about the bonds of women over three generations,

about how the astonishing strength of those bonds

took hold in the life of a four-year-old girl

huddled with her young sister, her mother and her grandmother

التي حُشرت هي وأختها الصغيرة

for five days and nights in a small boat in the China Sea

في مركب صغير في بحر الصين

قبل اكثر من ثلاثين عاماً

more than 30 years ago.

Bonds that took hold in the life of that small girl

القيود التي سيطرت على حياة تلك الفتاة الصغيرة

ولم تتركها ابداً--

and never let go --

that small girl now living in San Francisco

and speaking to you today.

This is not a finished story.

It is a jigsaw puzzle still being put together.

إنها أحجية لم ينتهي بعد جمعها.

دعوني اخبركم عن بعض الأجزاء.

Let me tell you about some of the pieces.

تخيلوا الجزء الأول

Imagine the first piece: a man burning his life's work.

رجُل يحرق عمل حياته

He is a poet, a playwright,

إنه شاعر,كاتب مسرحي,

رجل كانت كُل حياته

a man whose whole life

had been balanced on the single hope of his country's unity and freedom.

مُتوازنة على أمل واحد

يتعلق بوحدة وطنه وحريته.

Imagine him as the communists enter Saigon --

تخيلوه وقد دخل الشيوعيون الى "سيجون"

confronting the fact that his life had been a complete waste.

مواجهاً الحقيقة

أن حياته قد ضاعت بالكامل

Words, for so long his friends, now mocked him.

كلمات,كانت صديقته لوقت طويل,الاّن تسخر منه.

التجأ إلى الصمت.

He retreated into silence.

He died broken by history.

مات مكسوراً من التاريخ.

He is my grandfather.

إنه جدي

لم أرهُ ابداً في حياتي.

I never knew him in real life.

لكن حياتنا كانت اكثر بكثير من ذكرياتنا

But our lives are much more than our memories.

My grandmother never let me forget his life.

جدتي لم تتركني ابداً أنسى حياته.

My duty was not to allow it to have been in vain,

واجبي كان أن لا أدعها تذهب سُداً

والدرس الذي تعلمته

and my lesson was to learn that, yes, history tried to crush us,

انه ,نعم, يُحاول التاريخ ان يُحطمنا,

but we endured.

لكننا نتحمل.

The next piece of the jigsaw is of a boat in the early dawn

هي حول قارب في الفجر الباكر

slipping silently out to sea.

ينزلق في صمت في البحر

أمي,"ماي" ,كان عمرها 18 عاماً

My mother, Mai, was 18 when her father died --

عندما تُوفي جدي--

already in an arranged marriage,

تم زفافها

already with two small girls.

ولديها إبنتان صغيرتان

For her, life had distilled itself into one task:

بالنسبة لها,كانت حياتها تدور في مُهمة واحدة

الهروب بعائلتها

the escape of her family and a new life in Australia.

وحياة جديدة في استراليا.

It was inconceivable to her that she would not succeed.

من غير المُصدق بالنسبة لها

أنها لن تنجح.

So after a four-year saga that defies fiction,

فبعد اربعة اعوام,مثل ملحمة تحدت الخيال,

a boat slipped out to sea disguised as a fishing vessel.

انزلق قارب الى البحر

مُتتكر في هيئة مركب صيد

All the adults knew the risks.

جميع البالغين يعلمون المخاطر.

The greatest fear was of pirates, rape and death.

الخوف الأكبر كان من القراصنة

الإغتصاب والموت

مثل معظم البالغين في المركب

Like most adults on the boat,

جلبت امي معها زجاجة صغير من السُم

my mother carried a small bottle of poison.

If we were captured, first my sister and I,

اذا تم اعتقالنا,اولاً اختي,ثُم أنا,

بعد ذلك هي وجدتي سوف يشربونه

then she and my grandmother would drink.

