I'm going to tell you about an affliction I suffer from.

ကျွန်မခံစားရတဲ့ ဝေဒနာတစ်ခု အကြောင်း ပြောပြမလို့ပါ။

And I have a funny feeling that quite a few of you

အဲဒါကြောင့် ရှင်တို့ထဲက တစ်ချို့လည်း ခံစားကြရတယ်လို့

suffer from it as well.

When I'm walking around an art gallery,

အခန်းတိုင်း ပန်းချီကားတွေနဲ့ ပြည့်နေတဲ့

rooms and rooms full of paintings,

ပန်းချီပြခန်းတစ်ခု အနား လျှောက်နေတုန်း

after about 15 or 20 minutes,

၁၅ မိနစ် မိနစ် ၂၀ လောက်ကြာတော့ ကိုယ် တွေးနေတာက

I realize I'm not thinking about the paintings.

ပန်းချီကားအကြောင်း မဟုတ်တာ သိလိုက်တယ်။

I'm not connecting to them.

ကျွန်မ ဒါတွေကို မဆက်သွယ်ပါဘူး။

Instead, I'm thinking about that cup of coffee

ဒီအစား ကျွန်မကို အသည်းအသန် နိုးဖို့ လိုတဲ့

I desperately need to wake me up.

ကော်ဖီခွက်အကြောင်းကို တွေးနေတာလေ။

I'm suffering from gallery fatigue.

ပန်းချီပြခန်း ဒဏ်ခံစားနေရပါတယ်။

How many of you out there suffer from --

ရှင်တို့ ဘယ်နှစ်ယောက် အဲဒီလို ခံစားရ...

yes. Ha ha, ha ha!

ဟုတ် ဟား ဟား ဟား။

Now, sometimes you might last longer

ကဲ တစ်ခါတစ်လေ မိနစ် ၂၀ ထက် ပိုကြာနိုင်တယ်

than 20 minutes, or even shorter,

ဒါမှမဟုတ် ပို တိုနိုင်တာပေါ့

but I think we all suffer from it. And do you have

ဒါပေမဲ့ အားလုံး ခံစားရတယ်ထင်တယ်။

the accompanying guilt?

စိတ်ထဲ လိပ်ပြာမလုံတာမျိုးရော ဖြစ်လား။

For me, I look at the paintings on the wall

ကျွန်မအတွက်တော့ နံရံပေါ်က ပန်းချီကားတွေကို ကြည့်ပြီး ဒါတွေဟာ

and I think, somebody has decided to put them there,

နံရံမှာ ထားရလောက်အောင် ကောင်းတယ်လို့ တစ်ယောက်ယောင်က ထင်မိလို့

thinks they're good enough to be on that wall,

ထားဖို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်လိုက်တာလို့ ထင်တယ်။

but I don't always see it.

ဒါပေမဲ့ အမြဲတမ်းတော့ မထင်ဘူး

In fact, most of the time I don't see it.

တကယ်က အချိန်အများစုမှာ မထင်မိဘူး။

And I leave feeling actually unhappy.

တကယ့်ကို စိတ်ညစ်မိတဲ့ ခံစားချက်ကျန်ရစ်တယ်။

I feel guilty and unhappy with myself,

ပန်းချီကားဟာ တစ်ခုခု မှားနေတယ်လို့ တွေးမိတာထက် ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို

rather than thinking there's something wrong with the painting,

မလုံမလဲနဲ့ စိတ်ညစ်သလို ခံစားရတယ်။

I think there's something wrong with me.

ကိုယ် တစ်ခုခုမှားတာပဲ ထင်တယ်။

And that's not a good experience, to leave a gallery like that.

အဲဒီလိုခံစားချက်မျိုးနဲ့ ပြခန်းထဲမှ ထွက်လာတာ မကောင်းဘူးလေ။

The thing is, I think we should give ourselves a break.

