!

And for the last decade or so,

और पिछ्ले कुछ दशको से

it's been quite clear

ये साफ़ है कि

what being an atheist means.

नास्तिक होने का मतलब क्या है।

There have been some very vocal atheists

कुछ काफ़ी स्पष्टवादी नास्तिक हुए हैं

who've pointed out,

जो ये कहते हैं कि

not just that religion is wrong,

धर्म केवल गलत ही नहीं

but that it's ridiculous.

बल्कि बेतुका भी है।

These people, many of whom have lived in North Oxford,

ये लोग, जिनमे से कई उत्तरी ओ़क्स्फ़ोर्ड मे रहे हैं

have argued --

ये तर्क देते हैं

they've argued that believing in God

कि ईश्वर मे विश्वास करना

is akin to believing in fairies

परियों की कहानियों को सच मानने जैसा है

and essentially that the whole thing

और सही मायने मे ये सब

is a childish game.

एक बचकाने खेल जैसा है।

Now I think it's too easy.

अब मेरे हिसाब से ये कुछ ज्यादा ही सरल है.

I think it's too easy

मेरे विचार से इस तरह से

to dismiss the whole of religion that way.

धर्म की पूरी तरह से उपेक्षा करना बहुत आसान है.

And it's as easy as shooting fish in a barrel.

ये इतना आसान है जितना गंजे के सर के जुयें मारना.

And what I'd like to inaugurate today

और आज मै जिसका उदघाटन करने जा रहा हूं

is a new way of being an atheist --

वो है नास्तिक बनने का एक नया तरीका --

if you like, a new version of atheism

और अगर आप चाहें तो अनीश्‍वरवाद के इस नये रूप को

we could call Atheism 2.0.

अनीश्वर्वाद २.० कह सकते हैं।

Now what is Atheism 2.0?

अब ये अनीश्वरवाद २.० है क्या?

Well it starts from a very basic premise:

वैसे तो ये बहुत सीधी सी बात से शुरु होता है.

of course, there's no God.

ये माना कि कोई भगवान नही है.

Of course, there are no deities or supernatural spirits

माना कि कोई देवता या अलौकिक शक्ति नही है

or angels, etc.

और ना ही फरिश्ते वगैरा।

Now let's move on; that's not the end of the story,

तो ठीक है पर अब इससे आगे बढा जाये, क्योंकि कहानी यहां खतम नही हुई है,

that's the very, very beginning.

बल्कि ये तो एकदम शुरुआत है।

I'm interested in the kind of constituency

अब मै खासकर उन लोगो के बारे मे कहना चाहूंगा

that thinks something along these lines:

जो कुछ इस तरह सोचते हैं:

that thinks, "I can't believe in any of this stuff.

जैसे, "मैं ये सब कुछ नहीं मानता.

I can't believe in the doctrines.

मै किसी सिद्दान्त को नहीं मानता.

I don't think these doctrines are right.

मुझे नही लगता कि ये सिद्धान्त सही हैं.

But," a very important but, "I love Christmas carols.

लेकिन, एक बात है, "मुझे त्योहार मनाना बहुत पसन्द है.

I really like the art of Mantegna.

मुझे रंगोली की सजावाट बहुत अच्छी लगती है

I really like looking at old churches.

और पुराने मन्दिर और चर्च भी बहुत सुहावने लगते है

I really like turning the pages of the Old Testament."

मुझे गीता/बाइबल के उपदेश भी अच्छे लगते है"

Whatever it may be,

या जो भी ऐसा कुछ,

you know the kind of thing I'm talking about --

आप समझ गये ना मै क्या कहना चाह रहा हूं--

people who are attracted to the ritualistic side,

लोगो को धर्म का सांस्कृतिक,

the moralistic, communal side of religion,

नैतिक और सामजिक पहलू तो आकर्षित लगता है

but can't bear the doctrine.

लेकिन वो सिद्दान्तो को नही झेल सकते.

Until now, these people have faced a rather unpleasant choice.

अब तक इन लोगो के पास बहुत ही अप्रिय विकल्प रहा है.

It's almost as though either you accept the doctrine

और ये ऐसा है कि या तो आप सिद्दान्तों को माने

and then you can have all the nice stuff,

और तब आप इन सारी कलात्मक चीजों का आनन्द ले सकते है,

or you reject the doctrine and

या फ़िर आप इन सिद्धान्तों को अस्वीकार करें और

you're living in some kind of spiritual wasteland

एक आध्यात्मिक तौर पर बंजर जैसी जगह मे रहें

under the guidance of CNN and Walmart.

जिसे सी एन एन और वालमार्ट चलाते हैं.

So that's a sort of tough choice.

तो ये वाकई एक कठिन चुनाव है.

I don't think we have to make that choice.

मेरे विचार से हमे चुनाव करने की जरूरत ही नही है.

I think there is an alternative.

एक दूसरा रास्ता है.

I think there are ways --

मेरे खयाल से धर्म से कुछ (अच्छा) चुराने के--

and I'm being both very respectful and completely impious --

अब मैं एक साथ बहुत भद्र भी बन रहा हूं और पापी भी--

of stealing from religions.

कई तरीके हैं.

If you don't believe in a religion,

और अगर आप धर्म मे विश्वास नही करते

there's nothing wrong with picking and mixing,

तो धर्म के अच्छे गुण चुनकर कुछ अपने विचारों से

with taking out the best sides of religion.

मिलाने मे कुछ गलत नही है.

And for me, atheism 2.0

और मेरे लिये, ये नया अनीश्वरवाद

is about both, as I say,

दोनो पहलुओ के लिये है, जैसा कि मैने कहा,

a respectful and an impious way

एक आदरपूर्ण और अभद्र तरीके से,

of going through religions and saying, "What here could we use?"

धर्म की जांच करना और सोचना," यहां हमारे काम की कोइ चीज है क्या?"

The secular world is full of holes.

इस लौकिक दुनिया मे कई कमियां हैं.

We have secularized badly, I would argue.