My first memories are from the boat --

أول ذكرياتي من القارب--

الصوت المنتظم للمُحرك,

the steady beat of the engine,

ومقدمة السفينة تغطس مع كلُل موجة,

the bow dipping into each wave,

الأفق الكبير والفارغ

the vast and empty horizon.

لا أتذكر القراصنة الذين جأءوا عدة مرات,

I don't remember the pirates who came many times,

but were bluffed by the bravado of the men on our boat,

لكننا تحايلنا بتبجح

على الرجال على المركب,

or the engine dying and failing to start for six hours.

ومرات المُحرك الذي تعطل

وفشلنا في اعادة التشغيل لمدة ستة ساعات.

But I do remember the lights on the oil rig off the Malaysian coast

لكنني أتذكر الأضواء على منصة البترول

قُبالة الساحل الماليزي

وقصة الرجل الذي إنهار ومات

and the young man who collapsed and died,

the journey's end too much for him,

نهاية الرحلة كانت كثيرة بالنسبة له

وأول تُفاحة أتذوقها,

and the first apple I tasted, given to me by the men on the rig.

أعطيت إلي من الرجال على المنصة

No apple has ever tasted the same.

لم يكن لأي تُفاحة نفس الطعم

بعد ثلاثة أشهر في معسكر اللاجئين,

After three months in a refugee camp, we landed in Melbourne.

وصلنا الى "ميلبورن"

والجزء التالي من الأحجية

And the next piece of the jigsaw is about four women

عن اربعة نساء من ثلاثة اجيال

across three generations shaping a new life together.

يُشكلون حياة جديدة معاً

استقرينا في "فوت سكاري"

We settled in Footscray,

ضاحية الطبقة العاملة

a working-class suburb whose demographic is layers of immigrants.

والتي تتكون ديموغرافيتها من طبقات من المُهاجرين.

Unlike the settled middle-class suburbs, whose existence I was oblivious of,

لا تُشابه ضواحي الطبقة المتوسطة

والتي كنت غافلة عن وجوده

لا يوجد اي شعور بالاستحقاق في "فوت سكاري"

there was no sense of entitlement in Footscray.

الروائح من ابواب المتجر كانت من باقي العالم

The smells from shop doors were from the rest of the world.

وقصاصات الانجليزية الركيكة

And the snippets of halting English

التي كانت تتبادل بين الناس

were exchanged between people who had one thing in common:

والذين كان يجمعهم شيء مُشترك

They were starting again.

أنهم يبدأون مرة أخرى

My mother worked on farms,

عملت أمي في الحقول

then on a car assembly line,

وثم على خط تجميع السيارات

working six days, double shifts.

تعمل ستة ايام وبدوامين

بطريقة ما وجدت وقتاً لتتعلم الانجليزية

Somehow, she found time to study English

and gain IT qualifications.

وحصلت على مؤهلات في تقنية المعلومات.

كُنا فقراء

We were poor.

جميع الدولارات كانت مُخصصة

All the dollars were allocated

لدروس اضافية في الانجليزية والحساب

and extra tuition in English and mathematics was budgeted for

كانت مُعتمدة لها

regardless of what missed out,

بغض النظر عن ما سوف نفقده

which was usually new clothes;

والذي كان دوما الملابس الجديدة

كانت دوما ملابس رديئة

they were always secondhand.

زوجان من الجوارب للمدرسة

Two pairs of stockings for school,

each to hide the holes in the other.

يغطي احدها الثقوب التي في الاّخر

لبس المدرسة يصل الى الكاحلين

A school uniform down to the ankles, because it had to last for six years.

لأنه استعمل لمدة ستة سنوات

وهناك تعليقات نادرة لكنها لاذعه

And there were rare but searing chants of "slit-eye"

حول "العين الضيقة"

وبعض الاحيان كتابة على الجدران

and the occasional graffiti:

"Asian, go home."

"ايها الاسيويون عودو الى بلادكم"

Go home to where?