ကိစ္စက ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို အနားပေးသင့် တယ်လို့ ထင်တယ်။

If you think about going into a restaurant,

စားသောက်ဆိုင်ထဲကို ဝင်မယ်လို့စဉ်းစားရင်

when you look at the menu, are you expected to order

ဟင်းလျာစာရင်းကို ကြည့်တော့ စာရင်းမှာပါတာတိုင်းကို

every single thing on the menu?

မှာဖို့ မျှော်လင့်ထားသလား။

No! You select.

မဟုတ်ဘူး။ ရွေးမှာတာပါ။

If you go into a department store to buy a shirt,

ရှပ်အင်္ကျီတစ်ထည်ဝယ်ဖို့ ကုန်တိုက်ကိုဝင်ရင်

are you going to try on every single shirt

ရှပ် အင်္ကျီတိုင်းကို စမ်းဝတ်မှာလား။

and want every single shirt?

အထည်တိုင်းကို လိုချင်လား။

Of course not, you can be selective. It's expected.

မဟုတ်ဘူး၊ ကိုယ်က ရွေးနိုင်ရပါမယ်။ ဒါ မျှော်လင့်ထားတာလေ။

How come, then, it's not so expected

ဒါဆို ပန်းချီပြခန်းသွာတော့ ရွေးချယ်စရာ

to be selective when we go to an art gallery?

မရှိနိုင်ဘူးလို့ ဘယ်လိုလုပ် ယူဆကြတာတုန်း။

Why are we supposed to have a connection with every single painting?

ဘာ​ကြောင့် ပန်းချီကားတိုင်းနဲ့ ဆက်စပ်မှု ရှိသင့်ရတာလဲ။

Well I'm trying to take a different approach.

မတူတဲ့ နည်းလမ်းနဲ့ ချဉ်းကပ်ဖို့ ကျွန်မ ကြိုးစားနေပါတယ်။

And there's two things I do:

လုပ်စရာ နှစ်ခုရှိပါတယ်၊

When I go into a gallery, first of all, I go quite fast,

ပြခန်းတစ်ခုကို သွားရင် ပထမဆုံးက မြန်မြန်လေး သွားလိုက်တယ်။

and I look at everything, and I pinpoint the ones

အကုန်လုံးကိုကြည့်ပြီး တစ်နည်းနည်းဖြင့် ကိုယ့်ကို

that make me slow down for some reason or other.

I don't even know why they make me slow down, but something

pulls me like a magnet

and then I ignore all the others, and I just go to that painting.

So it's the first thing I do is, I do my own curation.

I choose a painting. It might just be one painting in 50.

And then the second thing I do is I stand in front of that painting,

and I tell myself a story about it.

ဒီအကြောင်း ပုံပြင် တစ်ပုဒ် ကိုယ့်ဘာသာ ပြောတာပါ။

Why a story? Well, I think that we are wired,

ဘာလို့ ပုံပြင် တစ်ပုဒ်လဲ။ ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ထူးဆန်းတယ်လို့ ထင်တယ်။

our DNA tells us to tell stories.

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ DNA က ကျွန်မတို့ကို ပုံတွေ ပြောပြတယ်။

We tell stories all the time about everything,

အရာတိုင်းရဲ့ပုံတွေ တစ်ချိန်လုံး ကျွန်မတို့ပြောကာ

and I think we do it because the world is kind of a crazy, chaotic place,

and sometimes stories, we're trying to make sense of the world a little bit,

trying to bring some order to it.

Why not apply that to our looking at paintings?

So I now have this sort of restaurant menu

ကဲ စားသောက်ဆိုင်က ဟင်းလျာစာရင်းလို ပြခန်းတွေကို

visiting of art galleries.

လည်ပတ်ရေး စာရင်းရှိတယ်။

There are three paintings I'm going to show you now

ရှင်တို့ကို ပြမယ့် ကျွန်မရဲ့ လမ်းကြောင်းတွေမှာ ကျွန်မကို

that are paintings that made me stop in my tracks

ရပ်တန့်သွားစေခဲ့တဲ့ ပန်းချီကား သုံးကားရှိပါတယ်။

and want to tell stories about them.