और मेरे हिसाब से हम बहुत बुरी तरह से सांसारिक हो गये हैं।

And a thorough study of religion

और यदि हम धर्म का बारीकी से अध्ययन करें

could give us all sorts of insights

तो हमे जीवन के कई उलझे हुये

into areas of life that are not going too well.

पहलुओं के बारे में काफ़ी ज्ञान मिलेगा.

And I'd like to run through a few of these today.

और आज मै उनमे से कुछ के बारे मे बात करूंगा.

I'd like to kick off by looking at education.

चलिये शुरुआत शिक्षा से करते हैं.

Now education is a field

शिक्षा एक ऐसा क्षेत्र है

the secular world really believes in.

जिसमे लौकिक दुनिया बहुत आस्था रखती है.

When we think about how we're going to make the world a better place,

जब भी हम दुनिया को बेहतर बनाने की सोचते है,

we think education; that's where we put a lot of money.

हम शिक्षा के बारे मे ही सोचते हैं और उसपे बहुत खर्चा भी करते हैं.

Education is going to give us, not only commercial skills, industrial skills,

शिक्षा से हमें वाणिच्यिक, औद्योगिक योग्यता तो मिलेगी ही,

it's also going to make us better people.

ये हमे बेहतर इन्सान भी बनायेगी.

You know the kind of thing a commencement address is, and graduation ceremonies,

आप तो जानते ही है किसी उदघाटन समारोह या दीक्षान्त समारोह मे,

those lyrical claims

कितने काव्यात्मक ढंग से शिक्षा

that education, the process of education -- particularly higher education --

और पूरी शैक्षिक पद्धति -- खासकर उच्च शिक्षा की--

will make us into nobler and better human beings.

हमे बेहतर और महान इन्सान बनाने की क्षमता का गुणगान किया जाता है.

That's a lovely idea.

ये कितना सुन्दर विचार है.

Interesting where it came from.

और इस विचार की शुरुआत भी काफ़ी रोचक है.

In the early 19th century,

19वीं शताब्दी की शुरुआत में

church attendance in Western Europe

पश्चिमी युरोप में चर्च मे आने वालों

started sliding down very, very sharply, and people panicked.

की संख्या बडी तेज़ी से घटना शुरु हो गयी, इतनी कि लोग घबरा गये.

They asked themselves the following question.

उन्होने अपने आप से ये सवाल पूछे.

They said, where are people going to find the morality,

उन्होने कहा, कि अब लोग नैतिकता कहां से सीखेंगे,

where are they going to find guidance,

उन्हें मार्गदर्शन कहां से मिलेगा,

and where are they going to find sources of consolation?

और वो सांत्वना की खोज मे कहां जायेंगे?

And influential voices came up with one answer.

और फ़िर एक प्रभावशाली आवाज़ में उत्तर आया.

They said culture.

उत्तर था : संस्कृति.

It's to culture that we should look

हमें मार्गदर्शन, सांत्वना और नैतिकता के लिये

for guidance, for consolation, for morality.

अपनी संस्कृति का सहारा लेना चाहिये.

Let's look to the plays of Shakespeare,

आप शेक्सपीयर के नाटक देख लीजिये या

the dialogues of Plato, the novels of Jane Austen.

प्लूटो के संवाद या जेन आस्टिन के उपन्यास.

In there, we'll find a lot of the truths

इन सबमें आपको वो सारा सत्य मिलेगा

that we might previously have found in the Gospel of Saint John.

जो पहले हमने सेंट जोन के उपदेशों मे पाया था.

Now I think that's a very beautiful idea and a very true idea.

अब मुझे लगता है कि ये बहुत ही सुन्दर और सच्चा विचार है.

They wanted to replace scripture with culture.

वे ग्रन्थों को संस्कृति से प्रतिस्थापित करना चाहते थे.

And that's a very plausible idea.

और ये वाकई बहुत ही यथार्थवादी विचार है.

It's also an idea that we have forgotten.

और हम इसी विचार को भूल गये हैं

If you went to a top university --

यदि आप एक उत्कृष्ट विश्वविद्यालय मे पढे हैं

let's say you went to Harvard or Oxford or Cambridge --

मान लो, हार्वार्ड या ओक्सफ़ोर्ड या केम्ब्रिज --

and you said, "I've come here

और ये कहते हैं, "मैं यहां

because I'm in search of morality, guidance and consolation;

नैतिकता, मार्गदर्शन और सान्त्वना की खोज मे आया हूं;

I want to know how to live,"

मै जीने का सही तरीका जानना चाहता हूं."

they would show you the way to the insane asylum.

तो लोग आपको पागलखाने का रास्ता दिखायेंगे!

This is simply not what our grandest and best institutes of higher learning

हमारे सबसे भव्य और श्रेष्ठ संस्थान भी ये बताना

are in the business of.

जरूरी नहीं समझते.

Why? They don't think we need it.

क्यॊं? उन्हें लगता है कि हमे इसकी जरूरत ही नही है.

They don't think we are in an urgent need of assistance.

उन्हें नही लगता कि हमे तुरन्त मदद की जरुरत है.

They see us as adults, rational adults.

उनके हिसाब से हम सब वयस्क हैं, बुद्धिमान वयस्क!

What we need is information.

हमें तो बस सूचना चाहिये.

We need data, we don't need help.

और कोइ सहायता नहीं, बस आंकडे.

Now religions start from a very different place indeed.

जबकि धर्म एकदम अलग जगह से शुरु होता है.

All religions, all major religions,

सभी धर्म, सारे बड़े धर्म,

at various points call us children.

अनेक बार हमे "बच्चा" कहकर संबोधित करते हैं.

And like children,

और ये मानते हैं कि बच्चों की तरह ही

they believe that we are in severe need of assistance.

हमे भी मदद की गंभीर जरुरत है.

We're only just holding it together.

हम बस किसी तरह काम चला रहे हैं.

Perhaps this is just me, maybe you.

शायद सिर्फ़ मैं ही या शायद आप भी.

