Bonds that took hold in the life of that small girl

This is not a finished story.

It is a jigsaw puzzle still being put together.

Let me tell you about some of the pieces.

Imagine the first piece: a man burning his life's work.

He is a poet, a playwright,

had been balanced on the single hope of his country's unity and freedom.

Imagine him as the communists enter Saigon --

അദ്ദേഹത്തെ സൈഗോനില്‍ എത്തിയ ഒരു കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റുകാരന്‍ ആയി സങ്കല്‍പ്പിക്കുക

confronting the fact that his life had been a complete waste.

Words, for so long his friends, now mocked him.

He died broken by history.

He is my grandfather.

I never knew him in real life.

But our lives are much more than our memories.

My grandmother never let me forget his life.

എന്‍റെ അമ്മുമ്മ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജീവിതം മറക്കാന്‍ ഒരിക്കലും എന്നെ അനുവദിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല

My duty was not to allow it to have been in vain,

already with two small girls.

നേരത്തെ തന്നെ രണ്ടു കുട്ടികളും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു

For her, life had distilled itself into one task:

അവള്‍ക്ക്, ഒരേ ഒരു കര്‍ത്തവ്യ ത്തിനു വേണ്ടി ജീവിതത്തെ ക്രമീകരിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു

the escape of her family and a new life in Australia.

It was inconceivable to her that she would not succeed.

So after a four-year saga that defies fiction,

Like most adults on the boat,

my mother carried a small bottle of poison.

If we were captured, first my sister and I,

ഞങ്ങള്‍ പിടിക്കപ്പെട്ടാല്‍, ആദ്യം എന്‍റെ സഹോദരി, പിന്നെ ഞാന്‍

then she and my grandmother would drink.

My first memories are from the boat --

the steady beat of the engine,

the vast and empty horizon.

I don't remember the pirates who came many times,

but were bluffed by the bravado of the men on our boat,

പക്ഷെ തോല്‍വി അടഞ്ഞു

ബോട്ടിലെ ആണുങ്ങളുടെ ധൈര്യത്താല്‍

or the engine dying and failing to start for six hours.

നിശ്ചലമായി ക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ബോട്ടിന്റെ എഞ്ചിന്‍

ആറു മണിക്കൂറുകളോളം സ്റ്റാര്‍ട്ട്‌ ചെയ്യാന്‍ പ്രയാസപ്പെടുന്നത്

But I do remember the lights on the oil rig off the Malaysian coast

എന്നാല്‍ ഞാന്‍ ഓര്‍മ്മിക്കുന്നു,

മലേഷ്യന്‍ തീരത്തെ എണ്ണ റിഗില്‍ നിന്നും വരുന്ന പ്രകാശം

and the young man who collapsed and died,

the journey's end too much for him,

After three months in a refugee camp, we landed in Melbourne.

And the next piece of the jigsaw is about four women

across three generations shaping a new life together.

We settled in Footscray,

a working-class suburb whose demographic is layers of immigrants.

അവരുടെ ജന സംഖ്യാ പരമായ കുടിയേറ്റക്കാരുടെ തുടര്‍ച്ച ആയിരുന്നു

Unlike the settled middle-class suburbs, whose existence I was oblivious of,

സ്ഥിര താമസമായ മധ്യ വര്‍ഗ കുടിയേറ്റക്കാരെ പോലെ ആയിരുന്നില്ല

അവരുടെ നിലനില്‍പ്പ്‌ എനിക്ക് അറിയാമായിരുന്നു

footscray ല്‍ ഒരു തരത്തിലുള്ള വിനോദവും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല

there was no sense of entitlement in Footscray.

കടകളില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള മണം മറ്റു ലോകങ്ങളുടെതായിരുന്നു

The smells from shop doors were from the rest of the world.