သူတို့ရဲ့ ဇာတ်လမ်းတွေကို ပြောပြချင်ပါတယ်။

The first one needs little introduction --

ပထမဆုံး တစ်ချပ်က နည်းနည်း မိတ်ဆက်ဖို့လိုပါတယ်။

"Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer,

၁၇ ရာစု ဒတ်ခ်ျ ပန်းချီဆရာ Johannes Vermeer ရဲ့

17th-century Dutch painter.

"ပုလဲနားကပ်နဲ့ ကောင်မလေး" ပါ။

This is the most glorious painting.

ဒါဟာ အခမ်းနားဆုံး ပန်းချီကားပါ။

I first saw it when I was 19,

ကျွန်မ ၁၉ နှစ်မှာ ပထမဆုံးမြင်ခဲ့ပြီး

and I immediately went out and got a poster of it,

ချက်ချင်းပဲ နံရံကပ်ပိုစတာ သွားဝယ်လိုက်တယ်။

and in fact I still have that poster. 30 years later it's hanging in my house.

ဒီ ပိုစတာ အခုထိရှိတုန်းပါ၊ နှစ် ၃၀ ကြာသွားတာတောင် အိမ်မှာ ချိတ်ဆွဲထားတုန်းပါ။

It's accompanied me everywhere I've gone,

ကျွန်မ ဘယ်သွားသွား အဖေါ်ပြုပေးပါတယ်။

I never tire of looking at her.

သူမကြည့်ရတာ ကျွန်မ ဘယ်တော့မှ စိတ်မကုန်နိုင်ဘူး။

What made me stop in my tracks about her to begin with

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ရှာဖွေမှုထဲတွင် သူမ အနားမှာ ရပ်တန့်မှုကို အစပြုလိုက်တာက

was just the gorgeous colors he uses

ပန်းချီဆရာ သုံးတဲ့ အရောင်တွေနဲ့

and the light falling on her face.

But I think what's kept me still coming back

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကျွန်မကို တစ်နှစ်ပြီးတစ်နှစ် ဆက်၊ ဆက် လာနေစေတာက

year after year is another thing, and that is

အခြားအကြောင်းတစ်ခုလို့ ထင်ပါတယ်။ ဒါကတော့

the look on her face, the conflicted look on her face.

သူမရဲ့ မျက်နှာပေါ်က အကြည့်၊ မျက်နှာပေါ်က ဝိရောဓိဖြစ်နေတဲ့ အကြည့်ပါ။

I can't tell if she's happy or sad,

သူမပျော်လား၊ ဝမ်းနည်းလား ကျွန်မ မပြောနိုင်ပဲ

and I change my mind all the time.

ကျွန်မစိတ်က တစ်ချိန်လုံး ပြောင်းလဲနေပါတယ်။

So that keeps me coming back.

ဒီတော့ ဒါက ကျွန်မကို ဆက်၊ ဆက်လာနေစေတာပေါ့။

One day, 16 years after I had this poster on my wall,

တစ်နေ့ ဒီပုံကို နံရံမှာထားပြီး ၁၆ နှစ်အကြာမှာ

I lay in bed and looked at her,

အိပ်ရာထက်လှဲပြီး သူမကိုကြည့်လိုက်တယ်၊

and I suddenly thought, I wonder what

ရုတ်တရက် တွေးမိတာက ပန်းချီဆရာက သူမကို

the painter did to her to make her look like that.

ဒီလိုအကြည့်ဖြစ်အောင် လုပ်ခဲ့သလားပေါ့။

And it was the first time I'd ever thought that

သူမရဲ့ မျက်နှာပေးဟာ ပန်းချီဆရာနဲ့ ပတ်သက်ပြီး

the expression on her face is actually reflecting

သူမရဲ့ခံစားချက်ကိုတကယ်ပဲ ရောင်ပြန်ဟပ်နေတယ်ဆိုတာကို

how she feels about him.

ပထမဆုံးတွေးမိဖူးတဲ့ အတွေးပါပဲ။

Always before I'd thought of it as a portrait of a girl.