But anyway, we're only just holding it together.

पर जो भी हो बस किसी तरह सब काम चला रहे हैं.

And we need help. Of course, we need help.

और हम सबको सहायता चाहिये. वाकई हमें मदद चाहिये.

And so we need guidance and we need didactic learning.

और इसलिये हमे मार्गदर्शन और उपदेशों की जरुरत है.

You know, in the 18th century in the U.K.,

18वीं शताब्दी मे U.K. में

the greatest preacher, greatest religious preacher, was a man called John Wesley,

जोन वेस्ले नामक बहुत महान धार्मिक उपदेशक हुआ

who went up and down this country delivering sermons,

जो पूरे देश मे घूम घूम कर लोगों को उपदेश देता और

advising people how they could live.

उन्हें जीने का सही तरीका बताता.

He delivered sermons on the duties of parents to their children

उसने माता-पिता के बच्चों के प्रति और बच्चों के माता-पिता के प्रति

and children to their parents,

क्या कर्तव्य है, अमीर का गरीब और निर्धन का धनवान के प्रति क्या कर्तव्य है

the duties of the rich to the poor and the poor to the rich.

इन सब का उपदेश दिया.

He was trying to tell people how they should live

उसने लोगों को धर्म प्रचार के पारम्परिक तरीके यानि कि

through the medium of sermons,

अपने उपदेशों के माध्यम से

the classic medium of delivery of religions.

जीने का सही तरीका बताने की कोशिश की.

Now we've given up with the idea of sermons.

अब हमने उपदेश देने वाला विचार तो छोड ही दिया है.

If you said to a modern liberal individualist,

अगर आप एक आधुनिक, उदारतावादी व्यक्ति से कहेंगे,

"Hey, how about a sermon?"

"अरे सुनिये, मैं आपको एक उपदेश देना चाहता हूं?"

they'd go, "No, no. I don't need one of those.

वो कहेंगे, " नहीं नहीं, मुझे उपदेश-वुपदेश नही चाहिये.

I'm an independent, individual person."

मैं एक स्वतन्त्र व्यक्ति-विशेष हूं."

What's the difference between a sermon

एक उपदेश और व्याख्यान, जो कि हमारा आधुनिक धर्मनिरपेक्ष तरीका है

and our modern, secular mode of delivery, the lecture?

मे क्या अन्तर है?

Well a sermon wants to change your life

एक उपदेश आपका जीवन बदलना चाहता है और

and a lecture wants to give you a bit of information.

एक व्याख्यान आपको बस थोडी जानकारी देना चाहता है.

And I think we need to get back to that sermon tradition.

और मुझे लगता है कि हमें उपदेश की प्रथा को वापस लाना चाहिये.

The tradition of sermonizing is hugely valuable,

उपदेश की प्रथा अत्यधिक मूल्यवान है,

because we are in need of guidance,

क्यों कि हमें मार्गदर्शन,

morality and consolation --

नैतिकता और सांत्वना की सख्त जरूरत है --

and religions know that.

और धर्म ये बात जानते हैं.

Another point about education:

शिक्षा के बारे मे एक और बात:

we tend to believe in the modern secular world

इस आधुनिक लौकिक दुनिया मे हमें ऐसा लगता है

that if you tell someone something once, they'll remember it.

कि यदि हम एक बात किसी को एक बार बतायेंगे तो वो उसे याद रखेगा.

Sit them in a classroom, tell them about Plato

कक्षा मे बिठा के, बीस साल की आयु मे उन्हें, आप प्लूटो के बारे मे बताइये,

at the age of 20, send them out for a career in management consultancy for 40 years,

फ़िर 40 साल की आयु मे उन्हें प्रबंधन सलाहकर बनने भेज दीजिये

and that lesson will stick with them.

और तब भी वो पाठ उन्हें याद रहेगा.

Religions go, "Nonsense.

धर्म कहते हैं, "बकवास.

You need to keep repeating the lesson 10 times a day.

तुम्हे दिन मे 10 बार अपने पाठ को दोहराने की जरूरत है.

So get on your knees and repeat it."

तो अपने घुटनों पे बैठो और अपना पाठ दोहराओ."

That's what all religions tell us:

सारे धर्म हमें यही करने को कहते हैं:

"Get on you knees and repeat it 10 or 20 or 15 times a day."

तो झुको और रोज़ 10, या 20 या 15 बार अपना पाठ दोहराओ."

Otherwise our minds are like sieves.

नही तो हमारे छ्लनी जैसे दिमाग से सब निकल जायेगा.

So religions are cultures of repetition.

तो धर्म मे पुनरावृत्ति का चलन है.

They circle the great truths again and again and again.

वो वही महासत्य बार बार घुमा फ़िरा के कहते रहते हैं.

We associate repetition with boredom.

पर पुनरावृत्ति से हमें बोरियत होती है.

"Give us the new," we're always saying.

हमे हमेशा कुछ नया चाहिये.

"The new is better than the old."

नया हमेशा पुराने से अच्छा है.

If I said to you, "Okay, we're not going to have new TED.

अगर मै आपसे कहूं," ठीक है भाई, आज से नया TED नही होगा.

We're just going to run through all the old ones

हम बस वही पुराने TED TALK बार बार दोहरायेंगे और

and watch them five times because they're so true.

और उसे पांच बार देखेंगे क्यूंकि कि वो सब कितने सच्चे हैं.

We're going to watch Elizabeth Gilbert five times

हम एलिज़ाबेथ गिल्बर्ट को पांच बार देखेंगे

because what she says is so clever," you'd feel cheated.

क्योंकि वो जो कहतीं हैं वो बहुत अच्छा है," आप छला हुआ महसूस करेंगे.

Not so if you're adopting a religious mindset.

लेकिन अगर आप धार्मिक विचारधारा अपनायेंगे तो ऐसा नही होगा.

The other things that religions do

धर्म एक और काम करता है,

is to arrange time.

और वो है समय व्यवस्था.