വാര്ത്താ ശകലം വിട്ടു വിട്ടുള്ള ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ആയിരുന്നു

And the snippets of halting English

ആളുകളുമായി പങ്കിട്ടിരുന്നത്

were exchanged between people who had one thing in common:

എല്ലാവര്ക്കും ഒരു കാര്യം പൊതു വായിരുന്നു

They were starting again.

അവര്‍ വീണ്ടും തുടങ്ങി

My mother worked on farms,

എന്റെ അമ്മ വിളനിലത്തില്‍ പണി എടുത്തു

then on a car assembly line,

അതിനു ശേഷം കാര്‍ നിര്‍മാണ ശാലയില്‍

working six days, double shifts.

ആറു ദിവസങ്ങളില്‍ രണ്ടു ഷിഫ്റ്റ്‌ ആയിട്ടു

ഇതിനിടയില്‍ എങ്ങനെയോ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പഠിക്കാനുള്ള സമയവും കണ്ടെത്തി

Somehow, she found time to study English

and gain IT qualifications.

എന്നിട്ട് ഐ.ടി. യോഗ്യത നേടി

ഞങ്ങള്‍ വളരെ പാവപ്പെട്ടവര്‍ ആയിരുന്നു

We were poor.

കുറച്ചു ഡോളര്‍

All the dollars were allocated

ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് നും കണക്കിനും അധിക പരിശീലനത്തിനു വേണ്ടി

and extra tuition in English and mathematics was budgeted for

കരുതിയിരുന്നു

regardless of what missed out,

ഒരിക്കലും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതിനെ ഓര്‍ത്തു പരിതപിച്ചില്ല

which was usually new clothes;

അത് മിക്കവാറും പുതിയ വസ്ത്രങ്ങളായിരുന്നു

they were always secondhand.

Two pairs of stockings for school,

each to hide the holes in the other.

A school uniform down to the ankles, because it had to last for six years.

എന്തെന്നാല്‍ അത് ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് അഞ്ചു വര്ഷം വരെ ഉപയോഗിക്കേണ്ടി ഇരുന്നു

And there were rare but searing chants of "slit-eye"

എന്റെ ഉള്ളില്‍ എന്തോ ഉറഞ്ഞു കിടന്നു

Something stiffened inside me.

There was a gathering of resolve and a quiet voice saying,

അവിടെ പ്രശ്ന പരിഹാരത്തിനുള്ള ഒരുക്കം നടക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു

പതിഞ്ഞ ശബ്തത്ത്തില്‍ പറയുമായിരുന്നു " ഞാന്‍ എല്ലാത്തിനെയും മാറി കടക്കുമെന്ന്"

"I will bypass you."

ഞാനും, എന്‍റെ അമ്മയും, സഹോദരിയും

My mother, my sister and I slept in the same bed.

ഒരേ കിടക്കയില്‍ ആയിരുന്നു ഉറങ്ങിയിരുന്നത്

My mother was exhausted each night,

എല്ലാ രാത്രിയിലും എന്‍റെ അമ്മ വളരെ തളര്ന്നാണ് ഉറങ്ങിയിരുന്നത്

പരസ്പരം ഞങ്ങള്‍ അന്നത്തെ സംഭവങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ച് പറയുമായിരുന്നു

but we told one another about our day

അമ്മുമ്മയുടെ വീടിനു ചുറ്റുമുള്ള

and listened to the movements of my grandmother around the house.

My mother suffered from nightmares, all about the boat.

And my job was to stay awake until her nightmares came

ഞാന്‍ ഉറക്കം ഒഴിച്ച് കാത്തിരിക്കുമായിരുന്നു എന്‍റെ അമ്മയുടെ സ്വപ്നം വരുന്നത് വരെ

so I could wake her.

അതുകൊണ്ട് ഞാന്‍ ആ സമയത്ത് അമ്മയെ വിളിച്ചുണര്‍ത്തുമായിരുന്നു

എന്‍റെ അമ്മ ഒരു കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍ പീടിക തുടങ്ങി

She opened a computer store,

then studied to be a beautician and opened another business.