မိန်းကလေးတစ်ယောက်ရဲ့ ပုံတူအဖြစ် အရင်က တွေးမိခဲ့တဲ့အတိုင်းပါ။

Now I began to think of it as a portrait of a relationship.

အခုတော့ ဒါကို သံယောဇဉ်တစ်ခုရဲ့ ပုံတူတစ်ခုလို့ စတွေးမိပါတယ်။

And I thought, well, what is that relationship?

တွေးမိတာက အင်း၊ ဒီသံယောဇဉ်က ဘာလဲပေါ့။

So I went to find out. I did some research and discovered,

ဒီတော့ ရှာဖွေချင်လာတယ်။ လေ့လာမှုလုပ်ပြီး တွေ့ရှိရတာက

we have no idea who she is.

In fact, we don't know who any of the models

တကယ်တော့ Vermeer ရဲ့ ပန်းချီကားတွေထဲက

in any of Vermeer's paintings are,

ကိုယ်ဟန်မယ်တွေဟာ ဘယ်သူဆိုတာ ကျွန်မတို့ မသိတာပါ။

and we know very little about Vermeer himself.

Vermeer ရဲ့အကြောင်းတောင် မသိသလောက်ပါ။

Which made me go, "Yippee!"

I can do whatever I want, I can come up with whatever story I want to.

So here's how I came up with the story.

First of all, I thought,

I've got to get her into the house.

သူမကို အိမ်ပေါ်ရောက်အောင်လုပ်ရမယ်။

How does Vermeer know her?

Vermeer သူမကို ဘယ်လိုလုပ်ပြီး သိခဲ့တာလဲ။

Well, there've been suggestions that

အင်း အကြံပြုချက်တွေ ရှိထားတာက

she is his 12-year-old daughter.

သူမဟာ ၁၂ နှစ်သမီးလေး၊

The daughter at the time was 12 when he painted the painting.

သူပန်းချီစဆွဲတော့ သမီးလေးဟာ ၁၂ နှစ် သမီးပါ။

And I thought, no, it's a very intimate look,

ဒီတော့ တွေးမိတာက "မဟုတ်ဘူး၊ အကြည့်က အရမ်း ရင်းနှီးနေတယ်၊

but it's not a look a daughter gives her father.

သမီးက အဖေ့ကိုကြည့်တဲ့အကြည့် မဟုတ်ဘူး။

For one thing, in Dutch painting of the time,

တစ်ခုရှိတာက ဒတ်ခ်ျ ပန်းချီဆွဲချိန်မှာ

if a woman's mouth was open, it was indicating sexual availability.

မိန်းမတစ်ယောက်ဟာ ပါးစပ်ဟနေရင်၊ ဒါဟာ လိင်ပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာ ရနိုင်တာကို ပြတယ်။

It would have been inappropriate for Vermeer

သူ့သမီးကို ဒီလို ပန်းချီဆွဲဖို့တော့

to paint his daughter like that.

So it's not his daughter, but it's somebody

ဒီတော့ သမီးမဟုတ်ရင်၊ သူနဲ့ ရင်းနှီးသူ

close to him, physically close to him.

Well, who else would be in the house?

A servant, a lovely servant.

အစေခံတစ်ယောက်၊ လှပတဲ့ အစေခံတစ်ယောက်ပေါ့။

So, she's in the house.

How do we get her into the studio?

သူမကို ပန်းချီခန်းထဲ ဘယ်လိုခေါ်မလဲ။

We don't know very much about Vermeer,

Vermeer အကြောင်း အများကြီး မသိပေမဲ့

but the little bits that we do know, one thing we know

is that he married a Catholic woman, they lived with her mother

in a house where he had his own room

where he -- his studio. He also had 11 children.

It would have been a chaotic, noisy household.

ဗြောင်းဆန် ဆူညံနေတဲ့ အိမ်ထောင်စု ဖြစ်လိမ့်မယ်။

And if you've seen Vermeer's paintings before,

အရင်က Vermeer ရဲ့ ပန်းချီကားတွေသာ တွေ့မိခဲ့ရင်

you know that they're incredibly calm and quiet.