All the major religions give us calendars.

सभी बडे धर्मों ने हमे केलेन्डर दिये है.

What is a calendar?

केलेन्डर क्या है?

A calendar is a way of making sure that across the year

केलेन्डर यह निश्चित करने का एक तरीका है कि आपको पूरे साल के दौरान

you will bump into certain very important ideas.

कुछ महत्वपूर्ण विचारों का ध्यान रखें.

In the Catholic chronology, Catholic calendar,

केथोलिक केलेन्डर मे,

at the end of March you will think about St. Jerome

हर मार्च के अन्त मे आप सन्त जेरोमी के बारे मे सोचेंगे

and his qualities of humility and goodness

और उनके सद्‍गुणों, सदाचरण और

and his generosity to the poor.

गरीबों के प्रति दयाभाव के बारे मे सोचेंगे. और ये कोइ इत्तेफ़ाक से नहीं होगा,

You won't do that by accident; you will do that because you are guided to do that.

बल्कि इसलिये होगा क्यों कि आपको ऐसा करने को कहा गया है.

Now we don't think that way.

पर अब हम ऐसा नही सोचते.

In the secular world we think, "If an idea is important, I'll bump into it.

धर्मनिरपेक्ष संसार मे हम मानते हैं, "अगर कोई बात जरूरी है तो हम उस पर अमल करेंगे.

I'll just come across it."

हम इसे खुद ही समझने की कोशिश करेंगे."

Nonsense, says the religious world view.

लेकिन धार्मिक लोग इसे बकवास मानेंगे.

Religious view says we need calendars, we need to structure time,

धार्मिक मत के हिसाब से हमें कलेन्डर चाहिये, समयबद्धता चाहिये,

we need to synchronize encounters.

और इसी के हिसाब से हम किसी बात पर विचार करेंगे.

This comes across also

और ये तब भी दिखता है जब

in the way in which religions set up rituals

धर्म मे रीति रिवाजों को

around important feelings.

खास भावनाओं से जोडा जाता है.

Take the Moon. It's really important to look at the Moon.

अब चन्द्रमा को ही ले लीजिये. इसे देख्नना महत्वपूर्ण है.

You know, when you look at the Moon,

और आप जानते हैं कि जब आप चांद देखते है,

you think, "I'm really small. What are my problems?"

तो सोचते है, "मै कितना तुच्छ हूं, मेरी समस्यायें क्या है?"

It sets things into perspective, etc., etc.

इससे चीजों का एक नजरिया बनता है.

We should all look at the Moon a bit more often. We don't.

हमें चांद को कई बार देखना चाहिये, पर हम नही देखते.

Why don't we? Well there's nothing to tell us, "Look at the Moon."

क्यों नहीं? क्यों कि हमसे कोई ये कहने वाला ही नही है,"चांद को देखो".

But if you're a Zen Buddhist in the middle of September,

लेकिन अगर आप एक जेन बुद्ध है तो सितम्बर के बीच मे

you will be ordered out of your home, made to stand on a canonical platform

आपको एक खास मंच पे खडे होना पडेगा,

and made to celebrate the festival of Tsukimi,

और आप सुकिमी का त्योहार मनायेंगे,

where you will be given poems to read

जिसमे आपको चांद के सम्मान और समय के चक्र और

in honor of the Moon and the passage of time

जीवन की भंगुरता के बारे मे याद दिलाने के लिये

and the frailty of life that it should remind us of.

कवितायें पढने को दी जायेगी.

You'll be handed rice cakes.

फ़िर आपको चावल का केक दिया जायेगा.

And the Moon and the reflection on the Moon

और चांद और उसका प्रतिबिम्ब

will have a secure place in your heart.

आपके दिल मे हमेशा के लिये बस जायेगा.

That's very good.

ये वाकई बहुत अच्छी बात है.

The other thing that religions are really aware of

दुसरी बात जो धर्म अच्छी तरह समझते हैं

is: speak well --

वो है : अच्छी वाणी --

I'm not doing a very good job of this here --

जो मै यहां बहुत अच्छा नही कर पा रहा हूं --

but oratory, oratory is absolutely key to religions.

वाक्पटुता तो वाकई धर्म का मूल है.

In the secular world, you can come through the university system and be a lousy speaker

इस भौतिकतावादी दुनिया मे, आप विश्वविद्यालय पद्धति मे पढ के, अच्छे वक्ता न होने के बावजूद

and still have a great career.

एक अच्छा जीवन बना सकते हैं.

But the religious world doesn't think that way.

लेकिन धार्मिक दुनिया ऐसा नही सोचती

What you're saying needs to be backed up

आप जो भी कहें उसे अच्छे विश्वसनीय तरीके

by a really convincing way of saying it.

से कहना बहुत जरूरी है

So if you go to an African-American Pentecostalist church

तो यदि आप दक्षिण अमेरिका के किसी अफ़्रीकी अमेरिकी पेन्टेकोस्टल चर्च मे जायेंगे

in the American South

और उनकी बातें सुनेगे तो

and you listen to how they talk,

जान जायेगें कि वे वाकई बहुत ही

my goodness, they talk well.

अच्छे से बात करते हैं.

After every convincing point, people will go, "Amen, amen, amen."

हर निश्चयात्मक बात के बाद सब "आमीन आमीन आमीन" कहते हैं.

At the end of a really rousing paragraph, they'll all stand up,

और हर उत्साहपूर्ण बात के बाद सब खडे होके कहेंगे.

and they'll go, "Thank you Jesus, thank you Christ, thank you Savior."

"शुक्रिया जीजस, शुक्रिया क्राइस्ट, शुक्रिया तारणहार".

If we were doing it like they do it --

अगर हम भी ऐसे ही करें जैसे वो करते हैं --

let's not do it, but if we were to do it --

हम ऐसा करते नही हैं पर बस सोचिये अगर हम ऐसे करें --

I would tell you something like, "Culture should replace scripture."