And the women came with their stories

about men who could not make the transition,

angry and inflexible,

and troubled children caught between two worlds.

Grants and sponsors were sought.

Centers were established.

വ്യാപാരങ്ങള്‍ എല്ലാം വളരെ വിപുലമായി

ഞാന്‍ ഒരു സമാന്തര ലോകത്തില്‍ ആയിരുന്നു ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നത്

I lived in parallel worlds.

അതില്‍ ഒന്നില്‍ ഞാന്‍ ഒരു വിശിഷ്ടമായ ഏഷ്യന്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ഥി ആയിരുന്നു

In one, I was the classic Asian student,

relentless in the demands that I made on myself.

In the other, I was enmeshed in lives that were precarious,

tragically scarred by violence, drug abuse and isolation.

And for that work, when I was a final-year law student,

I was chosen as the Young Australian of the Year.

And I was catapulted from one piece of the jigsaw to another,

ഞാന്‍ വീശി എറിയപടുകയായിരുന്നു

and their edges didn't fit.

invited to speak in venues she had never heard of

I didn't know the protocols.

I didn't know how to use the cutlery.

വൈനിനെ പറ്റി സംസാരിക്കാന്‍ അറിയില്ല .

I didn't know how to talk about wine.

I didn't know how to talk about anything.

ഒന്നിനെ പറ്റിയും എങ്ങനെ സംസാരിക്കണം എന്ന് എനിക്ക് അറിയില്ലായിരുന്നു

I wanted to retreat to the routines and comfort

എനിക്ക് എന്റെ പഴയ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക്

of life in an unsung suburb --

ഒരു അറിയപ്പെടാത്ത ഉപനകരത്തില്‍

a grandmother, a mother and two daughters

ending each day as they had for almost 20 years,

She reminded me that I was now the same age she had been

ഞാന്‍ എത്ര ധൈര്യ പൂര്‍വ്വം സംസാരിച്ചുവോ

And the more candidly I spoke, the more I was asked to speak.

അതെ രീതിയില്‍ എന്നോട് സംസാരിക്കാന്‍ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു

ജീവിതത്തിലെ എല്ലാ തുറകളില്‍ ഉള്ള ആളുകളെ ഞാന്‍ കണ്ടു മുട്ടി

I met people from all walks of life,

so many of them doing the thing they loved,

അവരില്‍ പലരും തന്നെ അവര്‍ ഇഷ്ട്ടപെടുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ആയിരുന്നു ചെയ്തിരുന്നത്

സാധ്യത കളുടെ ലോകത്തായിരുന്നു ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നത്

living on the frontiers of possibility.

And even though I finished my degree,

ഞാന്‍ എന്‍റെ നിയമ പഠനം പൂര്‍ത്തി ആക്കി എങ്കിലും

I realized I could not settle into a career in law.

എനിക്ക് ഒരിക്കലും നിയമ മേഖല യില്‍ ഒരു തൊഴില്‍ കിട്ടാന്‍ സാധ്യമല്ല എന്ന സത്യം ഞാന്‍ മനസിലാക്കി

There had to be another piece of the jigsaw.

വിഷമകരമായ കഥയുടെ അടുത്ത ഭാഗത്തിലേക്ക്

അതെ സമയത്ത് മറ്റൊരു കാര്യം കൂടി മനസിലാക്കി

And I realized, at the same time,

that it is OK to be an outsider,

ഒരു വെളിനാട്ടുകാരി എന്ന നിലയില്‍ എല്ലാം ശരി ആയിരുന്നു.

പക്ഷെ ഒരു തുടക്കക്കാരി എന്ന നിലയില്‍

a recent arrival,

new on the scene --

ഈ മേഖലയിലെ പുതു മുഖം ആയിരുന്നു

and not just OK,

അത്ര സുഖകരവും അല്ലായിരുന്നു

but something to be thankful for,

പക്ഷെ ചിലതിനു നന്ദി പറയുകയാണ്

perhaps a gift from the boat.