ဒါတွေဟာ မယုံနိုင်အောင်ကို အေးချမ်း တိတ်ဆိတ်တယ်ဆိုတာ သိကြပါတယ်။

How does a painter paint such calm, quiet paintings with 11 kids around?

ပန်းချီဆရာဟာ ကလေး ၁၁ ယောက် နဲ့ ဒီလိုအေးချမ်းတဲ့ကားတွေ ဘယ်လိုလုပ်ဆွဲလဲ။

Well, he compartmentalizes his life.

အင်း၊ သူက သူ့ဘဝကို အကန့်ခွဲလိုက်တယ်။

He gets to his studio, and he says, "Nobody comes in here.

သူ့ပန်းချီခန်းထဲဝင်ရင် သူက " ဒီကို ဘယ်သူမှမလာနဲ့။" လို့ပြောတယ်။

Not the wife, not the kids. Okay, the maid can come in and clean."

မိန်းမ​ရော၊ ကလေးတွေပါ။ ကောင်းပြီ၊ အိမ်ဖော်ကတော့ လာပြီး ရှင်းတယ်ပေါ့။

She's in the studio. He's got her in the studio, they're together.

သူမက ပန်းချီခန်းမှာ။ သူကလာခိုင်းပြီး သူတို့ အတူတူပေါ့။

And he decides to paint her.

ပြီး သူမကို ပုံဆွဲဖို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်တယ်ပေါ့။

He has her wear very plain clothes.

သူမကို ရိုးရိုးအဝတ်တွေ ဝတ်ခိုင်းတယ်။

Now, all of the women, or most of the women in Vermeer's other paintings

ကဲ Vermeer ရဲ့ အခြားပုံတွေထဲမှာ အကုန်လုံး သို့မဟုတ် မိန်းမအများစုဟာ

wore velvet, silk, fur, very sumptuous materials.

ပိုးသား၊ သားမွှေး အပြတ်သားနားတဲ့ ပစ္စည်းတွေ ဝတ်ကြတယ်။

This is very plain; the only thing that isn't plain

ဒီပုံကတော့ အရမ်းရိုးပါတယ်။ မရိုးတာဆိုလို့

is her pearl earring.

Now, if she's a servant, there is no way she could afford

ကဲ သူမဟာ အစေခံဆိုရင် ပုလဲနားကပ်တစ်ရံဖိုး

a pair of pearl earrings.

မတတ်နိုင်လောက်ပါဘူး။

So those are not her pearl earrings. Whose are they?

ဒါဆို ဒါတွေဟာ သူမရဲ့ ပုလဲနားကပ်တွေ မဟုတ်ဘူးပေါ့။ ဘယ်သူ့ဟာတွေလဲ။

We happen to know, there's a list of Catharina, the wife's clothes.

သိရတာက Catharina ၊ ဇနီးသည်ရဲ့ အဝတ်အစား စာရင်းရှိတယ်။

Amongst them a yellow coat with white fur,

ဒီအထဲက သားမွှေးဖြူနဲ့ ကုတ်အဝါတစ်ထည်၊

a yellow and black bodice,

အဝါနဲ့ အနက် ဘော်လီတစ်ထည်၊

and you see these clothes on lots of other paintings,

အခြားပုံတွေမှာ ဒီအဝတ်အစားတွေ တွေ့ရပါတယ်၊

different women in the paintings, Vermeer's paintings.

ပုံတွေထဲက မိန်းမ အမျိုးမျိုးမှာ၊ Vermeer ရဲ့ပုံတွေမှာလေ။

So clearly, her clothes were lent to various different women.

ဒီတော့ ရှင်းနေတာက သူမရဲ့ အဝတ်တွေဟာ မိန်းမအမျိုးမျိုးဆီက ငှားထားတာပေါ့။

It's not such a leap of faith to take

ဒါနဲ့ပဲ ပုလဲနားကပ်ဟာ သူ့မိန်းမပိုင်ပါတယ်လို့

that that pearl earring actually belongs to his wife.