मैं आपसे ऐसा कुछ कहूं जैसे "ग्रन्थों को संस्कृति से प्रतिस्थापित कर देना चाहिये".

And you would go, "Amen, amen, amen."

और आप सब कहें, "आमीन, आमीन, आमीन."

And at the end of my talk, you would all stand up

और मेरी बात के अन्त मे सब खडे होकर

and you would go, "Thank you Plato, thank you Shakespeare, thank you Jane Austen."

कहें "शुक्रिया प्लूटो, शुक्रिया शेक्सपीयर, शुक्रिया जेन औस्टिन."

And we'd know that we had a real rhythm going.

और हमे लगे कि हम वाकई सुर मे सुर मिला रहे हैं.

All right, all right. We're getting there. We're getting there.

तो कैसा लगेगा!

The other thing that religions know is we're not just brains,

एक और चीज जो धर्म जानते है कि हमारे अन्दर सिर्फ़ एक मन ही नही

we are also bodies.

एक शरीर भी हैं

And when they teach us a lesson,

और जब वो कोइ पाठ पढायेंगे तो

they do it via the body.

वो शरीर से ही होके जायेगा.

So for example,

जैसे कि उदाहरण के लिये

take the Jewish idea of forgiveness.

यहूदी लोगों का क्षमादान.

Jews are very interested in forgiveness

and how we should start anew and start afresh.

बहुत विश्वास करते हैं.

They don't just deliver us sermons on this.

और इसका केवल उपदेश नही देते.

They don't just give us books or words about this.

वो केवल किताबो या बातो मे ये करने को नही कहते.

They tell us to have a bath.

वो हमे स्नान करने को कहते है.

So in Orthodox Jewish communities, every Friday you go to a Mikveh.

एक कट्टर यहूदी समाज मे आप हर शुक्रवार एक मिक्वे मे जाते हैं.

You immerse yourself in the water,

आप पानी मे डुबकी लगाते है

and a physical action backs up a philosophical idea.

और ये भौतिक कर्म एक दार्शनिक विचार को बल देता है.

We don't tend to do that.

लेकिन हम ऐसा नही करते.

Our ideas are in one area and our behavior with our bodies is in another.

हमारे विचार एक जगह पे है और हमारा व्यवहार हमारे शरीर के साथ कहीं और है.

Religions are fascinating in the way they try and combine the two.

धर्म इन दोनो को बडे अद्भुत तरीके से मिलाने की कोशिश करते हैं.

Let's look at art now.

आईये अब कला के बारे मे बात करते हैं

Now art is something that in the secular world,

कला को इस लौकिक दुनिया मे हम बहुत श्रेष्ठ मानते हैं.

we think very highly of. We think art is really, really important.

हमारे खयाल से कला वाकई बहुत ही महत्वपूर्ण हैं.

A lot of our surplus wealth goes to museums, etc.

हमारा बहुत सारा अतिरिक्त धन संग्रहालयों को दिया जाता है.

We sometimes hear it said

हमें कई बार तो ये सुनने को भी मिलता है कि

that museums are our new cathedrals, or our new churches.

सन्ग्रहालय हमारे नये चर्च हैं.

You've heard that saying.

आपने कई बार ये सुना होगा.

Now I think that the potential is there,

मेरे हिसाब से वहां कोई बात तो है,

but we've completely let ourselves down.

लेकिन हमने खुद को पुरी तरह निराश किया है.

And the reason we've let ourselves down

और निराशा की वजह ये है कि

is that we're not properly studying

हमने इस बात को ठीक से जाना ही नही है कि

how religions handle art.

धर्म कला को कैसे चलाते हैं.

The two really bad ideas that are hovering in the modern world

दो बहुत बडी गलतफ़हमियां दुनिया मे प्रचलित हैं

that inhibit our capacity to draw strength from art:

जो कला से शक्ति पाने की हमारी क्षमता को रोक रही हैं:

The first idea is that art should be for art's sake --

एक तो ये कि कला सिर्फ़ कला मात्र के लिये ही होनी चहिये --

a ridiculous idea --

जो कि एकदम बेहूदा खयाल है --

an idea that art should live in a hermetic bubble

और ये कि कला को तो सन्यासियों की दुनिया मे रहना चाहिये

and should not try to do anything with this troubled world.

और इस दुखी सन्सार के लिये कुछ नही करना चाहिये.

I couldn't disagree more.

मैं ये बिल्कुल नही मानता.

The other thing that we believe is that art shouldn't explain itself,

एक और बात ये है कि हम मानते हैं कि कला को खुद को व्यक्त नही करना चाहिये,

that artists shouldn't say what they're up to,

कि कलाकार को अपनी कला के बारे मे कुछ नही कहना चाहिए,

because if they said it, it might destroy the spell

क्योंकि अगर उन्होंने बता दिया तो उसका सारा रहस्य खुल जायेगा

and we might find it too easy.

और हमे वो बहुत आसान लगने लगेगा.

That's why a very common feeling when you're in a museum --

इसीलिये जब भी हम सन्ग्रहालय मे होते है तो हमे ऐसा लगता है --

let's admit it --

आज मान ही लेते हैं --

is, "I don't know what this is about."

कि " मुझे कुछ समझ मे नही आता कि ये सब क्या है"

But if we're serious people, we don't admit to that.

लेकिन कोइ गम्भीर व्यक्ति ये स्वीकार नही करता है.

But that feeling of puzzlement is structural

लेकिन ये भावना समकालीन कला का

to contemporary art.

संरचनात्मक हिस्सा बन गयी है.

Now religions have a much saner attitude to art.

धर्मों का कला के प्रति काफ़ी साफ़ नज़रिया है.

They have no trouble telling us what art is about.

उन्हें ये बताने मे कोइ परेशानी नही है कि कला किस बारे मे है.

Art is about two things in all the major faiths.

कला के सभी मुख्य मतो मे दो उद्देश्य हैं.

Firstly, it's trying to remind you

पहला,ये आपको याद दिलाने की कोशिश करती है कि

of what there is to love.