نذهب الى أي وطن؟

شيء يتردد في داخلي.

Something stiffened inside me.

There was a gathering of resolve and a quiet voice saying,

كان هناك تجميع للحلول

وصوت خافت يقول "سوف اتجاوزك"

"I will bypass you."

أنا وأمي وأختي

My mother, my sister and I slept in the same bed.

نمنا على نفس الفراش.

My mother was exhausted each night,

كانت أمي مُنهكة في كل ليلة

لكننا نخبر بعضنا البعض عن يومنا

but we told one another about our day

ونستمع لتحركات

and listened to the movements of my grandmother around the house.

جدتي في ارجاء المنزل

عانت أمي من الكوابيس

My mother suffered from nightmares, all about the boat.

جميعها حول المركب

And my job was to stay awake until her nightmares came

ووظيفتي كانت ان اضل مستيقظة حتى يأتي كابوسها

so I could wake her.

فيكون بإمكاني ايقاظها

فتحت متجر لاجهزة الحاسب الاّلي

She opened a computer store,

وثم درست لتعمل في التجميل

then studied to be a beautician and opened another business.

وفتحت نشاطاً اّخر

And the women came with their stories

وجاء النساء بقصصهن

about men who could not make the transition,

حول الرجال الغير قادرين على تقبل الإنتقال

غاضبون وغير مرنين,

angry and inflexible,

and troubled children caught between two worlds.

والاطفال المشاكسين المصورين بين عالمين.

السعي نحو المنح والرُعاة

Grants and sponsors were sought.

Centers were established.

تأسست المراكز

عشتُ في عالمين مٌتوازيين

I lived in parallel worlds.

في احدها, كنت طالبة اسيوية كلاسيكية,

In one, I was the classic Asian student,

relentless in the demands that I made on myself.

متشبثة بمتطلباتها التي حددتها لنفسها

In the other, I was enmeshed in lives that were precarious,

وفي الاّخر,كنت محصورة في حياة غير مستقرة

tragically scarred by violence, drug abuse and isolation.

خائفة من العنف بشكل مأساوي

المخدرات,سوء المُعاملة,والعزلة

But so many over the years were helped.

لكن الكثير ساعدني على مر السنين

ولاجل ذلك خلق العمل,عندما كنت في سنتي الاخيرة كطالبة قانون,

And for that work, when I was a final-year law student,

I was chosen as the Young Australian of the Year.

تم اختياري كأصغر استرالية لذلك العام.

And I was catapulted from one piece of the jigsaw to another,

وتم قذفي

من جزء في الاحجية الى جزء اّخر,

and their edges didn't fit.

لم تتناسب أطرافها

Tan Le, anonymous Footscray resident,

اصبحت الاّ تان لي , الناشطة الاجتماعية وفي مجال اللاجئين,

was now Tan Le, refugee and social activist,

invited to speak in venues she had never heard of

تُدعى للتحدث في محافل لم تسمع بها من قبل

وإلى منازل التي وجودها

and into homes whose existence she could never have imagined.

لم تكن لتتخيله ابداً

لم أكن أعرف البروتوكولات

I didn't know the protocols.

لم أكن اعرف كيف استعمل ادوات المائدة.

I didn't know how to use the cutlery.

لم اكن اعرف كيف اتحدث عن النبيذ.

I didn't know how to talk about wine.

I didn't know how to talk about anything.

لم اكن اعرف التحدث عن أي شيء.

I wanted to retreat to the routines and comfort

اردت ان أخلد الى الروتين والراحة

of life in an unsung suburb --

الموجودة في حياة ضاحية المجهولوين--

a grandmother, a mother and two daughters

جدة,وأم, وإبنتان

ending each day as they had for almost 20 years,

ينهون يومهم كما اعتادوا طوال عشرين عاماً

يخبر كلاً منهم الاّخر عن قصة يومه

telling one another the story of their day

وينامون

and falling asleep, the three of us still in the same bed.