ကောက်ယုံလိုက်လို့တော့ မရပါဘူး။

So we've got all the elements for our story.

ဒီတော့ ဇာတ်လမ်းအတွက် အစိတ်အပိုင်းတွေ အားလုံး ရပြီပေါ့။

She's in the studio with him for a long time.

သူမဟာ သူနဲ့ ပန်းချီခန်းထဲမှာ အကြာကြီး ရှိခဲ့တယ်။

These paintings took a long time to make.

ဒီပုံတွေဆွဲဖို့က အချိန်တော်တော် ယူရတယ်လေ။

They would have spent the time alone, all that time.

အဲဒီတစ်ချိန်လုံး သူတို့နှစ်ယောက်တည်း ကုန်ဆုံးခဲ့တာ။

She's wearing his wife's pearl earring.

သူ့ဇနီးရဲ့ ပုလဲနားကပ်ကို သူမဝတ်ထားတယ်။

She's gorgeous. She obviously loves him. She's conflicted.

လှနေတာပေါ့။ သူ့ကိုချစ်နေတာ အရှင်းကြီး ဝိရောဓိ ဖြစ်တာပေါ့။

And does the wife know? Maybe not.

ဇနီးရော သိလား။ သိချင်မှသိမှာပေါ့။

And if she doesn't, well --

သူမ မသိဘူးဆိုရင် ...အင်း...

that's the story.

The next painting I'm going to talk about

is called "Boy Building a House of Cards" by Chardin.

"Boy Building a House of Cards" ဆိုတဲ့ Chadin ရဲ့ကားပါ။

He's an 18th-century French painter best known for his still lifes,

သူက သက်ငြိမ် ပန်ချီကားတွေနဲ့ ကျော်ကြားတဲ့ ၁၈ ရာစု ပြင်သစ် ပန်းချီဆရာပါ။

but he did occasionally paint people.

တစ်ခါတစ်လေတော့ လူပုံတွေဆွဲတတ်ပါတယ်။

And in fact, he painted four versions of this painting,

တကယ်တော့ ဒီပုံကို မူကွဲ လေးမျိုးနဲ့ ဆွဲခဲ့တာပါ။

different boys building houses of cards, all concentrated.

I like this version the best, because some of the boys

are older and some are younger, and to me, this one,

like Goldilocks's porridge, is just right.

He's not quite a child, and he's not quite a man.

He's absolutely balanced between innocence and experience,

and that made me stop in my tracks in front of this painting.

And I looked at his face. It's like a Vermeer painting a bit.

The light comes in from the left, his face is bathed

And he didn't look at me. He was still looking at his cards,

and that's one of the seductive elements of this painting is,

he's so focused on what he's doing that he doesn't look at us.

And that is, to me, the sign of a masterpiece,

So I was thinking of a story where,

if I'm in this position, who could be there looking at him?

Not the painter, I don't want to think about the painter.

I'm thinking of an older version of himself.

He's a man, a servant, an older servant looking at this younger servant,

saying, "Look at me. I want to warn you about

And he never does.

And that lack of resolution, the lack of resolution in "Girl with a Pearl Earring" --

ပြတ်သားခြင်းကင်းမဲ့တဲ့ "Girl with a Pearl Earring " ပန်းချီကား..

we don't know if she's happy or sad.

I've written an entire novel about her,

And we may make a story, and it satisfies us momentarily,

The last painting I'm going to talk about

နောက်ဆုံးပြောပြမယ့် ပန်းချီကားကတော့

is called "Anonymous" by anonymous. (Laughter)

"အမည်မသိ" ဆိုတဲ့ အမည်မသိ တစ်ယောက်ရဲ့ ကားပါ။ (ရယ်သံများ)

This is a Tudor portrait bought by the National Portrait Gallery.

ဒါက National Portrait Gallery ကဝယ်ထားတဲ့ Tudor ပုံတူတစ်ကားပါ။

They thought it was a man named Sir Thomas Overbury,

Sir Thomas Overbury ဆိုတဲ့ လူတစ်ယောက် လို့ ထင်ခဲ့ကြပြီး

and then they discovered that it wasn't him,

သူမဟုတ်မှန်း နောက်မှာ ဖော်ထုတ်ခဲ့ကြတယ်။

and they have no idea who it is.