दुनिया मे कुछ प्यार करने के लिये भी है.

And secondly, it's trying to remind you

और दूसरा, हमे ये बताने के लिये कि

of what there is to fear and to hate.

हमे किससे डरना चाहिये और बचना चाहिये.

And that's what art is.

और यही कला का उद्देश्य है.

Art is a visceral encounter with the most important ideas of your faith.

कला हमारी आस्था के विचारो का शारीरिक रूप है.

So as you walk around a church,

तो जब आप किसी चर्च , मस्जिद

or a mosque or a cathedral,

या गिरिजाघर के पास से गुजरते हैं,

what you're trying to imbibe, what you're imbibing is,

तो आप क्या सीखते हैं, आप वही सीखते हैं

through your eyes, through your senses,

जो आप अपनी आंखों से देखते हैं, महसूस करते है,

truths that have otherwise come to you through your mind.

वो सच जो अन्यथा आपके पास दिमाग के रास्ते से आता है, शरीर के नहीं.

Essentially it's propaganda.

ये वस्तुत: एक तरह का प्रचार है.

Rembrandt is a propagandist

रेम्ब्रान्ट ईसाईयों की नज़र मे

in the Christian view.

एक प्रचारक है.

Now the word "propaganda" sets off alarm bells.

प्रचार शब्द सुनते ही हम सतर्क हो जाते हैं.

We think of Hitler, we think of Stalin. Don't, necessarily.

हम हिटलर और स्टालिन के बारे मे सोचते हैं. पर ये जरूरी नही है.

Propaganda is a manner of being didactic in honor of something.

प्रचार किसी चीज के बारे मे ज्ञान देने का तरीका है.

And if that thing is good, there's no problem with it at all.

और अगर वो चीज अच्छी है तो इसमे कुछ गलत नही है.

My view is that museums should take a leaf out of the book of religions.

मेरे हिसाब से संग्रहालयों को धर्म से इस बारे मे सीखना चाहिये.

And they should make sure that when you walk into a museum --

और इस बात का ध्यान रख्नना चाहिये कि जब भी आप संग्रहालय मे जायें --

if I was a museum curator,

अगर मै वहां का अध्यक्ष होता,

I would make a room for love, a room for generosity.

तो मै प्रेम के लिये एक अलग कक्ष बनाता और एक उदारता के लिये.

All works of art are talking to us about things.

सभी कलाकृतियां हमे कुछ सिखाती हैं.

And if we were able to arrange spaces

यदि हम अपने आस पास की दुनिया को इस तरह से व्यवस्थित कर सकें

where we could come across works

जहां हमे कई कलाकृतियां देखने मिलें

where we would be told, use these works of art

और हमे ये सिखाया जाये कि हम अपने विचारों को

to cement these ideas in your mind,

और प्रगाढ करने मे इन कलाकृतियों का प्रयोग करें,

we would get a lot more out of art.

तो हम कला से बहुत कुछ पा सकते हैं.

Art would pick up the duty that it used to have

कला पहले की तरह ही अपना काम खुद कर लेगी,

and that we've neglected because of certain mis-founded ideas.

पर हमने अपनी गलतफ़हमियों के कारण इस बात की उपेक्षा की है.

Art should be one of the tools

कला समाज मे सुधार लाने का

by which we improve our society.

एक साधन है.

Art should be didactic.

कला निर्देशात्मक होनी चाहिये

Let's think of something else.

चलिये किसी और चीज के बारे मे सोचते है.

The people in the modern world, in the secular world,

इस आधुनिक लौकिक संसार मे,

who are interested in matters of the spirit,

जो लोग आत्मा, मन और

in matters of the mind,

ऐसे उच्च आत्मीय विषयों मे

in higher soul-like concerns,

रुचि लेते है, अक्सर

tend to be isolated individuals.

वो अकेले ही होते है.

They're poets, they're philosophers, they're photographers, they're filmmakers.

जैसे कि कवि, दार्शनिक, फ़ोटोग्राफ़र और फ़िल्मकार.

And they tend to be on their own.

और वो अक्सर स्वावलम्बी होते है.

They're our cottage industries. They are vulnerable, single people.

वो हमारे लघु उद्योगो की तरह अकेले और असुरक्षित है.

And they get depressed and they get sad on their own.

और वे खुद ही दुखी और उदास होते रहते है

And they don't really change much.

और वो ज्यादा बदलते भी नही है.

Now think about religions, think about organized religions.

अब आप धर्म के बारे मे सोचिये, संगठित धर्म के बारे मे.

What do organized religions do?

धार्मिक संगठन क्या करते है?

They group together, they form institutions.

वो समूह बनाकर संस्थान बनाते हैं.

And that has all sorts of advantages.

और इसके बहुत सारे फ़ायदे हैं

First of all, scale, might.

सर्वप्रथम विशालता और शक्ति.

The Catholic Church pulled in 97 billion dollars last year

वालस्ट्रीट के अनुसार

according to the Wall Street Journal.

केथोलिक चर्च ने गत वर्ष 97 बिलियन डालर एकत्रित किये.

These are massive machines.

ये विशालकाय तन्त्र है.

They're collaborative, they're branded, they're multinational,

वे सहयोगिक हैं, ब्रान्डेड हैं और बहुराष्ट्रीय हैं.

and they're highly disciplined.

और वो बहुत ही अनुशासित हैं.

These are all very good qualities.

ये सब बहुत अच्छे गुण हैं.

We recognize them in relation to corporations.

हम उन्हें एक निगम की तरह मानते हैं.

And corporations are very like religions in many ways,

और निगम बहुत कुछ धर्मों की तरह ही है,

except they're right down at the bottom of the pyramid of needs.

बस इतना फ़र्क है कि वो आवश्यकता के पिरामिड मे सबसे नीचे हैं

They're selling us shoes and cars.

वे हमें जूते और कार बेच रहे है.