ഒരു പക്ഷെ ബോട്ടില്‍ നിന്ന് കിട്ടിയ സമ്മാനം ആയിരിക്കാം അത്

Because being an insider can so easily mean collapsing the horizons,

എന്തെന്നാല്‍ ഒരു ഉള്നാട്ടുകാരി എന്ന നിലയില്‍

വളരെ എളുപ്പത്തില്‍ വിജയത്തിന്‍റെ ചക്ര വാളങ്ങള്‍ കീഴടക്കാന്‍ കഴിയുമായിരുന്നു

എളുപ്പം മനസിലാക്കാന്‍ കഴിയുമായിരുന്നു

can so easily mean accepting the presumptions of your province.

തന്‍റെ മേഖല യിലെ സാദ്ധ്യതകള്‍ മനസിലാക്കി കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ

ഒരു സുരക്ഷിത മേഖല ക്ക് പുറത്തു വരാന്‍ എനിക്ക് സാധിച്ചു

I have stepped outside my comfort zone enough now

to know that, yes, the world does fall apart,

അതെ , ലോകം പല രീതിയിലേക്ക് മാറി ക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു എന്ന സത്യം മനസിലാക്കി കൊണ്ട്

പക്ഷെ നിങ്ങള്‍ ഭയപെടുന്ന രീതിയിലല്ല

but not in the way that you fear.

Possibilities that would not have been allowed

സാദ്ധ്യതകള്‍ ഒരിക്കലും നിങ്ങളെ അനുവധിക്കുമായിരുന്നില്ല

നിങ്ങള്‍ പ്രോത്സാഹിക്കപ്പെടെണ്ടി ഇരുന്നു

were outrageously encouraged.

അങ്ങനെ ഒരു ഊര്‍ജം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു അവിടെ

There was an energy there,

an implacable optimism,

തകര്‍ക്ക പ്പെടാന്‍ കഴിയാത്ത ഒരു വിശ്വാസം

a strange mixture of humility and daring.

ഒരു അസാധാരണമായ ശാ ലീനത യുടെയും ധൈര്യത്തിന്റെയും മിശ്രണം

So I followed my hunches.

യുഗങ്ങളോളം ജീവിതങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ഒരു മാറ്റവും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല

Life hadn't changed for centuries.

അമ്മുമ്മ ജനിച്ചതിനു വളരെ പെട്ടെന്ന് തന്നെ അവരുടെ അച്ഛന്‍ മരിച്ചു

Her father died soon after she was born.

Her mother raised her alone.

At 17, she became the second wife of a mandarin whose mother beat her.

അയാളുടെ അമ്മ ഒരുപാടു ഉപദ്രവിക്കുമായിരുന്നു

With no support from her husband,

ഭര്‍ത്താവിന്‍റെ യാതൊരു സഹകരണവും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല

അയാളെ കോടതി കയറ്റി അമ്മുമ്മ ഒരു വിപ്ലവം തന്നെ സൃഷ്ട്ടിച്ചു

she caused a sensation by taking him to court

and prosecuting her own case,

and a far greater sensation when she won.

I knew she had come to say goodbye.

മറ്റു ഭാഗങ്ങള്‍ വളരെ തണുത്തും

"Because you have been holding it since this morning," he said.

എന്തെന്നാല്‍ രാവിലെ മുതല്‍ സ്വന്തം കൈ പിടിയില്‍ ഒതുക്കി വെച്ചിരിക്കുക ആയിരുന്നു

"You have not let it go."

നിങ്ങള്‍ അവരെ പോകാന്‍ അനുവദിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല

If there is a sinew in our family, it runs through the women.

നമ്മളുടെ കുടുംബത്തിലെ ഒരു ബലം ഉണ്ടെങ്കില്‍

and still see them safely through,