Now, in the National Portrait Gallery,

if you don't know the biography of the painting,

So unfortunately, this orphan spends most of his time in storage,

along with quite a number of other orphans,

This painting made me stop in my tracks for three reasons:

One is the disconnection between his mouth

that's smiling and his eyes that are wistful.

မျက်လုံးတွေကြားက အဆက်အစပ်မရှိခြင်းပါ။

He's not happy, and why isn't he happy?

သူမပျော်ပါဘူး၊ ဘာလို့ သူမပျော်တာလဲ။

The second thing that really attracted me

ဒုတိယ အချက် ကျွန်မကိုဆွဲဆောင်တဲ့ အရာက

were his bright red cheeks.

သူ့ရဲ့ နီမြန်းတဲ့ ပါးပြင်တွေပါ။

He is blushing. He's blushing for his portrait being made!

သူက ရှက်နေတယ်။ သူ့ပုံတူအတွက် ဟန်ပြလုပ်ရတာကို ရှက်နေတယ်။

This must be a guy who blushes all the time.

What is he thinking about that's making him blush?

The third thing that made me stop in my tracks

is his absolutely gorgeous doublet.

Silk, gray, those beautiful buttons.

And you know what it makes me think of,

is it's sort of snug and puffy; it's like a duvet spread over a bed.

နွေးထွေးပြီး ခပ်ပွပွနဲ့ အိပ်ရာပေါ် ဂွမ်းကပ် ဖြန့်ထားသလိုနဲ့လေ။

I kept thinking of beds and red cheeks,

အိပ်ရာတွေနဲ့ နီမြန်းတဲ့ပါးပြင်တွေကို ဆက်တွေးနေမိပြီး

and of course I kept thinking of sex when I looked at him,

တကယ်တော့ သူ့ကိုကြည့်လိုက်တော့ လိင်ကိစ္စကို ဆက်တွေးမိပြီး

and I thought, is that what he's thinking about?

သူတွေးနေတာ ဒါပဲလို့ ထင်မိတယ်။

And I thought, if I'm going to make a story,

တွေးမိတာက သူ့အကြောင်း ဝတ္ထုဖန်တီးမယ်ဆိုရင်

what's the last thing I'm going to put in there?

န​ောက်ဆုံးထည့်ရမှာက ဘာများလဲပေါ့။

Well, what would a Tudor gentleman be preoccupied with?

အင်း Tudor လူကြီးလူကောင်းက ဘာများနဲ့များ ဖိစီးနေမလဲပေါ့။

And I thought, well, Henry VIII, okay.

ထင်တာက အင်း တတိယ ဟန်နရီ၊ ဟုတ်ပြီ။

He'd be preoccupied with his inheritance, with his heir.

သူ့ရဲ့ အမွေ၊ အမွေခံနဲ့ စိတ်ဖိစီးနေမှာပဲပေါ့။

Who is going to inherit his name and his fortune?

သူ့ရဲ့ အမည်နဲ့ စည်းစိမ်ကို ဘယ်သူဆက်ခံမလဲ။

You put all those together, and you've got your story

ဒါတွေကို စုလိုက်ရင် ကိုယ့်ကို ပြန်ပြန်လာစေတဲ့ ဟာကွက်ကို

to fill in that gap that makes you keep coming back.

ဖြည့်ပေးတဲ့ ဇာတ်လမ်းကို ရပြီပေါ့။

Now, here's the story.

I am still wearing the white brocade doublet Caroline gave me.

It has a plain high collar, detachable sleeves

set close together so that the fit is snug.

The doublet makes me think of a coverlet on the vast bed.

Perhaps that was the intention.

ဒါက ရည်ရွယ်ရင်း ဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်။

I first wore it at an elaborate dinner her parents held in our honor.

I knew even before I stood up to speak

Only George could call me Rosy.

George drained another glass of claret and turned to me.