Whereas the people who are selling us the higher stuff --

जबकि जो लोग हमे उच्च श्रेणी की चीजें बेच रहे हैं --

the therapists, the poets --

जैसे कि योगाचार्य या कवि --

are on their own and they have no power,

बस खुद पर ही चल रहे है और उनके पास कोइ शक्ति नही है,

they have no might.

उनके पास कोइ बल नही है.

So religions are the foremost example

तो धर्म ऐसी संस्था का सबसे बडा उदाहरण है

of an institution that is fighting for the things of the mind.

जो मन मे चलने वाली चीजों के लिये लड़ रही है.

Now we may not agree with what religions are trying to teach us,

अब हो सकता है हम वो ना माने जो धर्म हमें सिखाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं.

but we can admire the institutional way

लेकिन हम उनके इस संस्थागत तरीके की

in which they're doing it.

सराहना तो कर ही सकते हैं.

Books alone, books written by lone individuals,

केवल किताबों से, एकाकी व्यक्तियों द्वारा लिखी गयी किताबों से

are not going to change anything.

कुछ नही बदलने वाला.

We need to group together.

हम सबको एक साथ इकट्ठा होने की जरुरत है.

If you want to change the world, you have to group together, you have to be collaborative.

अगर आप दुनिया को बदलना चाहते हैन तो आपको एक साथ मिल कर संगठित होना पडेगा.

And that's what religions do.

और यही काम धर्म करते है.

They are multinational, as I say,

जैसा कि मैने कहा, वे बहुराष्ट्रीय हैं

they are branded, they have a clear identity,

ब्रान्डेड हैं और उनकी एक साफ़ पहचान है.

so they don't get lost in a busy world.

इसलिये वो इस व्यस्त दुनिया मे खो नही जाते.

That's something we can learn from.

और ये चीज हम उनसे सीख सकते हैं.

I want to conclude.

मैं अब निष्कर्ष पर आता हूं.

Really what I want to say

वस्तुत: मैं जो कहना चाहता हूं,

is for many of you who are operating in a range of different fields,

वो आप मे से जो लोग विभिन्न क्षेत्रो मे काम कर रहे हैं, उनके लिये है,

there is something to learn from the example of religion --

कुछ ऐसा है जो आप धर्म से सीख सकते हैं --

even if you don't believe any of it.

भले ही आप उसकी किसी बात पर विश्वास नही करते हैं , फ़िर भी.

If you're involved in anything that's communal,

अगर आप कोइ ऐसा काम करते है जो सामुदायिक है,

that involves lots of people getting together,

जिसमे बहुत सारे लोग मिलके काम करते हैं,

there are things for you in religion.

तो धर्म मे आपके लिये कई चीजे हैं.

If you're involved, say, in a travel industry in any way,

अगर आप किसी तरह से एक पर्यटन उद्योग से जुड़े हैं,

look at pilgrimage.

तो तीर्थस्थानों को देखिये.

Look very closely at pilgrimage.

ध्यान से देखिये.

We haven't begun to scratch the surface

अभी तो हमे हलका सा भी अन्दाजा नही हुआ है

of what travel could be

कि पर्यटन क्या बन सकता है,

because we haven't looked at what religions do with travel.

क्योंकि अभी तक हमने इस बात पर ध्यान ही नही दिया कि धर्म पर्यटन को कैसे प्रभावित करता है.

If you're in the art world,

यदि आप कला की दुनिया मे हैं

look at the example of what religions are doing with art.

तो उन उदाहरणो को देखिये तो धर्म के कला पर प्रभाव को दिखाते हैं.

And if you're an educator in any way,

अगर आप शिक्षक है तो

again, look at how religions are spreading ideas.

देखिये कि धर्म किस तरह से विचारों का प्रसार करते हैं.

You may not agree with the ideas,

आप भले ही विचारों से सहमत ना हों,

but my goodness, they're highly effective mechanisms for doing so.

पर ये कुछ करने की वाकई बहुत ही प्रभावशाली विधियां हैं.

So really my concluding point

तो मेरा निष्कर्ष आखिर मे ये है कि

is you may not agree with religion,

भले ही आप धर्म से सहमत ना हों,

but at the end of the day,

परन्तु आखिरकार,

religions are so subtle, so complicated,

धर्म इतने सूक्ष्म और जटिल हैं

so intelligent in many ways

और बहुत सी बातों मे इतने आगे हैं

that they're not fit to be abandoned to the religious alone;

कि उन्हें यह कहकर कि ये सिर्फ़ धार्मिक लोगों के लिये हैं, नही छोडा जा सकता

they're for all of us.

वो हम सबके लिए हैं.

that a lot of people might say

which is this sense --

that's actually probably the most important thing to anyone who's religious --

of spiritual experience,

और वो है आत्मिक अनुभव,

of some kind of connection

एक विशेष बन्धन,

with something that's bigger than you are.

जो कि खुद से भी बढकर है.

Is there any room for that experience in Atheism 2.0?

उस अनुभव के लिये अनीश्वर्वाद 2.0 मे कोई स्थान है?

AB: Absolutely. I, like many of you, meet people

ए. बो.: अवश्य. मै, आपकी तरह ही, कई लोगों से मिलता हूं

who say things like, "But isn't there something bigger than us,

जो कहते हैं, "लेकिन कोई चीज तो है जो हम सबसे बडी है.

something else?"

कुछ और?" और मै कहता हूं, "अवश्य."

And I say, "Of course." And they say, "So aren't you sort of religious?"

और वो कहते हैं, "तो फ़िर आप भी एक तरह से धार्मिक नहीं हुये?"

And I go, "No." Why does that sense of mystery,

और मै कहता हूं, "नहीं". ये जरूरी तो नही है कि ये रहस्य,

that sense of the dizzying scale of the universe,

ये अनन्त ब्रह्मांड कि विशालता का एकसास,

need to be accompanied by a mystical feeling?

किसी आध्यात्मिक भावना से जोडा जाये?

Science and just observation

विज्ञान और सही अवलोकन

gives us that feeling without it,

हमे बिना इसके ही ये एहसास दिला सकते हैं,

so I don't feel the need.