ثلاثتنا ما زلنا في نفس الفراش

اخبرت والدتي انني لا استطيع عمل ذلك

I told my mother I couldn't do it.

She reminded me that I was now the same age she had been

ذكرتني انني الاّن في نفس العمر الذي كانت عليه

عندما صعدنا الى القارب

when we boarded the boat.

"No" had never been an option.

حيث لم يكن هناك اي خيار

"افعليه فقط" قالت.

"Just do it," she said,

"and don't be what you're not."

"ولا تحاولي ان تكوني شخصاً غيرك "

So I spoke out on youth unemployment and education

فتحدثت في بطالة الشباب وتعليمهم

and the neglect of the marginalized and disenfranchised.

والتهميش والحرمان من الحقوق

وكلما تحدثت بصراحة اكثر

And the more candidly I spoke, the more I was asked to speak.

كلما طُلب مني ان اتحدث اكثر

قابلت اشخاصا من مختلف مناشط الحياة

I met people from all walks of life,

so many of them doing the thing they loved,

الكثير منهم يقوم بالشيء الذي يحبه

يعيش في حدود الممكن.

living on the frontiers of possibility.

And even though I finished my degree,

وبالرغم انني انهيت دراستي

I realized I could not settle into a career in law.

ادركت انني لا يمكن ان اكتفي بتخصص القانون

There had to be another piece of the jigsaw.

يوجد هناك جزء اّخر من الأحجية

و أدركت في نفس الوقت

And I realized, at the same time,

that it is OK to be an outsider,

أنه من المقبول ان تكون غريباً

ومهاجراً

a recent arrival,

new on the scene --

جديداً على المشهد--

and not just OK,

ليس فقط مقبولاً

but something to be thankful for,

لكن شيء يجب ان تكون شاكراً له

perhaps a gift from the boat.

رُبما هدية من القارب

Because being an insider can so easily mean collapsing the horizons,

لأنه كونك من الداخل وغير غريب

يمكن بسهولة أن يعني ذلك تدمير الأفق

ويعني بسهولة

can so easily mean accepting the presumptions of your province.

قبول افتراضات الواقع

قفزت خارج نطاق الراحة بما فيه الكفاية الاّن

I have stepped outside my comfort zone enough now

to know that, yes, the world does fall apart,

لأعلم انه ,نعم, العالم يتجزء

لكن ليس بالطريقة التي تخشاها

but not in the way that you fear.

Possibilities that would not have been allowed

الامكانيات التي لم تكن مسموح بها

تصبح مشجعة لك بشكل كبير

were outrageously encouraged.

يوجد طاقة هناك

There was an energy there,

an implacable optimism,

تفاؤل لا هوادة فيه

a strange mixture of humility and daring.

خليط غريب من التواضع والجرأة

لذلك تبعتُ مشاعري.

So I followed my hunches.

وجمعت حولي فريق صغير من الاشخاص

I gathered around me a small team of people

for whom the label "It can't be done" was an irresistible challenge.

من من يرفعون شعار "ذلك لا يمكن عمله"

كان تحدي لا يُقاوم

For a year, we were penniless.

لمدة عام كُنا مُفلسين.

At the end of each day, I made a huge pot of soup

في نهاية كل يوم ,أقوم بعمل وعاء كبير من الحساء

نتشاركه جميعنا.

which we all shared.

عملن جيداً في كل ليلة

We worked well into each night.

Most of our ideas were crazy,

مُعظم أفكارنا كانت مجنونة

but a few were brilliant,

لكن القليل منها كان رائعاً

and we broke through.

وقُمنا بإختراق الأفق

I made the decision to move to the US after only one trip.

إتخذت القرار بالانتقال الى الولايات المتحدة.

بعد رحلة واحدة فقط.

My hunches again.

مشاعري مرة أخرى

Three months later, I had relocated, and the adventure has continued.