तो मुझे तो किसी आध्यात्मिकता की जरूरत नही लगती.

The universe is large and we are tiny,

संसार बहुत विशाल है और हम बहुत तुच्छ,

without the need for further religious superstructure.

तो हमे और किसी धार्मिक महासंरचना की जरूरत नही है.

So one can have so-called spiritual moments

हमे आत्मिक अनुभूति तो आत्मा मे

without belief in the spirit.

विश्वास किये बिना भी मिल सकती है.

CA: Actually, let me just ask a question.

क्रिस ए.: मै एक सवाल पूछ्ना चाहूगा.

How many people here would say

यहां बैठे कितने लोग ये कहेंगे कि

that religion is important to them?

धर्म उनके लिये महत्वपूर्ण है?

Is there an equivalent process

क्या कोई ऐसा तरीका है जिससे

by which there's a sort of bridge

आप जो कह रहे हैं और जो आप उनसे कहना चाहेंगे,

between what you're talking about and what you would say to them?

के बीच कोइ सम्बन्ध स्थापित हो सके?

AB: I would say that there are many, many gaps in secular life

ऐ. बो.: मेरे खयाल से ऐसे बहुत तरीके हैं, लौकिक जीवन मे बहुत कमियां है

and these can be plugged.

जो कि पूरी की जा सकती हैं.

It's not as though, as I try to suggest,

और ,जैसा कि मैने कहा, ऐसा भी नही कि

it's not as though either you have religion

या तो आप धार्मिक हो और आपको

and then you have to accept all sorts of things,

सारी तरह की बातें माननी पड़ेंगी,

or you don't have religion

या अगर आप नास्तिक हैं तो

and then you're cut off from all these very good things.

आपको सभी अच्छी चीजों से वंचित होना पडेगा.

It's so sad that we constantly say,

ये बहुत दुख की बात है कि हम हमेशा कहते रहते हैं कि

"I don't believe so I can't have community,

"मै नास्तिक हूं इसलिये मै किसी समुदाय का हिस्सा नही बन सकता,

so I'm cut off from morality,

मै नैतिकता से दूर हूं,

so I can't go on a pilgrimage."

और इसलिये मै तीर्थयात्रा पर नही जा सकता."

One wants to say, "Nonsense. Why not?"

लोग कहना चहते हैं, "बकवास. क्यों नही?"

And that's really the spirit of my talk.

और यही मेरी बात का सार है.

There's so much we can absorb.

यहां हमारे सीखने के लिये कितना कुछ है!

Atheism shouldn't cut itself off from the rich sources of religion.

अनीश्वरवाद को खुद को धर्म की अच्छी चीजो से अलग नही रखना चाहिये.

CA: It seems to me that there's plenty of people in the TED community

क्रिस. ए.: मुझे ऐसा लगता है कि TED समुदाय मे काफ़ी लोग ऐसे हैं

who are atheists.

जो नास्तिक हैं.

But probably most people in the community

लेकिन उनमे से ज्यदातर

certainly don't think that religion is going away any time soon

निश्चित तौर पर ये मानते हैं कि धर्म निकट भविष्य में तो कहीं नही जाने वाला

and want to find the language

और वो एक ऐसी भाषा चाहते हैं

to have a constructive dialogue

जिससे वो एक रचनात्मक संवाद कर सकें

and to feel like we can actually talk to each other

और एक दूसरे से बात भी कर सकें

and at least share some things in common.

और कम से कम वो चीजें जो समान हैं उन्हें बांट सकें.

Are we foolish to be optimistic

क्या ये आशा करना

about the possibility of a world

कि एक ऐसी दुनिया हो

where, instead of religion being the great rallying cry

जिसमे धर्म लोगो को बांटने और युद्ध करवाने के,

of divide and war,

बजाय एक दुसरे से जोडने का माध्यम बनेगा,

that there could be bridging?

मूर्खतापूर्ण है?

AB: No, we need to be polite about differences.

ए. बो.: नहीं, हमे बस अपने मतभेदों का आदर करना चाहिये.

Politeness is a much-overlooked virtue.

विनम्रता जैसे महत्वपूर्ण गुण की लोग उपेक्षा कर देते है और इसे

It's seen as hypocrisy.

ढोंग समझते हैं.

But we need to get to a stage when you're an atheist

लेकिन हमें एक ऐसे स्तर पर आने की जरुरत है जहां आप एक नास्तिक हैं

and someone says, "Well you know, I did pray the other day,"

और अगर कोइ कहे "पता है, मैने तो उस दिन प्रार्थना की थी,"

you politely ignore it.

और आप उसे विनम्रता पूर्वक टाल देते हैं.

You move on.

और आगे बढ जाते हैं.

Because you've agreed on 90 percent of things,

क्योंकि आपने 90 प्रतिशत बातें मान ली हैं,

because you have a shared view on so many things,

और आप कितनी बातों पर एकमत हैं,

and you politely differ.

और आप विनम्रतापूर्वक अपनी असहमति भी व्यक्त कर देते हैं.

And I think that's what the religious wars of late have ignored.

और मेरे खयाल से यही चीज धर्मयुद्धों ने नही समझी है.

They've ignored the possibility of harmonious disagreement.

उन्होने सद्‍भावपूर्ण असहमति की सम्भवना को पूरी तरह से नकार दिया है.

CA: And finally, does this new thing that you're proposing

that's not a religion but something else,

जो कि धर्म नही बल्कि कुछ और ही है,

does it need a leader,

क्या इसे किसी नेता की जरुरत है,

and are you volunteering to be the pope?

या आप खुद ही पोप बनने वाले हैं?

AB: Well, one thing that we're all very suspicious of

is individual leaders.

It doesn't need it.

What I've tried to lay out is a framework

and I'm hoping that people can just fill it in.

I've sketched a sort of broad framework.

But wherever you are, as I say, if you're in the travel industry, do that travel bit.

If you're in the communal industry, look at religion and do the communal bit.