بعد ثلاثة اشهر , إنتقلت,

وأستمرت المُغامرة.

قبل أن اختم حديثي

Before I close, though, let me tell you about my grandmother.

دعوني اخبركم عن جدتي

كبرت في فترة من الزمن

She grew up at a time when Confucianism was the social norm

كانت في الكونفوشيوسية هي المعيار

and the local mandarin was the person who mattered.

والموظف المحلي ,كان هو الشخص المهم.

لم تتغير الحياة لعدة قرون

Life hadn't changed for centuries.

مات والدها مُباشرة بعد ولادتها.

Her father died soon after she was born.

Her mother raised her alone.

انشأتها والدتها بمفردها.

At 17, she became the second wife of a mandarin whose mother beat her.

في السابعة عشر اصبحت الزوجة الثانية

لموظف كانت أمه تضربها

With no support from her husband,

بدون اي دعم من زوجها

سببت ضجة كبيرة عندما أخذتها إلى المحكمة

she caused a sensation by taking him to court

and prosecuting her own case,

وحاكمته في قضيتها

and a far greater sensation when she won.

وضجة اكبر عندما ربحت القضية

"It can't be done" was shown to be wrong.

I was taking a shower in a hotel room in Sydney

كنت استحم في غرفة في فندق في سيدني

the moment she died,

في الوقت الذي ماتت فيه

600 miles away, in Melbourne.

على بعد 600 ميل في ميلبورن.

نظرت خلال زجاج الدش

I looked through the shower screen and saw her standing on the other side.

ورأيتها تقف في الجانب الاّخر

I knew she had come to say goodbye.

علمت أنها قدمت لتقول وداعاً.

إتصلت أمي بعد دقائق.

My mother phoned minutes later.

بعد عدة أيام

A few days later,

we went to a Buddhist temple in Footscray and sat around her casket.

ذهبنا الى معبد بوذي في "فوتسكراي"

وجلسنا حول النعش

وقلنا الحكايات

We told her stories and assured her that we were still with her.

تخيلناانها معنا

At midnight, the monk came and told us he had to close the casket.

في منتصف الليل جاء الراهب

واخبرنا ان عليه اغلاق النعش.

My mother asked us to feel her hand.

طلبت امي منا ان نتحسس يدها.

She asked the monk,

,طلبت من الراهب ان يخبرنا ذلك

"Why is it that her hand is so warm and the rest of her is so cold?"

"لمذا يدها دافئة

وباقي جسمها بارد؟"

"Because you have been holding it since this morning," he said.

أجاب "لانك كنت تمسكين بها منذ الصباح"

"You have not let it go."

"لم تتركيها"

If there is a sinew in our family, it runs through the women.

لو كان هناك قوى في عائلتنا,

فانها تسري في النساء

بعد أن علمنا من نكون وكيف شكلتنا الحياة

Given who we were and how life had shaped us,

يمكننا ان نرى الاّن

we can now see that the men that might have come into our lives

ان الرجال الذين جاءوا الى حياتنا

would have thwarted us.

أصابونا بالاحباط.

Defeat would have come too easily.

الهزيمة كانت سهلة جداً

Now I would like to have my own children, and I wonder about the boat.

الاّن أتمنى أن أنجب الأطفال

وأفكر في القارب

من كان ليتمنى ان يمر بتلك التجربة؟

Who could ever wish it on their own?

أنا اخشى الامتياز

Yet I am afraid of privilege,

الذي توفره السهولة

of ease,

of entitlement.

في الاستحقاق

Can I give them a bow in their lives, dipping bravely into each wave,

هل يمكنني اعطاءهم ما يشبه مقدمة السفينة في حياتهم,

تختبرك بشجاعه في كل موجة,

the unperturbed and steady beat of the engine,

إحساس الضربات المنتظمة للمحرك

the vast horizon that guarantees nothing?

I don't know.

But if I could give it

and still see them safely through,
